View Full Version : What now?

Well everyone, this leg of the tour has drawn to a close. When they first announced these dates months and months ago, it felt like it would never get here. With no new dates announced yet it feels like we are in limbo so to speak. I'm sure the guys are all looking forward to chilling out at home for quite awhile with family. Then what?

And what becomes of us here that have all awaited every new picture, video and review after each and every concert? PEW will set in big time. We do have a new solo album for Tim coming in the fall supposedly and we still have the newness of Don's dvd & cd release but what else? We have all said we expect them to announce some new dates in the West for the fall but till then, whatever will we do to keep things fresh and keep ourselves entertained?

We need some new survivor games or we can always put Mike to work again on a new game to boggle the mind!

Am I the only one who feels as if I'm all of a sudden lost? So pathetic I am!

It's hard to go from a surge of new shows and their accompanying videos and reviews to only a few (or no) new things happening... but we'll always find something to talk about regarding our favorite band. We can jump off "This Day in Eagles History" a lot - we get good threads out of those events often. And perhaps it's time to start a Glenn video survivor!

Am I the only one who feels as if I'm all of a sudden lost? So pathetic I am!

I feel the same!
Just today the feeling is especially great, because last Thursday was my first concert. I must always remember what I last week at this time had made. And I am afraid that I would see they no more, than I think that they unfortunately not come for more concerts in the next years to Germany!

If you are pathetic, what am I? I've been feelilng the same way! What do we do while they are relaxing and taking it easy? I know they aren't done touring, but there aren't any dates to look forward too. I'm sad!

Heaven knows I spend WAY too much time thinking/daydreaming about the Eagles... heaven knows it's certainly not healthy! :fear: I scare myself sometimes with my passion (obession) for the Eagles. I am confident that they will post new tour dates soon.

I guess it hasn't hit me yet that they are taking a break and we will not be fed anymore videos and pictures for awhile. I feel blessed to love a band that is still going strong even into their sixties (valid, creative statesmen!) and look damn good doing it!

They will be back. We just have to be patient!

I suspect we're all freaking out over the thought that we don't know when we'll have more concerts/reviews/videos to pacify us. And there's going to be an overload of PEW all around the world. Personally, I am so grateful for The Border and all of you wonderful people who share my adoration for our guys. Don's new CD/DVD helps, as will as the anticipated new TBF release slated for this fall, while we eagerly wait for the announcement of western US concert dates and locations.

In the meantime we've got to stick together, hang tough and, to borrow Timmy's words -- Feed the Fire right here. Remember that "You Are Not Alone", we're all in "Fast Company" on The Border and we'll continue to "Take It To The Limit" in these threads.

I love all of you gals and guys for being here and bless they day I found you!

Y'all are cracking me up here! I'm thinking I must be slipping. I've had so much on my plate here lately that I'm still several weeks behind on even going through the concert thread pictures, videos, and reviews. I was hoping I would be able to catch up in the next few weeks and y'all are making me tired just thinking about all these new ideas. But, I was thinking just the other day that we should schedule another chat party soon. Anyway, with the awesome group of people we have on our board, I am sure that things will stay interesting around here to help us make it through these lean times.

I did, when he was a guest with the Little River Band, in 1988. It was not a 'proper' solo show, grateful though I was for it. He only sang two songs on his own - THIO and YBTTC. Everything else he either sang with LRB or they backed him up.

The band rarely frequents my neck of the woods (and never, ever solo), but I always found comfort knowing they were out there doing something. I always get nervous when they or Neil Young disappear for any length of time. I fear they'll pull a Bob Seger... an entirely justified concern, I believe. Though he did return eventually, long stretches of seclusion are agony for fans. One could argue that we should "get a life" but, you know, we could be junkies or drunks or general social terrors.

I suppose I ought to snip the ramble before it wanders off into the Dali territory of random association. Is your clock melting?

Granted, I have been super busy and haven't had much time to dwell on it, but I'm still going thru such withdrawls with nothing new to see every so often. Awww Willie, I understand how you feel. I think we are all doing a commendable job here on the board finding things to talk about and playing games to pass the time. This is the way I look at it; Glenn, Don, Timothy and Joe are all sixty plus in age and they have been playing a pretty grueling schedule for months and months. As hungry as I am for more tour dates, I am relieved for them that they are taking this time to kick back. I worry about their health and want them to be rested and in good shape. Just think about how it must have been on the board before LROOE was released! We'll get through it...together.

Yeah, we're keepin' busy! But it's understandable that you want more when you've become accustomed to it. Daily tour news is fun! At least we know this is only a hiatus and there still will be more to come.

