Hey guys, it might give folks more time to enjoy the photos if you posted a bit fewer of them per day - I don't know if you noticed, but 5 pages of photos were posted yesterday alone. I just think it might be better for everyone if you maybe limited it to, say, five images a day instead? Just to give us all time to soak up how gorgeous each one is. :)

I'm a bit surprised at your Plant rankings. For me Now & Zen is first & Fate Of Nations second. You should check out Dreamland & Band Of Joy. I consider Raising Sand overrated. I guess I'm also surprised you rank Presence so high.

I heard Pictures at Eleven first as a six year old in late 1982 and loved it immediately and also Robert having Phil Collins and the late Cozy Powell on drums sealed the deal (two of my all time favorite drummers, and I'm a drummer myself and Phil Collins is my favorite prog rock drummer of all time).

If you want to hear Allison Krauss singing some songs by herself, then by all means. It is not the 'duets' album that it was loudly proclaimed to be, unlike Knopfler/Harris' All The Roadrunning, which is a true duets album.

Thanks, EL, yes, I did have fun. It's 8.50 on Friday morning, OM13. Here is the setlist:

Tin Pan Valley
Another Tribe

Friends
Spoonful
Black Dog
Going To California
The Enchanter
What Is & What Should Never Be
Heartbreaker
Four Sticks
Funny In My Mind (I Believe I'm Fixin' To Die)

Whole Lotta Love

Bron Y Aur Stomp
Rock & Roll
I had thought there were more solo songs than that. There are a couple from Mighty Rearranger & one from Dreamland. Spoonful was the big surprise as I knew Cream's version.

He was wearing a simple black T shirt & blue jeans. His hair varied. At the start he had part of it tied back in a bunch. Then it was all back in a ponytail. Near the end it was loose. He didn't look as haggard as I was expecting.

I didn't know any of the band members but a guy from Gambia in West Africa called Juldeh Camara on talking drum & African instruments rititi (violin) & kologo (banjo) added a tribal feel to some songs.

Black Dog in particular is very different from the original, much like the jazz Heat Is On. It was awesome. To have it immediately followed by Going To California was wonderful but I do think Robert finds some of those lyrics a bit naive. Four Sticks, which is my least favourite track from IV, rocked, as did Bron Y Aur Stomp. I thought Rock & Roll fell a bit flat. The Enchanter from Mighty Rearranger was the standout solo track.

He has such a huge catalogue that he can't please everybody & while this was not in the same league as the show he did with Jimmy Page back in 1995, it was a great experience.

Going To California, What Is And What Should Never Be, Bron Y Aur Stomp? I would of died and gone to heaven!!! Wonderful!!

I'm also surprised at the ratio of solo and Zep songs. I would of thought you'd get more solo than that but I wouldn't of complained either. As much as I do enjoy his solo stuff, I much prefer my Zeppelin music.

Did you manage any pictures? I know what you mean by "haggard"-he is showing some wear and tear for sure but still all good!

Thanks for the review. I was sure thinking about you and this. I envy you--this must of been another awesome concert experience for you. You've had a few lately. ;)

Fp, so glad you enjoyed the show!

I've just purchased my first LZ cds ever! I got III and IV. I really just got III because it had Immigrant Song on it. Maybe I will like the rest too, but don't know them. IV because I do know all of the songs on it.

Really? WOW!! I cannot wait to hear your impressions of them. I really hope you enjoy them. In my opinion, the deep tracks are in most cases better than the hits in Zeppelin's case. I know I've said a thousand times here, but this is seriously the only band I don't skip a track on on any of their albums.

Please come back and let us know what you think!

Nice!!! My favorite is IV.... I'm not into a lot of the folk-y side of LZ, but their rockin side is perfect.

Rock And Roll, Black Dog, Misty Mountain Hop, etc.

Well, it's not like I'd never heard any of their music because I have on the radio. But I never liked them back in the day. Of course, shallow person that I am, I'd never seen what they looked like either! I might have liked them better back then if I had! Willie, I think I found that out here from you! :hilarious: Since I got a dvd a few years ago I have grown to like their music more. I love Kashmir and pretty much everything on IV already. Just didn't own it!

Zep III--- Since I've Been Loving You, That's The Way (OMG!), and of course, my all time fave Zep tune Immigrant Song.

Zep IV- Everything!!! :hilarious: My second fave Zep song, Going To California. Also love The Battle Of Evermore and When The Levee Breaks.

Brooke---- GET THEM ALLLLLLLL!!! There's only 10 studio albums and then add the BBC Sessions, etc..... You will not be disappointed! I guarantee it!

Sorry--- hate to be a nag but I'm just so passionate about their music. (I know that surprises all of you). :hilarious:

I know you're too young to remember them back when, but whenever I hear someone your age say that, it not only makes me extremely happy but it also makes me a bit sad that you weren't able to be a fan of theirs forever. This is one of those bands that has always been and will always be LARGER THAN LIFE. Know what I mean?

