Time for our next Song Survivor! Our album this time will be The Long Run. If you're new, for a basic overview of the game, see this post: Survivor Overview (https://eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6551&postcount=7)

I'm going to list the songs of The Long Run here. Vote for the song that you feel should be eliminated from the list. The song that gets the most votes will be taken off of the list (or, in the language of Survivor, "Voted off of the island.") Each round, one more song will get axed, until there's only one left. Remember: you're voting for your LEAST favorite, not your favorite.

Each round will last 48 hours after posting to give people a chance to vote who don't post every day. That means that the first round will end at 8:00 Eastern time the day after tomorrow. If you miss a round, don't think you can't play. It's all good!

Since there may be discussion posts, be sure to make it clear when you are casting your vote. Votes cannot be cast after the cut off time of 8:00 on the second day, and they cannot be changed once you have voted.

If you get confused about what round we are in, look at this post. I'll always update it to reflect the current round. Also feel free to post any questions if you don't understand what's going on.

If there is a tiebreaker, then ALL votes from ALL previous rounds are tallied and whoever has the most prior votes is eliminated. That’s the way it’s done on the real show, that’s the way it’s done here. If there is a complete tie with prior votes (Murphy’s Law), then I'll have a sudden-death trivia question ready. The first person who answers it correctly gets to break the tie.

We also have immunity questions. We won't have immunity questions on the first or second-to-last-rounds, and of course we won't have them for the last round, lol. However, for the other rounds, we will.

Here's how immunity questions work. At the beginning of the round, I ask a question related to one of the songs on The Long Run. The first person who answers the question correctly gets to pick a remaining song to be immune - no one can vote for it on the next round. I'll allow two hours for someone to answer. If no one gets it right by then, then we continue the round as normal without any song being immune. You only get one guess per round, so be careful! Remember to include both the answer to the question and the song you want immune in your reply, or it won't count.

And the winner is....
Heartache Tonight

First I want to say, I don't feel there's a bad song on this album (I hear you groaning). This is one of those rare albums, for me anyways, that I don't skip a song on, NONE of them. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this album so this is going to be a hard survivor game for me.

You guys are killing me with all the Disco Strangler hate!! :worried:

My first vote goes to Teenage Jail.

I'm with you here, Willie ... well sorta. I do like all the songs on the album. However, it's definitely not my favorite Eagles album. It's funny, but I guess it just shows what a hardcore fan I am. When I rate this album along side the band's other work, it is one of my least favorites. HOWEVER, I still think it's terrific! The problem with the album for me is that it is uneven - it has some of the band's best work and some of their weakest. But for me even the weakest Eagles song is still good.

As usual, I'm withholding my vote for now.

TBF, I will join you and cast my vote for Teenage Jail.

I remember driving home one night from work and randomly, the radio was playing Disco Strangler. It surprised me, because it's not something you would expect to hear on a regular FM station. I gained a little appreciation for the song that day.

The first song to be voted off of The Long Run Survivor is Disco Strangler. "Disco Strangler," you may be looking for the good life, but you won't find it here. The tribe has spoken and it's time for you to leave the island. The rest of the songs may return to camp. (pssst.... Police are waiting for The Disco Strangler at the dock... the reign of terror that has plagued the Bee Gees will finally come to an end).

Awww - Poor Teenage Jail. While I agree that it should be the next to go ... I was hoping we could let it go down gentler. :weep:  Sorry that Soda's being so mean to you Teenage Jail ...

Okay, maybe not the best melody ever, but trudging ??? :woah:

What do you mean by inane lyrics - I think those lyrics are meaningful and deep.

Almost as deep as "you were barfin' all over your girlfriend's shoes..." :)

Like I said in the other Survivor thread, my least 2 favorite and my 2 favorites can pretty much be interchangable. So since TJ looks as if it's going down anyways, I'll mix it up with the other least favorite of mine.

I vote for The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks.