PM's right, there have been downtimes before! However, I admit it wasn't so bad before LROOE was released in the sense that they were still doing shows - the end of the F1 tour in the spring of 2006, then a few solo shows in the summer like Glenn's "Prelude to Obscurity" dates, and by fall we had news of the album to keep up the frenzy.

While taking some time off now and then, the guys have been keepin' it goin' for pretty much a decade, starting with the Millennium shows in late 1999/2000! Amazing if you think about it.

Not to tread upon Pandora's box, but speaking of "easy money" what's with the astronomical ticket prices? Have they ever discussed the justification behind that? I know initially they claimed it an attempt to dissuade scalpers, but clearly that has proven ineffective. Don and Glenn seem to have money coming out their ears. Their progeny are set for not only life but multiple incarnations. Is it power? Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan; but, why not defer to the economy? Allow everyday people to attend? Even the little things - I purchased an Eagles shirt in September for $45, and a few months later the same size shirt with long sleeves and superior design at a George Strait concert for $20. (Be advised: Don't talk to me about Strait being inferior or we'll have to take this outside.) What's with the need to amass? Is this just me? Do I just not understand the mentality? And I acknowledge that they moved a double cd at $10/copy, but artists make essentially no money off of recording sales, anyway.

Simple capitalist economics: Charge as much as the market will bear for maximum profits. Only stop when supply starts exceeding demand and the cost of production starts exceeding the revenue obtained.

Perhaps the economy will bring prices down because if people simply can't afford to go, supply will indeed start exceeding demand.

There is a complication, though, thanks to the introduction if ILAA and TicketsNow. Even if supply exceeds demand for the regular-priced seats, the profit from the much-higher-priced prime tickets on TicketsNow and ILAA can counterbalance that and make the profit margin acceptable enough to keep the prices at their current level.

If they drop prices because of the economy, when times get better they will have a harder time raising the prices to even more than $200 if they should so desire. Going from $200 to $225 is a lot easier than going from $150 to $225. They don't want to set up an expectation that prices will ever go lower.

It's up to people like Irving Azoff to figure out how to maximize the profit margin even in a bad economy. He, his underlings, the concert promoters and the venues get to figure out things like - If the Eagles charge less per ticket and sell more, will they sell enough more to increase the profit margin? If they sell 2000 seats at $200 they will still make more than if they sold 3000 seats for $125... but perhaps they could sell 2500 if they dropped it to $175 and therefore it might be worth it (Obviously this does not reflect true numbers). Same for all the prices levels - even ILAA. If they sell 25 5-star ILAA tickets for $800 they still make more than than if they sold 35 for $500. Who cares if that means more seats are empty? TicketsNow works along those same lines as ILAA.

I do not believe the Eagles concern themselves with this and that they just give Azoff a free hand. At the Hall of Fame induction after Don thanked Azoff by saying that "without him we wouldn't be here," Glenn added from behind him that "We might still have been here but we wouldn't have made as much money." It got laughs but it was the truth. I believe their attitude is: "Let Irving do his thing. He'll ensure we'll be making as much money as possible and there certainly isn't anything wrong with that! This is America. Doesn't everybody want to make as much money as they possibly can?"

They only need to concern themselves with it when they are asked about it. In response, most of them say something to the effect of "You get your money's worth - we play a long time, solo stuff too - it's like three concerts in one; we are a premier band so of course prices will be higher for us than for lesser acts; there are other acts that charge more" etc. etc.

All this to say that the Eagles will stop charging high prices if and only if their profits drop as a result of exceeding what the market will bear.

Their logic: If the market bears it - if a significant number of people will pay our asking price - why should we lower it?

Oh Geesh--Do we really have to go there again? I've been more than vocal about this subject in the past. I think it's ridiculous the money they demand for tickets (rather it be Eagles or Azoff), and don't even get me started on the whole tshirt and memorabilia thing! I know I'm guilty, I spent well over a thousand $s last year in tickets and asseccories and I have no one to blame but myself for it. I have also said that they have probably seen the last of my money tho. And I won't go there as far as paying that kind of money and then being told when I can sit and stand, take pictures, etc.... Yes I'm bitter but again, no one to blame but myself for doing it! I have been for decades and always will be an Eagles fan for life which I feel gives me the right to be a bit critical. You will never hear me say anything negative about their music past, present and most likely future but the "business end" of it all, somewhat sickens me! I sometimes wonder if they have lost sight of who put them on top (not Irving!). Again tho, I have to remind myself, as long as people like me keep buying the tickets and merchandise, I guess they can keep doing it.

Sorry for my rant, but those of you who know me have heard it all before and you have to admit, they one was rather mild compared to some! :)

TBFan, I'm going to issue a blanket agreement with any of your rants past/present. I just don't understand. T-shirts in particular are free promotion, a way for your fans to say "these guys are It" and for that I (grudgingly, with a cringe) have to admire the Warped tour bands (wretched though they may be) who offer t-shirts almost at cost simply to capitalize upon the free promotion it affords.

