I thought the Ridgefield Playhouse was the first YT of Tim singing 'What am I gonna do', but I've now found that there's an earlier version (which was obviously 'reported' on this thread because otherwise I wouldn't have known about it ).

I never saw Poco live, but without a doubt, my very favorite Poco moment that I've ever seen is this gem!

Ahh audiences singing along is part of the fun.. I doubt it bothers Timothy at all as he has been performing in front of audiences for soo many years I'm sure he's used to it. If anything I remember in Chicago (in 2009 when Expando was released) he was VERY taken by how many already knew Friday Night and were singing along. I think it just shows an appreciation and love for the music by the fans.

BTW I haven't said this in the last 10 minutes I LOVE THE ACOUSTIC LWKUA!!! :inlove:

Me too - I just love that live acoustic version of LWKUA - sooooo beautiful.

And as far as singing along to the songs, ITA with timfan. As a matter of fact, I think Tim actually told the audience to feel free to sing along at The Hamilton in D.C. For my part, I eagerly sang along with every song, although I tried to keep my voice very low since I don't think many folks there actually came to hear me sing (not withstanding VAisFEL and Zelda, of course  ). Anyway, it got me a few nice looks from Tim. I think he very much appreciates the fact that there are folks in the audience that know all the words to his songs.

It seems every concert I've gone to lots of people are singing along. I keep it low, as dreamer, because I really want to hear the artist. But what are ya gonna do? The artists like it, usually, and then hold the mike for the crowd sometimes.

I feel like it's a total lack of respect to the artist...Sorry. This isn't a karaoke bar. When you have a world class singer in front of you & have to hear a bunch of out of tune fans ruining a song, it hurts my ears.
I can see it on some songs in a stadium venue, but in a small intimate venue it just seems tacky.
I did not hear Timothy invite people to sing a long, a least when I saw him, he didn't & I guess it's flattering to have people know the songs, but when you hear it back on the Youtube videos.........Ugh, sounds horrible:eyebrow:

Well then just call me Ms. Tacky!!!! I don't see it as disrespectful at all---in fact, quite the opposite and I would never be disrespectful to an artist. And besides, it's not like he's hearing me sing the damn song out loud, that WOULD be tacky, but I do sing basically to myself (which I believe, most fans have enough common courtesy to do) unless provoked by the artist himself, which I've been to countless concerts where they do do that by sticking the microphone out or motioning with their ear, etc that they want the audience to participate. Sorry if it makes your ears hurt, but I don't plan on stopping anytime soon.

And of course it sounds horrible on YouTube. My advice is if you're recording, you probably shouldn't be singing along but then I'm sure most of us lose ourselves in the moment and might do it without thinking.

To me it's something of a double-edged sword. I'm guilty of singing along although I tend to keep it low-key. On the other hand, many artists have been known to say it's a kick for them when the fans know all the words and jump in. However, I have to agree that hearing off-key unknowns on YouTube is a turn-off. And it DOES make a difference when you're in a large venue (i.e. stadium or arena) versus a smaller setting. Personally if I've paid to see/hear a favorite artist in a club or theater, I was to actually HEAR that artist and not the other people in the audience. Just my opinion.

I agree with you TBF...I'm sure they get a kick out of it...I kept catching myself singing to all Timothy's songs when I saw him...I hope I kept it low...I can't imagaine being up on stage and looking out and seeing no one singing along...what must they think then? what no one knows any of my songs? what they don't like them? I wouldn't think that would make him feel very good.

If you sing to yourself that's fine, but many people don't. When you are listening to Timothy sing, do you want to hear the person next to you or behind you singing??? And really BADLY!!! If the artist puts the mike out for people to sing, yes, that's fine & is expected, but some songs need to be done by the artist & people need to shut up & listen! Like I said it's not karaoke night!

We've discussed this in other threads, I think, but it's part of the live experience to have people sing along. If someone wants to hear just the artist, they can go home and put in the CD. I'm pretty sure if the Eagles played at a venue and no one sang along, they'd never return to that city again!

This is Timothy's thread and I don't want to go off track about Glenn, but at the Town Hall concert, during TITTL, the crowd was singing. Really singing. I will never forget the look on Glenn's face. I wish I'd had the camera at the ready. He totally appreciated it and looked awed by it.

