I forced myself to listen to both mash-ups in their entirety as penance for supporting them alongside fanvids in another thread. But surely there are good ones out there....? And I guess it really isn't hurting anyone... well, except for the fact that my ears are currently bleeding.

They are adorable in those California Jam videos! The videos are like little time capsules, especially when you see all those folks in the audience in their 70s hippie glory. In addition to the performances, I love the brief footage of the Eagles coming in from the helicopter at the beginning of "James Dean" - Don with his "EAGLES" T-shirt (lucky 13 on the back), Glenn with his goofy hat (which thankfully was removed prior to performance). The guys seem excited to be there - lots of grins as they perform. These videos are great!

I like this video a lot, probably not for the same reason you do though! :hilarious: I like seeing all of those guitars and of course hearing the song. Glenn with a Fender Esquire (one-pickup version of a Telecaster), Joe with a Gibson Les Paul, and Don Felder with a Gibson Les Paul. Seeing Joe play slide close-up is very cool.

When you say 'the HFO version' I assume you mean the version with the Spanish sounding acoustic opening. They didn't even do that on the HFO tour. They did the full electric version. The only time they played the song that way was for the TV broadcast.

Why is it or maybe more importantly HOW is it that I can watch this video THOUSANDS of times and NOT ONCE get tired of it?! I play the darn video once a day at least. It makes me very happy to listen to this. It's my Prozac...my therapist...my happy "place". I would give anything to transport myself back to the Hotel California tour and see several concerts. That album means so much to me. I swear, I have this very video on my computer, my iPad, my smartphone, my iPod, EVERYWHERE. I can't escape from it. It's my favorite music video of all time and of course my favorite song of all time.

I just love this video. Walsh and Felder crack me up when they play their solos in this video. I miss that. I would LOVE to get more HC tour memorabilia. I have a songbook and the CD. I've heard they have a DVD in audio if it too but I haven't got it. I need to get the tour program too.I love that album. From the cover to the music to everything. It makes me smile talking about it.

Sigh..... :hilarious" That whole album is nothing but a masterpiece. Eagles at their finest IMO. I just can't escape it. I've watched this video more times than I can count. If I had a penny for every time I hit play - I'd be rich :D

Yeah Glenn is much more "involved" in tracks like New Kid In Town as far as the album goes. As far as this video goes, yes unfortunately he isn't shown much. He plays the 12 string acoustic capoed at the 2nd fret. I do believe he is playing a Martin guitar in this video. He started using Takamine shortly thereafter. Just like how he plays a Martin in those early BBC vids of TIE, PEF, etc. He does the background strumming you hear in HC. Of course Felder did the intro pieces that continue throughout the song. And Walsh with the lead bit while Felder is playing that intro.

Well Austin - I'd agree with you about that being an amazing video. Unlike you, it's not possible for me to single out my favorite song ever. However, Hotel California ranks pretty high up there in my book as well. I'd also say that it is one of the best songs ever recorded, IMO. Again, I don't think I can pick a single "best" song, but this easily makes my Top 5 - it is the embodiment of a perfect song to me - great lyrics, great music, great vocals, great harmonies, great storyline, great guitar solos, and great arrangement. A truly amazing, socially relevant masterpiece that I also never tire of hearing!

I think for me it's probably easier because this song really impacted me and changed my life and made me a happier person. If I hadn't listened to HC that day, I don't think I would have ever played guitar or got out of the house or anything like that. I really have a lot of emotional sentiment for that song and album but it's definitely my favorite. But I think because of that fact that it really changed my life - I have more feelings for it than I do any other song.

That's the same way I feel, Brooke. I'm a little bit envious of someone like Austin that can remember and point to a single song that had such an impact on their life. It's great when music can change your life or have an impact like that and give inspiration. If it hadn't been for hearing that song at that time, there is no doubt in my mind that I would not have learned guitar or done anything. I would still be a depressed bored person. I have Hotel California and I just play it over and over. It's my ringtone on my cellular phone. It's the song I close my solo shows with and when I was in the Eagles tribute, we'd close our shows with it too.

