Default Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat

I was watching a clip on YouTube from James Corbin’s late show and he was doing a segment where he, Lin-Manuel Miranda (co-creator of Hamilton) and Emily Blunt sang 22 musical songs in 12 minutes. It was cool. I recommend watching the video especially if you love musicals.

Anyway. When they got to Guys and Dolls, they sang Sit Down You’re Rocking the Boat. I was shocked because I didn’t know it was a cover. I always thought it was a new song for the movie Leap Of Faith. I guess if I had watched Guys and Dolls, I would had known it was an old song.

    Did anybody know that?

    Brothers for life. RIP Glenn

I'm not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life. Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some." -Don Henley

Haha, yes I knew that, I've been watching old musicals since I was a kid! I didn't know Henley did a cover of this, how strange!

Yeah - I was aware that this song was originally featured in a musical, but shun had to refresh my memory about which one.

And groupie, the song is included on the deluxe version of The Very Best of Don Henley box set.

"People don't run out of dreams: People just run out of time ..."

I knew that it was a cover, but I didn't know what it was from. The lyrics are very "old school" - the guy on the boat is a sharp-dressed scoundrel type, threatened with condemnation for gambling with dice and drinking. That's a not a song that would have been written after 1970, lol, unless as satire. Of course, the fact that Don Henley is singing it is pretty ironic in itself!

Don Henley's version is actually the first time I heard the song - he introduced me to it. He does a good job with it, IMHO.

Here are the lyrics, if you don't know it:

    I dreamed last night
I was on the boat to Heaven
    By some chance
I had brought my dice along
    And there I stood
And I hollered, "Someone fade me"
But the passengers, they knew right from wrong

And the people all said, "Sit down
Sit down, you're rockin the boat"
The people all said, "Sit down
Sit down, you're rockin the boat
'Cause the devil will drag you under
By the sharp lapels of your checkered coat
    Sit down, sit down
Sit down, you're rockin the boat"

    As I sailed
    With those passengers to Heaven
    By some chance
I found a bottle in my fist
    And there I stood
    Nicely passing out the whiskey
But the passengers were bound to resist

And the people all said, "Sit down
Sit down you're rockin the boat"
The people all said, "Sit down
Sit down, you're rockin the boat
'Cause the devil will drag you under
By the sharp lapels of your checkered coat
    Sit down, sit down
Sit down, you're rockin the boat"

    As we sailed
On that tiny boat to Heaven
    Great big wave
    Came and washed me overboard
    And as I sank
Oh I hollered, "Someone save me"
That's the moment I woke up
    Thank the Lord

I listen to the original version of Sit Down You're Rocking the Boat on Youtube, completely different from Don's version.

As I listen to all the covers Don has done, they sound so different from the original and sometimes better than the original. For example, Everybody Knows. Don had completely re-arrange the music of the song. I listened to Leonard Cohen's version and I was like, "what?!!!" It was completely different.

I don't know who does the re-arranging of the songs Don covers, but they do a great job.

Same here, Soda. For years before I became an Eagles fan, I didn't even know that was even Don. When I found out it was Don singing the song during the opening credits, I was like where have I been. I guess I didn't know Don back then. I just knew I loved watching Leap Of Faith growing up and it was a catchy song at the beginning.

I didn’t know it was a cover either, but then I’ve never seen Leap of Faith or Guys and Dolls.

I listened to Henley's version for the first time over the weekend...it is so different from the musical version! Slowed down, with a reggae beat...since I'm used to the original, this was very strange to me. The only thing that's the same is the lyrics.

For me, since I heard his first and have listened to it so much since.... The original sounds odd! Isn't that funny? Same for "Everybody Knows."
