So a couple of friends and I are thinking about a road trip to California this summer and I was wondering what some Eagles related places there are to see. For instance, I'd love to take a picture of the hotel that was on the album cover of Hotel California. Any help would be appreciated!

Maybe you could stand on the corner in Winslow Arizona? Or see Dan Tanas or the Troubador? Just ideas! Or some of the venues they played in.

Actually we're thinking about either California or the Route 66 road trip, which I believe goes right by that corner in Winslow, AZ! lol I would love to get my picture taken there!!! Dan Tana's and the Troub would both be very cool as well, thanks for the ideas! Don't have a clue where they are so hopefully we could find them. LOL

I've been to LA twice and seen some Eagle sights. It's lots of fun!

Of course, Dan Tana's and the Troubadour are obvious choices. If you go to Dan Tana's, look for the little piece of railroad hanging on the wall. It is a piece of the railroad that used to go down the middle of Santa Monica Boulevard, and was donated by Don and Glenn to the restaurant to remember the days they hung there, before "the tracks that ran down the boulevard" got rolled away. If you're gonna eat there, be prepared to shell out. It's expensive. Check out their menu (http://www.dantanasrestaurant.com/menu_appetizers.php) to get an idea.

The Troubadour (http://www.troubadour.com/map.php) is right next door. You'll see Eagles stuff hanging on one of the walls. It's small and dark, but if you squint you can imagine Don is sitting at his favorite stool in the middle of the bar or Glenn is over at the corner table eyeing the guys who, at the time, were more famous than he was, wanting to be like them.

Drive up Mulholland and you'll pass the Coldwater Canyon and Laurel Canyon areas where the guys used to live.

The Beverly Hills Hotel (http://www.thebeverlyhillshotel.com/hotel_location/location_map.html), which is the hotel on the cover of the Hotel California album, is a must-see as well (as you've already said). I've only driven by, though.... never had the guts to walk inside such a posh place.

And yes, I know Don condemns it but.... check out the Sunset Grill (http://www.sunsetgrillhollywood.com/) on Sunset Boulevard! They make great shakes! It's a bit hard to find because the place is pretty small and the sign is high up. The parking is awful, but it's worth the effort. It looks nothing like it used to and it doesn't have the atmosphere that Don sang about, but it's a landmark nonetheless, whether he likes it or not! It's also next door to a Guitar Center with a "Walk of Fame" in front of it, which you might appreciate, Maleah.

You can also drive by the Eagles offices on Glendon Avenue (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=1100+Glendon+Avenue+Suite+2000+Los+Angeles,+CA+9 0024+&ie=UTF8&ll=34.061726,-118.443904&spn=0.008159,0.013819&z=16&iwloc=A), but they're just part of a generic looking complex.

While these aren't technically Eagles-related places, I also recommend you hop by the Rainbow Bar and Grill (http://www.rainbowbarandgrill.com/) and the Roxy (http://theroxyonsunset.com/). They might not be in their prime anymore, but they've got a lot of musical history there. They're also located right next to each other.

Sorry, I'm getting away from the topic here but I'd just thought I'd add that Route 66 also goes right through my hometown of Weatherford, OK. There's even a Route 66 museum in Clinton, OK which is just 15 miles west of Weatherford.

I went to LA in 1986 and had a cab driver drop me off at the Troubadour, which was closed. I went to the Beverly Hills Hotel, walked into the lobby and actually went down a corridor to use a toilet. Then I found a souvenir shop and bought a T shirt which I wore when I saw the band in 1995. I was outside the entrance to the Polo Lounge but I didn't think they would let me in because I was a scruffy tourist. If I ever go back I intend to try going in. I could not afford to stay there but I don't see why I shouldn't have a drink at the bar.

Route 66 does go right through Winslow, AZ. About 15 years ago BK (before kids), hubby and I visited the SW and toured the usual sites---the Grand Canyon, Sedona, Las Vegas, and then Bryce and Zion Canyons in Utah. He had this infatuation of Route 66, and so made sure that we traveled on as much of it as possible while we were out there...right through 'that corner' and beyond!

On a side note, we actually have The Route 66 Cookbook. I just looked in it to see what restaurants it features from Winslow. Apparently, the place to be is the Falcon Restaurant for homestyle fare since 1955! Try anything with their famous BBQ sauce (it sounds to die for--no fewer than 20 ingredients!), as well as their rice pudding. That's the only restaurant whose recipes are featured in the cookbook, but the text does mention a few others in Winslow. The best Chinese food in town can be found at The 2 Star Cafe. There apparently are two tiny remnants from the 1940's in Winslow that are rarely found elsewhere today--Valentine Diners--which are prefabricated aluminum diners built in 7-9 stool sizes: Irene's on 2nd St. and Leon Dodd's One Spot Grill on E. 3rd St. (ev's note: copyright of cookbook is 1993, so I would definitely check ahead on all of these locations. It seems like the only sure thing might be the Falcon.)

