We have several threads where people talk about seeing Eagles tribute bands (or being in one) - I thought it might be handy to have a centralized thread where we list Eagles tribute bands so we can follow them and maybe check out their shows. These are the ones that have been mentioned in other threads (although I'm sure I'm missing some)

The Alter Eagles (http://altereaglesband.com/home.cfm) (Greg's band)
7 Bridges: The Ultimate Eagles Experience (http://www.7bridgesband.com/fr_home.cfm) (Keith's band)
Eaglemania (http://eaglemaniaband.wordpress.com/) (Jon and Frank's band - as reviewed by Dreamer here (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showpost.php?p=310225&postcount=178)[/URL])

One of These Nights (Canada) (http://www.myspace.com/oneofthesenightstributetotheeagles)
The Long Run (Los Angeles) (http://www.thelongrun.net/)
The Long Run (Colorado) (http://thelongruncolorado.com/)
Another Tequila Sunrise (http://www.eaglestributeband.com/)
Take It to the Limit (http://eaglesbranson.com/)
Hotel California (http://www.hotelcal.com/) (as reviewed by Dreamer here (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showthread.php?t=322), Stars here (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showpost.php?p=116227&postcount=40), cheryl here (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showpost.php?p=123614&postcount=78) and Molly here (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showpost.php?p=18331&postcount=191))*

*Now, there are several tribute bands called Hotel California, and Molly saw another one she reviewed here. (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showpost.php?p=118504&postcount=63)

So, what we can do is try to find others and maybe link to their official sites or tour schedules. I have linked to the official sites of those I could find.

One interesting thing PM noted in her review was the difference between a "tribute" band and a "cover" band. Which of those above do you think truly fit the label "tribute" in that they try to emulate the guys closely and which of them fall more into the "cover band" territory? I know Greg said his band is making an effort to imitate the Eagles in dress, for instance. I'm not trying to diss the bands that don't make that effort, but it's an interesting distinction.

I'm not sure it really matters much if these are cover or tribute bands. I think most of them call themselves tribute bands whether they really are or not. The Hotel California band that I saw did not try to emulate the real Eagles in terms of appearance, but they sure did musically. I like the idea of this thread to help us keep up with the show dates of various acts.

If they tried to emulate the voices and arrangements, I think that lifts them above your regular "cover band." Regardless, it sounds like they're really enjoyable. I'm going to be looking for 7 Bridges Road since they're based out of Tennessee, although apparently they aren't playing near here anytime soon!

PM, I too have seen Heartache Tonight! I want to say it was last fall... but it could have been even longer than that. I thought they were okay, but when I saw them... they played a TON of solo material. I know the Eagles themselves do it too...but I was hoping for more Eagles songs.

I can't recall if they played ICTYW... but for some reason, I thought they did. Wow, maybe it was longer than I thought!

As far as cover vs. tribute... I never gave it much thought... but I totally get was PM is saying. I've seen American English, which is a Beatles Tribute band and they dress and act like them. Complete w/accents, which they don't really have. They are really, really good! I wonder if anyone here has seen them.

So yes, I guess this band would be more "cover band" , paying tribute to the Eagles.

A few weeks ago I went to see Hotel California - The Australian Eagles Experience. This is the link to their site: http://www.hotelcalifornia.com.au/eagles-bio.html.
As far as I can tell they aren't one of the bands listed above. They seem to be a cross between a tribute & a cover band. They introduced the members as the individual Eagle that they portrayed & at the end gave the name of each member & the part that they played, ie." David Gray as Don Henley". He actually had Glenn's hairstyle from the seventies. The guy who played Timothy had on a bad wig (and I don't mean bad in a good way). The others didn't try to immitate the hairstyles of any of the other guys. I guess that they tried to dress in the seventies style, but none of them were wearing anything that looked to me like any of the outfits that the Eagles actually wore.

The band did a good job. I enjoyed the show. I didn't think that any of the voices sounded that similar to the Eagles' voices though. At the beginning of the show they showed video clips of 4 songs from the 1976 Houston video & the various members sang as Don, Glenn or Randy in sync with the video presentation.

Here's what really bugged me. I read that the band had been together for 12 years. Don't you think that in all that time someone would have told them that Glenn's name is not pronounced Fray & - brace yourself Willie - Timothy's name is not Smith!? :-x

All in all it was a good evening's entertainment.

