Geeze!! I have really missed out on playing this game. I've finally gotten caught up on reading all of the posts up to this round. It was fun reading about everyone's opinions about each of the videos. I'm sad that i missed out on the discussions. I have only myself to blame.
I made a list when i first started reading all of the posts and marked off the videos accordingly. I realize i'm coming into this game when the decisions are getting more and more difficult for everybody and they are definitely not any easier for me. I've taken into consideration how much i like the song as well as the quality of the video and how much the video relates to the song. I think the remaining videos definitely do a good job of all of that but as much as I like this song, the video has never appealed to me much (with the exception of Glenn's hotness of course). My vote is for YBTTC.

OMG - It looks like it's time to try to form a coalition to save You Belong To the City. Now, maybe it's not as romantic as Soul Searchin' or River of Dreams, but it is an exceptionally well done video. IMO this is the most artsy, sophisticated, original, and creative of all of Glenn's videos in the way it tells its story and does not deserve to go down this early. And if I haven't convinced you yet, then take another look at Mr. Frey's hotness ...

So please hear my plea  - Save You Belong To the City and ...
Vote for Soul Searchin'!!!
P.S. I can't believe I just wrote this because I love the Soul Searchin' video, too. It's just not as creative and well done as YBTTC, IMO.

And OBTW thanks for the well wishes on my 5,000 posts. I'm going to carry my celebration over to Frey Fever. That is what I had planned to do originally, but the other night when I was posting the results of the last round, I was having issues with my pc and messed up the immunity question. I had to "waste" a post to explain that so I hit 5,000 earlier than I had planned.

I agree 100% with everything Dreamer has said about YBTTC. This video, although it doesn't have the literal storyline like Smugglers Blues, packs a punch when it comes to visuals. The camera pans past the sax player to show the city skyline at night, then through the window into an apartment where Glenn sits alone with his Siamese cat, all the while with the slow sax intro of the song playing. Then comes the steady, driving beat of the song, and Glenn is on the move, walking through the city. Not since the beginning of the movie Saturday Night Fever with John Travolta has the image of someone walking to the beat of a song been so explicit. The constant motion of people out on the streets is haunting, as is the music, as Glenn continues to walk restlessly through the city. I won't go on with my analysis of the plot, as Soda does an excellent job here.
http://www.glennfreyonline.com/solo/moviestv/ybttc.htm
YBTTC is a clever, artistic video and does a great job of matching the images on the screen to the mood of the song. It certainly deserves to stay around longer than Soul Searchin' and The One You Love. PLease consider our arguments as you vote.
I cast my vote for Soul Searchin'.

I'm voting off 'Soul Searchin' this round, not for any deep, profound reason or anything but simply when given a choice of the final 4 videos its the one I like least. I mean I DO like it, but I just prefer the others. Ironic, as I've just and FINALLY managed to buy/win the SS song book on ebay.
Rebecca, Belated Happy Birthday......
And Dreamer! Congrats on your 5000th post. I'll do it 'properly' in Frey Fever later!

I love You Belong to the City - as PM and Dreamer have already said, the urgency of motion, the striking visuals contrasted against Glenn as he goes through the city, moving with that relentless throbbing beat, driven by the city, driven by his need to be immersed in it. (And yes, he's hot - don't hold it against him that he makes smoking look so cool in it. ;) )
I like romantic videos too, but this one is something different and unique - something more sophisticated. Something is missing in his life and he's desperately trying to fill the void by losing himself in the culture of the city, in the music, the scents, the life... ironically, the fury that surrounds him soothes him. It's like his cigarettes - both stimulating and relaxing, always addicting. And like an addiction, he can't step outside of it. It's driving him, controlling him in a way. He's moving to a relentless beat and he can't help responding to it. He immerses himself to the degree where it's sliding over his consciousness until he just isn't thinking anymore - it's just like a dream. He can feel safe in the midst of the people who don't pay any attention to him, free to attempt to deal with his own demons, to try and get away from thinking about the things he's done... if he can.
I also find the interaction between Glenn and the woman intriguing in its nontraditional approach - she pursues him, at one point actually grabbing his wrist to keep him from getting away. Perhaps she symbolizes the inescapable lure of the city to a man who "belongs" to it. He may try to stay away, to get away, to resist, but in the end he is seduced by the city and surrenders to its power over him. Once he's let himself become immersed again, he revels in it. It's a hunger to him, and I think his psychological need is being symbolized by physical need. Even in the song that happens, with his driving desperation being described in terms like "You can feel it. You can taste it." The desire for whatever he's getting nearer, and I don't think he even knows what that is, drives him onward.. all the while to that beat, that ever-pounding beat that just gets more intense as the sax builds. He welcomes the intensity of it all. He can make it; he can take it. He craves it.
And in the morning, he wakes up and gets ready for it to "start all over again."
Obviously, this is all just my interp! I'm sure the video comes across differently to others. I, however, find its representation of the psychological addiction to city life fascinating.

