This was just posted on Waddy Wachtel's page on Facebook. It's a tribute to the late, great Warren Zevon (of whom I am a huge fan.) Don sings his song 'Searching For A Heart'. The video is just text and images but there's some info on there about which Zevon albums Don appeared on, etc.

Moving.

The vid was just uploaded and put on YT in the last couple weeks.

About once a week I go through and do a custom search (going by upload date and using quotation marks to get the exact name) for each of the Eagles (past and present) looking for new videos to share either on my FB or on here and I just stumbled onto that one.

Here is one of my all time favorite Don Henley guest spots, this is Don duetting/singing harmonies with ex-Pink Floyd mastermind/bass player/singer/lyricist Roger Waters with "Watching TV" from Roger's 1992 album Amused to Death. In fact, Roger guested with Don at a Walden Woods concert shortly after the track was recorded as a return favor to recording this track.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKn0Yrziads

Quote from Roger about working with Don in 1992 "Don Henley. I love everything that he's done and it was great working with him on 'Watching TV.' He sang good. Don, you're ok with me".

Henley and Waters would play again in 2002 at the Timothy White Tribute playing "Comfortably Numb". Henley nailed David Gilmour's parts down perfect! (shame no video is available but I did hear it on bootleg and it was excellent, Waddy Wachtel added his own solo as replicating David Gilmour would be difficult).

Now Don behind the kit (looks like his Tama kit from The Long Run era) with Guns and Roses performing "Patience". This was Don's return favor from when Axl sang on "I Will Not Go Quietly" on the (at the time about to be released) The End Of the Innocence.

We saw her in August of 2011. She's a feisty one. I guess she has to be to be married to John McEnroe.

When she started this song I pictured Don walking out on stage to join her. Of course, that didn't happen. She sang the whole song by herself.

I enjoyed her. Like I said, one of the best female voices in R'nR, IMO.

Whoa! I just read that Don spent a million dollars of his own money to make that Garden of Allah video!! I had no idea! Do you guys know about the Garden of Allah? It was kinda like the original Hotel California. Tho it was a residence hotel. In the middle of Hollywood, lots of stars stayed there. Lots of crazy debauchery went on there a long, long time ago. Joni's "Big Yellow Taxi" is about L.A. tearing it down.

I knew about the Garden of Allah. It is a fascinating piece of Hollywood History.

Honestly, though, I'm astounded that out of the three new songs on Actual Miles, this is the one Don shelled out major bucks to make a video for. Now I see why he wasn't thrilled with Geffen - he shouldn't have to pay for his own videos!

However, imagine if he had put that money behind the smokin' song "You Don't Know Me At All" or his brilliant take on "Everybody Knows" rather than the gimmicky and overwrought "Garden of Allah." This is actually my least favorite Don song ever. That part where Don as the "devil" goes into a discourse on moral nihilism using voice distortion to sound ominous makes me cringe every time... and it's his second talking passage in the song. The first one at least utilizes some interesting imagery and allusions, but it certainly doesn't do anything for the song melodically and indeed starts to drag quite quickly. Let's not forget the cheesy quasi-Middle Eastern touches like the sing-songy chants of Sheryl Crow going "in the garden of aaaaahlllaaaaaah" during the chorus (completely out of place considering that this Garden of Allah had nothing to do with actual Middle Eastern culture; perhaps Don was trying to be ironic, but it was distracting). I think "Garden of Allah" would have been better as a written poem. The way the song is constructed robs the lyrics of their power. A sophisticated concept with many intelligent lyrical turns of phrase becomes farcical in its musical execution. JMHO.

The surrealistic dystopian video doesn't do the song any favors either. Not his best moment, but interesting for completionists like myself who want to see it all, the good and the bad.

Midnight Visitor
10-24-2013, 10:33 PM
To be honest, I don't like the song at all. I was afraid to say anything too negative. I was astonished to read that Henley put up a million bucks for a video. I know he's said he hated doing them. Of course with a loss like that one, it sure could leave a bad taste in ones mouth.

Is that Timothy Drury or another guy on Don's right side? I get them mixed up. I've been wondering what his name is too ever since I saw him in the interview part of the HFO video. I've been seeing him in a few concert videos in the 80s when he was in Don's band. I know he was in Don's band for years and then he played during the HFO tour. I know I've seen the guy on the right side of Don also in Don's band. He's either John Corey or Timothy Drury.

