My AV software is Webroot, which has a very good reputation. I've never had any problems using it. And the message is the same on Firefox and IE so I doubt that it's a browser issue.

No, but sometimes the wording is different and so between them you can piece together the issue. I guess that won't work in this case!

Worked fine for me through my iPad. I'll try it on my PC to see if I get a warning. When I listened, the first thought that came to mind was that It doesn't sound like Glenn. I agree that "Burned" does though.

I couldn't keep from cracking up on the first song with Glenn's 'British' accent! Too funny! I agree it sounded like him on Burned though.

Both songs sounded Beatley to me!

I blame Bob Seger for Glenn's disastrous attempt to sing in a British accent. He wrote and produced the song. Even if it were Glenn's idea to try and sound British, Seger should have nixed the notion. I guess they were trying to imitate the Beatles, but "Eleanor Rigby" it ain't.

I forgive Seger, though, because of all the other cool stuff he did for Glenn, like letting him sing backup. ;) Plus, he's pretty awesome in his own right!

I agree that "Burned" is a lot better. He sounds so energetic and young... which is exactly what he was! Inexplicably, the debacle that is "Such a Lovely Child" was the a-side, while "Burned" was on the back. I guess Seger assumed that the buying public was so enamored of the Beatles that they'd eagerly lap up any song with a guy sounding psuedo-British.

Thankfully, in just a few years, Glenn would demonstrate that his songwriting and vocal capabilities far surpassed this kind of material.

Ha - I just listened to these. SALC is a cool song! They both are. Glenn sounds so good. I love hearing him sing like this (not the accent part, but the rest of it.) What a voice - such a different style from early Eagles (well, it WAS a different style/genre). Wish there was more of this. I love hearing what the guys could do pre-Eagles.

That is what struck me. When I first heard SALC some time ago, the accent threw me & I never listened to it again, but yesterday... it is the same clear voice that I always loved, etc etc. Obviously it was a mistake but I now feel I wouldn't want to be without it.

Yeah - SALC isn't Glenn's best career move for sure, but, it was considered 'cool' to do the British accent in songs at the time it was recorded.

Dreamer, I'm not sure I agree as far as a career move. I can't see where it hindered his career at all! Maybe didn't help, but it surely didn't hold him back. For all we know, it did help.

Dreamer, you always use the smilies when you're being sarcastic or funny, so I did wonder if you'd hit your head on something! Really, his career after singing that song kinda catapulted into territory very few others ever attained. Glad to know you still have your wits about you.

It seems like it might have been a trend at the time since the British invasion. Good thing he didn't speak with a British accent like some of the performers of today (Madonna and Johnny Depp) and yes it certainly didn't hurt his career. I wonder if he'd cringe if someone played that for him today or if he'd laugh.

From Rolling Stone's 25 years ago round-up:

6. Glenn Frey gets muscular
Glenn Frey of the Eagles signed an endorsement deal with Jack LaLanne fitness centers, showing off his muscular body, which he described as the result of 1,500 sit-ups a day, five days per week. What motivated him? "They offered me a shitload of money," he said, and made a spirited defense of commercial endorsements: "I do not cling to this antiquated hippie mentality that says it's us against them. I personally do not consider Pepsi-Cola or Old Style Beer or the Health and Tennis Corporation to be the enemy. This is the age of adult rock stars."

And UTW - that link isn't working for me. However, I love Glenn's bluntness as well. Although, it may be a turn-off to some people, he has pretty much always been like this and it definitely works for me. I have kind of a tough skin, so I prefer straight-shooters. Back in the day, I actually had a friend who had a tee shirt with the red circle/slash symbol over the word 'Bullshit'. I always really liked that shirt, and would have loved to have had one, but my mom would've never let me wear it.

I got that one too VA! Its interesting for me because on my photography course we are studying about composing shots, having the right artistic elements in the shot (in the right proportion etc). You spend longer composing the shot as opposed to taking it. This article shows just the opposite!! You snap and run!!!

Some restaurants have a "special" table set in or right by the kitchen in order to show off the way a meal is prepared, usually for VIP or a foodies it can be a real treat depending on the chef. I guess this might come under VIP status?!

Very confused here. I saw a tweet from Jill Martin that said, "
Hey @nyknicks fans I have the Eagles Glenn Frey at the half. Questions? #celebrityrow" It had a picture of someone else on the Jumbotron. Anyway, this implies, to me, that she's interviewing Glenn at halftime, but while she is a Knicks broadcaster, ESPN is carrying the game tonight, I don't see it being on locally in the NY area. She works for NBC as well, not ABC, so I don't see her sub'ing in on ESPN.