To behave in a manner befitting a completely petulant five-year-old, I cannot believe you people are attempting to vote off my absolute favorite music video of all time. This is not merely a superlative employed to win an argument - it was the very first video I hunted down on youtube, the video I keep trying to purchase on iTunes, the video that evokes beautiful imagery in my mind every time I notice something teal. Is it dated? Perhaps the Miami Vice clips are, and the horrid dress and teased hair the Femme is trapped in. Is Glenn's acting a bit forced? I suppose, but I still adore '80s teen movies regardless. Deleting all the screencaps I've saved for the sheer joy of flipping through them or creating livejournal usericons would completely negate the necessity of an external hard drive for my laptop. The song is always in the Top 25 of my iPod because listening to it invariably calls the video to mind, and I meander into a hazy, smoke-filled daydream about wandering through the streets of Milwaukee with my high school boyfriend after seeing Phantom of the Opera for the first time (not that this means anything to you, but...). Anyway.
So... The Top Fifteen Things I Adore about "You Belong to the City"; or, Why You Shouldn't Vote It Off.
15. The image of the guy playing a sax against a steel blue sky pricked with lights of unknown origin is rather fantastic.
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=544
14. Glenn turning off the telly before departing through revolving doors. Yes, I’m childish, but I’d love to hop in and run circles with him. It’s good sport, really. And he has a very nice meander, I might add.
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=545
13. The smoke-interrupted-by-taxi image from :43-46, coinciding with the first low swoop of the sax after the beat arrives. What symbolism: nope, the city doesn’t give a hoot about you or anything you’re attempting to do with your life.
12. Easter Egg for Monty Python fans: doesn’t Glenn’s silhouette against a store window conjure images of John Cleese robbing a lingere shop? I can almost picture Glenn in a striped suit: “Well… Just a pair of knickers, then!”
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=546
11. I love that the girl actually follows him out of the bar and hails him as he’s attempting to hail a cab. (Didn’t you learn anything from It Happened One Night, Glenn? Gotta show some leg.) Kudos to the casting department, too; she’s gorgeous but high-class enough to make the obvious one night stand seem inevitable as opposed to sleazy. The video leaves you invigorated instead of laced with a fervent desire to shower.
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=549
10. The two beats before the first chorus (1:45-46), when the camera swings around in a blur to convey the fast pace of a downtown area. I remember almost squealing with glee the first time I saw this video, perceiving it as an indication that the video fully intended to proceed on all cylinders.
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=557https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=556https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=555
9. The look on Glenn’s face as he watches the girl snub another guy at the bar beneath the vocals “…still just a face in the crowd.” Anybody else feel like bounding up behind him for a hug?
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=550
8. Glenn gazing out the window despondently, restless to the core. Welcome to my Wednesday nights as a teenager. Adored this one so much I used it to make the Glenn panel of my avatar.
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=552
7. The indisputably fabulous sequence starting at :35 with striding strides purposefully to the beat of the song. This could have comprised Exhibit A for criminal charges of “Hokey to the Extreme” but, as Prettymaid stated, instead manages to highlight the song's inevasible backbone.
6. Instead of employing some coy imagery or acting out the song at its zenith, the video features a rather peculiar fellow folding himself into… a pretzel? Who knows. Welcome to the city – don’t ask, just keep walking.
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=551
5. The pensive, quasi-Sophocles moment at the end. The video actually tells a story – a young fellow who followed his restlessness onto the streets, experienced an evening, and marched back into the harsh morning to start all over again (to echo soda's sentiment).
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=543
4. The girl’s little hop at 4:09, as though she’s indulging in the preschool game of avoiding cracks, and the way Glenn kind of pauses to watch without interfering.
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=548https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=547
3. As someone reared in the heart of a Midwestern city, this video so adeptly depicts urban life words cannot even describe. One must navigate a street in the manner of a video game, deftly circumventing breakbeat dancers, Vespas helmed by people who may or may not actually know how to steer, bike riders who assiduously ignore traffic of any sort, agonizingly slow tourists, haughty businessmen bustling along with their noses elevated…
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=554https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=553
2. The Look. The jacket with jeans and sneakers. Carelessly open shirt. Yeah, he’s cool; and he’d like that tooled on something in gold, please.
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=542
1. The phenomenal cityscapes – my favorite part of cities! Cruising around at night or perching atop a high altitude to survey the illuminated who-knows-whats, wondering what each prick of light represents, what’s happening in that window, where those red dots are going. This video always seemed a loving tribute to his city of origin, and succeeds with exemplary style.
https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=541https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=537https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=538https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=539https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=62&pictureid=540
All right... clearly, I'm a bit out of control. All apologies. To summarize: I adore "You Belong to the City" and (not quite politely) plead that it not receive premature termination. [Insert audio of knuckles cracking menacingly.]
I also cast my vote for Soul Searchin'.