To sing loudly and be obnoxious about it, mostly yelling the words instead of singing, well, that's a different matter altogether, and that story usually involves alcohol and far too much of it.

Like I said, there is a time & a place where it is expected, but I don't think on a slow, ballad type song, like "Love Will Keep Us Alive" people should be shouting out the song. And yes, I'm talking about the obnoxious drunk people, who are too loud. This is just MHO, I don't expect that an audience is ever going to be totally silent, but sometimes it's just too much, if you know what I mean!

Been reading some of the comments here, agree with the fact that we should take our cues from the artist before bursting into song. It's really offputting sitting next to someone singing loudly to one of your favourites and even worse if they're all tanked up. In an intimate setting, agree that it should be invited by the artist but there again, singing to oneself softly isn't going to hurt unless it's a really soft ballad and you're the only one singing!

I really loved that moment in F1 Tour when the audience just started clapping to Hole In The World..it was such a sobering ballad and it was kind of reverent in a way.

I went to an Olivia concert at our Sydney Opera House in Feb this year and she had a Grease segment...the boys were given their cues and the girls were given theirs to Summer Nights!! It was so much fun!! I sang my parts and I realised, 'man, where did that voice come from??' lol I'm lucky enough I can carry a tune, the whole audience joined in and it was great!!

I think the guys really enjoy us joining in but I think it's wise to use some discretion so it doesn't disturb other people :partytime:

Well - I completely agree that it is very annoying and distracting to have intoxicated or out-of-control loud mouths singing along at a live show. But, I was originally responding to this post of Topkat's, which is not the same thing to me ...

Oh how I can't stand it when the audience sings along. I'm surprised it doesn't completely throw him off track!

Anyway, I agree that the audience singing along is generally part of the live concert experience and I think it is gratifying to the artist. TK - I guess you should avoid sitting near me at any future Eagles concerts cause I'm likely to annoy you.

That's the video I was talking about when I made the original comment. I do think people should shut up during LWKUA. That is one song that should be sung by Timothy only. You can clearly hear the audience singing here, & not so quietly. Like I said, it depends on what the song is, & how loud people are singing, the venue. Here, I felt it was just too much audience participation for this particular song. Whatever... People seem to just want to argue on here sometimes...frustrates me!

Ive always been a dreamer
06-14-2012, 03:31 PM
TK - Sorry you are frustrated. I don't think folks are arguing just for the sake of argument here. There obviously seems to be differences of opinion about this topic here, and that is valid fodder for discussion on a message board such as this. Since we don't have the benefit of body language and face-to-face communication, it is sometimes difficult to convey tone and meaning over the internet. That's why I try to be very careful that the words I write are going to come across like I mean for them to. It's hard though, and I don't alway succeed. I use the emoticons to try to convey my mood, but even then, I've had many a joke fall flat. Oh well - as a certain long-haired bass player once sang - we gotta "keep on trying'. <joke intended>

BramwenR

I have just listened to this link above and I have to agree, in an acoustic setting people in the audience need to shut up in order to respect not only the man singing it, but also the quiet beauty of of the song. It kind of takes away from the feeling, Timothy would find it distracting I'm sure..as he did in this one (look at the dirty looks he keeps shooting in the same direction to the guy doing it):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rH30nXDWMWE&feature=relmfu

And this is probably why the poster only got 48 secs of it because it was so damn annoying. This is Tim's signature Eagles song, it deserved some reverence and that means, for the audience to SHUT UP so the man can sing it without distractions!

Rant over :scowl::sigh::pace:

Oh, I know Willie! That's my favorite song of Timothy's. It just tugs at your heart. Very bittersweet.

The first verse reminds me so much of my husband as a young boy.

When I was a little boy
I had a lot of friends
Running up and down the streets
'Til the day's end
There was nothing that we could not do
Superman strong
Keepers of the neighborhood
Then we all went home.

We've known each other since first grade and went all through school together. I can just picture him there from stories he tells of his childhood.