I'll be watching the Bucs/Cubs game at 7pm, and will probably have people here with me to watch it, so I can't watch ESPN to see what happens. Maybe someone else can and report back? If I am here by myself, I'll flip back and forth between games... I love Glenn to death, but watching an NBA game over my Buccos (over any baseball game, really)....can't do it.

I hesitated over saying it 'out loud'! I used to watch the NBA, but all the rule changes have made it into a complete mockery, in my opinion. I appreciate an offense that can score on a great defense, but they aren't allowed to play defense (zone) in the NBA. Plus the unwritten rules where if you make over a certain amount of money, you can travel with the ball without ever getting called. Puh-leeze. Get rid of that stupid shot clock, or up the number to something realistic, bring back the defense, and dribble the ball every two steps. Then maybe it can be called a sport again.

OK, I'm off my soapbox.

Got this in a Google alert: http://www.rockcellarmagazine.com/2014/04/04/top-11-loser-songs/#sthash.ClvdpV4s.dpbs It's the Top 11 Loser Songs by ROCKCELLAR Magazine. No 10 is Beautiful Loser by Bob Seger. He talks about Glenn's influence on him regarding the song.

Here is the quote mentioning Glenn:

10. Beautiful Loser by Bob Seger

The title character of Bob Seger’s Beautiful Loser represents “people who set their goals so high that they’re impossible, so they have comfort in failing,” the singer-songwriter told NPR. But the song is not autobiographical. “A lot of people think I wrote Beautiful Loser about myself,” Seger said in Creem magazine. “I got the idea for that song from a book of Leonard Cohen poetry by the same name. The song was about underachievers in general. I very rarely write about myself that much. I draw on my own experiences like anyone else, but I’m not what you’d call auteuristic. I’m not like my songs at all. I’m a lot more up person than what I write.”

Seger’s career was in the doldrums until the release of Beautiful Loser. The hard rocking Seger told Rolling Stone that Glenn Frey of the Eagles encouraged him to vary his style. “It took over a year to put it together. I wrote five different Beautiful Losers before I settled on one for the record. There was a ballad, a blues, I couldn’t find the right tone. So I played it for Glenn Frey, an old friend, to get some advice. He was the first person to ever hear it. And he loved it, so I stuck with the song until it all got pieced together.”

I dreamed once about being his PA in Dublin in 93. Though in my dream I sourced guitar strings rather than toilet paper. Seriously though, how do you GET to be his PA.

In the US it seems they pick friends to be their PA. Somewhere like Dublin, maybe a friend recommends somebody? I suppose there could be a service or something....

I knew a lady who became a PA for several bands in Italy because she was fluent in both Italian and English, and fairly attractive. The first band liked her and recommended her to other bands, and there you go.

Only problem is the job is temporary, unreliable, and uninsured! But I suppose it's fun to be part of that world, even if you are only supplying toilet paper, lol.

Scraping the barrel a little, but I like to fill in the gaps. This is from an interview with Lou Ann Barton:

RO: Right about that time you got your first break as a solo artist. LAB: I'd recorded some songs and sent demo copies around to a bunch of labels and industry people. Jerry Wexler got really excited about it. He knew everybody, so he sent it around to people like Bette Midler, Linda Ronstadt. Linda liked it and she's the one who suggested Glenn Frey [of the Eagles] to work on it. So he and Wexler co-produced Old Enough.

RO: Frey doesn't seem like a fit for you.
LAB: He was all right, a likable guy. We got along well.

RO: The record didn't do too well and you left Asylum. Looking back, what are your feelings about that first album?
LAB: It was my first album and I didn't know a lot. I did bring Jimmie in to play on it, but in the end it was a little clean-sounding to me.

Thanks, UTW. I especially liked this part:

Having been close to the Eagles and seeing that happen and being close to their famous bands and all, I just have to say that those guys work ten times as hard as I'm even able to work. They have a different temperament. Those guys can take it. They can take it again and again and again and never stop. I just feel like I'm right where I should be, because man, I couldn't do that.

This is for those who think being in a band is a lark. It doesn't matter if you do it for money or because you can't not play music, if you want the fans to like you, if you want to last for over forty years and still be great, this is what you do. Work. It's really no different than other professions in that regard. Those who do the work, every day, rise to the top and stay there.

UndertheWire

I like that it shows that the success of the Eagles benefited others within their circle of friends. Not everyone has to be a superstar. Jack's obviously very content with what he has. Maybe that's one of the reasons why he was able to work so well with Glenn over the years.

