And Doolin-Dalton Instrumental ;)

If you swapped Earlybird for something like Saturday Night or Chug All Night that would be pretty much my perfect early Eagles setlist. I suspect Doolin-Dalton would have been in before the Reprise (like it was on DKRC and the Seattle bootleg), it would be quite bizarre to perform it alone, bearing in mind pretty much all its context is in the original.

I think it says a lot about just how quickly Henley became the 'voice' (rightly or wrongly) of the band: on the first album he only has two leads, the same as Bernie, and one less than Glenn and Randy. Both singles from Desperado were Glenn leads, and the parity in vocals pretty much stayed until (after) On the Border (3 shared and 1 joint each for Don and Glenn, 2 for Randy, 1 Bernie).

We should keep in mind that those set lists aren't necessarily accurate.

As for swapping out Earlybird... That was a real showpiece for Bernie back in the day. He did an amazing banjo solo at the end that lifts it far above the album version. I was hoping he'd play that for this tour, but it might have been too high energy for the early half of the show.

Did Bernie play banjo during the HOTE concerts?

When he was asked to join up with the band, I can imagine him asking "Shall I bring my banjo?"

Even with Bernie I couldn't see them performing, yee ha, country music like Midnight Flyer or Foggy Mountain Breakdown.

I'd love to see Bernie and Joe do the bluegrass Doolin/Dalton reprise. On the Desperado album, Bernie plays both instruments.

Found this ages ago but rediscovered it the other day:

I wonder if that's just JD's own take on it or if that's what D-D was originally before they decided to forge the Reprise out of it?

I heard him do this version live several years ago. It's fantastic. From the way he talked about it, I think it's an earlier "draft" of what the Eagles recorded.

Yep - I love that too. However, I have to say, I'm glad the Eagles versions with two songs turned out the way they did.

Quick question: Does anyone know what was etched into the runout grooves of side 2? I just discovered "Craig says hi" on side 1 of my copy, but I can't find anything on side 2. :headscratch:

Mine has the super-exciting "EAGLES Side Two Stereo". The other side is equally exciting. However, it is a UK pressing. I don't have anything on "Eagles" or "On the Border".

I thought the etchings were originally a Walsh/Szymcyck thing.

Mine has the super-exciting "EAGLES Side Two Stereo". The other side is equally exciting. However, it is a UK pressing. I don't have anything on "Eagles" or "On the Border".

Just discovered that my copy has that super exciting phrase as well! :hilarious: (it's hard to read those etchings)

I decided to listen to Desperado a littke while ago while reading a fictional book that takes place in the wild west circa 1877. (Which is how I finally figured out what was on the run grooves on side 2). Listening to Doolin' Dalton while reading about an outlaw robbing a Wells Fargo stagecoach of $20,000 fits perfectly.

Anyway, this listen has made the album click with me again. Before I became a huge fan, Desperado was my favorite Eagles album and the only one I owed. It has slipped down to being my 4th favorite album. However, this particular listen made me realize (again) how much I love this album. It's country rock at its finest, with beautiful ballads and some hard rockers. It's made me rethink my the listing of my favorite Eagles albums. I don't think that the list will ever become permanent! Lol

I see that I haven't done a ranking on this album:
1. Outlaw Man (my favorite Eagles song)- 5
2. Desperado - 5
3. Out of Control- 5
4. Doolin Dalton- 5
5. Tequila Sunrise -5
6.Doolin Dalton/ Desperado (resprise)- 4
7. Bitter Creek- 4
8. Certain Kind of Fool- 4
9. Saturday Night- 3
10. Twenty- One- 3

This is one of my favorite Eagles albums too (along with "Hotel California" and "On the Border") not counting the Greatest Hits albums I grew up with. I always loved the Western theme they did with it and the photo shoot. Of course some of the songs take on a new meaning now but still love it.

Happy 43rd Desperado. The album that made me fall in love with the Eagles and still my favourite Eagles album, and probably my second or third ever. From the lonesome yearning of Saturday Night to the legendary status of the title track to the soaring harmonies that end D-D/D Reprise it is an absolute joy to listen to.

HAPPY 43RD ANNIVERSARY TO DESPERADO!!!

I absolutely adore this album from start to finish. It's second only to Hotel California for me.

And shun, thanks for finding the Under the Cover videos. I need to go back and watch that whole DVD sometime soon - it's very entertaining. Henry and Gary have an impressive list of credits for sure.

Yes, thank you, Shun! I enjoyed the America segment too - gorgeous scenery, and I can't get over how young Gerry Beckley in particular looked.

How about Don H. saying he didn't have very much to do with the first Eagles album? He talks like he was a bystander or something. Yeah, he *only* wrote Witchy Woman, their second big hit and a classic, timeless standard - that's all. What a slacker.

A few days late but happy 43rd anniversary to this superb album!

Desperado is my second favourite Eagles album, although there are some days when it tops the tree for me (Hotel California remains my favourite on balance, but there's not that much in it). I love the whole thing from start to finish, all of the songs are very strong and I think all of the band members get their chances to shine. The writing is more consistently strong than the debut album, which can partly be attributed to the start of the Henley/Frey songwriting team, but I can't fault Randy or Bernie's contributions here either - Certain Kind of Fool and Bitter Creek are wonderful songs, and Twenty One is great as it's the only truly happy song on the album when the outlaws are at the start of their journey (it was also a neat little reference to Emmett Dalton's age at the time).

Musically, Bernie's versatility on this album is amazing - the debut album already showed how good he was with a Telecaster and a banjo, but here he also shines on dobro and mandolin. Glenn's harmonica on Doolin-Dalton and Randy's bass solo on Outlaw Man are also great moments. I cannot pick one single song on this album as a personal highlight, as the whole Doolin-Dalton and Desperado arc is extremely special to me and I prefer to consider those three songs combined as my favourites. If you put a gun to my head (this is the Desperado thread after all!), I'd nominate the Reprise as it combines the previous two great songs and offers a fantastic lyric in its own right.

One thing I'd love to mention is the transitions between songs on this album, which are extremely clever and well done. I love the moment when the banjo of the Doolin-Dalton instrumental gives way to the intro of Outlaw Man, but to me the song that is most cleverly incorporated into the album is Out Of Control. I love the moment when those power chords rudely interrupt the outro to Twenty-One and then when Glenn screams and the song proper starts. But even better to me is the way that it leads onto Tequila Sunrise - after the powerful extended climax to Out Of Control (which itself works, possibly, as a musical replication of a gunfight), hearing the lone guitar that opens the next song is a fantastic metaphor for waking up the following morning with a terrible hangover, wondering whether the wild night had ever actually happened.

I also have to say that the Doolin-Dalton/Desperado (Reprise) is one of the few times in music when opening with the vocal really does work (there are other songs which do use this effectively, but generally I'm not a great fan if this technique is overused), and it's because the imagery is so powerful and vivid, setting the scene perfectly for the finale.

Congratulations, Desperado!!

What a great album! I'm so glad it's stood the test of time and is being appreciated more by both critics and the public as a standout work. According to acclaimedmusic.net (a website that "aggregates music critics' lists and ratings of albums and songs"), this album is ranked #1329 out of 3000 albums, the 2nd highest-ranking of the 4 ranked Eagles albums on the list (as of 8/21/2015). After this album, the band made a major transition -- in sound, personnel and producer. Perhaps that's why reviews such as Michael Gallicci's in "Ultimate Classic Rock" say Desperado is the band's "last stand at innocence."

There's not a single song here that I dislike, although I'm a bit burned out on "Desperado" since I heard both the original and Linda Ronstadt's versions so many times in the 70s, then Clint Black's cover in the 90s was in constant radio play.

Here's a video of "Out of Control" with a cool Glenn guitar solo and a great bass groove by Randy. Don gets a good workout on those drums too. I like Bernie's little kick at the end.

Happy 44th Desperado! An utterly, utterly wonderful album. From the lonesome harmonica that starts it to the rousing harmonies that end it, through the folk, country and rock that lie in between it's a delight to listen to.

My personal highlights are the perfectly-crafted Tequila Sunrise, the despondent but beautiful Saturday Night and the soaring aforementioned closer. My absolute favourite in the Eagles's discography.

