no problem, Brooke,

I noticed something today looking at photos from this era. Apparently, in the OOTN insert, the photographer took it upon himself to give Don a more fashionable outfit.

The insert:

Compare to this outtake:

Smart photographer. lol

Glenn must have had a thing with Eagles icons, notice the pin on his jacket, plus the medallion necklace.

Yeah! Back in the day, he was always talking about how he was the third best guitarist in the Eagles out of 3, lol. He always credits Don with having the best lyrics and voice, Joe with having the best licks, Tim the sweetest disposition... he really does downplay himself.

Maleah

awww.......that's sweet!

Freypower

In one way it's sweet. Then he turns around and refers to himself as 'the quarterback'. He runs the operation and he always has. He is just very good at delegation. I think he thinks the band works better when he allows the other members to have their turn in the spotlight, which it does, although he should not let it happen at his expense so much. His statement in F1 that Don is the 'chief vocalist' I find far too generous. To me he and Don are and always have been co-lead singers.

So here is a nice example of 'spotlight sharing'.

I agree that him and Don have always been "co-lead singers" and that he pretty much runs the operation. You can tell he's a natural "leader. But I don't think he allowed anyone to have more of a spotlight at his expense. Call me crazy but I don't see Glenn as being a pushover or doing anything he didn't want to do. I guess I just don't see Glenn getting any less spotlight or attention than the rest of the guys. I think he prides himself more on being able to call himself "the quarterback" and that it pretty much says he runs everything or most things. Speaking of all of them having their own individual talents and abilities, one thing I've always thought that Glenn has done really well is to put music together. It seems like any song he's involved in is really catchy musically or has a beautiful melody. I think that's a special gift because what good are the lyrics if the music sucks.

Oh and by the way, that is a gorgoues pic! :D

I think both Glenn and Don are such perfectionists that they would have worked long and hard about who was best for lead vocals on each song. Both have so many good qualities, but Glenn always seems to have been more comfortable introducing songs. If you read 'Flying High' the impression is that Glenn played down his own talents in order to keep the band together - after all, every band member has been talented and probably a little egotistic (maybe excepting Tim), so it must have been particularly hard to keep everyone happy and productive.

Great pics, everyone!

Freypower
01-14-2007, 06:56 PM
That's right - Glenn is not a pushover. If anything he pushed the other band members into doing more while he oversaw what was going on. My complaint is that this has sometimes been taken a bit far. In HFO, for instance, only three lead vocals by him made the final cut.

Maleah
01-14-2007, 07:16 PM
I do have to agree about the HFO thing. I think the choices that made the cut were somewhat strange. I think they could have left Don's HOTM on and left off NYM. I'm not sure how they make their song choices for any concert or dvd......but I would assume that they are choosing ones that they think are most popular or well-known. Other than that, I have no idea. I guess I may be naive, but it would just seem weird for any of the band to sit and argue about how many of their solo songs deserved to be on the set. That would seem a little egotistical to me. I do wish they would choose more Glenn songs. I love YBTTC......but I really love Smuggler's Blues, Found Somebody To Love, Soul Searchin', and The Heat is On, among others. But then, at that rate I don't understand why they don't let Timmy sing a solo song or a Poco song either because he only gets two.

sodascouts
01-14-2007, 07:21 PM
I didn't mean to imply Glenn was a pushover by any means! It's the mark of a good leader to be able to identify and utilize the strengths of everyone on the "team." And while Glenn is the "quarterback," I imagine all the input from every member is valued, especially Don's as co-founder.

His modesty and graciousness is what I was talking about when I spoke of downplaying himself. I do think it served him well when soothing egos back in the day. (He has even said that he "subordinated" himself to keep everybody happy). I also think that he can go a bit too far, like in Freypower's example. Leaving off Peaceful Easy Feeling, but including New York Minute? Inexplicable.

Ive always been a dreamer
01-14-2007, 08:44 PM
I agree with most of what has been said here. I've said this before, but I don't think Glenn is a pushover at all. However, I do think he tends to subordinate himself more than he should. It's hard to figure out why. When they were younger, I think the guys were much more immature and egotisical, and Glenn has said he did try to appease everyone. However, hopefully, they are mostly over that by now. Although, if you look at F1, I think it is pretty even between Glenn and Don, so I do think they still pay attention to such things. As a matter of fact, I just went to check, and if you count Silent Spring, Glenn and Don both have 11 songs, Joe has 6, and Tim has his usual 2. However, when they cut songs from the F1 tour, YBTTC was one of the first to go, leaving Glenn with no solo songs. If it was cut to shorten the set, he should have chose something else to cut. If Glenn didn't want to do that song anymore, he should have replaced it with one of his other solo songs.