First of all, Soul Searchin’ made such a brief exit last round with very little discussion, and since I was one of those leading the charge, I’m feeling a bit guilty. I just want to say again that I love the video. It is so sweet, and what girl doesn’t love it when a hot guy shows his vulnerable side like Glenn does this video. I also love the gospel choir and even how they invoke the social commentary into the video. It deserved to end up in the Top 5 in this game, IMO, as does The One You Love. Both videos showcase Glenn’s acting ability, which is very appealing to me. The One You Love is also a very well done artistic video. Again, the angst and vulnerability that Glenn portrays are melt-worthy, especially when that skank is getting it on with the other guy in the car and leaves Glenn literally standing out in the cold. :scowl: Unfortunately, all of the last few rounds have been difficult because there are so many really good videos to choose from. But, to quote a very wise man, “it’s the nature of the business” and “someone had to lose”. Now that it's almost a sure thing that TOYL is going down this time, I am going to return to strategy …
I cast my vote for River of Dreams.
P. S. Too bad that there are no more immunity questions cause we still had a few good ones that we didn't get to use.

Well, looks like everyone's holding back their votes this round. This is getting extremely difficult to decide now - there are 3 great songs with 3 great videos left. I love all of them, and it is really hard to choose. However, since we must do just that, I am going to urge everyone to vote for River of Dreams. As gorgeous as the song is, I don't think the video quite measures up to Smuggler's Blues or You Belong To the City. It's just not quite as cinematic or conceptually strong, even though it is uber romantic. As usual, I'll withhold my vote for now until I see if the coalition works.

I'm about to go to a friend's and spend the afternoon there, so if you can, wait for my defense of the video! lol In the meantime, this is C&Ped from my summary of the video on GFO (http://www.glennfreyonline.com/solo/moviestv/smugglersblues.htm):
In this award-winning video that inspired an entire episode of Miami Vice (http://www.glennfreyonline.com/solo/moviestv/miamivice.htm) in which Glenn starred, Glenn plays a smuggler (his then-wife Janie plays the smuggler's female accomplice). The video is like a short movie, fitting the lyrics exactly and doing an amazing job of packing danger, suspense, and intrigue into a small segment of time. It's one of the most cinematic videos I've ever seen.
[Skipping past summary to my favorite part]
In the video's most suspenseful and clever scene, Glenn hurries down to the hotel's elevator bank and presses the button to go down. In the lobby, the bad guy has pressed the button to go up. We see the bad guy get into the elevator. Cut to Glenn, waiting. Cut to the elevator where the bad guy is cocking his gun. Cut to Glenn as the elevator door opens.... we're sure there's going to be a confrontation... nothing. After Glenn gets into the elevator and the doors close behind him, we are shown that there is a second elevator. Its doors open to reveal the bad guy. He's missed Glenn by seconds.
[That scene was so good that the first time I saw it, I was scared for Glenn!
Another favorite part:]
The interrogation scenes are also very cleverly done. The verse matches up perfectly, as it appears Glenn really is answering questions - "They move it through Miami, sell it in LA..." The interrogation scenes of he and the girl are interwoven, and we see that time is passing as Glenn goes from being in his suit and tie, to no suit jacket, no tie, and a partially unbuttoned shirt. Finally, he's barely able to sit up straight, his hair is a mess, and he appears exhausted.
[Great way to incorporate the show while showing passage of time.]
Finally, Glenn gets shot in the end. That choice took GUTS. Glenn knows it's not the "happy ending" his fans want, but it teaches a lesson.... crime doesn't pay. Glenn could have ended the video riding off victorious - the cool hero, too smart for the law - but in the end, the Desperado pays for his ways with his life. This shows the kids the TRUE smuggler's blues. The danger isn't fun and exciting - it's real and deadly.
So PLEASE Glenn fans - don't it against this video that Glenn gets shot. It was important and brave for him to do that. Don't penalize him for trying to get a message across to impressionable kids watching MTV.

