I love How Long, also. Glenn looks like he's having such a good time in that video! Plus, it's a great song.

BBF just cracks me up. I like the song. They're the party band AND "the help." And hiring Joe and his chimp as your security team -- LOLOLOLOL!!! Especially a pickpocket chimp. And the final scene is fabulous all by itself. It's perfect for the song, and for a group of guys who aren't keeping the bathtubs full of Budweiser in the hotel room anymore.

I loved the "60 Minutes" interview where Tim is talking about what he does after a show nowadays, and he said something like he goes to his room, takes a bath and "visits a book friend." Awesome.

Aw. Me too, Tim!

And count me among those who likes the song as well as the video.

I have a couple of friends who think the guy passed out on the couch in the BBF video looks like Don Felder......

This is a video clip of “Funk 49” as performed by the band at the L.A. Forum opening night in 2014. Not only is it nice quality footage but it starts off with Glenn and Joe playfully trading off guitar licks. Did they do this at every show on the tour? They seemed to be having fun.

Just saw that video that you linked to, Delilah. And to answer your question ... Yes - they had been doing this little routine for quite a while. IIRC, I believe they started doing it on the Long Road Out of Eden tour. They would switch it up and improvise a little each show, but they always did some variation of that intro. It was always one of those little things I always enjoyed and looked forward to whenever I went to a show.

Thank you for answering my question, Dreamer. It sounds like it would have been a fun thing to see live.

No problem, Delilah. Yep - It's those kind of fun little moments that made the shows so special for me.

I absolutely loved that little routine they did beforehand. Sometimes it was longer than at other times; it wasn't always exactly the same. Just one of many little injections of personality on top of the fantastic music that made it an Eagles show even more worthwhile!

Yes, that was a very funny and cool moment during that song. They did it for the HOTE show I saw, and I'm pretty sure on the LROOE show I saw too.

Thanks Pippin, this is a cool interview. I love hearing from Deacon and Timothy, and that Don is still writing songs, even if they’re in his head, LOL.

Wow, how much Deacon looks like his Dad! That hair, smile, 'stache, etc., but yet, I can see Cindy too!

It just makes me sad to see him and them.

And Don says Glenn is not replaceable and they don't pretend to be the same band, but yet, they are selling it as the Eagles. If only they would have used a different name......:nope: can't like it even a little.

Thanks for the link, pippin. And Brooke, of course, I was thinking the same thing, but I'll take my comments over to the anti-3.0 thread so I don't bring this one down.

However, on a positive note, I was interested in watching it to see Deacon interacting with the others. He seems comfortable and relaxed with them despite the age difference. Seems like he has his dad's sense of humor. I also thought it was interesting that Tim said the first time they met with Deacon about joining the band that they met in Glenn's recording studio.

It's just okay, to me---if that. He's too flashy for such a simple song. I don't like the tone of his voice. He's trying too hard to have an "accent" and is too nasily.
So I guess, no, I don't like it.

This is going to show my bias but:

The thing that got me was the fact Blake and Gyth weren't playing the right chords at the right time, and they completely missed two chords altogether, lol. It was obvious it wasn't going through the PA. I mean they played G, D, and C chords sure but not only were they at the wrong time, they left out Am and Em. It drove me nuts watching it live. I realize Take It Easy may seem like a song that you need to play guitar while you sing because Glenn Frey did it, but OMG. It's like just put the guitars down and sing the damn thing and let the house band play it. I realize it happens all the time with performers and the show is called The Voice, but as a guitarist it bothers me to see it get used as a prop or a attention getter/accessory like a watch or sunglasses. It brought nothing to the performance. And I'm well aware I'm the only one who cares, lol. I've never liked Don Henley playing guitar live in the Eagles, but at least he has some basic skills and knows basic chords to the songs and when they are to be played and where, and when he doesn't know, he doesn't pretend he's still playing, he'll hold the mic or clap or do something else. These guys were comfortable looking like they were playing when it fact they weren't playing the song and had no clue.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc9CjnIzutU&t=2248s Philadelphia, 2003 concert. Poster starts it where Glenn plays piano while singing "Take it to the Limit", but you can go back to the beginning. This is from the first half of the show. Some looks pretty professional, some not. It's often blurry, but still interesting as I skimmed through.