No photos. I had quite a good seat in about the 14th row but it was hopeless for photos. I did get a Look at one point, though, I'm sure of it. I love it when that happens.

I do like the solo stuff a lot. It's obvious that he considers Mighty Rearranger to be among his best work because Band Of Joy & Raising Sand were ignored. I suppose I would have liked something like Big Log or 29 Palms but you can't have everything.

Brooke, as far as I am concerned IV is one of the Top 10 greatest albums ever made. In fact it is probably my third favourite after Revolver & Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Also the folk side is just as important as the rock side. That was what made them truly great unlike other hard rock bands because they were versatile. You should get Physical Graffiti as well, because that is their second greatest album.

There are those out there that hate him and that became blatantly obvious to me several months ago when a friend on FB unfriended my because of the pictures and videos I post of Jimmy. She was a fellow Cars music fan and quite into the same music as me but swears she has reason to hate Jimmy. I won't go into the details, which she sent me a long FB message about things he did to a friend and her, etc.... I tried to explain to her, nicely, that I don't really know her no more than I know Jimmy himself. In fact, he's been a part of my life in a way since youth and I won't not be a fan of his because of something a virtual stranger tells me he did. Know what I mean. Sad but oh well. Maybe I haven't researched him enough (but trust me I've researched him quite a bit) but I've really never heard any truly bad stories about Jimmy. In the videos I've seen he comes across nice. He might be a bit eccentric sometimes but I think most guitar players are (myself included lol). :D

To me no one had better stage presence (for a guitarist) than Jimmy. He truly became a larger than life character and didn't need platform boots, makeup, etc to do so. He had a swagger like none other. I just watched Celebration Day last night and he's still that way.

I've read bunches and bunches about him also. Yes, I know all about the occult stuff but according to him, a lot of it's been blown out of proportion.

What she told me is pretty scandalous and has nothing to do with the occult thing. But like I said, how do I know if it's true or a figment of someone's imagination? I don't actually know anyone that was involved. I truly believe when she sent me that FB message she figured I'd say how awful that was and there was no way I could be his fan any longer and when that didn't happen, she unfriended me. I sent her a message asking why and she told me it sickened her to see my videos and pics of him on FB after what he had done and after she told me. The fact is, when I received her first FB message, I actually quit posting so much because I didn't want to offend her. Needless to say, I'm back to posting as much as I want again. It is MY FB page, after all.

That's pretty tough, Willie. I feel bad that she unfriended you over it, but the fact is that you can't possibly know what happened. One person's account of an event (true or not) is not going to completely change your mind about a musician you've loved for years. None of the guys we love are angels, but it's unfair to expect you to stop posting music or pictures of Jimmy because she has a personal problem with him. I'm glad that you don't seem to be too upset by it. It's obviously her issue.

I forgot to mention here that my daughter went to see Robert in Chicago Friday night. He performed at the Taste Of Chicago. Said it was a surreal experience for her seeing one of her idols like that.

She has now crossed off 3 of the 4 on her bucket list, Eagles, Bob Dylan, Robert Plant and the only one left she HAS to see in her life time is Neil Young. I wonder where she got her musical influences. ;) Hard to believe she's only 20 because she's wise beyond her years, musically.

I so envy you!! I was a bit young for Zep when they were in the height of their career so never got the chance. I can't even imagine what it would be like to see Jimmy Page live. Awesome!! Any little tidbits you remember?

I was only 14 at the time and I went with my older brother and his girlfriend. The one song that sticks out in my mind is Whole Lotta Love. In the song when they sing wanta Whole Lotta Love and then Jimmy Page does his zzzzzz (I don't know how else to describe it) the way his hands moved on that guitar was stunning. Like I said I was only 14 but even then I could appreciate what an amazing guitar player he was. When Houses of the Holy came out I wore that record out. John Bonham could play the drums.

I absolutely love watching Jimmy in Whole Lotta Love- watching his hand movements while playing the theremin- AWESOME!!! And watching him during The Ocean as he "directs" during it- OMG!!! I could go on & on... He's the most amazing man in Rock & Roll, in my opinion.

I just saw on the news that a band named Spirit...is claiming Led Zeppelin stole the opening riff to Stairway to Heaven from them...really?

WalshFan88
05-19-2014, 07:24 PM
Yup.... It happens all the time. Just like Jethro Tull said the Eagles stole the opening riff to HC from one of their songs.

You can only write a riff so many times before similarities and parts of it are used again.

I've never heard of Spirit. To me it sounds like a case of them wanting/needing public attention. Attention whoring as they call it...

If they are the same Spirit I know, they had a famous guitarist called Randy California. They were successful in the early 70s.

