'Outlaw Man' on the Earlybird DVD track 28. The live version isn't as perfect as the studio recording and that's why I adore it.

When Glenn shouts 'Hit it Randy' and Randy Hits It the bass guitar is just brilliant. The harmonies are chilling and the almost discordant end is nerve jangling. :rockguitar:

Today, it's "All Those Lies", solo Glenn.
Why I like it...
1) the guitars - I'm not big on guitar solos but I like this. It opens with a purpose and comes back strongly at the end but doesn't overstay it's welcome. I've a feeling I like the base, too, but I'm not that good at distingushing the components.
2) the vocals - Glenn never sounded like this with the Eagles and it's a pity. I read somewhere that he received encouragement from Bob Seger for this album and it seems to have worked. He sounds a little rough, like he's had a hard night partying and it fits the song.
3) the lyrics/story - the Eagles were often accused of being misogynist with their songs of cheating women while in real life, cheating themselves. This is much simpler - it's a man who's woken up in the wrong bed or with the wrong women by his side wondering how he's going to get away with it. He does this by claiming people are lying to try to hurt them but at the same time he's plagued by his guilty concience.
4) the background vocals - his consience, I think. When he's telling his lies, they are there reminding him in the background. Best is near the end when his cries of "I ain't lying", "I don't fool around", "I'm telling you the truth" are following by mocking "ooh-oohs".

I don't understand why this one only got to #41 in the Billboard charts whereas lesser tracks from the albums made the opt #20. Maybe it just needed a good video.

Very interesting analysis. It is a favourite of mine too; he normally left cynical, world-weary lyrics like this to Don. My favourite part of the vocal is the line 'I can't believe you'd listen to those one-eyed jacks'.

I am not sure that he has woken up in the wrong bed, though. Although he 'woke up shaking' there is no mention of any such scenario, so therefore I don't hear anything about a guilty conscience. I think this interpretation is far too specific & the song is about the general disillusionment he was feeling after he left the Eagles. I don't think he is the one telling the lies; because of all the 'I'm a bad pretender' & you got to believe me' stuff. Someone has been telling her lies about HIM & trying to 'ruin my reputation'.

Oh, I think he's the one doing the lying, all right, or trying to "get his story straight" anyway. But I do agree that this song is not about an affair. Any mention of the name 'Shorty' makes me think of the mob. This is probably just another Glenn Frey drug song. ;)

Freypower
11-19-2013, 06:35 PM
But he only wants to get his story straight in that one line. The rest of it to me is about the lies told by others. Shorty is Irving Azoff. I suppose in the second verse when he starts about 'who else knows about the things I do' it could be that he's trying to hide something.

Interesting ideas. I hadn't thought of the Eagles break-up and I need to go back and listen again. I have a tendency to take things at face value (I'm gulible) so I was picturing just someone waking up after a night's partying and realising they'd probably done something they shouldn't have.

There's definitely a romantic element, though. He uses "baby" and says "You know how much I love you." He's trying to convince her that all the stuff she's hearing about him is lies and that he doesn't "fool around" on her. We, the listener, know he's already admitted to having to keep his story straight so he must be up to no good... he's a liar!

Prettymaid
11-20-2013, 09:47 PM
I don't know, I think it's more than fooling around on her... There's just no telling what these kind of people will do...I think he's mixed up in the mob and she doesn't know about it.

Well - it's sounds like the song may be open to multiple interpretations. As they always say, I guess the meaning of the song is whatever it mean to you.

One thing for sure is that I definitely agree with UTW and I absolutely LOVE the song. It is very high on my list as one of the best solo songs Glenn ever recorded.

ATL has always been one of my favorite Glenn solo songs. Love the guitar!

I've always thought he was cheating too, but the part about Shorty and who told who makes me think of the mob connection and that he's scared.

Like FP, I always thought of 'Shorty' as being Irving too since that was their nickname for him. But, then again, maybe he was talking about me.

How do you know for definite? Couldn't it be a fictional character?

Because I have always assumed that Shorty is a reference to Irving's lack of height. Irving was still Glenn's manager at this time. It always seemed logical to me.

All of my life I have loved Wasted Time the most. It was the lyrics, Don H's voice and just the whole vibe of the song.

But for the last 10, it has been TITTL. It hits me where I live, in the core of my being. That and I am slightly obsessed with Randy Meisner.

Having said that, there is not one Eagles song that I don't love or that I won't listen to. There is no skipping songs for me. I am a fan.

Here's where those liner notes get weird - I was wondering who sings those backup verses, and one of the singers is Maxine Waters! As in, Democratic Congresswoman from LA? Whaaa? Maybe there is another Maxine Waters, but how funny.

Isn't Shorty also David Geffen? He and Irving are the the "bookends," right?

1. Yes, that is the Maxine Waters who became a Congresswoman.
2. I've never heard Geffen referred to as Shorty & at the time this song was released, 1982, Geffen was long gone from Glenn's life.

This morning I woke up with Downtime playing in my head and couldn't get rid of it (not that I would like to, to be honest). It's getting late and I'm still singing:
Every now and then I gotta shut down
So I sit on my front porch
Take it easy for a minute and slow my mind
Then I get up, I jump into my car
And head down to the ocean
It doesn't matter if it's rain or shine
I just need a little downtime

:guitar:

Really like it. The idea of jumping into my car and heading down to the ocean (well, to the river in my case) for some downtime is very tempting

Seven Bridges Road. Perfect harmonies, excellent guitar sound.

By the way, I have a question concerning 7BR that can be asked only here, in the group of Eagles fanatics :nahnah:, as other people would probably consider it totally unimportant

As Wikipedia says abot 7BR on HFO, "Seven Bridges Road (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seven_Bridges_Road)" (Steve Young (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Young_%28musician%29)) - DTS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DTS_%28sound_system%29) - A remastered version of the recording featured on Eagles Live (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eagles_Live), with a clearer separation of the four vocal parts to exploit the full potential of a 5.1 speaker set-up: Timothy B. Schmit is on the front-left, Glenn Frey on the front-right, Don Henley on the rear-left and Joe Walsh on the rear-right. Frey, as the singer of the song's main melody, is also featured on the front-center channel."

Has anybody noticed that Wikipedia messed it up? Is this only me, or is there anybody else here who can hear Don in front-left, Joe in rear-left and Timothy in rear-right? Just curious... :eyebrow:
