So sorry for your loss AG95.

My grandpa is doing well. He got so lucky! He's still a little tired but his respiratory symptoms and fever have gone. He was put on dexamethasone for supportive care at home. As it turns out, it wasn't his girlfriend who brought it home. He had to go for a blood draw for his PSA to check on his cancer about 5 days before he had symptoms. How we know it wasn't her is because now as of four days ago, she has COVID symptoms and a positive COVID test where as before she was negative. So one of the only times he leaves the house (for the doctors) he gets it and then she gets it from him. He said it had to be from the lab. It makes me nervous because I've been to the hospital and doctors offices so much recently and go again next week to St. Louis. Regardless, it looks like he gave it to her rather than her being an asymptomatic carrier. She is doing ok and seems to be on the road to recovery as well.

It's good to hear of someone recovering well despite being vulnerable. It's a reminder that even in the most vulnerable groups, most people do recover.

    Yes...

If only that were true for everyone though. I know you aren't, but over here there are some people who are far too comfortable with "only 500k" dead and pushing false info about survival rates. Only 500k is far too much. There are millions over here, but 500k people is 500k people with families, lives, and a fair amount of them who were young, much to the contrary of opinion of some saying just let the chips fall where the may with older people or frail people. Which I take great offense to. But young otherwise healthy people have died too, which shatters their beliefs about it being only weak.

My endocrinologist the other day says the COVID virus and who it kills is still a mystery. He said we can have a guy who smokes 2-3 packs of cigarettes a day and who's diet is nothing but bacon and eggs and burgers with type 2 diabetes pull through with COVID with flu like symptoms and a week off and we can have a young adult athlete in his 20s drop dead, lungs overtaken with pneumonia, and not make it. He says that there is no rhyme or reason even in 2021. No age group is safe despite the preliminary data which isn't everything. Here in my local area there was an older teen who did of the virus overtaking his lungs. No underlying health issues. I do think the elderly are the most vulnerable, but not all will die of it. But not every young person is safe unlike what the prior US POTUS said. It makes no sense, over a year later. The only thing is to vaccinate, vaccinate, vaccinate! And follow guidelines. No one is safe. I definitely don't think we can go by anything as hard and fast rules of statistics after what my specialist told me!

I'm with you there. We should all be taking what precautions we can and accept a vaccine as soon as we can.

Talking of which, my US brother was vaccinated yesterday. As he's the oldest and has health issues, I'm relieved. I'll probably get my first dose in early April. My German brother is predicting he'll be offered in May and my Canadian sister can try to book hers from 1st June.

Well I have some good news to share. I got my first Moderna shot today!

Our great Governor Pritzker (IL) opened up immunizations to the next phase including those with conditions and disabilities. I and my dad both qualified. My mom has already had both doses of Moderna. Dad and I got our first dose of Moderna today and already have appointments to go in exactly a month from today to get our second and final dose.

I was so excited I almost cried. I hadn't posted anything about it because I didn't know if HyVee Pharmacy would honor it and I also didn't want to get myself too excited. The new phase started today but sure enough they did and I have mine. I feel fine other than a very slightly tender sore arm. I don't feel like it was a particularly painful shot.

I'm so ready to not be so fearful for my and my families lives. I'm ready to not feel like all hope is lost. If not enough people will do the right thing and wear the masks and follow the science, maybe it won't matter if I'm vaccinated. I was so fed up because had we all done the right thing from the beginning, maybe we could safely open up by now. But no, we've regressed. Vaccinate everyone and do it that way. I can't count on all of my fellow Americans that are in my personal space out in public to do the right thing.

That's great news and within a few weeks you should have quite a high level of immunity even before the second dose.

I get my first shot today. I'm nervous, but I'm one step from protecting myself and do other things. Of course I will still wear my mask since their are other variants out there.

My mother gets hers next week.

    Brothers for life. RIP Glenn

I'm not sure I believe in fate, but I know that crossing paths with Glenn Lewis Frey in 1970 changed my life forever, and it eventually had an impact on the lives of millions of other people all over the planet. It will be very strange going forward in a world without him in it. But, I will be grateful, every day, that he was in my life. Rest in peace, my brother. You did what you set out to do, and then some." -Don Henley

Got both my shots, 2nd one was Wednesday, and no side affects. Still going to wear a mask when in close contact with others like at the store or such.
If you know a Vet that is having a hard time getting a shot tell them to contact the VA Hospital near them. If they have a doctor there, even if they only see them once in a while, call them and have them set you up. My neighbor is 95 and a WWII and Korean War Vet. He couldn't get in with Kaiser till March 15th, I told him to try the VA. He gets his second shot Monday. He walks his old dog every day and if someone doesn't see him for a day they start asking if anyone has seen him. If no one has phone call or knocking on his door starts. I think it drives him crazy sometimes. No when he has to go off he tells me. LOL Hey he's our Vet.
Glad to hear people are recovering from covid. Now it's the kids. They not get covid but can get anther disease from it. I can't remember the name of it but it's bad.
To those who haven't gotten their shots, don't be afraid to get one. It was a piece of cake. Some have gotten flu like side affects for a day or two, some get tired the neck day, some get a minor headache and some have minor arm pain especially at the shot spot but most don't get anything.
    Stay healthy everyone..

So glad to hear that your grandfather is recovering, Austin.

I am still patiently waiting to be contacted so I can make an appointment to get the vaccine. I'm trying not to be discouraged, but I got an email a couple of days ago saying that there is still no timeline for when this will happen. It looks like things are picking up though and, hopefully, this will continue. Glad to see that more of us here have been lucky enough to have at least gotten the first shot.