I thought this was an interesting observation:

When I talk to my son and I say, "it's kind of hard to get paid anymore," he says, "Well, you know, Dad, the period where writers got paid was kind of just in your lifetime. It didn't happen that much before and it's not going to happen after. You just have to look at that as an anomaly."
I'm still surprised that so many of the big names of the seventies didn't make a fortune for themselves.

Yes, this is something I've noted as well. The trope of the "starving musician" has been around for ages for good reason. It wasn't until the era of rock'n'roll that making music was considered a way to get rich. After the money started rolling in for successful musicians, people started reading about their private jets, their multiple opulent homes, their fancy cars, their extravagant lifestyles... and suddenly kids playing in garages weren't saying "I want to be a musician," they were saying "I want to be a rich rock star." Many people became musicians in order to make money; to some, money wasn't a nice benefit of making good music, it was the goal. Making music was simply the means to that end.

Maybe once music is no longer perceived as a pathway to wealth, it'll be more about the art again. You won't become a musician unless you are truly dedicated to your craft.

Unfortunately, because so many of that generation got into music for the payday and the successful ones came to expect riches to rain down upon them with every release, you'll now hear many of them say things like, "Why create new music if it's not going to make me a lot of money?" If they won't make millions of dollars, they're not interested. They also make dire predictions that in the future, no one will ever want to make music because there's not enough money in it. It's inconceivable to them that anyone would want to make music without the possibility of becoming wealthy as a result of their efforts.

They're wrong, though. From what I've seen, most of the new breed of musicians create music because they love it, because it's in their blood. It's a calling, not a entrepreneurial effort. They want to make enough to earn a living and they want to become famous in order to be heard by a wide audience, but they don't expect to become multimillionaires. The pendulum has swung back.

ETA: I realize I'm speaking in generalities; plenty of people from the older generation got into music for the love of it, and there are younger people still expecting to get rich. However, based merely upon my own observations, I assert that the shift in overall mentality does exist.

Really enjoyed the website! Jeff Alborell turned me on to this tribute to Detroit's garage bands. I played keyboards in the Mushrooms and the Heavy Metal Kids with Glenn Frey.
Jeff played with my brother Gary Burrows who founded the Four of Us of which glenn played rhythm guitar briefly. My brother gary and I left michigan and moved to Los Angeles hoping to make it in the music business. On a interesting note my brother gary and I formed a group in Los Angeles and we needed a bass player. We knew Glenn Frey was living in North Hollywood and we went to his apartment where he lived with J.D. Souther to try to recuit Glenn into our group. He wasn't interested. J.D. Souther and him formed the group Longbranch Pennywhistle that had a regional hit in Western United States before he and Don Henley played with Linda Ronstadt as a sidemen. They left to form the Eagles.
The listing of venues and who played there filled in some
memory gaps like the Mushrooms playing at SilverBell ski lodge and the Southfield Music Festival in July.

Jack Tempchin has just reposted a link to an interview he did last year. Of course, I read it again and one thing caught me because it is so different from the common perception of Mr Frey.

I also think [choosing that song]is a measure of Glenn as a guy; others would want to write their own songs. I notice this over and over – the guys with true greatness are always very, very generous with everybody else. Others don’t do that because they can’t get past themselves….

It's a good read. Used car salesman! When did that happen? For me, you do a good job at capturing what's appealing about the man.

As for humour, one of my favourites is this from a 1975 interview with Cameron Crowe:

The Eagles return from a record crowd at the Chicago Stadium to find their Holiday Inn’s front desk covered with phone messages, telegrams and flowers. With One of These Nights in its fifth week at the top of Billboard‘s LP chart, the group has just won in Best Song (“Best of My Love”) and Best Group (over Led Zeppelin, Elton John and the Rolling Stones) categories of the nationally televised Rock Awards. On the phone upstairs with Glenn Frey is Joe Walsh, who accepted the awards for them, and, in the process, kissed presenter Raquel Welch.
“You really kissed her,” Glenn is demanding, eyes wide. “Did you ask her about the silicone?” He spots the writer going for his notebook. “Naw, naw, naw. Don’t use that. That’s a cruel remark. Besides, we can’t be roguish underdogs anymore.” Frey grins and flips a cigarette into his mouth. “We have to be gracious winners.”

Very odd, Dreamer, as it didn't even give me a link to subscribe!

Here's the relevant part.

On Detroit's rock 'n' roll mythology: "It's flattering that we have this cult appreciation of Detroit. I certainly understand what Eminem is doing, and it sounds familiar to me. I loved '8 Mile.' And I totally get what Kid Rock is doing. He's more into the rap thing — I would sound ridiculous doing that. It would be like me trying to do flamenco. But I can appreciate how good these guys are at what they do. There is a thin line that runs through it, and I think it's R&B — all of it. Original R&B, which some of the experts say, in conjunction with country became rock 'n' roll. But it's an R&B thing that has always been part of Detroit music, right down from Motown, and people like James Brown who played at Cobo Hall, this has always been an R&B town. I certainly heard it in the MC5, I heard it in Glenn Frey, he loves R&B, he's the most R&B Eagle."