What I wouldn't give for some Long Run era high quality video footage. Heck, even standard definition if it's a full show.

Such an underrated yet trying period of time for the band. The record, the tour, all of it. I love it all. Probably my favorite Eagles lineup, even despite HC being my favorite record, The Long Run is 2nd up. There is an element to this period that while it had filler, a lot of it sounds like a lot of the industrial comedy movies I love. Sounds like it would belong on Beverly Hills Cop or Fletch or something like that. I love those movies and those soundtracks and something like Teenage Jail or would just fit it so well. That's why I love Bob Seger's "Shakedown" and all of Glenn's big hits. And Kenny Loggins, etc. Same kind of urban development vibes, for lack of a better word - lol. It just screams 80s to me, and not so much the Sunset Strip stuff although I love that so much, more of the poppier side of the 80s and more cities and skyscrapers. It's funny to think of that stuff like that... I think the 80s were so cool. To see them dogged on especially as a music era makes me sad. It's a time period I would have loved to lived through. One side of town you had Motley Crue and the other Debbie Gibson. I love it all though. I've always loved the pop infused things that most shun. Probably why I'm not known for love of deep tracks or lyrical depth.

Someone it sitting on that footage for sure. I cannot believe there isn’t any!!!! Jimmy Koplik (concert
promoter/presenter for CT...was part of Yale Bowl legendary concert)has been asked repeatedly about footage from the iconic Yale Bowl concert (pic on inside of Eagles live) and he says no recording was done. It’s maddening!!! This was a huge event and not one recording?? Aaarrrghh!

I hate the saying regarding the Eagles being a terrible rock band! I don’t get it and just come to terms with there are always haters out there. As far as the 80s there is highs and lows as any decade. The one thing that annoyed me was overproduction, synthesizers overused, synth drums, and seemed to be some unwritten law that you were required to have a sax solo  while all those things can work, the era, generally speaking of course, became a lil saturated. But being born in 76, I was a kid during that era and have fond memories and have quite an eclectic taste in music. Now 80s fashion is another thing......

See, I love synthesizers! :hilarious: And I like the production on a lot of that stuff. Again, poppier stuff doesn't bother me so much. I don't mind the glitz and glamour and I absolutely love me some glam metal and 80s pop and soundtrack music. And I love the excess of it all. How I wish I could have been on Sunset Strip in the mid 80s! To me that's part of what made the 80s so cool. The over the top nature of it is why I like it, not in spite of it. I think that's why I loved Don Henley's first two records, but The End Of The Innocence was a little too plain for me. I love Building The Perfect Beast. It just screams 80s to me and I love it.

One of my favorite musical bits of all time is the "Axel F" theme that Harold Faltermeyer did for Beverly Hills Cop.

Thanks so much, edwardd! I was at this concert and loved seeing little snippets of it. It was the hottest, sweatiest concert I have ever attended, but hands down the most fun one too!

I enjoyed the Yale Bowl footage too, even though it wasn't very clear. That concert was June 14, 1980 and though I wasn't at that one, I saw them 4 days later on June 18, 1980 here in Indianapolis.

A minor detail...I've never paid much attention to the instrument Glenn played on TIE in the 70's, but I recall Felder saying in his book that he encouraged Glenn to play an electric instead of acoustic on this song. But here Glenn is playing electric before Felder joined. Was this a one-off thing or did he often play electric on TIE before Felder joined? I was kind of surprised to see this, remembering Felder's comment.

I'm pretty sure he often did. Felder tends to get confused about such things. To be fair, though, I think he switched back and forth, and perhaps Felder told him he should stick to electric?

I wonder if Glenn's choice of acoustic or electric on TIE was based on the sound at the individual venue? I know when he started working with Takamine acoustics, he said that it was very difficult to get decent pickups on an acoustic guitar or wire one for sound. The Tak was one of the first acoustics with built-in electric pickups, if I remember the interview correctly. So it may have been if the sound was good, he used the acoustic and if not, then electric. But that's just a non-guitar player wondering out loud...