Oh no, not River of Dreams, which to my mind was unknown to most of us until Soda rediscovered it. What woman could possibly vote off a video that has an image of Glenn Frey getting out of bed, getting soaked by a hose and holding a little baby chick?!!

Although I think it's time for River of Dreams to go, I need to place a couple of votes for Smugglers Blues to help even the score. All through the game I have struggled with which of the two videos I wanted to win, Smuggler' Blues or You Belong To The City. Earlier in the game I even placed a strategic vote for YBTTC, thinking I was going to stick with SB. But I just can't. My head says SB is the more well done video, but my heart tells me YBTTC is full of imagery I love and tells a story that cleverly interacts with the song.
Therefore, I cast my vote for Smuggler's Blues.

Another reason for Smuggler's Blues to win is the level of Glenn's involvement. It's essentially a mini-movie starring Glenn Frey. His knack for acting really comes into play here and adds power to the video. It also does so in You Belong to the City, but to a lesser degree. As for River of Dreams, its romance is undeniable. I love to watch it. When I compare its simplistic approach to the sophistication of the other two, however, it just doesn't measure up.
I cast my vote for River of Dreams.

What woman could possibly vote off a video that has an image of Glenn Frey getting out of bed, getting soaked by a hose and holding a little baby chick?!! Ding! The baby chick scene gets me every time! I couldn't believe I'd never seen the video before.
As for Blues v. City, I keep returning to the fact that anyone with something resembling a knack for storytelling could convey a decent drug-related tale and produce accompanying images. Is it a pretty cool video objectively speaking? Certainly; however, several others have or could duplicate its theme with equal success.
By contrast, not everyone could pen a track like “You Belong to the City” and employ such an artistically-arranged series of images and sequence of events to evoke the sense of a Midwestern urban environment. Blues tells a tale but does not pluck at emotions; City pushes the listener along an engaging beat that effectively blurs their surroundings into white noise and transports them to a sticky summer night between the blaring sirens and pinpricks of light glinting against the darkness of an uncaring world. It’s a love song for a city, one of his only tracks that flies directly in the face of the forty-year-old tenet that Henley’s the master songsmith and Frey’s the unabashed, straightforward one. The lyrics dovetail one person’s experience with a general sense of uneasiness regarding potentially deviant (or simply unremarkable) prior actions; it could be used, in metaphor, to relay an experience in rehab (touching on the same theme of “you can never leave,” this time it’s “you’ll always belong to the city”), or generally to comment on aging and the fact that some people never really do or that life’s journey never ends and you never really arrive anywhere (“still don’t know where you’re going, still just a face in the crowd”). In VH1’s ‘80s marathons it always pops out as one of the few videos that really could air today with very little tweaking - a small change of the girl’s dress/hair, and it could have resulted from any era, really. The Miami Vice integration is unobtrusive and does not require any prior knowledge of the song’s inclusion on the soundtrack. And Glenn’s outfit is unequivocally cool, even two-plus decades later.
I've hemorrhaged at the mouth again - sorry about that. Could just be me.
I’m apparently one of the few who prefer “River of Dreams.” Ahh, well. I vote for Smuggler’s Blues.

I love the ROD video but in terms of the effectiveness of what is being shown, it doesn't work quite as well as the other two. However, what GEF said about it is true...
Another part of SB I love is the bathroom scene where you can see the Spanish word 'Aguilas' (Eagles) scrawled on the wall. The whole thing just rocks.

You Belong to the City is well-done with great visuals, that's for sure - but Smuggler's Blues excites me. It's absolutely riveting. I'm on the edge of my seat, breath held. YBBTC hits you aesthetically. Smuggler's Blues hits you VISCERALLY.
The visuals and lyrics work so well together that it's like a soundtrack for a movie. Heck, the thing inspired an episode of Miami Vice! How many times does that happen? It just shows you how effective this is.... and original in the sense that it takes a plot that could have been tired and overdone and makes it fresh. Yeah, anybody could do a run-of-the-mill smuggler's plot to the music... but how many could do it so effectively? How many could pack this much punch, time it this well, stuff so much suspense and drama into a 5 minute video? Not too many, as is evinced by its award and how memorable it is, sticking with you years after you've first seen it.
It boils down to the entertainment factor for me. I love You Belong to the City, but when it comes to holding my attention, making my heart pound, engaging me full-force - that's Smuggler's Blues all the way.
Put simply, it's the one that I most enjoy watching.
I cast my vote for Smuggler's Blues.