I don't remember seeing it before. The interviewer mentions that he saw, in HotE, Glenn's account of how he learned to write songs from Jackson when he lived in the apartment above him. That is really all that is mentioned about Glenn. However, Jackson's description of some of his song writing experiences are quite interesting. This probably show go in the Jackson Browne thread as there actually isn't any info about Glenn other than the interviewers comment.

This article contains only the merest mention of Glenn, it's about James Dolan (JD). I honestly don't know what to think. I mean, the fan that wrote the letter to Dolan to begin with, I can't imagine what he was thinking. Who writes that kind of a letter to someone you don't even know? I realize I'm fortunate in being a Steeler fan and Penguins fan, where there'd never be a reason to send such a letter, but I'm also a Pirate fan and never considered sending such a thing even after 20 years in a row with a losing record.

However, Dolan's response is quite beyond the pale here. He needed to step up and be the bigger man and very definitely failed at that. I saw a post from ESPN that Dolan won't be fined for his response.

This article carries on the idiocy. You'd seriously never consider these are grown people. The entire letter is stupid, but the part about Glenn possibly talking about Dolan behind his back to his other friends is completely stupid. Fortunately for these bozos, Glenn is a grown man and will take the high road.

I'm not surprised Dolan gets hate mail. While you're a patient person, VA, I've seen many a sports fan foaming at the mouth when they feel their team's being mismanaged. The coaches and players get hate mail, too.

I'm guessing Dolan thought his response was witty and full of zingers that would really make that guy sorry he ever wrote that email! Instead, we get an email with the capitalization, lack of punctuation, and grammar issues one finds within texts made by teens that is essentially a version of "I know you are, but what am I?" He probably typed this reply on his cell phone as soon as he read the email in the heat of the moment, and regretted it as soon as he hit "send." At least, I hope so.

However, the truth is Dolan could be a saint and he'd still be reviled by many sports fans until he was managing a winning team. If he can't deal with that ugly reality, he should get out of the sports business.

The comment about the 'best vocal band in the world' was indeed made in 1988. Back then LRB was LRB. None of the original members are in it any more. I always found their vocals too strident. When I saw Glenn with them he gave them an edge which they normally didn't have.

I have always been dubious about the claims of being Australian which are made for AC/DC whose main songwriters & current singer are British, and the Bee Gees who were born on the Isle of Man. Their career started in Brisbane but they had to go back to the UK for it to really take off. As for Crowded House they are from New Zealand. Americans wouldn't claim Rush, would they? Australians claim people from NZ like Russell Crowe all the time.

I would guess that most of you elsewhere have heard of INXS & perhaps Midnight Oil & that would be it. I digress.

I assumed it was completely false until I looked the place up and looked at Google street view from several sides. It really does have a drive-thru and it really does have highly rated daiquiries! I thought my area of KY was pushing the edges with a drive thru liquor store. I've seen plenty of drive-thru beer distributors, but a hard liquor drive-thru was new for me. I have to wonder if this place really sells daiquiries through their drive thru? I know what I'd be doing fairly often if I lived there if so!

So you can drive through and get an open alcoholic drink? No laws about open alcohol in a car? You can't do that here in Missouri or Illinois. At least the driver can't be drinking liquor/beer.

Glennsallnighter
04-14-2015, 02:23 PM
I've never heard of a drive thru where you can purchase alcohol, but I guess they DO exist. Here once the driver is not drinking its ok to store alcohol in the main part of the car and for passengers to drink it once they don't intend driving.

In Texas, there are drive-thru hard liquor stores, but even so you can't have an open container of any kind of alcohol in the passenger area of the car. I looked it up, and the same is true in Louisiana despite their more liberal liquor laws: http://la-legal.com/louisiana-dwi/

I agree with this statement:

He understands well crafted simplicity.
In the HotE doc, Timothy talks about the arrangement of ICTYW as having a "lot of air" and the same is true of much of Glenn's solo work. The vocals don't get drowned out by the other instruments and if another instrument has a solo, it's given room to breath.

Excellent blog. I love it when people recognize Glenn's most underrated strength. There's more to making a good song than good guitar licks and a great voice with good lyrics. The lyrics, the voice, the instruments all need to be arranged into something that paints a picture or sets a mood for the listener. Something they can relate to.