Well, maybe I'm wrong. As I said, I was basing my statement on other 'tributes' I've seen. I thought tributing meant emulating in every way and that's why I thought of Heartache Tonight more as a cover band. They were great musicians, played the Eagles songs very similar to the original recordings, but didn't try to look like the Eagles, act like the Eagles, or sound like the Eagles, but rather used their own vocal interpretations. To try to explain further just go to their site (listed above in Soda's post #1) and listen to the song Heartache Tonight. They have a quote by Eddie Money saying "I thought I was listening to the Eagles". Really? C'mon Eddie.

To me a 'cover' band plays songs by a variety of artists. If they are only playing the songs of one artist then I consider it a tribute band.

Every time I come to this board I appreciate it more and more. In this case, I'm reading in this thread the exact thoughts I had when my brother first approached me with the idea to form an Eagles Tribute.

First - The music is everything! And that starts with the vocals. If you don't play the songs as close to the exact CD sound as possible, then you are a cover band (which is fine, just not what we were going for.)
Second - Come as close to the look and feel of the Eagles live show as possible within the constraints of #1 above.

We had several meetings and fought through many issues that needed to be decided:

What era are we portraying, both musically and visually? We decided we'd play all of the great hits, ESPECIALLY the ones the Eagles themselves don't play much any more if at all. After that, we'd do selected solo tunes, but never to the detriment of the core hits. We started out with the 90's blazers, cleancut look as shown here:
413

Now we're trying the 70's/retro look. No pics of that yet, but we're playing New Orleans this weekend and should have some good ones from there.

Other questions:

Are we "acting" in the roles, a la "Beatlemania" or just doing our best to look and sound like the Eagles while still playing as ourselves? This is the toughest question, and we constantly update our arguments. We want to provide the greatest experience for the Eagles fans, but we also don't want to come off cheesy. I saw one of the reviews here mention a really bad wig on the bass player, for example. We'd rather not dress up at all than have that happen. We ultimately decided that we would look the roles of the singer and/or player we were "covering" but still go by our actual names on stage. We tell back stories of songs and share interesting insights, but we don't call each other by the Eagles' names.
How strict are we staying to the singer/player roles? This one was made easier by the fact that it is virtually impossible to find someone who can sing like Don Henley, much less one who can ALSO play the drums. We are blessed to have my brother, Todd, who has an amazing voice and actually sounds a lot like Don Henley, AND hits all of his high notes pretty much spot on. However, he plays decent guitar but has no drum skill at all. We ultimately decided to re-create the best SOUND first, with the best voice singing each Eagles' songs, and the best musicians playing each lead or rhythm part. I sing all the Glenn songs, Todd sings the Don, even thought we're both out front for pretty much the whole show.
There were lots of other things, but those were the biggies, and I've already gone WAY long on this post.

Looking at it now, we are probably not a pure "tribute" band, in that we don't act the roles exactly. I would definitely say we are a reverence band, though, because we spend hours working to perfect every note as close to the original cd as possible. Maybe a cross between the two?

One last thought on that, I've seen one very successful Eagles "tribute" band live-I sought them out back when we were first starting so I could see how they did things, thinking it would help us with decisions on our own show. They didn't try to totally re-create the original CD sound, which was fine I guess. But I was appalled to hear MASSIVE amounts of vocal processing and what I'm positive were pre-recorded backing vocal tracks. More than once I saw a player turn away from his mike yet the vocal part he was "singing" stayed steady and strong throughout. Most people wouldn't even notice or care- even my friend who I thought would know better came out of the concert and raved about how amazing their harmonies sounded!

My point is that we decided up front that if we couldn't pull off the vocals with our own voices - no harmonizers, tracks, etc, then we would find some other band to pay tribute to.

I saw on the 7Bridges site that they're committed to the same thing, to which I say, "Right on brothers!"

OK, I'm climbing off the soapbax now. Sorry for the length, but as you can tell we are VERY passionate about this music and our role in sharing it with other Eagles fans.

I'm very interested to hear your takes on the various decisions "tributes" have to make.

Greg

Very informative and never mind the length, lol. The more you tell us, the more insight some of us can give you.