Wow, Nancy, you are quite the travel guide! I had visited friends in Cali when I was single, right after graduation. We had a blast. We did the Beverly Hills thing, and also just went by the Beverly Hills Hotel and took pics without going in...but I had no idea that it was the hotel on the album cover. Had I known, we might have done otherwise! Unfortunately, those friends have both moved back East. Wait, that's not what I mean...it's great that they've moved back East, now I get to see them more often!
What I meant was, in terms of visiting them in Cali...oh brother!

BTW, does Don denounce the Sunset Grill because it has changed so much?

sodascouts
04-21-2009, 11:35 AM
Yeah, Don doesn't like how the Sunset Grill now looks just like any other fast food chain, as opposed to the "old world charm" it had before. Indeed, it does seem to have been much cooler then. There was very little indoor seating - most just sat on a stool on the sidewalk at an outdoor counter. That's why you could "watch the working girls go by" - you were right there, outside. Here's a black and white photo of it (http://gallery.photo.net/photo/4087047-lg.jpg), and here's an old color photo of it (though small) (http://www.rockandrollroadmap.com/los-angeles-restaurants/the-sunset-grill/view-details.html). They still have some tables and chairs outside, but as you can see from their site (http://www.sunsetgrillhollywood.com/), that unique aspect is done with.

What Don apparently doesn't understand are some things I found out about from one of my Californian friends, who likes to go there. The reason they changed the format was not because they had "gone corporate" but because it turns out that the old format was causing health code violations. My friend confirmed this, saying that you could see from your seats how nasty and dirty the grill itself was getting from the exposure. Here's how it looked in the end (http://you-are-here.com/sunset/sunset_grill.html). Also, the "old man from the old world" was not forced to sell - he wanted to retire, and was happy to get a good price for his business. He still eats there.

Certainly Don is entitled to decide he doesn't like the new look/feel of the restaurant and therefore he doesn't want to eat there. He's entitled to say it no longer represents what it did when he wrote the song.

However, I do think it's a bit unfair of him to act like they did something wrong by modernizing to meet health standards, or that it's wrong that it was bought by a corporation from the old man. Would he rather the old man got nothing for it, and it just closed ignominiously? He actually tells everyone who asks (and some who don't) to stay away! When I told my friend this, her response was "F--k Don Henley. They make good shakes here." I had to laugh at that.

Wow Maleah - I really hope you get to visit all these sites. As I said when we came back home from the "Keep a Child Alive" Benefit, our L.A. trip was a dream weekend for any hardcore Eagles fan. It was such a treat to be able to visit all of the sights that were so important in the band's history.

As far as the Sunset Grill, I don't suspect that there are too many hard feelings with Don. They still have newspaper and magazine articles and other memorabilia posted on their walls about the the song that Don wrote about them. I would imagine it brings them a lot of customers that they may not normally get (such as us, for example).

Meleah,

You mention Route 66. I think if you look closely at the map in the southeastern part of Kansas, that Highway 166 (parts of old route 66) passes through Coffeyville, Kansas.

I've been there many times on Motorcycle rides and once even tried to find the graveyard where members of the Doolin and Dalton gang were buried. I didn't have time to give it a through investigation however. Still, Coffeyville is definitely a part of Eagles lore and would be worthy of a couple of pictures.

quote from the Historical Society website:

The Coffeyville Historical Society is governed by a 20-member Board made up of local volunteers who believe that preserving area history is important. On October 5, 1963, the Historical Society dedicated the Dalton Defenders Museum to the memory of the Coffeyville citizens who gave their lives protecting their town.

Wow, Mike, I actually didn't realize they strung 'em up just like on the Desperado album!

Nanc, I agree with your analysis of the pros/cons of the Sunset Grill makeover. The only thing is the "after" shot should have been taking without the sawhorses (or whatever those things are called) in front and the graffitied-window-covers up instead of down. It certainly would look a bit more inviting that way!

Reviving this old thread because now that I'm heading back to Los Angeles with a bit more time in January, I thought I'd look up some other places to go to that are Eagles-related and add them.

In Linda Ronstadt's book which I'm currently reading, she talks about a restaurant called Lucy's El Adobe Cafe which she thought was terrific and that Don and Glenn also ate there.

I looked it up and found out it's still open, but got a new chef or something... and it's getting a lot of bad reviews (http://www.yelp.com/biz/lucys-el-adobe-cafe-los-angeles), even by people who used to love it.

The question is - go because of the history, or stay away because it's apparently gone horribly downhill, yet still costs top dollar (about $20 for an entree)?