Lots of Birthday Love for DESPERADO! I was in the fifth grade when this came out! Most things you liked that young don't carry on to adulthood. But their music has appeal on so many different levels. The lyrics have more depth the older you get. And they were so young! A band ( and album) for all time!

I've never thought about this before, but where does "Bitter creek" fit in in the rock'n'roller analogy? The final verse sounds like a reunion/farewell tour and cashing in.

Without giving it much thought (it's a Friday and I've just finished work! ;)) I would say it deals with the allure and draw of the rock and roll lifestyle; making your own way etc: not too dissimilar from some of the aspects in Certain Kind of Fool. The lines that stand out for me are 'Out where the desert meets the sky...' (the escapism) and 'I can't wait to see the old man's face...' (the sort of dreams of what they could accomplish).

Happy 45th anniversary to my second favorite Eagles album ...

DESPERADO!!!

To me, this album has grown better with time. I never gained a full appreciation for it until about 10 - 15 years ago when I bought my Eagles box set and listened to it intently after many years. This album is one of the band's most influential pieces of work and they have performed every song on it live. I love the line that Glenn used about it in the Under the Covers DVD when looking at some old photos - "This isn't history, it's evidence". And Soda, also love your celebration banner - in the same DVD, Don describes how cool it was to ride down Sunset Blvd. and see themselves on a billboard.

I was just scanning this thread (which is very interesting if I must say so myself) and was reminded of a little 'game' we used to do several years ago. Since we aren't going to do a Survivor game for Desperado yet, I thought it may be something interesting to revive, especially for some of our newer members.

If you go back to pages 10 - 13 in this thread, you will see how this all worked. I'll go ahead and repost the beginning post here. If you want to post your list, I'll recalulate the results and post them in about a week. For older members who already contributed, you can repost your list if you like, but I won't include them in the final compilation.

So here goes - I'm going to recap how this works for those folks who may be new to this ...

This isn’t exactly a game, but more like a poll with no other purpose than to be an exercise of fun. I’m going to list all the songs on the album and ask folks to rank them in the order that they like the songs from favorite to least favorite. I’ll give folks a week to post their list in this thread, and then I’ll calculate the results so you can see how close your list is to the combined results.

I’ll calculate the lists like this. There are 10 songs on the album, so I’ll assign a point value of 10 points to the song that each person lists in 1st place, 9 points for the 2nd place song, and so on until the last place song gets 1 point as follows:

Song 1 – 10 points
Song 2 – 9 points
Song 3 – 8 points
Song 4 – 7 points
Song 5 – 6 points
Song 6 – 5 points
Song 7 – 4 points
Song 8 – 3 points
Song 9 – 2 points
Song 10 – 1 point

For example, Person A puts the song ‘ABC’ in 3rd place so it gets 8 points; Person B puts ‘ABC’ in 5th place so it gets 6 points; and Person C puts ‘ABC’ in 6th place so it gets 5 points. So all total, the song ‘ABC’ gets 19 points. Then, Person A puts the song ‘XYZ’ in 1st place so it gets 10 points; Person B puts ‘XYZ’ in 4th place so it gets 7 points; and Person C puts ‘XYZ’ in 2nd place so it gets 9 points. So all total, the song ‘XYZ’ gets 26 points.

After I calculate the combined scores from everyone’s list, I’ll post the list in the order of which songs had the highest points to the lowest. You will be able to see how close your list comes to the “master” list. If others post a list after a week, I’ll update it with their scores. So here we go – the songs for the Desperado album are as follows:

Doolin-Dalton
Twenty-One
Out of Control
Tequila Sunrise
Desperado
Certain Kind of Fool
Outlaw Man
Saturday Night
Bitter Creek
Doolin-Dalton/Desperado Reprise

Happy (belated) Anniversary to Desperado!!

While Don has alluded to this before, here he directly credits Stephen Foster for the song, “Desperado.”

"My grandmother lived with us. She sat in a rocking chair every day, singing hymns and Stephen Foster songs: 'My Old Kentucky Home,' 'Way Down Upon the Suwanee River' and 'The Old Folks At Home,' and all those very American things.
"That's probably where I got 'Desperado.' If you listen to that melody and those chords ... Billy Joel said to me the minute he heard it, 'That's Stephen Foster! I said, 'OK, fine!'