It's a 1984 audio interview with Don in which he talks about his two albums, the issues that matter to him and even about the careers of the other former-Eagles. He's fairly guarded but says more than I was expecting.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0GS5Yk74EE

ETA: It was posted on page 57 but not discussed, at least on this thread. Probably with good reason. He certainly tries to be diplomatic but the interviewer is pushing for dirt.

UTW-

I listened to this interview as I had never heard it before. Its interesting to hear this interview in light of what has changed in the time since this was recorded.

One thing I took away from this, were Don's comments about Joe Walsh saying things that offending him . From the time line I have heard, Joe Walsh was possibly hitting rock bottom or close to it around that time and really may not have been himself when he was saying these things that offended Don. Don may not have been aware of where Joe was at in his life. So many things going on to cause bad feelings and a lot of it was not even personal.

I think the years and life lessons have done them a lot of good and perhaps that's why in this phase of their career together as the Eagles they have managed to last 20 years. They now get each other, and sometimes as I believe Joe said in HOTE doc, they just don't know why it works but it does.

Probably the reason it wasn't discussed was that it is so long! However, these comments intrigue me. I'll be checking it out tomorrow when I have more time.

I thought it was worthwhile more for nuance than new information. Don speaks of Glenn with respect and even affection and yet he's very dismissive of Glenn's solo work (encouraged by the interviewer). It's not that Don is nasty but he's critical and I can see how that could be stulifying for anyone trying to work with him.

I look forward to reading your take.

Zanny, I think you're right about Joe's state at the time. Henley talks about Felder being about to put together a band and my guess is that's the band with Joe, Timothy and someone else (forgotten his name, but he passed on Led Zepelin before they got Robert Plant - loser!). According to Felder, they soon realised they couldn't work with Joe because he was in such a bad state.

The charity was called The City Of Hope. Its been around for years.

I remember watching a softball game in the 90s when all the country stars would play against each other for this charity. This was doing this annual music event every year called Fan Fair(Its not called this anymore. I forgot what its called now) The teams were called WSM and WSIX(the famous radio stations in Nashville).

So, it should (I emphasize should!) come out in the fall and it sounds like he will tour to promote it after the Eagles wind down in June. Which sounds like they won't be doing anything more at least this year. Boo on that but yay for Don touring!

This video is a year old! I thought I saw it before, and Shun answered my question on Facebook. I sent a message to Chideo and asked why they don't put dates on the videos. They asked who was reporting it as 'new', and I sent back some names and links. They said they'd take care of it, but really, all they need to do is put dates on the videos. I told them there are a lot of confused people right now, that think the tour ends in June and that Cass County will be out this fall.

That video was the first to be published on the website. The newest was about the Australian tour even though it was taped the same time as the contest they did to meet Don. How I knew. He wears the same clothes from a video posted last year. There was another video when he said something like something is about to happen. Taped during the same time, but came out this year before the Australian tour.

I usually check the website to see if their are new videos. Nothing new since early this year.

shunlvswx
10-08-2015, 11:16 AM
All performers wear make up on stage so the lights won't make them look washed out. So this is not really unusual for Don to say he wears make up on stage. He's probably been wearing makeup (probably powder) since 70s maybe the 80s. You also have to remember he said in an interview that Annabel is traveling with him to do his makeup. I thought I heard hair too, but definitely his makeup.

Ah, I remember that about his daughter being his make-up artist. It's just that I can't imagine the guys from the 70s, who deliberately wore regular clothes on stage, bothering with makeup. It probably came in with the 80s and music videos.

I agree that Don's backing singers have great voices but they are so young, I've got to admit that I felt uncomfortable, watching them share the vocals with Don.

I suppose I may have felt the same seeing black and white guys sharing a vocal in the early sixties. I'm not sure if I'd have felt this discomfort in the 70s or 80s, it could be an intolerance of the modern age. I hope I Get Over It.

With Lara Johnston singing a verse of Words Can Break Your Heart, it would be nice if Trisha sang a verse instead of coming in at different parts of the song.

I love Walkaway Away. Don looked soo hot in this video and his voice was amazing. His voice doesn't stick out in the song, but you know he's there singing.