Any thoughts?

One option may be to just go for drinks... margaritas on the patio. The reviews of the food are, for the most part, absolutely appalling. Plus, no fajitas! The closest you come is the $19 carne asada con guacamole. People are saying the quesadillas are decent. But, again, it does have the Eagle connection.

FP, I hadn't heard about it either until I read Ronstadt's book.

Also, are there any other "Eagle landmarks" anyone can think of that a visitor to LA might add to those already mentioned in this thread? To recap, we've already mentioned:

Dan Tana's
The Troubadour
Coldwater Canyon / Laurel Canyon
The Beverly Hills Hotel
The Sunset Grill
The ERC offices on Glendon (although they're nothing special frankly)

A couple more I thought of:

Laurel Canyon Country Store (http://www.yelp.com/biz/laurel-canyon-country-store-los-angeles) where Glenn saw David Crosby after he first arrived in LA

1020 Laguna Avenue in Echo Park (https://sites.google.com/site/historicechopark/) where Glenn and JD Souther lived above Jackson Browne (although it's been turned into a fancy bungalow (http://www.theeastsiderla.com/2010/08/echo-park-prices-have-certainly-changed-since-the-glenn-fry-jackson-browne-called-it-home/) now)

I thought of some more (I know - I'm out of control)!

Studio Instrument Rentals (http://www.sir-usa.com/location.php?city=los-angeles) - where the Eagles' first rehearsal took place

Lido Apartments (http://la.curbed.com/archives/2010/04/lido_apartments_building_hollywoods_hotel_californ ia_has_sold.php) - the lobby of this is where the Hotel California's interior photo was shot (however, it seems to have gone downhill)

The Record Plant (http://www.recordplant.com/) - where the Eagles recorded a lot of their albums

Elektra/Asylum Offices (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asylum_Records) - where Geffen signed the Eagles (at its old location: 962 North La Cienega, West Hollywood, CA)

Further afield:

Joshua Tree National Park (http://www.nps.gov/jotr/index.htm) - the location of the photo shoot for the Eagles album

Paramount Ranch (http://www.lamountains.com/parks.asp?parkid=88) - the location of the photo shoot for the Desperado album (the outfits for this shoot were rented from Western Costumes (http://www.westerncostume.com/) at 11041 Vanowen St. in the San Fernando Valley - it's still open)

Ontario Motor Speedway (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontario_Motor_Speedway) - the location of California Jam

I wouldn't worry about being mortified about leaving after taking a look at the menu. It's a pretty common practice around here where I'm from. That's why a lot of restaurants have the menus posted. If you remember when you, Houston Baby, and I were in the hotel restaurant in Memphis, we originally went in to look at the menu. We decided to stay, but I think we were all in agreement that we wished we had politely excused ourselves before being seated. That overpriced place sucked hard!

as prettymaid mentioned...I've posted about this before (it's lame that they took that article down!) and I definitely want to do this trip. I've been to California a dozen times including LA and Joshua Tree (it's a magical place! that was very Gram Parsons centric for me at the time, but my JT mix cds included EAGLES of course :D) , but never did an Eagles specific tour. I have friends out there I need to visit too. It's been a few years since I've been out there. I'm gonna make it happen sooner or later!

I also just want to do a cross country roadtrip from NY to CA. with a stop in Winslow, AZ of course!

if I think of anything I can add, I will.

Laurel Canyon was home to Glenn Frey of The Eagles, who lived in a little hacienda on the corner of Kirkwood and Ridpath Drive. It was jokingly referred to as 'The Kirkwood Casino and Health Club' by its guests. The dwelling was the notorious site of many a marathon poker game and all-night drug and alcohol binge.

During my latest trip to Los Angeles, not only did I revisit some sites I'd already seen, I also added a couple new ones that were mentioned earlier in the thread to my "been there" list.

Laurel Canyon Country Store (where Glenn saw David Crosby sitting on the steps when he first arrived in Los Angeles in the sixties). I made it a point to walk up and down those stairs. It's located at 2108 Laurel Canyon Blvd if anyone else wants to visit. It's your typical small time grocery store; I bought a toothbrush (which I call my Laurel Canyon toothbrush lol) and some juice. What made them stand out to me is that they fix some really good sandwiches at the counter. HB, PLS, and Dreamer were with me. We brought back a sandwich for HH and VA. Everyone seemed pleased with their food. I recommend it!

