I didn't realize Ringo still did the All-Starrs thing. Cool!

I'm not sure that he does it every single year, but he has been doing it on & off for a long time. I saw them in 92 with Joe & Timothy & I think he started it a year or 2 before that. His son Zac was already playing with them too.

Here's the link to an article in the Sioux Falls paper regarding Jazz Fest. Not finding any pix yet but I'm sure there will be a few coming soon. I ended up NOT making the drive over (about 6 hours) for lastnight's show since we're flying out to Boston for a visit with my brother on Tuesday and will see him in Cohasset.

Top Ten Joe Walsh songs from Ultimate Classic Rock.

" His unique, inimitable guitar playing sets him apart from most of his contemporaries — Walsh is the rarest of guitar heroes, one who doesn't overplay, instead using his innate sense of tone and phrasing to construct simple melodies that perfectly communicate the heart of each song. "

That's a pretty good list but I'd change the top three around a bit.

Instead of:

1. Rocky Mountain Way
2. Funk #49
3. Life's Been Good

I'd go:

1. Life's Been Good
2. Rocky Mountain Way
3. Funk #49

To me LBG is the be all end all of Joe songs. It's such a good song.

Great article. Funny about Joe and Peter talking about it now.

I can't locate the article right now, but it was an old interview with Joe where he said "I taught Frampton to use the talk box but he never gave me any credit", or something like that.

I like Peter Frampton, but Joe is the talk box master. Sure, Frampton has more songs that use it, but RMW is THE talk box anthem.

It's such a cool instrument. I don't have one - I hear there is actually a lot of maintenance involved in the ones that sound good (replacing drivers and such), and the ones that don't need replacing as much don't sound as good. I have enough expenses just putting new tubes in all of my amps every year!!!!

I especially found this interesting....

The Eagles' most recent album and how he thinks it didn’t turn out as well as it should have because it was largely put together digitally. “The Eagles are at their best when we all go in a studio and set up and they mic us and they push record and we all play at once.”
And he goes on to say that the digitalization of music, although it has made things much easier for musicians, it has really destroyed a lot of great music.
"The most important thing is the human performance. You can’t fix everything and make it perfect just because you can. It’s a really bad habit. You’ve got to really testify and play from your heart. No reading a legal pad with what you’re going to do next.”

Topkat
03-15-2013, 12:12 PM
He had mentioned this before in other interviews. It's not really anything new. Joe has been saying that he likes the old way of doing things. I have to agree with him. I am not a musician, but when it is all digitized & perfect, it sometimes loses it's soul.

I do recall him & maybe someone else, it may have been Timothy say that they did not have much time together when doing the album, that things were sent back & forth digitally...Seems kind of impersonal to me.I guess it can be convenient, & people won't have to travel, but I don't like to think that albums are made this way.:-(:-(

Freypower
03-16-2013, 09:28 PM
Oh well.... I guess I should not say so but here goes. Although it bothers me how LROOE was recorded, and saddens me too, in my opinion it is a far superior album to Analog Man, digital & impersonal or not.

WalshFan88
03-17-2013, 06:23 AM
I feel the opposite. But different strokes for different folks. I like two songs from LROOE (How Long and Guilty Of The Crime). While I don't like every track on Analog Man, there are a lot more songs on there I really like. I admit that I wanted AM to be a bit more raw, less polished, and more like his earlier albums - but I still am glad he did the album and I think it has some great songs (Wrecking Ball, ODAAT, etc). LROOE for me I just don't connect with how "different" it is. It's hard to explain. Just like the title track. It just doesn't seem very Eagles to me. I do love How Long and Steuart did a great job with the lead guitar on it (love the SG Jr he uses on it), and GOTC is great too. I do like YANA too, but not as well as the other two.

Ive always been a dreamer
03-17-2013, 01:57 PM
Hey - what can I say ... I love 'em both even though they are very different. As far as Analog Man, I think it's one of Joe's best solo efforts ever. Even though, as Austin says, it is more 'polished' than some of his previous work, I don't think he overdid it at all - for me, it's just right.

