hmmmm a tough decision this round...
I vote for The Long Run
Ive always been a dreamer
10-08-2010, 08:54 PM
I'm just going to tell you why I like The Long Run the least. For me, it's just a little mundane compared to the others. Even ICTYW, the ballad of the bunch, has a lot more going for it than TLR. And In The City? Come on guys, it's no contest. TLR just trudges along - ITC rocks! And it is an Eagles song!!!
See this is why what each of us think is "best" is so subjective. I totally disagree with PM here. For me it is almost the exact opposite. Where PM sees The Long Run as "a little mundane compared to the others", I would give that description to In the City. Now, I like the song and it does rock musically, especially live, but I don't think it is a standout. To me, it is repetitive, particularly the chorus, and the lyrics and melody are nothing more than average whereas, I love the music in The Long Run, and the lyrics, harmonies, and melody are exceptional. There is no way that song just trudges along for me.
To answer ltl, in the end, I do usually do try to vote objectively as I possibly can for what I think is the best song. I don't even always necessarily vote for my favorite song. My criteria for what I think is the best overall is based on the music, lyrics, melody, vocals, and harmonies. If all things are equal, I take into consideration who wrote the song or if it is a cover. This is what works for me, but, obviously, there are others that would totally disagree with my 'method'.
ETA: Forget to mention that I also consider the arrangements of songs when trying to determine what I think is 'best'.

I don't see what's Mundane about ITC. ITC To me, Describes the feeling I have for whatever City I'm in, if I am down or something. It's catchy, Rocks live, and has a great chorus.

Well EL - for me personally, any chorus that says nothing other than "In the city, oh oh; In the city, oh oh" honestly is not what I consider to be great. But, that's just me. As I said, it's mostly subjective.

I've always liked In The City but I never fully appreciated it until I saw it performed live for the first time just a little over two years ago. I think it's a good song on the album but to see it performed live is in a completely different league. Joe totally rocks on this song and it was that live guitar solo that won me over. That being said, I really enjoy the song and put it in my top 5 out of all of Joe's songs but I have to vote for In The City during this round. With ICTYW being immune it's next on my list. ITC is in my top 3 for this game but i just can't vote for TLR or HT right now unless I'm voting for one of those two songs for the win.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm going out to dinner this evening, so I may be a little late posting this round's results. I'll get them up ASAP.
I'm going to go ahead and vote now since I won't be around at 8:00. It doesn't matter this time anyway because my vote is not going to change no matter what happens between now and then. Well PM - sorry but I can't be here for ya this time. I have to try to save The Long Run. Quite simply, when I put it through my 'test', it comes out as the better song in every category for me. So ...
I cast my vote for In the City.

Never! I might joke around but I would never seriously get upset about a game. Plus I love ya too much, LTL.
Besides, I can listen to ITC whenever I want and love it as much as I want! :nahnah:
Now, back to business. Hubby and I watched F1 Friday night and I paid particularly close attention to the remaining three songs.
ICTYW is a beautifully sung and arranged song. I absolutely love the guitar solo at the end. It deserves to stay this round.
Heartache Tonight rocks. I like songs that rock.
Maybe I was too harsh on TLR last round. I just wanted to make the differences in the songs clear. I haven't changed my mind though.

It's too bad that ITC is voted off, but I can understand why it was. It's very catchy, but really simple. I hate to say that I agree with Dreamer regarding the frivolousness of the chorus.
I'm tenaciously voting for Heartache Tonight. It's a great song, I love it! But certainly not my favorite on the album.

This is really, really tough.
The Long Run is the title track of the album and, to me, an important lyric in encapsulating the journey of the band. It's got an upbeat sound, and I love Don's vocals. I get a kick out of watching him perform it live now. He gets really into it towards the end, and it makes me realise that it's actually a very soulful track.
Heartache Tonight is a song that you just have to turn up. Glenn's voice is perfect for it - smooth but rocky and bluesy. I love the slow drum/clapping sound at the beginning and the singalong feel. It's another awesome song to hear live, and when it gets to the "we can beat around the bushes" part, you can't help but rock along with it! It's pure Eagles.
I Can't Tell You Why is a stunning soul ballad. It has a gorgeous, moody feel to it and Tim's clear vocals are a perfect complement to his deep bassline. I love the lyrics, and I enjoy the extended instrumental period at the end of the song... It's sexy and tender and you can't help but drift away a little bit. Again, it shows you how much soul the Eagles actually have.
I am finding it very hard to separate these last three. Maybe one last listen will help!

As much as I love the last three songs, including the one I am voting for, it's just a no brainer for me on which one I need to vote for now. And if this one goes, the last 2 is a win win situation for me really. I won't care which way it goes after this round.
I vote for The Long Run.

Troub, I agree with pretty much everything you said about the final three. Two days ago, I was sure how I wanted the final three to go. (Even though a three-way tie would have worked too:)) However, last night, I gave them a final listen. To my surprise, I changed my mind. This round is easier than I thought!