The Lido Apartments (the lobby of which is where they shot the interior gatefold Hotel California photo (https://eaglesonlinecentral.com/images/hcinsert1.jpg) and back (https://eaglesonlinecentral.com/images/hcback.jpg)). The address for this one is 6500 Yucca Street. It's got bars on the windows and across the door; you have to have a code to get in, but I was not deterred. I waited around a bit for someone else to enter, then I slid in behind them. Frankly, as you probably guessed from the security measures, it's not in the best neighborhood and is run down. While I was waiting, homeless men were trudging by. All my girls had gone back home by that point (it was Saturday night), but I had my cousin and her wife with me so I wasn't alone. Otherwise, I wouldn't have stood out there for more than a minute.

Still, I'm glad I did. It was cool to see the lobby. It's changed since 1976, unsurprisingly, but a few things are the same - like those small windows on the second floor balcony that peek down on the lobby. I stood in one, looked down, and imagined what it would be like to be at that photo shoot and be the girl so many people thought was Anton LeVay. The lobby had a portrait of the Hotel California album hanging on the wall and a small sign saying "Welcome to the Hotel California" - those seemed to be the only visible nods to its claim to fame.

I took a few photos: Lobby 1 (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/losangeles2014/lido01.jpg) | Lobby 2 (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/losangeles2014/lido03.jpg) | Looking down on lobby from second floor balcony (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/losangeles2014/lido02.jpg) | Hotel California portrait hanging in lobby (http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/losangeles2014/lidohcpainting.jpg)

Two more Eagles-related sights checked off the list!

Nancy, that is so cool! I can really picture the HC photos when I look at your pics. I thought that I had read that that building no longer existed. I'm glad to see that it actually has survived.

Soda, that is so cool that you got to go inside and take those pictures! Thanks for sharing them with us! I wish you would have stood in one of the balcony windows for a picture too! And it doesn't look bad at all inside.

I'd definitely add these places to my list too.

That is very cool, Soda. I definitely would've like to have seen that. The lobby doesn't look as seedy as it did at the time of album photoshoot, that's for sure.

And FWIW - I definitely think this thread could go in the Eagles forum.

With all these newly added Eagles related sights we need to plan a longer trip! I believe that will be my new project - doing an Eagles related sights itinerary.

After almost five years, I've decided to move this thread to the Eagles forum. It's never to late to reorganize. ;)

We'd have to look for the rock walls as all the plants and cacti are long gone. of course, if there are a lot of rocks that look alike, that could be a problem. lol

haha yes...there are LOTS of rocks in Joshua Tree NP that all look very similar. We would have to have some kind of hint from them to help locate the spot. I bet they don't even remember exactly where it was, unless it was a particular spot they had frequented.

I have been meaning to post this but kept forgetting. I don't know if someone else has posted this book or not but just in case. I purchased this book for Eagles and Fleetwood Mac sites but have ended up reading the whole book - so interesting and full of information - "650 great music locations". It is "Rock Atlas USA" by David Roberts. Tons of photos too!
There is also a "Rock Atlas UK & Ireland" edition.

Soda, congrats to you for braving the Lido! I was determined to see it on my recent visit to SoCal, but all I got was an exterior shot. Let's just say the clientele is extremely off-putting.

I did manage to hit Lucy's El Adobe, and enjoyed it. The quesadilla was fine, but the autograph wall is the real draw: it's like a who's who of 70s L.A. rock, including Linda, Jackson and JD.

That second photo from the top that says "all of us"........never seen it before! And Randy and Tim are both in it!

That "all of us" is very cool. That's the only non RnRHoF photo with all 7 members that I've seen! Joe definitely looks like he's wearing pajamas for pants. (Typical for him). I almost didn't recognize Glenn, with that baseball hat on(at least I think he's wearing a hat).

California is on my list of places to visit, but it'll probably be several years before I'll get the chance to.

It would have been the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. What else could it have been? I have to say I am very surprised that photo has never surfaced before.

Thank you for the kind words. I'm sure that photo has popped up somewhere before, I just can't remember where.

Don't hate me Frey girls, but there are two other Glenn solo autographs on the wall that I didn't photograph. They were b&w stock publicity photos that get distributed to media, if it's any consolation. Looked to be from the 1980s.

OT: the autograph that made my jaw hit the floor was the late Arthur Lee (of Love) on a photo of him with Jimi Hendrix. I doubt if anyone working at Lucy's knows the value and rarity of what they have on that wall. There's even a gold record by Dolly Parton.

Indeed I did, thanks NOLA. I was only in Eagles (and Beach Boys and Doors) country for a few days, the rest of the time was spent in sequoia, hot springs and redwoods country. It sure is a beautiful place.

Incidentally, one can see the Forum on the landing approach to LAX. It's such a distinctive building - and has such a massive parking lot - there's no missing it. I would've loved to have seen it when it looked like this:

I gotta agree NMB - besides it's just purty!

Seriously though, I sure hope they have that roof stored somewhere so they can use it again in the event that there are future shows there!