As far as LROOE - my biggest criticism is similar to what Joe is saying. I don't think it was as much as a collaborative effort for the band, which, of course, is primarily because of our digital world. However, I still think it is a highly quality piece of work and, overall, stands up well against the band's earlier work. Yes - it is different, but so are many of their earlier albums. For me - different is good! It's part of what I love so much about this band.

sodascouts
03-17-2013, 02:28 PM
I think Analog Man is Joe's best work since the seventies! Yes, I enjoy LROOE more, but that doesn't mean Analog Man is an inferior piece of work. I think it's great.

I also agree LROOE would have been even better if it were more organically done, but it seems that at this point it's too difficult for them to get together for an extended period outside of touring. I'll take MP3 exchanges and "Eagle-ized" solo songs over nothing.

Topkat
03-17-2013, 03:56 PM
I love Analog Man, but I also agree that LROOE is an amazing album. I don't think LROOE has very much Joe in it. There is very little of that rockin guitar, & it looks like Joe wrote only one song on the whole double album, where there are several outside collaborators on that album. They are two completely different albums, so I can't even think of comparing them.

Joe's album is a bit more polished than his earlier work, but I think the music industry is just so much different than it was & he felt the need to go in that direction. Also there is the influence of Jeff Lynne on the album, but you can still hear the Joe we all know & love in that album.

I really wonder if the Eagles will actually do another album as a band. When you think about how LROOE was done, & how long it took to get that out there, I'm just not even sure that they will get together enough to do another one. They all seem to be in different places, both physically & musically that I just don't see it happening....Look at the solo albums each has done recently.. all in different directions. I would love for them to do new music, but the more I think about it, the less I see it happening.:stunned:
Frankly, I would be pretty shocked if it happens,!

Yeah, that's what I was talking about. I knew that they had sent the files back and forth, etc.... but had not heard any of them actually criticize the way it was done.

I'm with Joe, seems like it would be so much more personal and easy to throw ideas off each other if you're all in a studio together around a microphone, harmonizing. Besides, it makes for a much "prettier" picture in our minds for us fans. :)

Only two songs? That is incredibly harsh.

In that case, I don't feel so bad about saying that there are only about 5 songs on Analog Man that I like. The rest of them are rehashes or just not very interesting songs. I try not to say much because I am obviously in a minority.

I'm not meaning that it's not a good album, it's just not my kind of music. Same with After Hours for me. It's a good album and the singing/playing is great, it's just simply not my type of music or the type of music I like to listen to. Doesn't mean it's not great or that it somehow is bad because I don't listen to it, it just means it's not my thing personally. I'm glad they put them out, they are great, but it's not the kind of music I'm into. I'd love for him to do a Motown covers album of songs like Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, etc. Now that stuff I can get into and I do love it. And as he said in the documentary, he grew up listening to that stuff on the radio. I'd love to hear him do songs like "My Girl", "Signed, Sealed, Delivered", etc. I think it'd fit his voice in the right key.

FWIW, there are 6 songs on AM that I really like. There are 3 I never listen to. But that's enough for me to say it's a good album and it's a great thing he put it out. A new record from Joe that is all over the place or a mixed bag or not my type of music (which it is in this case mostly) is better than no new record from Joe, as far as I'm concerned. And much the same for the Eagles and any of their solo records.

Austin, I'm surprised you don't include Somebody in your likes from LROOE as it's more of a rocker than some of the others. :headscratch:

I like it, it's a bit too dark for me but it's a good song.

Still, I prefer How Long. Somehow my brain finds that song as a rocker. I think it's because it's so uptempo and the guitar licks compared to the 70s version.

I don't wish to hijack Joe's thread but I always thought that if Glenn did a covers album he would in fact do Motown & Atlantic R&B. He has sung My Girl live. That's what people may have expected him to do. I am actually glad he didn't. After Hours wasn't 'my kind of music' either but once I heard it, I fell in love with it.

Saying that Analog Man is 'better than nothing' to me isn't a good enough reason to endorse it. Of course it's better than nothing. That goes without saying. But what about its actual merits?