Just preordered IV and HOTH on Deluxe CD.... I was thrilled with the remasters of I, II, and III on Deluxe CD. I hope he does Physical Graffiti at some point.

---

Now for my LZ rant......Robert Plant fans beware!

Is anyone else sick of Robert bashing Jimmy in every freaking interview he does? First he gets all pissy at the thought of a reunion, then states he prefers his current music. He's playing food/wine festivals for god's sake! That's not LZ! Then he tells Jimmy he needs a hobby, then says he needs to do his own music and wants to see if he can put out some new solo music (which would be nice, but Robert was being condescending). Then he gets mad about the LZ remasters......Sorry Robert, but while you are bluegrassing it up and doing half-baked LZ covers in your band at wine cellars, Jimmy is keeping the LZ spirit alive. Maybe you can't sing that stuff anymore. That's fine, but just own up to it and say that instead of saying you prefer your current stuff. Thank god for Jimmy Page doing these remasters and giving the fans what they want. You couldn't pay me to see Plant in a solo show. It's so watered down. Now Jimmy and the Foo Fighters and the Crowes is AMAZING and I hope he does more of that.

It just annoys me how Robert keeps slamming Jimmy and every time I read Ultimate Classic Rock, it's a new article on Robert saying something about Jimmy.

I agree with you to some extent, but unlike you I have seen Robert live & about half of the show is taken up with Zeppelin songs, rearranged though some of them are. He can sing those songs but it is a fact he does prefer his recent material. I applaud him for at least taking a few risks, something Page apparentley will never do. At least he believes in keeping things fresh even if the newer material doesn't measure up to Zeppelin (only a very small handful of his solo work can even be mentioned in the same breath as Zeppelin, unfortunately).

As for the type of shows he plays, he will play wherever he can get work. I should remind you that the Eagles will be playing at a winery in Australia next year, and they have played these type of festivals as well (the Hopi Farm Festival in Kent a couple of years ago springs to mind).

You can't bring back Led Zeppelin & it's best to keep it that way. The older I get the more I realise how great they were & if Plant doesn't want to go through the motions I don't see why he should.

I'm not interested in the remasters. I think it's time Page moved on as well.

WalshFan88
09-21-2014, 10:47 PM
I just don't feel like Page is stuck in the past. He's simply trying to keep the vibe and music alive and rightly so. If Robert doesn't want to tour thats fine but I just don't like new music from most classic rockers. I prefer 9 times out of 10 the 70s material. I feel like Robert is being very unfair to Jimmy and I don't think that is very nice. There is nothing wrong with nostalgia and it gets a bad rap. I just prefer the music from that time period. If he thinks his new music is better than the music he made in Led Zeppelin, then he and I have wildly different views on what constitutes "better music".

It's just like he won't stop making comments towards Page. It gets old, much like Gene Simmons won't stop running his mouth, or Ace Frehley bashing Tommy Thayer.

No, there is nothing wrong with nostalgia. Neither is there anything wrong with trying to come to terms with a solo artist's attempt to reevaluate himself. I have every one of Plant's solo albums. Have you heard any of them?

Seriously, you can't just stop your ears just because a band no longer exists. If this were the case, I wouldn't have any of Mark Knopfler's albums, some of which contain songs that are superior to a lot of what he did with Dire Straits. While it's true that Plant's work does not, with the possible exception of Big Log, it's wrong to dismiss it because it's 'new' and he's a 'classic rocker'. Would you have preferred Don Henley not to have made any solo albums?

With this attitude you would have no time for songs like Dirty Laundry.

I don't hate all solo music... I just meant new music in recent years and was referring to his bluegrass album...

I consider Dirty Laundry a classic rock song. But when I hear new music from old bands I love I generally find it doesn't hold up to their earlier material.

All other aspects aside, I disapprove of band members bashing each other in the press, period. It's quite tacky. For that reason alone, I wish Plant would give it a rest.

bluefeather
09-22-2014, 09:30 AM
I agree that band members(or ex) insulting each other in the press is simply childish and idiotic behavior but I do think Jimmy should move on. Some new music from him would be interesting. I respect Plant for constantly reinventing himself even when obviously his new material can't compare to his work with Zep. He gave his everything to the band(including losing his son and exhausting his marriage) and he doesn't owe anything to anybody aside from basic good manners when talking about an old friend. It's better to reserve the memory of Zep as it is and not try to resuscitate a body long gone IMO. It was so long a go the're all different people now and I think it's a bit silly to try bringing back the "monster" in all its glory because the spirit and the attitude(allmighty, young and arrogant "overlords") that made the monster is GONE. At least Plant and Jones have grown up and from what I've read Jones is quite happy writing classical pieces and other stuff instead of ganging up on Plant with Jimmy about the reunion.