Regarding 7Bridges, while Jason normally does the Frey parts, he also does an excellent Walsh, which I didn't see at the shows I attended. To get the little moves down helps a lot but it's the sound that really matters to a lot of people. And when you nail the exact sound for the song, you've made the big time, so to speak.

Most of us go to the trib shows wanting to hear the songs that got the band started, like I like to hear Bernie and Randy's songs and a lot of the songs that have been dropped from the set list from their beginnings. Not being all that observant or particular, it matters little to me if you all are dressed in suits and ties or t-shirts and jeans. The show is what I'm there for, the music and the vocals and the memories it evokes.

BTW, the link didn't work for me:-(. But we sure like to read whatever you post. Sorry to be so long-winded..........

Oops, I lied. The link does work, nice pic, which one are you:hilarious:?

Regarding cover vs. tribute bands, I tend to agree with FP that if a band is doing nothing but the songs from one band then I consider them a tribute band. Just my two cents.

Greg, I appreciate your post and sharing with us the process and decisions that bands have to work through.

The only Eagles tribute band I've seen is one of the Hotel California bands. Soda linked to my review of that show in her first post in this thread. However, I will repeat a few observations. Keep in mind this is just one opinion, and it comes from a very hardcore Eagles fans. Hope you're not sorry you asked after reading this.

First of all, I'll give you what I thought were the positive things about the guys I saw:

1. The members of the band didn't look anything like Glenn, Don, Joe, Timothy, or Felder, Randy, and Bernie. Therefore, I appreciated the fact that they didn't even attempt to emulate their appearance. As GlennLover said, I'd rather the band not try to look like the Eagles rather than do a really bad job.

2. The band played a 20-song set in a show that lasted approximately two hours. I had figured they would play about 45 minutes to an hour, so I was very pleasantly surprised at the length of the show.

3. Most of the songs, they stayed true to, which I also appreciated. You are right in that I also loved hearing a few songs that I will probably never get to see the Eagles play live such as Those Shoes, Victim of Love, James Dean, and The Best of My Love (although I did get to see this one a few weeks ago in Louisville, so you never know).

Now, for the things that I wasn't impressed with ...

1. A few songs had altered arrangements, which I didn't care for. This is just my opinion, but I'd much rather them stay true to the original song.

2. The band did not get all of their Eagles' facts correct. I was appalled to hear them introduce Lyin' Eyes as the only song the Eagles ever won a grammy for (see - it's been over 3 years since I saw them and this is one of the main things I remember). Now, admittedly, as I said earlier, I am very hardcore so I may be more sensitive than the average person in the audience. However, I feel strongly about this - if you are going to have a complete show centered around a single band, then do your homework and get your facts right! It's not that hard - all you have to do is come to a sight like this where hardcores hang out and you can learn a lot. Kudos to you for recognizing this, Greg!!!

3. The worst of all - when I came home, I checked out their website and to my horror discovered that Glenn's name is spelled 'Glen' throughout the site. I even sent them a couple of emails asking them to correct this, and to this day, it it still incorrect. To this hardcore, that is inexcuseable. I just think if you are going to put the time and effort into forming a whole band to pay tribute to another one, then you should take care of the small stuff too - it matters.

Greg, I agree with Dreamer that the music is paramount. However, if the members can dress like the Eagles & pull it off, and judging by your picture you can , that's an added bonus.

Dreamer, it sounds like we saw the same band. Your post reminded me. They got some facts wrong about the writing of Lyin' Eyes & the year that one of their hits was released (I forget which one). It's just a turn off to those who are diehard Eagles fans. It wouldn't be that difficult to get those facts right.

Interesting post, Greg! Don't worry - that's not terribly long at all.

The only "tribute" I've ever seen is all the folks dressed up and singing like Stevie Nicks at the Night of 1000 Stevies (http://www.mothernyc.com/stevie/). Not quite the same. lol

For me, the ideal tribute band would emulate the vocal stylings and arrangements of the Eagles, and try to capture the mood by dressing up a bit. If you can't do both, then the sound is more important - but doing both puts you ahead of the game as it appears most Eagles tribute bands only half-heartedly attempt that, if at all.

I do appreciate it when tribute bands play songs the Eagles don't normally play. They have so many songs - even hits - they no longer do live or have never done at all. It's a real treat, especially for hardcores, to hear a deep cut or lesser known Eagles song getting played. Solo stuff is OK in moderation but I wouldn't want the solo numbers to outweigh the Eagles songs.