For the most part, Glenn played electric on "Take It Easy" when they were a quartet. He even continued playing electric once Felder joined, but I think once the band split up in 1980 or so, he switched to acoustic when he did solo shows and that continued once HFO was released. By then, they had a lot of other musicians on stage and he didn't need to fill up the sound so much.

And as a relevant side note, thank you for your humility. We don't always agree on here on different topics, and that's totally fine. But I appreciate you treating this as what it is, and not the cure for cancer or something like that. But rather just a rare video and not acting like a gatekeeper of sorts or someone who feels superior for having it and is being so generous as to let us take a sip from the golden fountain. ;)

Thank you for posting that scamp. I do have to say I disagree some of what they said. I would never call Glenn a high baritone (especially up to/including the HFO time period) and Don F. a low tenor. The others seem to be pretty on. I do have to say I agree with KF - Joe has a different/unusual voice and the songs he sings are perfect for his voice. And, like most singers, their voices have changed as they aged.

On this version of TIE from the RRHOF induction, I can clearly hear Bernie's guitar and vocal. Somehow on almost every other version that had been uploaded I couldn't hear anything that either Bernie or Randy played or sang.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OizpcqhliVs

The way Bernie plays the first solo and second solo is interesting; there are a lot of different licks from the recording, and of course, the recording didn't have a second solo.

I think Randy's mic may really have been turned off (unless a new recording surfaces) because I can't hear him at all here.

So Joe actually did use a double neck live on "In the City."

It's funny that only one fan they found even knew the names of some of the Eagles, apparently. I wonder what the results of a similar poll at any given Eagles concert today would be.

The concert cost $13, which is $42 adjusted for inflation.

Edward, I remember that there were some collectors on YouTube who kept making fun of you for posting footage. Not sure exactly what the deal there was, but this stuff is pretty cool to see. I keep hoping that live '70s footage or taped audio of "Peaceful Easy Feeling" with the Hotel California or Long Run lineup will surface. and to answer your question, they never performed peaceful easy feeling after Bernie left, although they began performing it only in 1996, which included Timothy, Joe , Felder, henley, and Glenn. Have you seen it?

WalshFan88
07-15-2021, 07:23 PM
I think PEF was done acoustically during the HFO period, at least once as on the HFO bootleg.

I think they really started performing it like the record after Steuart Smith, a capable country guitarist joined the band. While Joe could cop the Take It Easy solo, to try to imitate Bernie's countriest moment IMO, and have to either learn to use a B Bender or imitate one, was something Joe couldn't do and either Felder couldn't or was unwilling to do. Steuart doesn't use a B Bender either, but he does imitate one wonderfully as seen on F1 DVD or any Eagles show since SS joined. Steuart was closer to Bernie in style than Joe or Felder. Steuart was more versatile than Bernie in the rock genre, however. Then again, I'd argue Smith is the most versatile the Eagles have had. It makes sense that he's a session musician with a range of artists he's played on. Felder would be 2nd most versatile. Where as I feel Bernie is mostly country style and Joe being mostly rock style.

Eddie, I have seen about a minute of them performing it at Greensboro, but that's it. I've also heard tapes of them doing it live in 1996.

Felder did use a B bender on PEF, but I think he said he didn't like using it in his book. Most of the bender licks on the Millennium concert are fairly basic iirc.

I agree that Steuart is likely the most versatile, but I'd also like to hear Don's Chet Atkins style, his bluegrass flatpicking, and the nylon string jazz playing that he apparently did in Boston. I've felt that he was always good at playing arpeggiated stuff with lots of open strings, so it would be cool to see more of that.

I guess I wasn't aware of PEF being played electrically without Bernie or Steuart. I don't know that I knew about it being played on the Millenium show but now I see it was. I just figured they did it acoustically like they did at other shows right after HFO.

I also don't remember that about Felder's book and the bender but it's been many years since I've read it. He probably didn't like it because it would be unnatural for him. While he can clearly do the flamenco or the fingerpicking Chet Atkins thing, the "chicken picking" Telecaster style playing isn't in Felder's wheelhouse in the way it is for Steuart or Bernie. Felder used a Tele for Lyin' Eyes but even then it wasn't very country sounding to me anyway. I think Felder's version of country was more Chet Atkins/Duane Eddy Gretsch or archtop style older country music and not the twangy Telecaster sound that started with California country music of the 60s and the bender sound of Clarence White.