Almost as deep as "you were barfin' all over your girlfriend's shoes..." :)

I have to say in terms of inanity The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks has the dubious honor of surpassing Teenage Jail! However, it gets nudged up for me because at least it has energy and makes me laugh a couple times.

Of course folks who try hard enough can get deep meaning out of anything. I can see the paper now: "Nixon's Fraternity: 'The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks' as a Scathing, Highly Ironic Metaphorical Condemnation of the Elitist, Hypocritical, and Utterly Contemptible Behavior of the Republican PARTY"

I love In The City, although I do think, if you haven't seen it live, you may not quite appreciate the sheer awesomeness of it!

I really think this is so true, Troub. In concert, ITC rocks! :headbang:

Wc, thanks for saving KOH this round. This past summer (I really hate to say summer is gone. ) I've really grown to love it. Don and Glenn's voices and the guitar work is just awesome. I really think it's a very sexy song and deserves another round or two.

As for what goes next, my vote goes for The Sad Cafe. It's just a little boring.

I also totally agree with you guys about the whole in concert thing with In The City. It really made an impact on me first time I saw it live. But that being said, this game is about the album version and it's just not so much for me. I still think of it as a Joe Walsh song and not an Eagles also which doesn't help.

OMG - Just as I thought, things are gonna start getting exciting around here. I'm guessing there's probably not going to be much strategic voting towards the future in the next few rounds because everyone is going to have to vote to try to save their favorite songs. As I said earlier, I love In the City, The Sad Cafe, and Those Shoes. I gotta think about this some more.

Dreamer, with so many people strategically voting, it makes it very interesting and exciting.

If I voted straight from the heart, my votes would have been drastically different... but I try to keep that playing field even.

There are probably four song I won't mind taking the win, so I can't imagine I'll be dissappointed at the outcome of the game.

Regrettably I must pledge allegiance to "Those Shoes" in deference to the fact that it has motivated me to keep moving on many a long-distance run when I would have much preferred to curl in the corner potato bug-style. Plus, "You just want someone to talk to - they just want to get their hands on you" basically describes my life.

We should have these Survivor things more often - they're extraordinarily entertaining. Or perhaps I just enjoy arguing.... :nahnah:

Definitely not sexy, but I do consider it a very (for want of a better word) 'atmospheric' song.
The way it begins so quietly, and then builds up, with what I always think of as a sense of menace. And you can just picture the slimeball 'King'.
So in that regard, it is a very good song.
However, once the main tune starts I do think that it has a sexy 'feel' to it, and with different lyrics (something like 'Slowhand' by the Pointer Sisters, or 'I love to watch a woman dance') I think it would be dynamite. :)

For me, The Sad Cafe, is just too melancholy. I don't mind the lyrics, it's the music... too depressing for my taste.

Those Shoes on the other hand seems a bit more empowering. I know there are times when I wear a certain pair of shoes, it can take over my mood.

Two of my favorite Eagles lyrics are in this song:
Got those pretty little straps around your ankles
Got those shiny little chains around your heart.

So on that note, I cast my vote for The Sad Cafe!

Although it pains me to do it, I cast my vote for Those Shoes. I'm a big fan of the song, but out of the tracks left it ranks slightly below the others, for me.

As for King of Hollywood... I think the presentation of the song mirrors the situation that's being described in the lyrics. Yes, the subject matter is seedy, but it's all packaged up in a sleek, heady, shiny exterior, much like the circumstances that the girls (wannabe actresses) in the song encounter. Everything is appealing. Los Angeles must seem like a pretty cool place when you roll up there, seeking fame and fortune and adventure. All these offers from wealthy, powerful people are exciting and tempting, and you get taken in by the promises and the expensive gifts. But lurking beneath the surface is greed and exploitation. The song is dangerous, but it's delivered in a sexy, atmospheric way. I think it absolutely works and does a great job of capturing the dichotomy between the shiny surface and the dark underbelly of Hollywood for those young women seeking stardom.

The guitar work is moody, it's rhythmic and it has a heady evening vibe, the lyrics are daring and dangerous, the harmonies are smooth, and Don's vocals are SMOKIN' hot. It's sexy on some level because it's meant to be.