And yes, as Dreamer says, it's very annoying when the facts are not quite right or, even worse, they misspell or mispronounce the guys' names!

I'm eager to see one - which is one reason I started this thread. If one comes Memphis way, I want to know about it! If you guys come even within a couple hours, I'll drive on over!

Well, soda, that is exactly how we approach it.

One big reason we picked the Eagles is because they are long on music and vocal performance and short on theatrics and costumes. We're friends with other tributes and we cringe when we see those poor guys trot on stage with silly costumes and bad wigs.

I'm the second from the right in the picture, with the sunglasses. My brother, Todd is next to me on the end. We sing most of the songs (Todd sings DH, I sing GF).

I don't know how many of you are on Facebook (it seems everyone is these days), but you can see all kinds of pictures, videos, etc on:

I have not been able to see a tribute band yet, tho I have tried in August with PM, but you all know how that turned out on the trip there. So I'm not much help I'm afraid.

I do have a question, and it might be a really dumb one and might have already been answered and I've missed it. I'm not real clear on the difference in a tribute band and a cover band?

BTW--Just sent a friend request to you guys on FB Greg! Anxious to take a look, well that is if you accept it. :)

I think that is a very good question. We wetn round and round about what to call it, too. After much research and "discussion," we decided to define it this way:

Cover Band - Any band that plays other bands' music
Eagles Cover Band - Any band that plays Eagles music exclusively, using their own versions, sometimes playing it like the original, sometimes not, no attempt to match the look or feel of the original band experience.
Reverence Band - I've only seen this term used in a few places, but I like it. It seems to mean a group that plays a band's music exactly as it was recorded, emulating the sound as closely as possible to the original.
Tribute Band - A reverence band that also dresses and looks the part, re-reating the look and feel of the original band's performance as well as the music.

Of course this doesn't cover "tribute albums/cds" where popular artists do their own covers of a band's songs (The country artists' Eagles Tribute CD for example.) You can see that it is pretty much a moving target.

There is a group called "Classic Albums Live" that picks a great album and plays it start to finish exactly as recorded, without even attempting to look at all like the original act. I've heard they are awesome, though I haven't been able to catch one of their shows yet. I love the idea, though. I saw Steely Dan do the same thing last year in NYC when they did the Aja album start to finish, then closed the concert with several of their other favorites.

As a final note, some people say any band that doesn't contain at least 3/4 of the original members is a tribute. That makes it tough for bands like the Eagles and Chicago, of course, since they both had multiple member changes over the years. I've heard many a loud, drink-fueled argument on that topic!

G
PS We'll definitely accept FB friendship with anyone who is an Eagles fan!

You mention Classic Albums Live. Something like this (it may even be this act) is going to perform the entirety of Dire Straits' Brothers In Arms in Sydney soon (plus other Dire Straits classics). I seriously thought of going but I decided against it. I think no matter how well it was done I would find fault with it. As people here are well aware, I am a Dire Straits tragic.

Greg, I have seen "ClassicAlbums Live" do Hotel California. During the first half of the show they play the songs, in order, from the album & then do other Eagles' hits in the second half. I enjoyed them immensely, as did the rest of the audience. They were true to the original recordings & their voices sounded very similiar to the Eagles'. As you stated, they made no attempt to look or dress like the Eagles. It was all about the sound. They even had a woman in the band, LOL. I enjoyed them much more than "Hotel California, The Eagles Experience." It has to be about the music first. I would love to hear your band, as it is obvious that putting the music first is what your band is all about.

Setlist:
Take It Easy
Rocky Mountain Way
Heartache Tonight
Lyin Eyes
Those Shoes
One of These Nights
Smugglers Blues
Heart of the Matter
Peaceful Easy Feeling
Already Gone
Seven Bridges Road
Hotel California
Tequila Sunrise
I Can't Tell You Why
Life in the Fast Lane
Witchy Woman

Well, soda, that is exactly how we approach it.

Good deal!

I have to say, part of what informs my ideal tribute band is the one my cousin and her wife are in - Ladysmith. It's all female but even so, they do their best to recreate the members of Aerosmith's outfits and personas (see their official site (http://www.ladysmithrocks.com/fr_home.cfm)) as well as their sound. For them, that's part of the fun. (Just putting in a quick plug! lol)

To make the above somewhat Eagles-related, Leslie ("Eve Tyler") took me to the Sunset Grill back a few years ago and convinced them to name one of their smoothies "The Ladysmith."