Lyin' Eyes came out on this day in 1975. Here's a video of them doing it over 30 years later (good close-ups of Glenn on this and, unusually for this song, also of Don!) The only problems are that the constant zooming in and out can make you a bit motion sick, and the end is cut off. :(

It's so funny because I had that T- shirt that Randy & Joe are wearing in that video. It's from Criteria Recording Studio in Miami... That is where they recorded "Hotel California" album. It was a huge recording studio not far from Univ. of Miami.

Possibly my favorite live version of Already Gone. It's a tie between this and the Christchurch version when Glenn yells out the expletive right as the guitar solo starts because it's raining! :hilarious:

Needless to say, this is my favorite lineup for the Eagles. Glenn, Don, Randy, Felder, and Joe. Hotel California tour baby! :hilarious: That's the poster I have on my wall, those 5 guys. That's "Eagles" to me. What I would give to go back in time and see one of those shows... When they opened with Hotel California and had that background I'd scream and go crazy!!!

FWIW my favorite Eagles DVDs are Houston '77, Christchurch, and HFO. Christchurch is probably my favorite but the HC era bootlegs are really special to me.

I saw this video has been recently uploaded. I love this one and it really showcases Frey's lead playing as he doesn't do that much since the other two have always done that and he provides rhythm (he's the Keith Richards of the Eagles) but plays lead on occasion on songs like this, Witchy Woman, Already Gone, etc.

Sorry, but Austin is correct. Keith plays rhythm guitar. He is one of the most distinctive rhythm guitarists of all, but rhythm it is.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keith_Richards#Guitar_playing

See the 'Guitar playing' section.

And yes, Glenn only plays the first solo in GOI, but Austin was just commenting that he did a good job.

I read what it says there, in Wikipedia, but it says "interwoven lead & rhythm guitar" Go watch the videos, especially recent ones. Richards is playing lead guitar...No Question in my mind there. He is doing solos all over the place on the 2006 concert, Shine a Light.
Sorry, but I disagree with you both.

Oh & I also said Frey played great, as well. There was no intention to put down Glenn's playing on the GOI video. I was only commenting that solos were played by the others as well.

I guess this is why it's confusing. They feel that the separation of lead and rhythm guitar is 'unnatural'. Cut and paste from the Stones official website:

Keith Richards grew up fascinated by guitars and - when rock 'n' roll emerged as a new musical expression in his early teens - with the American Blues genre. A chance meeting with infant school associate Mick Jagger on the train station at Dartford revealed a shared interest in this music, which led to friendship and then to the formation of The Rolling Stones with Brian Jones and Ian Stewart.
The rest is quite literally history. A lot of that history emanates from Keith Richards’ extraordinary ability to develop rhythm and harmony through his guitar, often in collaboration with another player – variously Brian Jones, Mick Taylor and Ronnie Wood.
This technique of double play – which Keith refers to as ‘the ancient art of weaving’ – is based on the principle that the separation of lead and rhythm guitar play is unnatural. Those ‘roles’, commonly adopted in two guitar bands, divide and separate the harmony and structural chords from the melody lines between the two players.
For Keith, this is absurd: 'You don’t go into a guitar shop and ask to buy a lead guitar or a rhythm guitar – it’s a guitar.’ It was this, as much as anything else, that led to a breakdown in communication between Keith and Mick Taylor in the mid-seventies: ‘If you want to fuck around with the top three strings, fine, but my guitar’s got six strings and they’re all there for a reason’.
The arrival of Ronnie Wood in his wake, a guitarist more at home with playing song lines and harmonies with equal enthusiasm and facility, restored the weaving of The Rolling Stones sound.

Topkat
01-14-2012, 08:36 PM
Thanks for posting that. I guess that explains the question of who plays "lead" & 'rhythm" as they seem to each play both. I guess it's not that confusing.

It just seems that lately Richards has been doing some more solos, which is why I didn't see him as the rhythm guitarist.
Whatever works for them is what's important. They've only been around for 50 years, so they are doing something right!