Ive always been a dreamer
10-02-2010, 11:44 AM
Wow troub! I was just getting ready to post something about the sexy vibe and undertone of King of Hollywood, but now I don't need to. You already read my mind. I also like what UK TimFan said about how the song builds in intensity (kind of reminds you of something else, speaking of sexy ).

It looks like The Sad Cafe may be on it's way out. Although there are still quite a few players that haven't voted so the outcome of this round is definitely not certain. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be around this evening so I have to vote earlier than I would like to. So as much as I hate to do this ...

I cast my vote for In the City.

Your explanations about "King of Hollywood" are well-put and make sense. I don't find fault with the music, especially the guitar. I just can't help feeling disgust and even revulsion whenever I hear the lyrics, and it detracts from the song for me.

The overlay of Glenn's falsetto adds an additional ominousness because of the unnatural sound it creates. Maybe it's meant to represent the duality of temptation; his pressure and her receptiveness to it, borne of desperation and a desire for fame that overpowers a sense of morality and personal dignity: the evil of the tempter and the corruption of the tempted. Along similar lines, the falsetto could be the "bad angel" on the shoulder whispering that the starlet should listen to Mr. KOH, that it would be worth it to comprise herself for the fame, the nice apartment and the fancy car... Only later will she find out that women like her "come and go."

And thus.... the results for round four are still up in the air.

There's a tie between Those Shoes and The Sad Cafe (8 votes each), and a tie between their prior votes (2 each). Thus, we need a tie-breaker question. The first to answer correctly will determine which song gets eliminated.

Tie-breaker question:

In addition to Glenn Frey and Don Henley, which songwriter(s) co-wrote "Heartache Tonight"?

INCLUDE WHICH SONG YOU WANT TO BE ELIMINATED IN YOUR ANSWER OR IT WON'T COUNT.

Not sure what to do with my vote, so I'll hold off for now. KOH seems a little dated to me... but I really dislike SC. Thinking even more deeply... it's one of the rare songs I almost always skip or can't listen to the whole way through.

So, now we have a problem. Restart the round or just keep going? What do you guys think? We have to decide soon... what a mess!!!

OK, I'm gonna put a freeze on the game until tomorrow night at 8:00 pm. Let's hear your thoughts.

Please vote:
1) Eliminate Sad Cafe, reinstate Those Shoes, and restart the round completely including a new immunity question.
2) Eliminate Sad Cafe, reinstate Those Shoes, restart the round... but carry over the immunity question result.
3) Resume the game as it is.

Oh Soda.

I would say, option 2, as 'The sad cafe' got more votes and the immunity question was won fairly. However... it could be that the person who won the immunity question might want to save the re-instated song, in this case 'Those shoes'. So I think it would be fair to offer the option of changing the immunity to the re-instated song.

TimothyBFan
10-03-2010, 11:17 AM
WOW--did I ever miss out on all the drama!!

I have to agree, I think #2 is the only fair option at this point but what UKTim said also....give her the option to change the immuned song.

Well - if this were a professional sport, and there was a mistake, the game would resume as it is. However, since it's not I would also vote for #2 with the same caveat that UK TimFan mentioned. To try to be as fair as possible to everyone, I think we should proceed as follows:

Eliminate The Sad Cafe, Reinstate Those Shoes, Restart the new round, give the winner of the last immunity question the option to change the song they want to make immune.

I think we have to give the winner the option to change the immunity question, especially if we want to make this a precedent for the future. If this were ever to happen again, the next time the song that twas made immune could be the one that should have been previously eliminated, so the winner would have to select another song to be immune.

Well I vote for #2. But it does create a conundrum for me because now I want to protect two songs I really like this round. However, had I had the option at the time I would have most likely chosen Those Shoes. So if the decision is made to go with option 2 with the caveat that I get to change my choice then I would like select Those Shoes for immunity instead.

