We all have our favourite eras, EL. Mine is whatever he looks like now. I find it very hard to go back to 1973 when I wasn't even aware of the man and say 'he looked best then'. I just can't do that.

ETA: I honestly admit to not understanding the 'I think he looked better 30 years ago' thing at all. It's just dismissing what he looks like now. This applies to all the Eagles, not just Glenn. There is no question that Randy Meisner in particular looked better 30 years ago. To me they're being locked into a time warp.

Since I "started" with them at the beginning and "lost" them in '81, only to "find" them again in HFO to the present, the looks changing naturally over the years, the transition has been easy. It's just funny to see them 30 years ago, the young rebels, change over to the dignified "establishment" look that they rebelled against back then.

Life goes full circle.......and that ain't a bad thing.........

FP, you know that Glenn has always been on the bottom of my fav list, but HFO nearly moved him up to #1 cuz Bernie was long gone by then and Glenn was the absolute best looking of the gang at this time. Tim fans, don't get ticked at me cuz Tim never changes, he's always cute. But Glenn at this point was devastating!

To add my thoughts to the 'favourite look' debate... Personally, I never think of it in terms of 'he looked better then.' You can't really compare how a guy looked at 27 to how he looks at 61. I'll happily state that I think Don looked absolutely gorgeous in the '70s, with his beard and curly hair, but I still could never say that I prefer him that way. To me, he's just as attractive now. It's just that, in the shallow pursuit of ogling pictures and drooling over old videos, we all have our favourite looks or hairstyles or outfits - and sometimes, it's fun to indulge in those! I suppose it also comes down to personal associations and memories. I'm sure you have a fondness for those Long Run pictures, FP, as that's where you first noticed Glenn properly. It doesn't mean you want to keep him that way. I guess we're lucky the Eagles have kept gigging and putting themselves out there - so we don't have to keep them in a time warp.

(That HFO cap is delicious, by the way!)

Where did I use the word 'unfair'? No, I am not saying that at all. I wish there was more acceptance by the people who 'prefer' their 70s appearance of their current appearance, that's all. People age, rock stars included.

If people prefer the 70s era because they're nostalgic for that time, OK, but it's the 'they looked better then' part that I have difficulty with.

Poor Randy, he's still the same nice guy he was in his youth. Just didn't make the transition into middle age well. And of course I'm biased about Bernie cuz he's the only Eagle I ever met(even tho his Eagles days were long over when I met him)got to talk with and shake his hand. I think some of it has to do with our current ages as well. There is a wide age gap between us Borderers! If I want to dream that I am "twentysomething" again I can look at the 70's pictures of Glenn & find them a turn on when actually Glenn's long-haired era is my least favorite. It's a fantasy! As I am actually "fiftysomething" :depressed:, his F1 to present looks are a more realistic turn on now. Some of you still are "twentysomething" or younger! :jealous:

HFO is in a category by itself. No matter what age I am (or was) his HFO era has to be his hottest. JMHO :)

Note: Who am I kidding, even meeting Glenn & just saying hello is complete fantasy! There are good, bad & smokin' pictures from each era!

I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from... because honestly, I don't. I don't prefer Randy's 70s look because I'm "nostalgic for that time." I prefer it because his appearance is more aesthetically pleasing to me using my own personal criteria when it comes to physical desirability. Not to pick on Randy - time takes its toll upon us all - it's just he's the most obvious example.

I "accept" Glenn's look now and I still find him very attractive, but to pretend like I don't prefer his 1994 look because apparently one ought to prefer "Whatever he looks like now" - well, that just seems silly to me. What if he suddenly dyes his hair dark pink, gives himself a mohawk, botoxes his face until it's absolutely immobile and starts wearing poodle skirts and cone bras (ala early 90s Madonna) to perform? Would you be sitting there saying "Whatever he looks like now is his best look"?

Well, quite. And my criteria for 'now' are the same as yours for Randy 'then'.

It's ironic because the period when I saw him for the first time, 1988, was perhaps my LEAST favourite look - but because that's what I saw, I suppose that is what made me think 'I have to like whichever is the current look best'.

This, as everyone knows, is what I saw 'then'...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/ozeagle/Solo%20Years/August%201988/FreyAug8810.jpg

His hair was far too short in that period. And then, in 1995, it was really short again! I never saw the HFO hair length.

This is what I saw in 2004:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/ozeagle/Farewell%20One/AlreadyGone21.jpg

Let's face it, you can say good/bad about both.

Regarding the long hair era, my personal preference is for the moustache. I am not a fan of his long hair without it. Even then, however, I would make an exception for your current avatar photo:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v242/ozeagle/Eagles%20in%20the%2070s/1974.jpg

ETA: I think what GL said about someone's age influencing which era they prefer has merit. I am 49 and so perhaps that is why I prefer the current period (notice I am no longer saying 'the current period is the best and that's the end of it')!

I'm reading this discussion and thinking about my love for the way Cat Stevens looked in the 70's. Talk about a major change in looks! I'll never have that again (although I'll bet if he dyed his hair and beard he'd be close!) It just makes me sad, and then I think of how shallow I'm being.

Fortunately for us, the four current Eagles have aged very well, and it's pleasant to look at photos from all eras.

WOW-what an assumption! Sorry but I am VERY accepting of their current appearance. Just because I liked the 70's era Glenn doesn't make me "unaccepting" of him now. I also liked Randy's 70's look better, and Timothy's HFO era better. Again.... I "accept" them just as much now. That being said--I also "accept" my appearance now also. It's all part of aging.