The reason Richards is always billed as the rhythm guitarist is because he wrote and played all of those classic riffs. Brown Sugar, Honky Tonk Women, Jumpin' Jack Flash, Satisfaction, etc. Those innovative rhythm parts in an Open G tuning are what make Keith so unique and innovative. Keith DOES play lead guitar, but he has always been the rhythm guitarist. Dating back to the first duo, Brian Jones always played the bulk of the leads, same with Mick Taylor (my personal fav lead for the Stones) and Ron Wood. They do play both, but Keith mainly plays all of the rhythms. All of those classic Stones intros are Keith and Keith alone. He did play lead famously on Sympathy For The Devil, but not on any of the other famous Stones tunes. Honky Tonk Women, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Brown Sugar, etc on the lead was all Mick Taylor. The leads in Start Me Up, Under My Thumb, Beast Of Burden, etc was all Ron Wood.

Keith does play some lead live, but he's always been the rhythm guitarist and always had that title. You can ask any guitar guru that and they will tell you he's probably the best if not one of the best rhythm players of all time. Truly a disciple of Chuck Berry. But to say he's the main lead player of the Stones is inaccurate. He does most of the rhythm, Ron does most of the lead, but they DO play both. But Keef is known for being a riffmaster. Every "Best Rhythm Guitarist" list has Keef at the top of the list if not number one.

Some quotes:

Lineup: Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica, later some guitar); Brian Jones (lead guitar, anything he could get his hands on); Keith Richards (rhythm guitar, vocals, some bass); Charlie Watts (drums); Bill Wyman (bass). Jones died, replaced by Mick Taylor (lead guitar, some bass), 1969. Taylor quit, replaced by Ron Wood (lead guitar, vocals, some bass) of the Faces, 1975. Ian Stewart (piano) appears sporadically from the very beginning. In the Taylor period, Bobby Keys (sax), Jim Price (trumpet, trombone), Nicky Hopkins (piano), and Jimmy Miller (producer, some percussion, some drums) appear frequently.

http://www.warr.org/stones.html

Best known for his highly-skilled rhythm guitar playing, musician Keith Richards has been a legendary supporting force in rock music.

I'm not a Stones expert, but I always thought Keith was considered the band's rhythm guitarist as well, even though he does play some leads at times. I don't know anything about the technical aspects of playing, but I agree if you ask around. most people that are familiar with the band would say he's the rhythm guitarist. That is probably because he plays the rhythm parts on the recorded studio versions of many of their songs. In live concerts, there is more room for improvisations so Keith may play more leads. Just as Glenn is considered the Eagles' rhythm guitarist, but that doesn't preclude him from playing lead on some songs.

I was noticing that in this show, Don Felder has a different guitar for each song. I swear he played at least 15-20 guitars. I don't know that I ever noticed that before. Joe played a lot of different guitars also, but some he used more than once. It was just unbelievable. Did he always do that??

Wasn't quite sure where to put this but it can always be moved if necessary. Just wanted to give everyone a link to some really great audio clips (in case you aren't aware). Don't know why I've never thought to put it out there before.

Anyway, Wolfgang's Vault has a huge variety of audio of concerts and other live shows, both old and new. There is some really great Poco along with a little Henley and Walsh. There is also a video vault on the website. If you love all sorts of music, it's a great site to check out. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

Love this! It is of course from the Christchurch DVD.

One of the last times Glenn played his original solo live... :( My favorite Glenn lead/solo. I'm not too keen on the improvised solos on F1 - I prefer the originals - they were so great.

Yeah, it's a bummer to wait the whole show for a song that never gets played. It happened to the guy behind me at one show. He kept saying "I can't wait to hear 'New Kid in Town.'" I told him that they wouldn't play it, but he insisted they would because it was such a big hit and that they were no doubt saving it for the encore. He didn't listen to me and when the show ended, kept saying "I can't believe they didn't play 'New Kid in Town.'"