Glennsallnighter

Well on the surface its #2. But another option is to include Eve's vote as well - the one that the time was in dispute of. He computer clock may just have been slightly slower or something. Then with Soda's vote as well, its still a tie? So we just maintain the Status quo as is? Just a suggestion. of course in future games this would not really be a precedent.

sodascouts
10-03-2010, 02:14 PM
GA, I'm afraid we can't pretend Eve cast her vote before the stroke of 8:00 just to make this conundrum go away. Board time is the standard because it's the same for everyone. It's the only fair way. If you're going to wait until the last minute to vote, it's your responsibility to make sure your "last minute" aligns with the board's "last minute." My "deliberations" were spent looking over old games to see if there was a precedent, and when I couldn't find one, I set it. ;)

As in any/all fair and legitimate competitions, all aspects affecting the outcome must be considered in the event of a “do over”.

Nobody’s perfect and human error is certainly a given (no offense), and everyone is entitled to make an honest mistake periodically.

That being said, I’ll go with #2, allowing Wildthyme to choose the song receiving immunity.

Precedents aside…life is not fair, but we’re on The Border.

10-03-2010, 03:11 PM
Well, IMO, life may not be fair, but that's because you can hardly ever reach a concensus about what fair means on any given issue. Everyone has their own intrepretation of what fair is so that's why it's impossible to try to please all the people all the time. But, I totally agree with Soda about using the board clock to establish the official time for the game. I can't personally see anything unfair about saying that all votes must be in before the board clock strikes 8:00 p.m. EST. I guess if Cinderella had a deadline, then we can live with one here as well.

To be honest, I think #1 is the most fair. The votes were miscounted (it happens - that is why Soda lists everyone's vote, incase there is an error), so it should be a fresh start and give everyone a chance to pick up where we left off - at the end of last round.

However, since most people like option #2, I will not agrue against it. I do feel Cami should be able to change the song she wants immune though, since she should have all songs "in play" to be able to choose from.

King of Hollywood reminds me of my law firm days, brimming with ambition and motivation to make a positive impact on the world and realizing the Powers That Be would blunt my efforts at every turn unless I engaged in certain extracurricular activities. Nothing sexy, attractive or even remotely appealing about it. (Though it does prove slightly inspirational insofar as revvinging the fight-or-flight response and low-grade homicidal impulses.) In spite of the lyrics, I do not much care for the melody, either. It's one I always skipped - reads like a cheesy '80s song from a B-grade movie with the kitsch echo effects and useless repetition. By contrast, Those Shoes actually has the sexy undertone to it - the narrator acknowledges that she "gets whatever [she] choose[s]."

I vote for King of Hollywood.

(Cracks knuckles and goes to stand behind Those Shoes.)

I also totally agree with you guys about the whole in concert thing with In The City. It really made an impact on me first time I saw it live. But that being said, this game is about the album version and it's just not so much for me. I still think of it as a Joe Walsh song and not an Eagles also which doesn't help.

But it is an Eagles song! The fantastic oohs and ah-ha's showcase the Eagles unique harmonies. I love the way the song starts with the DA-DA, DA-DA guitar chords. Joe's vocals are as good as he gets. Did I read here somewhere (from Mike, I think) that this vocal is the highest Joe ever wrote for himself? When the song reaches the point of that high note you are rooting for Joe to hit it, and he always does! The guitar solo is excellent and the gritty lyrics achieve their goal of making you feel how hard city life is.

On the other hand, King of Hollywood has that repetitive guitar work throughout so that after awhile it gets boring. I hate Glenn's vocals on this song, he's practically talking instead of singing, which leads to the fact that the song isn't very melodic. Granted, there is some good guitar work, but the song seems so long that it takes forever to get to it. Yes, it does a good job of depicting the seedy world of Hollywood, but I don't like "seedy" and I don't like feeling like I have to take a shower after I listen to a song.

The opinions on King Of Hollywood are interesting. I understand them, but I don't really get the 'ick' factor when I think about the song itself, because the song is criticising this kind of power play and exploitation. The "King" is the only one who comes off as pathetic and dirty - not the women.