FP, Analog Man was named Best Album of 2012 by Vintage Guitar.com

http://www.vintageguitar.com/hall-of-fame/

Also it was listed as one of the Top 10 albums of 2012 by Ultimate Classic Rock, (I will look for the related article & post it later) so the album did have some merit in the eyes of some rock critics. Once again, the thread has turned into being about Glenn! Seems that you come into every thread to praise Glenn. Can't anything be about anyone else in the band??? Any time anyone says anything nice about another band member, Glenn must be brought into the conversation. This thread is about Joe.We get it that you love Glenn, but some of us can discuss other band members without it being all about Glenn!

OK?

Now; Some critics were very kind to AM. That does not mean I have to agree with them. I was not talking about critics' opinions of it but my own. I also said previously that I knew I was in a minority.

All I'm saying (my thoughts on the album aside), is that I'm glad Joe put out something instead of never making another record. I'm not saying that has to make anyone like it, but I'd much rather he put something out than nothing at all.

I am glad to see he did it and I do like a good number of songs on it.

I realize this post wasn’t directed at me, but, as a moderator, I’m going to weigh in on this. TK – It’s nice that you apologized for your comments. But, even if your post had been factually correct, it comes across as very rude. I wouldn't even respond if this were an isolated incident. But, you have claimed on numerous occasions how much you dislike confrontation, yet you are often times the instigator of this type of conflict on the board. Please try to keep the tone of your posts is less offensive going forward. If you want to address this with anyone further, it’s probably best to do it by PM so we can keep this kind of negativity off the board.

FP - I think Analog Man has plenty of actual merits and I believe many others feel that it does as well. I'm not clear about what you meant in your post, but I presume that you are not dismissing the album as having no merits. If you don't like it, fair enough, but I think there are several threads in this forum that discusses the album's merits. Maybe not every song is great, but it sure has a good share of high quality material on it, IMHO.

If you go into Google News, you can set up an alert for recent news about any member of the band. It comes to you in an e-mail. Usually the alerts are not very interesting - like a post has been added to their threads on EOC/the Border, but sometimes it's real news. If something is happening with the Eagles, like the documentary release or their appearance at Sundance, you'll get several alerts per day. I guess its not really a news feed, like constantly scrolling across my screen, but that would be cool! Just Google news alert.

Joe is mentioned in this recent interview with guitarist Joe Satriani:

http://www.ontourmonthly.com/qa-joe-satrianin-vinny-cecolindavid-huff/

OTM: I recently spoke with former Eagles guitarist Don Felder who once asked band mate Joe Walsh, “Why would you put your successful solo career on hold to join a band?” Walsh explained that it was like night and day. As a member of a band, he wasn’t responsible for everything. Do you experience the same thing with Chickenfoot?
Ironically, I am staring at a copy of Felder’s bestselling autobiography Heaven and Hell. For some reason, during the last couple of months, I’ve been on this Joe Walsh and Don Felder thing. I have been collecting vintage Fender amps. I’m a big fan of Don’s playing and I am a huge Joe Walsh fan.

Well...that was startling. I got about 3/4 of the way through. I like it any time any artist references/samples the Eagles (not that I have actually heard a lot of samples.) This isn't even a sample, its the entire song with new lyrics. Who is singing those couple of verses, though? That's not Joe - does it say on twitter or whatever who that song features??

I really don't know who sings what. I assume it's Eminem but I don't know enough about what he does to know. I still can't get over how craptastic it is. I also can't get over how the kids on Twitter are saying it's genius. One from this morning:

"the best song mmlp2 is "So far.." Easily... Eminem basically just introduced Joe Walsh to all the hip hop heads. GOOD MUSIC"

So, even tho it's awful I hope it does introduce Joe to an even wider audience.

On a side note, sodascout, I will never look at Glenn the same way again. I love your halloween avatar!! I think of Glenn as a sports type of guy so to see him as a vampire is a crack up! It really works.

Joe was either thinking $$ or wider audience or..... he doesn't have any control over it. I saw one show of Joe's on youtube where he talks about loosing control of his own catalog, and having to ask record business people to use them, etc.... I wonder. I wonder if he's heard this. Meanwhile, every classic rock web site is talking about this, this morning.

MaryCalifornia
10-31-2013, 01:32 PM
That doesn't sound like Eminem singing those verses. We'll see...