And then:

We had a lot to dream about
Music filled our minds
Sailing all around our heads
In perfect time

That part is us listening to the Eagles on the radio driving around in his 67 Chevy SS. The good ol' days!

As I've said many times in the past, it's these lyrics that reduce me to tears every time:

Don't go to church, but I feel the weight
Some people think I'm shy
Still I hope to shake the hand of fate
Before I die

In fact this lyric, which I've stated is my favorite all time lyric by Timothy, was made into a signature, a background and a FB cover photo for me by Lou. I treasure it!!!!!

yeah this is yummy!!...it's from the show Verna, Dreamer, and I went to in DC on 5/28...I loved hearing him do this song...sounded really good...I almost like his solo version better than the one on LROOE!...maybe it was just hearing it live...I don't know...I think if the Eagles did it live it would sound amazing too!

This is one of the reasons we love YouTube. To be able to capture rare moments like this one is so very special. Even though I did see his show in NY, I didn't really remember how special this song was. It's so great to be able to replay these songs later on...
Don better get with it. YouTube isn't going anyplace & it keeps all this stuff alive! Never to be forgotten!:inlove:

I saw the Eagles do it on the first night in Sydney, after which it was dropped along with GOTC. The live version was much better than the recorded version & I like the song a lot better than I used to (although LWKUA is better live too, I'm afraid I didn't gain any more appreciation of it).

I never thought I would see him do a solo show. I was so happy he decided to tour the Expando album again. I missed the first go round, but not this time.
I'm hoping that he's working on another solo album & will tour again! His voice here....Incredible:inlove:

Yes, surely they were told who he is, what I meant is if they weren't told...would they know who he is...I mean he is a well known Sacramento boy...so are they familiar with him because of that? or because they know the Eagles...seems unlikely to me..they are so young unless their parents are fans...or maybe they had never even heard the name before the teacher told them he was coming in...that's what I'm curious about...

Freypower
09-22-2012, 11:37 PM
If a celebrity is going to visit his alma mater, I would have thought that it would be necessary for the students to be told a) that it was his alma mater; b) that he is a famous musician with the Eagles. Whether they would or would not have heard of him would surely depend on whether or not they knew the Eagles. They may not have heard of him. Who knows? As to whether any of them would have known him just from Sacramento, I have no idea.

I think they sound great together. Seems this was Richard Marx show & Randy & Tim made a guest appearance...Richard let Randy open & close the song, & he did the middle verse, but it all sounded really good....That guitar player was so into that solo too, he was almost falling over, but if you notice at the beginning of the song he was smoking a cigarette...Tim seems to never know what to do with his hands when he's not playing bass...I have noticed that before. He doesn't really seem to like to hold the mike either. Overall though, a pretty awesome performance!

It IS hard to tell, but I'm pretty sure it is overdubbed - at the :30 second mark you'll see Tim singing "rose of cimarron" as background, but you don't hear his voice. Also, during his "grand finale" :), you can hear his own voice singing background harmony as well...so, my vote is it's not live. It sounds the same as the Top of the Pops/phallic stage prop version. Tribute to Timothy B Schmit

This is pretty cool. It is Timothy B and someone using some kind of paint program to paint a beautiful picture of him. The song is I Can't Tell You Why

I had seen the Ringo All Star Band show in Radio City in 92' Loved the whole thing. Everyone of those guys are SUPERSTARS! Loved Nils version of the guitar solo on ICTYW... He added to it to give it a new spin...

Have you noticed that Tim adds an extra "Ohh' at the end of the vocal...It was kinda sexy.....He used to do that but he doesn't do it anymore. I wonder if he's at all tired of that song after doing it for what 33 years???:fear:

MaryCalifornia
07-09-2013, 12:26 AM
Yeah, OK, I think that is him in the long sleeved brown shirt standing at the front of the stage at 7:15 with some percussion instrument in his hands and his hair still really long. This could assist with my quest to pinpoint the time frame he cut his hair. Is there a date from this video? Do you think that's him? I've always wondered how long after the Eagles initially broke up he waited, hoping they'd get back together, and then finally decided he had to go the MTV route and join all of the other pop stars with shorter hair.