Soda, I completely understand the economics and supply/demand/relative value concepts. However, I cannot reconcile this with tracks like "Business as Usual." At some point you either have to Dave Matthews it (keep costs/rules at a minimum and let everyone party) or Sinatra it (accept that you're a king and start singing about the Good Life). The Buffet/U2 modus operandi of singing about life on the streets but living like royalty really aggravates me. That said, if you ever feel like going to law school and switching careers, you know where to find me....

Well, the ticket prices are one thing you can't blame Grateful Dead for! And, they did have a few followers <LOL>

But the Eagles have pretty much always been after commercial success if the accounts I've read are true. And, I mean nothing detrimental with that statement.

Sadly though for me, they have pretty much lost their revenue from my price of admission. I paid the price a few years ago (several times) and have seen 'em and loved 'em. I'll be content from here on out with CDs and DVDs. Just too rich for my pocketbook after adding in the travel expense.

Yeah, I hear ya. Looking back, I see Prettymaid's three-word answer would have sufficed. lol!

Willie - it makes me sad that you aren't going to any more shows but I understand. Just remember how happy you were in that fourth row seat, though, and what a wonderful experience that concert was. Remember that excitement you felt when the guys came out and played How Long, the euphoria of the show and getting to hear them sing their hearts out on every song, how thrilled we felt when we left Cincinnati together (and Chicago too even though your seat was further back). The happy memories are there - don't ever let those go.

On the contrary, I appreciated your reply. I apologize if my comment indicated otherwise.

Willie - I actually do not intend to frequent concerts anymore, either. I thought my first Eagles experience (September of last year) would prove life-altering, as they were the last of the legends I had never experienced (save for the Beatles/Doors/etc. who died or disbanded prior to my birth, though I did catch McCartney). Honestly, while I enjoyed the show, I might as well have stayed home with the CD. No improv, scripted jokes (including the damn "credit card" one preceding TITTL in which I fail to discern one iota of humor) and Henley seemed utterly bored. Though I'm glad I went, it will not happen again. Neil Young often sounds hideous and I occasionally dislike the songs he selects (I suspect he deliberately pulls out ill-received tracks just to test us), but you never know what you're going to get - every concert is like a Christmas present. Perfectionism is a formidable beast.

Soda, you don't play fair!!! :hilarious: Like I've said so many times---that was the most awesome concert experience I have ever had (and I've had MANY) because, even tho I had already seen them, I was that close, sitting smack dab in front of Tim with Katie, who was also in awe, and getting a little Glenn lovin' didn't hurt either. I will always be forever grateful that I was able to spend that $ at that time and experience it! It is something I will never ever ever ever forget. But I am trying to keep things in perspective. It still burns me every time I see the price of a ticket, or I think about the fliers that someone here talked about on their seat about the stand/sit "policy", among other things that I won't go on about. I just want to scream "How dare you?". I cannot stress to anyone (and I have tried with everyone who has ever known me since about 1976) how much I truly love this band and how much respect I have for most of the members, past and present. They are by far the most talented musicians that have ever made music. But that being said, I don't like greediness and as we fight and struggle for every dollar we earn I will not part with it quite so easily in the future with the economy the way it is.

ABM---Glad to know I'm not alone in feeling like this. It's not as if I don't intend to attend any more concerts but I can honestly say I will probably never ever spend that kind of money on a ticket ever again. If it hadn't been the Eagles, I wouldn't have ever spent it in the first place. It was the frickin' Eagles!!!! I wasn't about to miss that chance-again!!!

Like I said before, I have been to tons of concerts and can honestly say that one of the best concerts I have ever attended was Styx just this last March. For the money (around $45.00 or so if I remember right) it was by far the best value for a concert. They interacted with the crowd, told stories, had everyone up and dancing thru the whole show and threw out thousands of dollars worth of merchandise to the crowd. These guys put on a show like no one else, gave it their all and from what I've heard, always do! They might not be making the millions that some bands are but you can tell it's all about giving the fans everything they can. And again, I remind you, I spent only $45.00 a ticket but I got well over $200.00 worth of entertainment, if you know what I mean!

Here's a link to my review here on the Border for it, if you are interested.

Regardless---I still love my Eagles but still maintain they need to lighten up while they still can. I fear that they may lose fans that aren't as dedicated as me if they don't.

Think of me and wonder if I will be paying A$559.60 per ticket again?! Those were 'Diamond' tickets and I went to four shows. The 'Gold' ticket in Melbourne cost $227.70.

The total was $2246.10 I don't think they can seriously charge that much next time, surely.

I bet they charge just as much... maybe even more. That was four years ago, after all. Inflation, devaluation of currency... yep, they'll probably charge more. But hey, we'll see. I hope I'm wrong!

Agreed. Until people stop paying the high prices, they will continue to charge them.

I did the VIP 5 star once. At $800 per ticket (2) I felt really guilty for doing it and will never do it again. To not even get to meet a band member for that is just plain ridiculous. Even the best seats tickets at $187 each (2) are too much for me to ever do again. I'd like to see them again, but I won't do that. And I've loved the Eagles since the beginning.

But honestly, how rich do these people want to be? Can they never get enough? :-x

At the level of financial success the Eagles are at, money isn't money any more. It's just a way of keeping score.

Wow-interesting topic we are on right now. Glad to know I'm not alone in feeling the way I do about not only the outrageous price of tickets but in saying that I wont go see them again at that price!

We should start a poll~~ If they tour again and charge the same prices for tickets, will you pay that price to see them?~~ yes or no. It would be interesting to see the results I think.

Willie, this is what I'm hoping for:

A Borderer party followed by an Eagles concert. I would gladly pay the airfare and hotel stay to meet you guys, then probably pay $60 for a nosebleed seat at the concert! :hilarious:

Glad you enjoyed the Styx - I have no idea who they are but will have to scope them out, now. I didn't know quality acts still toured in such a manner! The heresy! Imagine charging so little for a concert and providing so much! How ironic that people with experiences comparable to yours tend to spend even more on dvds/merch as a thank-you, and spread good will on the band's behalf. Consider us Exhibit A of the "Cheap Ticket Prices Foster Positive Ripples" unofficial research study.

I will most certainly read your review - thank you for the link!

The total was $2246.10 I don't think they can seriously charge that much next time, surely.:woah: I'm.... not even certain how to respond to that. Do they presume you sit around printing currency all day or...?? Wow. Unfortunately, I would expect them to, as others have indicated, charge even more this time around. You have my sympathy!!

..I was just looking into seeing a Jimmy Buffet concert in November, and the ticket prices are basically the same as they were for the Eagles, which really suprised me...seems to me that all tickets are basically the same price these days....

sodascouts
08-20-2009, 06:33 PM
Yeah, the prices were comparable for U2.

But I figured, for U2, I'd just get a "cheap seat"...

Until I realized that the MAJORITY of the venue was considered "Price Level 1" seating!!!!!!! Since there were fewer "cheap seats," they sold out in MINUTES. My friend and I had gotten on Ticketmaster at 10:00 and by the time we got in the system, no tickets under $100 were available.

What a joke.

I believe that's the venue's fault, not U2... but they might be driven to do it buy how much the band was guaranteed to perform there. I would imagine the same applies to the Eagles.

I can tell you that my mother is still angry with me for paying that much money to go to five shows. I felt however that I needed to be in the expensive seats in Sydney, although I only had one second row seat (for the very last show). But I will be doing this again if I can, except that I intend to swap Brisbane for Melbourne because I can get a discount on a hotel up there.

Don't forget there was also the merchandise. I bought T shirts at every show which were $40 each, plus the program which was $30 plus a Hotel California mug which was about $15.

By the way ABM, your avatar is very clever. Love it.

Stars, I havent seen it yet.. but Jenni, my daughter, was saying the same thing. I'll have to watch it!

Pies arent really my specialty but I make them a lot during the summer with all the fresh fruits we have on hand. Once upon a time about a million years ago, I had a business baking cookies and selling them to local coffee kiosks and cafe's. THAT'S my thing.. I do cookies... but I can do pies too! *G*

after spending the last month and a half in the middle of the woods, i am just happy to be able to listen to their Cd's again. I've actually never brought expensive seats at a concert, i always buy the cheap nosebleed seats, in fact when i saw the eagles i was in the very last row. i also remember when i went to go see fleetwood mac apparently a good chunk of the upper price level tickets didn't sell, so they were upgrading some people as they walked in the door (including me!!!!!!). the best deal i ever got for a ticket was for James Montgomery which was 20 dollars and there wasn't assigned seating, and there was only about 200 people, and then they had a dance floor right in front of the stage so i got to be right up front:partytime:, and then afterward him and the other band members were just walking around so if you wanted to you could talk to them. it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

If I could pose one inquiry I'd want to know about his horses, what with him living in Texas and all. And if he doesn't have horses, I'd like to know why the hell not? He's so into constructing houses, why not build a great barn? I'd very seriously consider relinquishing my day job to run his stable. I could sleep in the groom's quarters. But I guess that's why I don't really fit in with the rest of the general population.

An Eagles excuse to head west would be completely legitimate. Plus I'd like to see the redwoods in San Francisco again. Man, the worst part is the waiting.