Having said that, I might surprise a few people here (including myself), when I cast my vote for that very song - King Of Hollywood. I love it, but I think the remaining songs - bar Those Shoes, which is immune - are probably slightly superior. I absolutely adore In The City. The guitar work is incredible, as are the harmonies - I love Joe's raw vocals. It seriously rocks live, and it gets me going every time I hear it. That last minute or so of the song is on another level. I can't bring myself to vote for it right now, not even to save King Of Hollywood.

As far as anyone hating these song, I must have missed something. I don't recall anyone saying that they hated either of them. It's just that we're at that time in the game where everything left is a good song. But something has to go, so people have to vote off songs even if they like them.

I have to say, to those of you who consider "King Of Hollywood" sexy - why??? The "King of Hollywood" is a repulsive human being, and his "come-ons" alternate between veiled threats and rewards for prostitution. Not exactly a turn on.

Soda, I really meant that the performance of KOH was what I find sexy. Not the man himself! Ick!

Troub-I wish I could talk like you. You are very eloquent and spot on.

Willie, you silly girl! :hilarious:

And now to continue on. Sorry I missed all the mess, but glad I get another chance for this round!

Another thought about KOH. I don't dwell on the subject matter of a song. It's the voices and the music that first tell me whether to like a song or not. But that's just me. Everyone's different.

So, for this round, I vote for I Can't Tell You Why.

Usually, by now, I know what song "I" want to win. However, I'm at a point in the game where I like and appreciate all the songs for different reasons.

ITC is immune, so I can't vote for it, even if I wanted to. However, I've always loved this song! "somewhere out on that horizon"... I just love it! Maybe because I'm a city girl, IDK.

ICTYW - No matter how many times I've hear it, those first opening notes of the song reach my soul. They take me back to my youth and hearing that song. It's so smokey and emotional. The huskiness of the music contrasted with Tim's smooth voice... oh yeah, love it!

TLR - I forget how much I love this song, because it's fun to sing along with. It has nice flow.

HT - Great vocals a nice rocker

TS - This is another song that is sexy. The vocals are amazing! The story, the lyrics... one of my overall favorite Eagles songs.

I can not decide on a vote yet! Help! lol

I agree with most everything you said about each song, ltl. However, I do know what order I would like to see the songs finish in. I will say though that my least favorite of the remaining songs is In the City, but that is immune. My next least favorite is Those Shoes so that's what I'm hoping will go down this round. If that happens, I'm crossing my fingers that someone will make The Long Run immune next round instead of In the City because I think it is one of the top three songs on the album.

So now, take that, PM ... :steviesmack:

Right now, I'm pretty much going on how do I feel about song X today, or at this very minute.

TLR, HT and ITC are all very different, but all very good.

Right now, I'm turn between TLR and HT. I was very sad to see Those Shoes gone... I'm not sure I can handle ITC being gone as well.

I know this has been brought up before too... when all things are equal, we take other things into consideration... so right now, do I consider the fact that Seger and Souther co-wrote HT? Then again, didn't Joe have a non Eagle co-writer for ITC?

UGH!

Any solid agruements for any of the remaining three? What makes one better than an another? I guess it just comes down to personal preference, eh?

I vote for In The City. Simply my least favourite (by a small margin) out of the remaining songs. It's very, very difficult to separate them, although I would love to see The Long Run stay in at least another round. As well as being the title track of this album, I think it's a really important song in Eagles history. The fact that they have stood the test of time, despite going through some tough periods (not least while this song and album was being recorded) makes me happy. The lyrics speak volumes.

Great arguments here, ltlh. I totally agree with you on this. And when it comes down to separating these last 4 songs (including ICTYW, TBF), a song written by only the Eagles are going to be my top picks.

I base my decisions in this game purely on the music and lyrics of the song. I'd make myself crazy if I tried to base it on anything else. Now if you say that you like the songs equally and you need something else to base your decision on, then I guess I can understand taking other things into consideration. Fortunately I don't have that problem. I don't like any of them exactly the same. They are all on different levels.