SilverMoon
07-09-2013, 11:14 AM
The video is from Toto’s 1990 concert in Paris. Timothy toured with them in 1982. The person standing at the front of the stage is probably Jean-Michel Byron, a South African vocalist.

Topkat
07-09-2013, 02:51 PM
I could tell that wasn't him. it doesn't look like the way he stands on stage.

MaryCalifornia
07-09-2013, 04:14 PM
That would explain why we had a hard time identifying him! I assumed that based on SC's note, it was confirmed that he was on stage, and I had to choose which one of those guys was him. The only things I know about Toto is that TBS sang backup for them, and when I was in 5th grade my friends and I listened to their two famous songs nonstop for a week one summer at Lake Tahoe. I couldn't even name their lead singer, who is sort of rocking a Cure/Robert Smith look in this video.

But you're right Topkat, it is not his posture or mannerisms. However, the way he sang and moved with Poco was very different from how he conducts himself with the Eagles, especially when he doesn't have a bass in his hands, so I thought maybe he had assumed an onstage "Toto persona"!

Let's keep looking for old videos!

Edit - now that I think about that summer, I might have Toto mixed up with Asia.

Just watched The History of the Eagles documentary again and sister had taped a little of the next programme California Comes to the Whistle Test so thought we would watch a little of this – only had a few minutes of it. I said, in grip of new obsession, ‘Perhaps Poco will be on?’ Guess what the first thing on was: Poco with Just for Me and You. I felt like I made that happen … never believed in the power of thought before. If they hadn’t been the very first song on, we wouldn’t have seen it. What shall I wish for next?

There is no publicly available live footage of that era apart from what you see in HOTE.

(It's a shame for me personally because that era was the start of when I really would have liked to see some video; especially as there is no video for Heartache Tonight).

WalshFan88
08-18-2013, 12:38 AM
I really wish Irving and/or the Eagles would release all of the footage they have. We know they have more than what was on the bonus HOTE disc. Who cares if it's HD video. I just want to see it and hear it!!!! I would pay big money for a DVD collection spanning from their 70s tours (my favorite era).

So Irving, if you want to make some money, put this crap out and let us at it. :hilarious:

sodascouts
08-18-2013, 01:40 AM
Seriously. I would be willing to put out a lot of money for a live footage collection, even if some of it were low quality. Heck, even if they just released full versions of the concerts we saw clips from in the documentary, I would be willing to shell out major bucks. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

WalshFan88
08-18-2013, 03:25 AM
I hope they do that at some point, as well as make a DVD from the HOTE tour. That would be really nice and if they were to make this their last tour, absolutely put out the DVD of it.

But yeah, Long Run footage has been something I've lusted after for a long time. I've got some audio-only stuff but not video. Most notably Long Night at Wrong Beach, which I'd guess isn't one of their best shows from that era. ;) Plus Eagles Live, which I love.

Freypower

WalshFan88
08-18-2013, 10:11 PM
For me the 70s stuff is a lot rarer to find (especially LR era) so for me I'd #1 like to see the collection of that released first, then some of the more recent stuff like LROOE and HOTE, and maybe even more HFO shows. Everyone could get their favorite, but yeah for me - the 70s takes the cake... I want more of that era stuff. It's the stuff I never got to see, so I can be there in spirit when watching a video of it, much like with the HOTE bonus disc.

Yeah. Why on earth didn't they do this? For ages after that tour, my Dad would ask me whether there was a DVD of it yet? It would be the perfect present for him (and I could borrow it) ...

Noticing the head tilt more and more. Love it.

I saw the Eagles in London in 2006 I think and don't know how people manage to take these videos. I'm impressed. I have a normal but rather large digital camera (only 10x zoom) and I had to get a special dispensation to take it into the gig. Even then, I was stopped and had to explain that it wasn't a professional camera, that I had been told I could bring it in. Then I could only video a minute or so at a time (and I only would anyway as the files on my camera are so big I can't upload them anywhere) because the staff kept stopping people they thought were videoing.

I don't know why, but when he tilts his head when he sings, I find it incredibly sexy. My favorite head tilt is when he sings "cause I love you" in ICTYW on the HFO DVD. His face, his neck, his earring. That just really gets me every time. Glad someone is noticing the head tilt.
