Well - IMO, if you really want to explore Glenn's solo work, you should start with the Strange Weather album. To me, it is the highlight of his solo work. Not far behind is No Fun Aloud. We all have certain preferences, so I'd actually recommend that you try them all.  There are celebration threads for all of Glenn's solo albums in his forum if you are interested in more information and opinions. Actually, this is not exclusive to Glenn - there are celebration thread's for almost all of the band member's solo work in their respective forums. Hope you have lots of time and have fun!

OHHH I was listening to Strange Weather on the net about 2 days ago and just downloaded it today. I love that album as well. LOL I will say that I have always been a Glenn Frey fan, but not like this:smitten:. I've been buying his music like crazy and want to learn everything there is to know about him. I AM CRAZY FOR HIM!!!!!!! I will have fun for sure. I've been listening to a lot of his work. I love Don's solo as well and need to know more about the other guys solo work. They are just an incredible group with the most extrodinary performers/writer/singers ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with Dreamer. By all means check out After Hours - his vocals are magnificent, and it's his latest work. However, if you want material more indicative of his talents as both a songwriter and musician as well as a vocalist, Strange Weather and No Fun Aloud are your best bets.

ETA: It sounds like you already know all of this, OM13! Go for it! I was just like you in 2005. I progressed from the Eagles to his Greatest Hits Solo Collection, and I liked that enough to start purchasing his back catalog. He wasn't on iTunes back then, so I had to go find his stuff used. After listening to Strange Weather, I was a full-fledged hardcore and started building my first Eagles-related site, Glenn Frey Online (http://www.glennfreyonline.com). All that happened in like three months, lol, and it eventually led to my Eagles site and this message board. He's Da Man!

Outlawman13
03-17-2013, 11:51 PM
Yes he is da man for sure. LOL. I'm building up my collection. I just bought Soul Searching from Amazon and Strange Weather (from Itunes). I love Strange Weather and After Hours. His voice is so undescribible. OHh his Greatest Hits is what I bought first though. LOL so now I'm just so obsessed with this one man who has an incredible band. LOL I'm going to be full fledged with Glenn and the Eagles soon (when I get the 6 album set from Amazon). All of their first 6 albums up until they broke up. So I get to have almost all of their songs. I have grown up listening to Glenn Frey and Don Henley since my mom is a Henley fan and my dad is a Frey fan. LOL so I listened to both of them when I was young and the Eagles. I liked them then, and now I fricking love them. LOL.

so I don't remember where I saw it or who said it, but someone On the Border was talking about how they expected a 3 hour Eagles live show, and was disappointed when the Vegas show was shorter than that.
Someone else asked where they got the idea that the Eagles play a 3 hour show...
well I was watching this Glenn interview and he says that the Eagles do a 3 hour show (at the 6.57 minute mark)..so maybe this is where that person heard that!

it's also a pretty good interview if you haven't seen it!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxUPNnmk2xA&sns=em

also I wonder if Glenn had just eaten haha..this is the second interview I've watched where it looks like he's picking stuff out of his teeth with his tongue.

That interview was from last June, and I don't care what he said, last year the Eagles were not doing a three hour show! The fansites as well as Ticketmaster reviews were pretty emphatic that the three show had gone away and been away for some time.

He said in a recent interview in Australia or New Zealand they would go back to a three hour set list for the upcoming tour.

I just heard him say that and it reminded me of what i read here, and just saying maybe "there's rumors going round" about a 3 hour show still ..started by Glenn haha

Well that would be cool if they bring the 3 hours show back :)

I'm sure those that have been around awhile have already seen this, but I never had, and it popped up on a Google alert this morning. Glenn and Jimmy Buffet doing Margaritaville at Aspen High School in 1977. The lighting isn't the best, but it's a good watch. Includes the 'lost' cocaine verse.

Is it just me, or is he not singing the high notes in the song? Seems like like he drops out and let the background singers do them when they get to the repeated sections and the chorus. Msybe he blew his voice doing the solo show?

Yep. He and Stevie Nicks both pull that trick whenever they don't feel confident they'll make the note. Guess it was a bit of an off night in that regard.