Maleah
01-15-2007, 02:36 AM
I wonder how they decide how many solo songs to include and which ones. New York Minute seems like a strange addition (imo, of course) to HFO. And I wasn't around at the time, but I hear Smuggler's Blues was one of Glenn's biggest solo songs. So why not perform that one? Or did they maybe just not feel that it sounded like an Eagles song? After listening to a lot of the solo stuff, I think most of it sounds like it could have been recorded by the Eagles. Are there particular solo songs by each member that you guys wish they would perform?

If Glenn didn't want to do that song anymore, he should have replaced it with one of his other solo songs.

With River Of Dreams for instance. I would love to hear this song in a show. In the other thread which Soda has started I chose Smuggler's Blues, because I can only choose one song.

The legendary Eagles played in Moskow.

The legendary US band the Eagles didn't do shows for whole five years.
However, on Thuesday Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh and Don Henley were on stage at the Olympia stadium in Moskow. For the first time in their 29 years career they performed in front of a Russian audience and played hits like "Hotel California".

Neither Henley or Frey look quite normal there!

I'm going to go with the guy with the beard being Glenn, and guy with the moustache being Don. However, I acknowledge that it's very possible I'm wrong.

What am I missing? In the pool photo the guy with the moustache has darker hair and a slimmer build. That's why I think it's Glenn. The face is also long and thin like Glenn's. Don's face is much rounder. Also Don's afro is slicked back because he has been in the pool. I see that in the baseball photos Don has no beard, but maybe the recording of PCHFC was done before he shaved it.

Maleah

Does anyone else agree with me that the band in this photo is (left to right) Felder, Walsh, Frey, Henley, Schmit?

http://glennfreyonline.com/images/xmascoverbig.jpg

I am so confused every time I look at this photo because I was absolutely POSITIVE that it had to be Don with the beard. But then the confusing part to me is that when I look at the guy in the middle, his arms are really thin and his shoulders are really thin and square, and to me look like Don's. But something about the guy on the right just looks like Don to me. I don't know if it's the way he's sitting or the shape of his face or what. So I don't know what to think anymore :? lol :D

Maleah
02-05-2007, 11:25 PM
oh and one other thing that I noticed just now when looking at the picture............does it look like the guy in the middle has enough hair to have an afro?

Ive always been a dreamer
02-06-2007, 12:20 AM
Here's my opinion - I think it is Felder, Walsh, Henley, Frey, and Schmit. I agree it doesn't look much like Don or Glenn. However, if you look at other pictures of Don around the same time, his look had changed and the afro was gone. Also, Don was actually more slender than Glenn during that time.

Maleah
02-06-2007, 12:29 AM
Also, Don was actually more slender than Glenn during that time.

That's what I thought too........and like I said the guy in the middle in that pic has very slender shoulders and arms.

Which just confuses me more  :D

Plus, Glenn has always had thicker hair. It's just that back in the day, his went down when Don's went out, lol.

In this photo taken around that time, see how thin Don's hair is - the sun shines right through it. Although it's still technically the 'fro, it's not any longer than Glenn's. In fact, there seems to be less of it. Again, Glenn's goes down further (look at the bearded guy's neck, there's hair hanging back there).

I really can't tell which is which. Maybe it's neither of them! Maybe the bearded guy is JD Souther. And I don't know who the other one is!

But it must be them since it's the record cover! My guess is the bearded one is Glenn and the other one Don. :?

glenneaglesfan

This is a conundrum. I had always assumed left to right was Felder, Walsh, Henley, Frey, Schmit. The one second from right just looks like Glenn to me - right hair and right chest. I can't see him as Don there at all.

