I noticed in 'Today in Eagles' History' that this was the day the infamous softball game with the Rolling Stone Magazine staff was played. I also realized that we didn't have a thread dedicated to this game, which has become a much talked about legendary tale. I thought I'd post something to commemorate the event, so here's just one article about the game that Soda has on Eagles Online Central:

BTW - I love the first part of that article where it talks about the slimmy intimidation tactics that the Rolling Stones' players used such as visiting Don and Glenn's houses the evening prior to the game. I guess all was fair in game and war.

Does anyone remember this or is my brain 'freyed'? I just quickly scanned the article, but didn't see anything in it - but, didn't they actually kidnap Glenn's cat?

According to Glenn and Don, they tried to kidnap Glenn's cat Charlie, but apparently came away with only scratches! I believe Glenn said something like "Never try to kidnap a cat with the same name as you" (referring to Rolling Stone writer Charlie Young.) Young et al did admit to sneaking to Glenn's home and leaving a note threatening his cat on the door three nights before the game, but have never admitted to an actual abduction attempt. ;) This note was left alongside others that declared the Eagles to be "sissies."

And then, of course, the Eagles SCHOOLED those Rolling Stone guys on game day!

Hmm, it seems the video is no longer available on Rolling Stone's site. BOOO!!!! It was awesome!! I tried to save it when they posted it, but they disallowed downloading of it, and now it's gone forever. THAT SUCKS.

ETA: I found this on the site, but I can't seem to get the videos to play. Anyone else have any luck?

http://www.rollingstone.com/cms/home/music/rsstaffblogpost_2008/template/tpl.blogDetail?queryPath=%2fcontent%2fjahia%2froll ingstone%2fhome%2fmusic%2fContentPage_14062%2frsst affblogpost_2008%2flistOfBlogPosts%2fContentContai ner_99370&blogPath=%2fcontent%2fjahia%2frollingstone%2fhome% 2fmusic%2fContentPage_14062%2fblogContainerList%2f ContentContainer_58998

ETA again: I finally find a video link and it takes me to some spiel about Michael Jackson and their tribute issue for him! I feel tricked into watching an ad. I'm going to send an e-mail complaining.

If you'd like to complain too, send an e-mail to editors@rollingstone.com with your name and location and make your displeasure known!

That's funny Soda, because I'm just home for lunch and was trying to bring it up with no luck. Too bad. Oh well, you tried!

Oh and thanks for the pics! I'll have to read the articles when I have more time.

Good topic Dreamer!

I wonder what position Peter Cetera played

Centerfield.

He and Tim were second only to Glenn in total runs scored! In fact, together, those three scored 10 of the Eagles' 15 points.

I am reviving this thread in recognition of today being the 33rd anniversary of the infamous Eagles vs. Rolling Stone softball game. For those of you who may not be familiar with the details about this game, I would encourage you to read this thread. This is entertaining stuff!

I tried to click onto the link for the article in the first post, and got a 404 error? (which I'm sure is computer-geek for :cuss:)

The EOC links are dead because I took down all the articles after the other unofficial Eagles site got sued. Kind of freaked me out!

But here they are, kindly hosted by a third party site and thus freeing me from any liability. ;)

I always love reading about this and how they blew out RS!!! LOL  Love all the pics too on the previous page and still impressed how Glenn got his uniform to almost match the Pittsburgh Pirates uniforms. :D

I liked the conclusion of Glenn and Don's article:
"Their first error was to call the Eagles sissies in Random Notes. Their second error was to compete with us in front of girls."
'nuff said. :)

How I wish we could turn back the hands of time and take our place in the bleachers cheering on the Eagles - then it hit me - perhaps we can with the musical Hotel California - assuming there are plans to include this infamous event in concert with the appropriate musical soundtrack.

Thanks for the pics and links to the news articles - first time I've really seen the photos and read reviews of the game. Great memories!!!

Happy 38th anniversary to the Eagles win over Rolling Stone!

I've seen the photos before, but I hadn't read the articles yet. I liked Glenn's and Don's article more.

Here's a video of Charlie Young taking about the game.

I'm getting an error with it loading from my work computer, but it was fine this morning when I post it on Facebook.

I love that video but I can't save it. That pisses me off because it's an awesome video and you know that inevitably, they'll take it down and we'll never see it again.

If anybody figures out a way to save it, please let me know!

I found the LA Times report on the game at on a Joni Mitchell site.
http://www.jonimitchell.com/library/print.cfm?id=2024

One bit that surprised me was

The Eagles got off to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks largely to a double by Richard Hernandez (the band's tour manager) and triples by both Peter Cetera (the bass player from the group Chicago) and concert promoter Terry Bassett.
Is this the same Richard Hernandez who Henley fired on the HC tour (according to Felder's book and other reports) and yet he seems to back playing in their softball team by May 1978.

Has anyone come across the piece that the Eagles wrote for Rolling Stone as their prize?

He probably was fired later that year.

I think I must be. I don't know what's wrong with my eyesight/reading skills today.

He probably was fired later that year.
The firing was described as being in Montreal on the HC tour, which was March 1977 whereas the softball game was in May 1978. Possibly the firing was just a temporary thing.

sodascouts

If the firing was done in a fit of pique, I wouldn't be at all surprised if it were temporary. I also wouldn't be surprised if Felder had forgotten to mention that the manager was re-hired.

I found this article on Richard. Like everybody said. If he was rehired temporary or were still friends with the Eagles, he was gone in 1977.

Good find. It looks like it all worked out well for Ritchie Fernandez.

Maybe they patched things up enough to play softball or else Hilburn just got it wrong.