I don't like all of the bad words in this song, would never listen to it - the only Eminem songs I've heard have been on the radio, so they're clean. Having said that - he is very talented and very influential. I know it is not most Borderers' style of music, nor mine. However, I do like a couple of his songs from prior years, including "Lose Yourself" which won the Oscar for best original song for a film, beating out songs by U2 and Paul Simon. It also won two Grammys. I also like his more recent song with Rihanna.

I would be interested to read the lyrics of this song as a poem, not listening to him sing it. Or, even listening to a clean version. Anyway, it will be very interesting to see how far this song goes, great timing for the Eagles!

Cursing never bothers me but bad music does.

Here's a link to the lyrics:

It was this small article that said Eminem was singing. However, does a Classic Rock site really know? I sure don't.

http://ultimateclassicrock.com/joe-walsh-eminem-sample/

I have been told that Eminem is an influential artist and I've even been told he's talented. I do believe he's influential, I just don't understand why. As far the 2nd one.... I just don't see it.

MaryCalifornia

So I watched Eminem on Saturday Night Live this weekend to see if he did LBG. He did not, but he did do a song to Billy Squeir's Stroke Me. Somewhere on a Billy Squier fansite, people are moaning, haha. I couldn't understand a word, but I liked the intro (which was just the regular intro to that song).

Cursing never bothers me but bad music does.

Here's a link to the lyrics:

http://www.directlyrics.com/eminem-so-far-lyrics.html

It was this small article that said Eminem was singing. However, does a Classic Rock site really know? I sure don't.

http://ultimateclassicrock.com/joe-walsh-eminem-sample/

I have been told that Eminem is an influential artist and I've even been told he's talented. I do believe he's influential, I just don't understand why. As far the 2nd one.... I just don't see it.

After hearing that song I hope one if two things happen: 1. Joe walsh gets paid for this song OR 2. Eminem gets sued by Joe Walsh and/or Irving Azoff!!

Since this horrible Eminem person is insanely rich and popular and it is virtually Joe's song, I'm betting that Joe won't have a problem getting paid.

Yeah the Eminem/LBG thing really bothers me. LBG is my favorite of Joe's, and Eminem slaughtered it, let alone trying to use it for his own "lyrics".

Kids on Twitter are absolutely eating it up. I bet Joe has had his biggest influx of new YOUNG fans this last month since maybe OAG came out. They all know who's song it is. I bet Joe's downloads of LBG has been HUGE since this song came out. I can't stand it. I don't think there's a font big enough to truly express how I feel about this slaughtering of Joe's song. Let's see....

IT SUCKS!!

Nope, nope, not quite big enough. Keep in mind I'm viewing this on 40" monitor. No lie.

Thanks for posting this. I don't think I've ever read it before. I like that Joe gives Don & Glenn credit for helping him w/his vocals. I read a more recent interview in which he also mentioned that they really taught him how to sing well. If you listen to the first James Gang live album (pre-Eagles, obviously) it's really, ummm, OBVIOUS that Joe got better when he started hanging around the Eagles. Technically Joe's solo live album is pre-Eagles but only by moments. He had already been hanging around them a lot at that time. They're on the album. The improvement in Joe's vocals between those two live albums are amazing.

I also like how ahead of his time he was. Talking about environmental issues in the early '80's. It's been a running theme in his music that I've always admired.

Thanks again!

Long Term Guardians of Santa Cruz Island (http://www.thecifilm.com/)

The film will tell the story of two very different men, a rock star and an old country priest, who have long shared a commitment to preserve Santa Cruz Island, the largest of California’s eight Channel Islands. Monsignor Francis Weber and musician Joe Walsh (https://www.facebook.com/JoeWalshOfficial) have dedicated themselves to protecting the vision of Carey Stanton, who owned and protected the island from 1957 until his death in 1987. In the film, Walsh says, “I told Carey, we’ve got his back. We’ll watch out for Santa Cruz after he’s gone.” And these two men have done just that.

Their goal is for 8 half hour programs in addition to a 2 hour film. They have raised over half the money they need. I'm sure that the Joe involvement is to make people aware of the fact that they are essentially fund raising at this time.