Don't think its possible for him to look any better than he does in the other CC videos ;-)

I didn't like watching the backing singers upfront with Don either. Its probably because they are so young compared to him but I didn't like the way the first one kept looking at him when he was singing (Words can break your heart). He was lost in the song, with his eyes closed and she was staring at him like a love-sick puppy  She certainly has a lot of confidence! !

Saying that, Don sounded brilliant and I can only hope that he continues his tour next year, especially on this side of the pond

I'm glad I'm not the only person who thought that way!

Yeah - I kinda agree. It is a bit surprising that Don is using such young singers in his show. It does seem like it would work better to have them a little older. Maybe he chose them because they were struggling musicians whose careers need a boost. However, there must be some older singers who fit that bill too.

I think maybe Will chose them. He's Don's musical director, and a while ago he was asked what that involved and he said "Don tells me what he wants to do, and I arrange it". Also, the young ladies are all graduates of USC Thornton School of Music, which is where Will lectures . I guess Don would be able to reject them if he'd wanted, and tell Will to find some different ones.

Personally, I liked their voices, so I wasn't bothered about their youth. I thought they all sounded great in the duets. I do see what you mean about them being much younger than Don, and maybe you're thinking that makes the 'romantic' aspect of the songs less believable.

The three back up singers look even younger than they might be with their dress. They look like grown up girls in little girls dresses. I'm sure they were picked because of their talent rather than their looks though.

Steph, love your sig! Too cute!

Loved that video. Check out the elderly lady with the camera, absolutely thrilled to be there with Don. She shows up at about 43 seconds in, standing right above the yellow banner, then she's there again, camera at the ready, at 1:43. Then, at 4:14, Don's wrapping it up and she's cheering wildly (cream blouse, black sweater, white hair.) You go girl! Sheer joy! :yay:

I'm not sure if this is the right place for this but I couldn't find anywhere else to put it ;-)

I was listening to Spotify today for the first time in a while and saw that 'The concert for Walden Woods' from 1993 was available on it. Don sings an incredible version of 'The Last Resort' on it. It's the first time I heard it sung anywhere apart from the MTV HFO concert. Would love if he sang that on his upcoming tour.... this proved that it is possible

If you have Spotify, its worth checking it out

Do you have a Spotify Web Player link to this song? Or are you using the computer/mobile app? I'm using the Web Player and I can't find it. I searched for "Don Henley" and looked through his Spotify page. I also searched the term Walden Woods and The Last Resort.

On another note, I sort of remember that there was a Don Henley live concert bootleg on Spotify. It's not there anymore though. I don't remember what it was called.

Here's a video of Don lip syncing The Boys of Summer on a TV show from presumably 1984 or 1985. It's not the original audio track, since the uploader put in TBOS from "Get Freeze It," which I assume is a bootleg from the HFO era. It's not the smoothest video, but you could probably pause it at some points to appreciate Don.

And audio of The Boys of Summer from his appearance on Howard Stern from probably last year. It's the slowed down arrangement. It probably was posted before, but I wanted to revive it. I know it's not the best audio quality.

He went through a 'phase' of wearing those glasses for the Inside Job era - he wore them on his DVD (which I hated 'cos I LOVE those blue eyes!!!) But I read recently that he said he's actually sensitive to light which is why he hates all those flashes from cameras when he's on stage.

I don't know if this is even worth posting, but here's a video of Don introducing a couple speakers who talk about the Iran Contra Scandal at a fundraiser. The video as a whole is long, but his part is only from 0:00 to 3:10 or a little before that since people clap until that mark when the speaker begins talking. I assume this was around 1987 give or take 1 or 2 years.

YouTube video title for easier searching on the forum: Daniel Sheehan & Sara Nelson @ Don Henley's
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziBzXfYRNqM

1:16:40 to 1:19:25 - Jackson Browne explains why there's no formal Q&A, but they can ask the speakers questions at the reception

1:17:57 to 1:18:14 - You can see Don standing next to the speakers while Jackson is speaking. It zooms away a little before 1:18:14

1:28:37 to 1:28:59 - Jackson shows up again and talks a little bit.

Other than that I don't know if Don shows up during the speeches, but I don't think it's worth anyone's time to look for it unless you're super interested in what they're talking about. It's only like VHS image quality from the 1980s.