Well this round is really hard for me, too. I love all of these songs and glad that they are the ones that remain standing in the final three. I'm so happy that ICTYW made it to the final. This says volumes about how important Timothy is to the Eagles. Journalists may misspell his name or not even mention him, but we fans know and love him and his contributions to the band.
That being said, I have to vote for the rocker, Heartache Tonight for the win. Troub already mentioned the drum/hand clap opening. Glenn's vocals are amazing, the harmonies are great and the overall energy of the song is contagious. As soon as you hear the opening riff you want to jump up and start moving. Well, I'm sorry to have missed the last round, but as my fave is still in the game it's no sweat.
As much as I love I Can't Tell You Why with its smoky vocals, great melodic interplay, and those slow, sensual guitar solos...
I cast my vote (to no one's surprise) for the awesomeness that is known as
HEARTACHE TONIGHT!
Because I am pressed for time, I'm going to copy and paste my description from the "Celebration of the Long Run" thread to explain why it should win:
Here we have the highlight of The Long Run which is right up there with the Eagles' best work. This song showed they could still pull it out. What's not to like about it? Glenn's vocal is off the chain - no wonder he won a freaking Grammy for it! The way he growls "Heartache Tonight" and belts out that chorus, the way he sings that "We can beat around the bushes" segment, even his whoops at the end.... they all exude vitality and energy; it's the way he sings the entire song. It's downright exciting to listen to it. It makes you wanna crank the volume up and rock out, singing along at the top of your lungs. The catchy guitar riffs, the way the guitar starts up, then backs off and sneaks back in as you move towards the chorus at which point it comes back full blast, the part where the music drops out and the vocals go acapella with just the beat, the use of the handclaps... everything about this song works. To this day it's a showstopper that brings the house down. To put it simply: Heartache Tonight ROCKS MY WORLD!!

Congratulations to Heartache Tonight and to the runner-up, I Can't Tell You Why. For some reason I feel like ICTYW was the underdog to The Long Run, and I like rooting for the underdog. Here's to a fun and interesting game! :soda:

Congratulations to Heartache Tonight!!!
Just in case I didn't make myself clear before, I absolutely LOVE this song. To me, it is definitely one of the top five songs in the band's entire catalog - just a cut above most of the rest. Nothing against the other songs, but I honestly would have been shocked if it had not won this game. I really do love The Long Run and I Can't Tell You Why as well, but my guess is The Long Run would not have won this game against Heartache Tonight either. All you have to do is listen to the audience's reaction at a live show to see how much most people love this song.
One thing I forgot to post earlier is about how much my young niece and nephew love the song. Whenever it plays when we are riding in my car, my 5-year old niece thinks Glenn is singing "There's going to be a party tonight". It makes her 8-year old brother really mad that she keeps messing the song up when she is rocking out to it.

CONGRATS TO HEARTACHE TONIGHT! :rockguitar::band::guitar:
Love it, love it, love it! Well done! Any of the last three could have won for me, but HT is my favorite from this album. We made it come out right!
Thanks for a fun game once again, Soda and Dreamer!

I was just cleaning out some stuff and found my few brief notes I took for this game. Never even looked at them because I knew exactly how I wanted it to go down.
Here's what they say....
Those Shoes-love the tune. Wonder if they had someone in mind when it was written. Love the way the line "You want someone to talk to. They just want to get their hands on you." is said.
In The City-Tho the harmony is good, I find it a bit boring.
The Long Run-Each voice is so distinctive. Can pick out each voice and who it belongs to. Was he thinking of a certain debutante in Houston? Love the way "Long, long, long, long" keeps getting lower and lower at the end.
I Can't Tell You Why-Tim's voice is amazing...emotional and soulful. I remember the first time I heard it, I was "lost" in it. Sells it with the emotion in his voice. Remember realizing that my favorite song on the album was sung by that beautiful new bass player!
The Sad Cafe-Love the words and Don's voice. The Distinctive voices again. Love when can make out who each voice belongs to.
Heartache Tonight-Love the beginning, "Someone's gonna hurt someone before the night is thru". Grabs you right from the top! Love every word of this song. The Don't want the night to end feeling here.
Teenage Jail-All I can think of is, "what were they thinking".
King Of Hollywood-The sexy voice of Don helps sell this. You can feel the "sleaze" of this guy. Glenn and Don's voices mesh so well. Tho redundant, how can anyone hear "We gonna take care of ..." and not want to melt.
Disco Strangler-Not as bad as some people make it out to be. Some of the phrases..."And Rome is burning but that's alright"... WHAT?
Greeks Don't Want No Freaks-What the heck? "Half hour later, you were barfing all over your girlfriend's shoes." Seriously? How drunk/high were Glenn & Don when they wrote it? I remember I use to love the line, "found her in the bushes with the boys in the band." Yeah--- I wish!!!

LOL! That line you picked out in Disco Strangler is the only one I like.
"He's the filddler in your darkest night - and Rome is burning, but that's alright."
It refers to the old legend that the Roman emperor Nero played the fiddle while Rome burned. I almost made that one of our Survivor immunity questions, in fact.
If the song is presenting the disco phenomenon as strangling rock'n'roll, one could interpret the "Rome is burning" reference as a metaphor for the blithe lack of concern about the obliteration of good music from the consciousness of the disco-lovin' populace. Just guessing. If I'm right, though, it was very cleverly done. I give "Disco Strangler" props for that, and that alone. lol

I'm so very happy that Heartache Tonight won!!! One of my favorite parts of the song is around the 2:40 mark when Glenn sings "Somebody" and at the 2:55 mark when he sings "Everybody". I often rewind those parts because I just LOVE his voice right there. There's something about the way he sings those two words that just makes me melt every time. Glenn's voice throughout the song is superb and for me this song goes down as one of Glenn's best on lead vocals.
I'd also like to give ICTYW a big round of applause. Although I'm partial to the rockers this song is one of the best of all of the Eagles ballads and it held strong against one of their best rocking out songs. :applause:

Congratulations to Heartache Tonight.
I had two songs in mind to win for the final round. In the City (my first pick) and Heartache Tonight. Since ITC didn't win, I'm glad Heartache Tonight did. :)

Thanks Lou!
If I had played my elimination order would have been:
Teenage Jail
The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks
The Disco Strangler
The Long Run
In The City
I Can't Tell You Why
Those Shoes
The Sad Cafe
King Of Hollywood
Heartache Tonight
I wish I shared the enthusiasm for ITC & TLR but I am afraid I don't, whereas I worship KOH & see Sad Cafe as very underrated.