05-14-2013, 01:35 PM
I know singers and bands drop the key down on songs to help them reach the notes. I was wondering why they couldn't do that for Randy back then. Is it that big of a deal for musicians? Probably so if they haven't rehearsed it first. I can't imagine they wouldn't do it because of the audience. Most people wouldn't even notice if the key was lowered.

OMNJ, I was confused about your comments, too. I didn't see where anyone mentioned Glenn's interview with Bob Costas in this thread. I'll just put this here because it's worth a mention. We have YouTube on our TV (please don't ask me to explain this) so last night I made hubby watch the Route 66 video & the House of Blues Werewolves of London. Route 66, in HD, is such excellent quality that he couldn't really complain about it (we did watch a lot of stuff he likes as well, such as Glenn Hughes in Gateshead, the show he went to). I didn't try finding the Wiltern video - next time!

- it's a nickname that was given to him by Linda Ronstadt

- when they played in Aspen in the early days this was under the name "Teen King and the Emergencies"
- in the documentary at about the part where Irving Azoff comes on board, Glenn answers the phone with "Teen King and the Emergencies"
- there's a song by a christian singer/songwriter about Glenn which is called "Teen King"

If you haven't had a chance to visit, I highly recommend the National Naval Aviation Museum (http://www.navalaviationmuseum.org/)in Pensacola FL. Besides being an outstanding aviation museum with tons of planes on display, they also have an IMAX theatre and a couple of simulators you can play in. My favorite part though is most Tuesdays and Wednesdays you can watch the Blue Angels practice and afterwards they visit with the spectators, pose for photos & sign autographs. IMO the only thing better than watching the Blue Angels is gazing at the Blue Angels pilots!! :hilarious: I think it is a requirement to be good looking!

It's amazing what turns up! I'm not sure I'd have even picked up that it was two different singers without being told as they sound surprising similar. But on closer listening, I do hear that half of each verse is sung by a different person and they both sing the chorus. It does sound like Glenn. For example, the words "searchin'" and "there" in this part:

"But I look uptown, downtown, all around searchin'
I know she's out there waiting for me."

Glennsallnighter

Definitely sounds like it's Glenn . And he sounds like how he does on some of his 'Soul Searchin' tracks (it's reminiscent to me of SKOB, not the tune but the way it's sung). SS was released in 88 so the timeline fits too. Nice find.

Glenn would also produce and release on on his own label, Mission Records, Max Carl's later album One Planet, One Groove. It contains several co-writes and vocal guest appearances as well, including the duet "Show Me the Money."
http://glennfreyonline.com/solo/guest/carloneplanetonegroove.htm

New member. Just testing. This 1974+ video from Aspen grassroots public tv used to be posted on youtube but I can't find it so you have to down load it. It's worth the 6 minutes wmv downloading. Does this post work? Midway through, Glenn Frey (with signature sunglasses on his beautiful long hair) singing Margaritaville with Jimmy Buffet and the late, great Steve Weisberg (John Denver's band) playing slide dobro. The first part has the beautiful Chris Cox singing songs which should've been part of the Eagles' repertoire. He looked like an Eagle and he, and Richard Hathaway, were always in demand at Jake's Bar in Aspen 1974/1975/1976/1977. Glenn, Henley, Buffett, Steve W. and the boys from the Dirt Band used to show up at Jakes. This video is a time capsule of Aspen in the 1970's! Hope it posts and you can download it and figure out how to upload it to youtube, where it deserves to be preserved! Actually, now that I look at the dates, I'm pretty sure Glenn and Buffet are playing in 1976, summer, when Jimmy Buffet got married in Aspen and Glenn and Henley were at the wedding. Chris Cox video maybe around 1973. His "Untitled Love Song" was played in winter 1975 at Jake's. Beautiful song. Should've been an Eagles song. A question for Glenn and Henley should be "did you ever meet Chris Cox? He was a great guitarist, songwriter, and singer." I wonder what Glenn and Henley would say, because Chris Cox was a huge presence in Aspen in the 1970's. You can see Steve Weisburg alot in the background, helping create the early 70's sound of Aspen. Lol there's a lot of people in the background!

Yep - I loved the backstage interview when the lady reporter gave Glenn the red roses. It is too bad if it's down. I went over to GFO to see if Soda had a download of it, but I didn't see it at a first glance. She does have video of Glenn's songs for that concert though. Here's the link ...

http://www.glennfreyonline.com/downloads/multimedialivevideo.htm

She also has some other good downloads in the Live Treats and Fun Stuff sections ... and not just on GFO, but the other guys sites as well. Definitely worth checking out sometimes if you haven't already done so.

I don't know if anyone has posted this song yet. I love it. It reminds me of Motown or something. Not sure why it surprised me that he wrote a Motown/soul-sounding song because History of the Eagles mentions he was born in Detroit. I haven't heard too many of Glenn's solo songs so it was quite a surprise to find this.

I agree. Why quit listening/watching when they are gone? Do you still listen to the Beatles/John Lennon or Elvis? Or how many others that are gone? Their music helps me remember them. Yes, right now it's painful, but as always, the music helps.

I know I'm not going to stop listening to the Eagles, Glenn's solo work, the other guys solo work or stop watching HOTE. We have three surviving Eagles who will still continue to do stuff. So I know I will continue to support them. They are my top 5 favorite group. I can't stop.

I listen to the Bee Gees and I didn't stop after Robin and Maurice died especially when Barry and Robin ended The Bee Gees after Maurice died.

I'm not sure where to put this, but I'll probably remove it in a few days.

I've come across a good quality downloadable bootleg from Glenn's two 1982 Boston shows. If anyone is interested, I'll send the link by PM. Of course, downloading bootlegs comes with a health warning. The setlist has 8 songs from NFA, 3/4 Eagles songs and 3 covers. A vulnerable "Peaceful Easy Feeling" made me sad but Glenn singing "Cool Jerk" certainly made me smile.

I will continue to do all the above, but I was specifically referring to doing screenshots of old videos & converting music files to MP3. All Shook Up.... a minor song. It was minor when Elvis did it. One of my great regrets regarding Glenn's solo career is that when he chose to do cover versions, prior to After Hours, he did songs like this. Yes, his choice. He was capable of so much more.

So I have been finding different Glenn Frey solo songs on youtube thus making my list of 45 rpm records to find longer and longer. Here is one that has made the list:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUw8GjHRxzE

For some reason it reminds me of a soul singer or a soul song. I love the fact that Glenn seems to like soul music. I was raised on soul music but that's a whole other story for another time. I don't know if Glenn has done anymore soul sounding songs other than "True Love". Also I never knew there was a video to this song. Anyone know what the singles were from "No Fun Aloud"? I dont know why but Glenn sounds even better to me when he duets on songs and contrasts his voice with someone else like all his great Don/Glenn duets.

Prompted by Janette writing about a BBC radio interview in the "remembering" thread, I went looking for other interviews with the BBC. The BBC's listings aren't very good for Glenn - I think they linked to one interview with Joe and Tim with Simon Mayo. In that, Simon talks about having Glenn on the show and with the help of Google, I was able to find it. It's a lovely interview but I find it hard to hear about his future plans. Apart from Glenn singing at the piano, my favourite bit is his reaction to the messages sent into the show.

Glad I prompted you to prompt me to find this show!! Thanks. It was good to hear him talking about Barnes. I was actually on a long, long walk by the Thames going through Barnes on the day he died but, of course, I had no idea...

As I mentioned in my blog tribute to him, I had 'transfered out' to write about classical music, opera etc back in the 80s. I was intrigued to read somewhere that our great London Symphony Orchestra played on "Desperado". I love little connections like that.

I noticed that in this 2012 interview he said that his parents were still alive. Is that still the case? How sad if it is. Given their ages, he could have hoped for longevity. I was saddened to hear him talking in another interview of Joe Walsh's very robust 90 year-old father and how "Joe's father is my role model."

A quick question: I found this utterly beautiful performance of "Desperado" on what I think is a French site.http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xrnhn_the-eagles-desperado_music But it tells me nothing of when and where it comes from. Does anyone know?

I believe Glenn's mother died in September 2013. They were on tour in Canada at the time.

That Desperado performance is from the MTV show that was recorded immediately prior to the "Hell Freezes Over" tour in 1994. It's available on DVD and CD.