I was in Walmart yesterday & was surprised to see a DVD of the Eagles entitled "One of These Nights". I forget exactly what picture of them was on the cover, but it wasn't from a OOTN photo session nor did it have any part ofthe OOTN cover on it. On further inspection I discovered that it was none other than the Christchurch video! Don will NOT be pleased!

They also had another one which said Eagles UK 1993 & USA 1994 (or something to that effect). Pictures on the cover were from the Don Kirshner's Rock Concert 1994 show. I assume that the UK part was at least BBC '73. There were a long list of songs & it seemed like there were more songs than they would have played at both of these performances combined. I was in a big hurray & didn't have time to look more closely to see all that was on it & try to figure out what other performances might be included.

I wondered, especially about Christchurch, whether it would be any better quality that the bootleg that I have seen? However, judging from past experiences, I think that it would be exactly the same video.

Those aren't the first that I have seen there. There was one called Eagles California Nights with a 70's picture of the band on the cover, which was a complilation of Glenn & Don interviews from their "14 year vacation". Very misleading. I have also seen a "cheesy" documentary in a greatest albums type series where the commentators pronounce Glenn's name "Fray" all but one time.

I really don't think a place like Walmart would be selling stuff without permission. I mean, how could they think they could get away with it? Maybe it was part of the deal they made when they sold LROOE....Is that possible? I really can't see them doing something that stupid! They must have permission.

Come to think of it, I think over Christmas, I think I saw some Eagles videos in Best Buy... I don't remember which ones, I think ones I haven't seen before.
I mean the profit margin on this stuff cannot possibly be worth a lawsuit with them...They would have to be nuts!

Here is the setlist that VAisFEL posted for the Las Vegas show last November. This show was about two hours long, and my guess is that the setlist for the Atlanta shows will be very similar. They may make a few changes, but I'd be very surprised if there are any big changes until they officially roll out the 40th Anniversary Tour.

Seven Bridges Road
How Long
Take It To The Limit
Hotel California
Peaceful Easy Feeling
Witchy Woman
Lyin’ Eyes
I Can’t Tell You Why
Walk Away
Boys of Summer
In The City
Long Run
Life’s Been Good
Dirty Laundry
Funk 49
All She Wants To Do Is Dance
Heartache Tonight
Life In The Fastlane
---encore---
Take It Easy
Rocky Mountain Way
Desperado

Now as far as those DVD's at Walmart, I'm not sure what the deal is with those with regard to being legal. These same DVD's have been available through Amazon for quite a while now, so I'm guessing there is a loophole. It may be that they are being distributed and sold outside of the U.S. so maybe that isn't illegal.

Best advice I can give is go with an open mind - they have so many great songs that you will LOVE the show, even if your favourites aren't performed, or its not in the order you would have chosen.

And I think sending out positive vibes can only help :)

Thank you, Dreamer, I'd just found the document I typed that into and was getting ready to copy and paste it here and to my surprise it was already here! Great minds and all that.

It might be slightly different but like Dreamer said, it's doubtful it'll change greatly. I imagine that what they do for Atlanta, Vegas, and New Orleans will be what they do in South Africa and Dubai to eliminate need for rehearsals. I hope we're able to find reviews for the shows in S.A. that give a setlist.

I know - I love their Calfornia Jam performances too. I wonder if they were nervous, because as you said, they sure don't look like they were. I can't wrap my little brain around standing up and performing in front of even 2,000 people now. Why does Henley take the YT vids off, is it because he thinks it's copyright infringement?

See, the thing here is: they are getting FREE promotion, FREE publicity and I'm amazed why some musicians can't see it that way. It's the music COMPANIES he nees to worry about, piracy issues and all of that.

If fans post vids of them singing it's purely for their benefit..okay, and kudos for the poster but I wonder how many more records have been sold because of it.

For example: I went out and bought F1 Tour DVD based on the vid of ITYW from it. And HFO DVD two days ago based on the YT clip of LWKUA from it.

If that isn't proof of the pudding I don't know what is

This song and Alan Jackson's 'Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)' get to me every time I hear them. Besides the lyrics that really hit home with me, the melody and arrangement of the song is powerful.