Sometimes I wonder if the Eagles ever did that song from the time Bernie left until 1980 because it's the only song that I've never heard any audio evidence of live from that era.

Joe used a double 6 string. He liked to use A tuning when playing slide. Double necks were common back then. It allowed two different tunings, bass and 6 string, and of course 12/6 string. Some were even teles instead of the usually strat. Today their is a guy making a double neck that is 6 string guitar and a 6 string electric banjo.

Correct - his name is Brian Nutter. He used to play with Keith Urban for many years until Danny Rader took over. He's the one doing the double neck 6 string guitar and "gango" (6 string banjo tuned like a guitar). A lot of Keith's music had Gango in it, so I think having to switch between that and a guitar is probably the impetus for him to build those.

Couldn't think of his name at the time. He does some really good work. Banjo's are coming back in country music.
Could you imagine Joe playing one. Maybe even slide banjo.
I actually have one. It's made by Dean and looks just like a strat with a big black circle in the middle almost like an Ernie Ball. Fun to play. A lot easier than a 5 string.

I don't remember which thread it was and who I was discussing with, but this person said that Felder probably came up with those ascending chords that lead to the chorus in NKIT. I said that those chords were probably already part of the initial composition. I was wrong as usual, they are not there when they're rehearsing the song. They go straight to the C sharp minor from the E major.

Scamp, I know you posted this video way back in September, but I would still like to say Thank You.
When the band was honored at the Kennedy Center, I didn't have cable, or satellite, or even rabbit ears, I had no way of watching them. And that drove me nuts, because I was able to see when Zeppelin got honored and that was pretty awesome. When I heard the Eagles were being honored, I threw my phone down and cried out in Nancy Kerrigan style "WHYYYY?!" (I do realize now that I may have been a tad bit over dramatic) And I don't know if they put those on DVD, so I thought I'd never be able to see it, ever.

And now because of you posting that video, I was finally able to watch it.

TITTL Houston 1976. Is that really Joe doing the highest harmony on "spend my life running round" and "can't seem to settle down?" At first, I thought it was Henley, but then I heard what sounded like his voice singing those lines above Glenn. If it's Joe, I'm surprised he can sing that high.

Well, of course, the top of my list are the videos known to exist that virtually no one has seen. I had high hopes that for the 50th anniversary we would see new releases. But, realistically, even the restoration of these and the showing on YouTube is surprising! Like you, WF, I found it hard to believe Don was approving of this. Maybe his kids or Deacon have swayed him. (Keep it up!)

WalshFan88
12-08-2022, 01:21 AM
Agreed. Definitely start with the rare vault stuff. But an updated HFO with the quality like that TIE video they posted would be sweet.

Actually I think F1 looks significantly better than HFO does on DVD, probably because it is like 10 years newer. HFO is kinda grainy on DVD, IMO. I've got bootlegs with better quality. But that's what video was like in 1994. Whatever process they did to that TIE video could be done to the whole thing and I'd easily buy the "same thing" again and get a new bluray release. Especially even more so if it's a 4K bluray.

Maybe Don will see the light.

I know you were being funny, but honestly that's the first thing I thought of too. Is Don doing ok? seems very unlike him to allow this. Which made me think of an article I read yesterday that said earlier this week, he bought a 24 million dollar house in Malibu for his son Will. And the article went on to mention that although his son will be living in California, Don is still living in Texas (Dallas, I believe).

I mean I'm sure he's physically okay, but it seems like someone has figuratively twisted his arm into doing this. I mean he hates Google, who owns YouTube. It seems so very not Don. Either his kids and Deacon have modernized him a bit (unlikely), or Irving and the real powers that be have told him that views = ad revenue and that is money to be made (likely). I doubt he's modernized - he recently chastised someone at an Eagles 3.0 concert for having a phone out recording only to find out he was wrong but it was a little too late to take back the public embarrassment and shame that person felt. I think Don has learned the money to be made with AdSense ad revenue on the "new" tube.