”Like the Eagles' 'Desperado'? Don Henley says thank Stephen Foster”, L.A. Times, Sept. 25, 2015 (http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/music/posts/la-et-ms-don-henley-cass-county-eagles-desperado-20150924-story.html)

Hey all - I forgot to mention an important reminder about the poll. Once you, have posted your list, please do not edit it as I cannot go back and monitor the changes. I can make an exception if you make an egregious error that you feel must be corrected. However, you must let me know so I can ensure the change is registered. Thanks.

Dreamer, I'm sorry, I went back and edited mine - I reversed #9 and #10. I heard Bitter Creek on my Pandora at work after I posted this and thought it didn't deserve last place after all. That was the only thing I changed. If you can't count the change, I'm fine with my vote as it originally was.

I love all of these songs, for artistic and personal reasons. If I had to pick a favorite, I'd choose "(Whatever Happened To) Saturday Night."

I identify with that song, mostly in a bittersweet, beat-your-head-against-the-wall fashion. When the song came out, I lived in a canyon around L.A. in a relationship I thought would be permanent (insert sound of the world laughing). But I ended up alone in the canyon with the mountains and the moon.

The two songs I listened to constantly were "Saturday Night," and the Stones' "Wild Horses."

Such is life...

Okay - I am going to post the results of our poll. As I said earlier, I have tallied the results by combining the most recent lists with the results from the last poll. I am not including my own list or Freypower's, Sodascouts', or Brooke's since we all participated previously. So, by far, the song with the most points is the Doolin-Dalton/Desperado Reprise. In second place is Tequila Sunrise, followed very closely by Desperado. So congratulations to the awesome D-D/Deserado Reprise and here are the rest of the results ...

1. Doolin-Dalton/Desperado Reprise - 173 points
2. Tequila Sunrise - 147 points
3. Desperado - 146 points
4. Doolin-Dalton - 140 points
5. Outlaw Man - 124 points
6. Saturday Night - 102 points
7. Bitter Creek - 101 points
8. Out of Control - 92 points
9. Certain Kind of Fool - 84 points
10. Twenty-One - 46 points

As always, thanks to those who participated and if anyone else wants to post their list, please feel free, and I will update the results.

I feel that this an illegitimate list. Not that anyone cares . . .

SS – I have no problem with you disagreeing with the final results of the poll, however, I have to take issue with your assertion that the results are illegitimate. To me, illegitimacy would mean that I tallied the results unfairly or improperly as set forth in the rules that were initially established. I triple-checked my calculations, but, of course, I’m not infallible. So if anyone came up with a different result than I, I would very much appreciate your feedback and will be glad to correct any mistakes.

However, if your objection is about the rules for conducting the poll or the end results, you are certainly free to disagree. While, I wholeheartedly disagree with the order of your list, I certainly believe it is just as legitimate as mine or any others. Likewise, if we decided to conduct a similar exercise using only 5 songs from the album, the final order of finish would still be legitimate. All this poll represents is a fun, unscientific exercise that a small number of fans on this board weighed in on - nothing more.

In any event, hope everyone enjoyed participating. The biggest surprises to me were that Saturday Night gained 3 spots and Out of Control dropped 3 spots once the recent lists were tallied.

My only objection was not including Doolin-Dalton (instrumental) in the final results. After all, it was very much a separate song. There was no reason to disregard it. But please don't take my objection too seriously, I very much appreciate your efforts

I'll do it because I'm here.

I could have included the Doolin-Dalton instrumental in the original list, but decided not to because, in the past, when we did include it, it would always end up in last place. In any event, feel free to include it in your list if you like. However, I won't include it in the final tally because we all have to be ranking the same songs to get a true result.

Much respect to Lee Woodruff for choosing Karla Bonoff. I had to Google John Miller - I know him by sight (and will think of Desperado every time henceforth I see him on tv). I didn't know Mo Rocca was gay.

I should give a listen to the Karla Bonoff album. I think about it whenever Linda Ronstadt mentions it on the FM soundtrack.

The 40+ minutes or so of this program is an in-depth look at the recording of Desperado, through interviews with Glenn and Randy (not together):

Not to be obnoxious, but I had linked this program in another thread under the title that it's a celebration of OTB, but it's predominantly about Desperado.