Let's try the other side:

sodascouts
03-25-2007, 02:36 AM
My pattern with all the guys is pretty consistent - first I look at the eyes, then the mouth, then the hair, then the throat, chest, and on down. This pattern only changes if something is highlighted - for instance, if Glenn is singing, I'll probably look at the mouth first, and if his shirt is gaping open well, then I'll be looking at the chest first. :pimp:

For my part I look at Glenn's eyes, hair, mouth, nose! down to his chest at least (like Soda I love the gaping open style), and further depending how much is there! But when he's singing or talking that voice does it for me every time. :smitten: He just totally takes me over! I just close my eyes and listen up. As for the others, while they're perfectly nice they just don't have the same effect. But my daughter (5) drools over Tim and I think goes for the hair followed by the voice  What a pair we are!

Ive always been a dreamer
03-25-2007, 09:27 PM
Wow - that is a great pic you posted Soda. Don is exceptionally hot here. Just LOOK at his smokey blue eyes there! :pimp:

As far as your question, Maleah, I had to think about it because I didn't think I really have a pattern of what I notice first. I think it is whatever stands out the most. For example, in Soda's picture the very first thing my eyes were drawn to there were Don's eyes. I also do usually notice the cleft in Don's chin as well. For Tim, I would generally say the first thing I look at is the hair and for Joe, it would be if he's wearing goofy clothes.

As far as Glenn - I totally agree with GA about the voice. It gets me everytime as well. But, as far as pictures, again it depends on the pic. I had to do a test here so I scrolled down and looked at some of the AV's. When I look at GEF's Dublin AV, the first thing I notice is definately that mouth. When I look at Brooke's young Glenn AV - it's definately the hair, eyes, and the mouth. However, when I look at my AV - it's the cigarette that always gets my attention.

And OBTW - Molly's AV does absolutely nothing for me.

Freypower
03-25-2007, 10:52 PM
And what about my current av Dreamer? :D

All I see in your av is the chest...!!!

I have other things I look at. If it's a 'singing' photo I always look at where Glenn's mouth is in relation to the mic. Is he up close & personal or is he 'belting it out' which means he's leaning back? Then his eyes. Are they closed or is he looking at something? Is the hair as carefully coiffed as ever or a tiny bit dishevelled? Etc.

The reason that photo is better than the Livin' Right era photos are, IMHO, two-fold: 1) for some strange reason, during the Livin' Right period, he showed no (or almost no) chest. You gotta wonder what's up with that?! 2) The LR haircut was terrible. Who told him it was a good idea to eradicate that thick, gorgeous hair, and replace it with spiky stubs! Not good!

Luckily, his hair grew back a bit after Livin' Right in time for the other Soul Searchin' videos, but still no chest showing until 1990 or so (well, maybe a smidgeon here and there for televised interviews, but never for photo shoots).

My scholarly analysis. ;)

badkitty33
04-23-2007, 07:03 PM
I agree wholeheartedly. NEVER one for short hair, I agree there. Do you think perhaps, Soda, that he succumbed to a "chest waxing", and that could be why he showed no chest? Or maybe someone advised him it was unsophisticated (not my opinion)?

Either way, I concur with your "scholarly analysis"! 8)

Ouch! If he went through all the pain of a waxing -wouldn't he at least want it documented with photographic evidence?

Here's the opinion of a former gym rat and weight lifter (me)...I think he couldn't get the chest as buff as the arms (not uncommon in some guys, the chest is a tough thing to work on) -so he didn't want to spoil the "illusion" of being "totally buff" and kept his shirt on. Or maybe the only 6-pack he ever managed to have was the one he drank! Just my humble opinion.

lol! Makes sense to me, Molly.

P.S. - speaking of waxing - Mr. Frey seems to have suddenly sprouted chest hair in the 80s that he did not have in the 70s.

If I could (PB is refusing to load AGAIN) I would post the Livin' Right photo. Yes, he had short hair. He still looked good. I don't get a great deal out of the early and mid 70s photos, I'm afraid. It wasn't until he cut his hair that I realised how attractive he is.

Actually, I may be the only one...but I think his hair in the LR video is ADORABLE! I love in the beginning when he's "out of shape." It has that kind of messed up look. *sigh* :D

FP, I agree, it was the first short haired picture of him that really won me. However, I'm still fascinated by wasted Glenn.

I hadn't noticed the lack of chest hair shots in the Livin' Right era. I'm sure you are right, Molly, that a waxing would have to be acknowledged...maybe the new missus insisted...who knows?