I was on you tube watching some Eagles videos and I discovered a site called "Reaction to the Eagles singing..........".
Anyway, it was interesting and quite honestly, shocking to see the number of young kids who had NEVER heard of the Eagles. Mostly Gen Z and Mills. who do those you tube sites and they are usually blown away by how amazing they sound. Also, and this was a surprise to me, they are shocked that a drummer is the lead singer on HC. I never found it shocking about drummers singing. Probably because due to watching all those Midnight Special and DK shows on tv back in the 70's. They also picked up on the "reggae" sound of HC, which I found interesting.
It was interesting to see their reaction to the numerous songs they posted on their site(all from the 60's & 70's). Anyhow, you all should check the site out when you get the chance. I think everyone would enjoy it.

NKIT - Thanks so much for calling attention to this. I would probably have never been aware of these YouTube channels otherwise. Anyway, I just spent over two hours listening to reactions on several different Eagles songs by different 'young' YouTubers and agree with you that it was totally entertaining. I would highly recommend everyone checking these out when you get some time. There are a bunch of 'reaction' videos, so I finally had to force myself to stop, but I'm definitely going to go back and watch some more of them I get a chance. As NKIT said, all you have to do is type "Reaction to the Eagles singing [song name]" in the search bar to find them. I started with Hotel California and watched two reactions by 1) Asia and BJ and 2) a young lady with the first name of Rebeka. Then, I typed in Take It Easy and listened to reactions by the same two commentators. I listened to a few others reactions on several other songs too before I forced myself off. Anyway, it was addictive so I have a lot more watching to do. :applause::applause::applause:

I have to confess that this "reaction" culture isn't my thing. 😅

WalshFan88
01-27-2023, 04:22 PM
I am torn on reaction videos.

I like the fact they are discovering this music and music like it. The fact there are young people doing that puts a smile on my face. I think that's awesome. I hope they genuinely like it and are the flag wavers of this stuff going into the next generation and after that and so on and so forth. We need that. This music is awesome. And I feel the same way about film, the arts, and even things like retro video games, vinyl records, VHS tapes, or other forms of what people call nostalgia. We need that stuff to live on.

But IMO there is something kind of self important or feeling the need to make your opinion on something known publicly, have it go viral, and then know that everyone knows how you feel on something and you've tied your 15 seconds of fame to someone else's famous work and all you contributed was "this is good, this is bad, etc" and because of the success of the thing you are reacting to, you are given attention/ad revenue money/etc you wouldn't have otherwise got without that famous work you are commenting on and featuring. To me it's like the people who film or livestream themselves doing charitable deeds like giving money to a homeless person or walking around Walmart and giving random people 100 dollars. Yes, those people greatly benefitted from you doing that regardless of your true motive, but you didn't do it IMO with the best of intentions AND you did it for one of two things for yourself - pats on the back telling you how great of a person you are because you are an insecure narcissist OR the views and the ad money or followers/comments/likes gained from having the video go viral. It's tacky. I've always felt people who fish for compliments and attention the most are the least deserving of either and those who shout from the rooftops about their charitable donations and make it public for all to see are the people who do it for the wrong reasons and honestly it's pretty lame. Ask yourself if you'd still do it if no one else ever knew about it and you would get 0 praise for doing it. If so, then do it! If not, work on your own self-esteem.

I'll get off my soapbox... :hilarious:

I'm not convinced that these "reactions" are real and heartfelt. I feel they're just entertainment. If these people actually start listening to the music they "like" in these videos, that IS great. But I'm afraid the songs are forgotten when the camera's on again and the next "reaction" awaits.

I agree NKIT. I think it is just made for entertainment and not really trying to show a real reaction to discovering something new. It's a very popular YouTube and TikTok trend/meme. I think of them as just being for clicks because people want to watch something featuring something popular and use that to get people to follow them.

Do we know why Glenn played less piano in later years? Did he play piano on Desperado at all since the "resumption"? It didn't sound that different with someone else playing the chords, but it felt different SEEING Glenn at the piano while Don sang. On The Last Resort he didn't play piano.

I always enjoyed watching Glenn play piano. ❤ My guess is, that with his bad arthritis, pressing the guitar strings was simply less painful than hitting the ivories. Taping his hands like he did, playing guitar no doubt hurt as well, but he soldiered on. With all the other guitarists on stage, it didn't seem necessary. But he must have loved it.😥