A strong case has been made for why Smuggler’s Blues should win this game. I agree that it is a great video. Now, I am going to make my final argument for You Belong To the City, although others have been very eloquent in describing it. As good as Smuggler’s Blues is, I still don’t think it is quite as unique, sophisticated, and artistic as You Belong To the City. I think what appeals to me more about YBTTC is what others mentioned earlier – the plot for Smuggler’s Blues almost writes itself whereas YBTTC’s story is so creative, yet fits with the song beautifully. The storyline, together with the incredible photography make this video about as cinematic as you can get, IMO.
There is another thing that I forgot to mention earlier about the YBTTC video that I am interested in getting people’s ideas about. Glenn seems interested in the girl because he even goes into the bar after spotting her through the window. So why does he leave the bar and not pursue the woman? I have two theories – maybe he thinks she is out of his league since she appears to be a rich, high class girl, or it may be that when she is, obviously, annoyed at the guy that tries to hit on her, Glenn figures she is not on the make. Either way, he doesn’t want to take the chance of rejection. Of course, once she pursues him, he’s not gonna turn down a sure thing.
Finally, I want to mention the shots of the twin towers in the video. Now, of course, at the time this video was made, the towers were photographed because they epitomized life in the city. However, now, I am very moved every time I see how beautifully these images were captured for eternity in this video. Those gorgeous shots just add an extra emotional dimension to the video that was never even intended.
So now may the best video win …
I cast my vote for You Belong To the City for the win.

Okay Dreamer, you asked for it!
I think the guy who tries to light her cigarette in the bar is the guy who stood her up at the beginning of the video. Perhaps Glenn can tell by what he hears that there is a "relationship" between the two of them, and that's the last thing he wants to get himself involved in! So he walks out. I think it was a smart move to have her pursue him, instead of vice versa. It makes him seem so much more appealing! JMO!

Ding! The baby chick scene gets me every time! I couldn't believe I'd never seen the video before.
I know! It just came out of nowhere. Back in late 2006, we had a member inquire about it and none of us knew what she was talking about. Then, a couple months later, I stumbled across it on some random site while looking for Glenn videos. We have a whole thread dedicated to that moment of rapture: https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=301
A few months after that, it was put on YouTube by UMG and we all could enjoy it easily. Then, they took it down again. (Lovely, eh?) I put it back up on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/gfovideosurvivor) for the purposes of this game, and I'll keep it up until they take it down.
There is another thing that I forgot to mention earlier about the YBTTC video that I am interested in getting people’s ideas about. Glenn seems interested in the girl because he even goes into the bar after spotting her through the window. So why does he leave the bar and not pursue the woman?
I think he leaves her because she seems to be very high-maintenance - a woman who would take a lot of effort - and he doesn't want to bother with it. He'd rather keep it low-pressure and find an easier "companion" for the evening. On a deeper thematic level, I think she symbolizes the pull of the city life itself and its inescapable allure for those who "belong" to it. He tries to leave the high-pressure situation, but all she has to do is touch him and he gets drawn back in.

Dang it!! I missed voting by one hour. Glad to see the video I was going to vote for won anyway.
Although I didn't get the chance to participate in every round, it was fun going through this thread and reading all of the interesting discussions.

Another win win Survivor game in the bucket. You just can't seem to go wrong with these games can you? Every video is a winner!
I will say tho, I am surprised that the final count was so lopsided in this one. I really thought when it came down to these 2 videos, it would of been closer in the end.
Congrats to Smuggler's Blues!

Glad you enjoyed the game guys! These Eagles Survivors are such a hoot and so fun to play that I'm eager to run 'em, and I know Dreamer feels the same way. I'm working on some more Eagles games besides these Survivors (which have become a fun staple around here)! Survivor is good because it's not too simple, nor too intricate - and it centers around the Eagles. Finding another game like that isn't easy.

Well, at least I did agree that the games were fun until you all voted off my beloved You Belong To the City video. Now, I'm just bitter!!!
Of course, I'm not really bitter - that was just a joke. I really do enjoy the Survivor games too, and thank you all for your kind words and participation. As Soda said, they have almost become part of the board.
Now, even though I am disappointed and disagree with the final results of this game, I respect the tribe's decision, so ...
Congratulations to Smuggler's Blues.

What I wouldn't give to watch some of the home movies/videos these guys made over the years. You know, the ones the public will never be able to access. Those would be worth a fortune, don't ya think?

Congratulations to Smuggler's Blues.
Well by golly, I respect your decision Dreamer. You know what they say, great minds think alike! We'll just have to work on these poor, uninformed minds! :hilarious:
Seriously, as you guys know I was leaning toward Smuggler's Blues during the first half of the game. It's a great video!
Congratulations to the winner - Smuggler's Blues.