As far as nostalgia... damn right I'm nostalgic! I would love to have some of those times back of first discovery in 1973/74 of this band!! Mind you, I wouldn't want to actually go back-I was 11 for goodness sake! I'd be lying if I said I don't think of those times with fondness! I hardly think that makes me any less "accepting" than you are when it come to the Eagles. I also get nostalgic for the Long Run era (when I first saw Timothy) the HFO era (when I got to "rediscover" them) and 2007 when we finally heard new stuff from them on LROOE!! Hell, I'm nostalgic for the first Eagles concert I got to see!! Why is that wrong? It keeps my LOVE for them alive!!!

I "accept" Glenn's look now and I still find him very attractive, but to pretend like I don't prefer his 1994 look because apparently one ought to prefer "Whatever he looks like now" - well, that just seems silly to me. Exactly!!!!!

It's just that, in the shallow pursuit of ogling pictures and drooling over old videos, we all have our favourite looks or hairstyles or outfits - and sometimes, it's fun to indulge in those! I suppose it also comes down to personal associations and memories.

Again, I believe this is spot on! And there's nothing wrong with that. It doesn't make anyone LESS of a fan than the next. I hate assumptions regarding my fandom!

Brooke
04-08-2010, 01:51 PM
Well, I'm probably one of the worst about preferring their 70's looks and being all shallow about it. I think, for me, seeing all the old pictures and videos just takes me back in time and I remember myself during that time. I was 16 when I first heard Take It Easy. And if I hadn't been a country bumpkin stuck in the boondocks of Missouri with no way to get out, I'd have probably ran off to California to be a groupie! (:shh: Don't tell my kids or my husband!) But I'm not living in the past. It just brings back the memories and yes, makes me feel nostalgic. Who doesn't want to relive good times once in a while?

I do appreciate the guys even today in their 60's. They have aged well and I still find them very attractive men. (Most especially Glenn and Don, if you didn't know! ) But I do say that I prefer their looks from when they were young. I prefer my own looks when I was young, too! But we can't change that, can we?! :hilarious:

I think everyone associates certain events in their life with certain things, especially music. Just like every time I hear the song Maggie Mae, it brings back the memory of a hayride I went on at 16 with high school friends. I can remember exactly what I wore, how long my hair was, who was there, (and who wasn't!) and what happened, all because of hearing that song on a radio we had playing by the bonfire.

But Fp, I am 53 and I don't prefer their "current period." But that doesn't mean I don't like it. I'd much rather have it than have nothing from them.

And my husband introduced me to the Eagles in 1972, but that's another story from days gone by! Ok, I'm rambling now!

I don't know if it's because I'm not a political conservative but I'm not a 'nostalgia' person (I don't wish to give the impression that conservatism is only about nostalgia - if so I am sorry, but in my own mind for this scenario there seems to be a relationship of some sort). Whenever I read reviews saying 'the audience was transported back in time to a happier period which brought back so many memories of..... etc' I shake my head because that doesn't apply to me. I don't look back on my high school days when I first heard the 70s Eagles songs, with any particular feeling of nostalgia. Even the Long Run period when I first 'fell' for Glenn when I was at university, I don't really look back at those years very often. So that makes me the opposite of Brooke & TBF and it probably also makes me in a minority on the board. I don't think I explained why I prefer the current look very well, either. I wonder if this deserves a separate topic.

I will now post a couple of photos from a few years ago and just say that those Allnighter era photos are hot.

There you go. I should have known that would create controversy. I tend to associate 'looking back to when times were better' (nostalgia) with 'things were better then so there is no need to change anything now (conservatism).

Apparently I can't say anything at the moment without putting both feet squarely in my mouth.

FP, you certainly are using some unique reasoning. It seems to me that you prefer what you feel Glenn would want you to prefer - ie, his current look - or, as you yourself put it, "whatever he looks like now." In other words, whatever he does is what you like best - there's no other criteria. Not only that, but you seem to feel that those who do not prefer his current look are somehow insulting him, and thus you get upset on Glenn's behalf when the viewpoint is expressed and feel the need to chastise those who express it. Am I close?

P.S.: It also seems to me that the complex concepts of political conservatism and a basic preference for a different look than his current one share nothing more than your disapproval.

That said, he looks magnificent in this photo:

I may have been born in the wrong era... because I've often said, I wish I were in my late teens/ early 20's when the Eagles first broke onto the scene.

While I think each of the guys has aged well, I make no bones about loving Glenn's 70's look. "the bad boy"... The long hair, the mustache, his thin trim body... things that appeal to "my" visual senses. Of course he was more muscular and beautiful in the 80's, so yeah, still hot... the 90's to now, aging wonderfully... but that long hair... I always go back to the long hair...

The long hair isn't really my thing, but Glenn makes it hot, especially when the photos are from concerts. There's just something about that man when he performs! I think the only eras I don't like are the Longbranch Pennywhistle days, the Let's Get Harry look of "Spence," and the Soul Searchin' uber-buff crew cut days (he went a bit overboard, IMHO, although the muscle shirts were nice). Perhaps it's telling that those were eras where we don't see many concert shots. Otherwise, delicious.

And still gorgeous after all these years!

No, we all three must be triplets, cause this fits me perfectly, too! But I was born in that era! (just a little premature!)

TBF, I'm laughing to myself, because I don't think I even realized it before...but maybe the long hair has something to do w/our Timothy love! (Excellent singing voice aside, of course)

ETA: Triplets work well... I think Glenn would have liked that! :hilarious: Just kidding... maybe...

The other one that catches my fancy is the one under it, the tux look. Now it's a toss-up between Glenn and Joe for a new sig, lol.