I friended you on FB, G. You guys look cool!

I compared the setlist that Cheryl posted to what I saw and it looks like they changed up 3 or 4 songs. Cheryl got:

Also, here is a link to a Youtube video of 7 bridges road from the friday Extra Concert we did back in the spring. The video on FB uses clips from this concert, but this fan posted the entire song video shot from her seat. It sounds pretty good considering it was shot with a handheld from the audience.

Thanks for the appreciation. If folks here say that, it is high praise indeed.

We LOVE doing 7 Bridges. For one thing, it's the only song that all 5 singers do together with little or no instruments. We usually start off the show with it, then go right into Life in the Fast Lane with no talking to sort of get the show off with a bang and get everyone pumped up right from the start! :partytime:

I tell you there is nothing better than going on stage knowing that practically every song we're going to play is a great song and usually somebody's favorite! We could literally play for 4 hours straight and never play a "bathroom break" song! :hilarious:

Last evening I saw The Long Run (Co.). It was a lot of fun, and they sounded awesome! Okay, their voices weren't the greatest, but their instruments sounded spot on. I especially liked the guy who did Joe's guitar parts. The best part of the concert was that they played a lot of songs that the real Eagles never play anymore! Hey Soda!

Thanks for starting this thread on here! Could you please edit the first post to correct our name to 7 Bridges : The Ultimate EAGLES Experience? Thank you very much!

We have a few vids up on YouTube (that haven't been ravaged by Warner-Chappell!) that you can check out. There is also an audio sampler on our website. (you have to click play at the bottom of the screen to start the player.)

Feel free to check out our TOUR DATES page as well to see where we'll be performing! We'd love to get some REAL Eagles fans out to our shows!

Take It Easy,
Keith

I'm happy to remove the "Road" - sorry about adding the extra word; force of habit, I guess! I just corrected it to "7 Bridges." (I'm assuming the little advertisement tag line after the colon isn't a part of your band's name.)

I've watched a couple of the videos. You guys sound great!

The "after the colon" part is also part of our name. We've had to correct several promoters, advertisers, etc. about that since we started.

Thanks for making me feel so welcome!

Hello Members of The Border!

I've been lurking but unable to post for a long time, as I forgot my login and couldn't figure out how to reset! And I work in technology, lol.

Anyway, I seemed to remember somebody from the middle of the country saying they wanted to see us if we played there, and we are flying to Iowa next week for a couple of shows. Yes, we live in Florida, and yes it is late December in Iowa. Let's just say when our agent talked us into it last summer none of us even considered how cold it would be!

So if you are near Des Moines or Tama, come out and see us. The Des Moines concert is cheap and I think the one in Tama is in a Casino and free.

Either way, let me know if you are coming and we'll meet up!

Dec 28 - The Vaudeville Mews, Des Moines. Iowa
Dec 29 - Meskwaki Casino, Tama, Iowa

Cheers,

Greg

Good to hear from you again, Greg. I'm in Virginia so I'm afraid Des Moines won't work for me. But, if you all ever play anywhere in Virginia, I'd love to make it to a show so be sure to keep us posted with the band's schedule.

Great show at a Casino in Tama, outside of Des Moines. Several people came all the way out, booked the casino hotel for the night just to hear the show.

It's amazing how many people the Aeagles have touched with their music.

Our agent is finalizing the summer schedule, so I'll let you know when we make it your way.

Cheers,

Here's a relatively new, FANTASTIC Eagles tribute band -- Eaglemania (www.eaglemaniaband.com). Lead singer sounds just like Don Henley.

Based in the Northeast, but active all over. Video with good example of the band here (http://vimeo.com/58752300).

Have any of you come to see us? So happy I found this board.

Welcome, Jon! I added your band to the list. Nice site and video! You guys sound great! It's an unusual choice not to have one vocalist per Eagle (ie, one guy singing all of Glenn's vocals, one guy singing all of Don's, etc) but whatever works.

Hi All,
I'm new to this forum. I want to say hi and also mention my Eagles tribute band called EagleMania. We are based out of New Jersey. We don't make any effort to look like the Eagles but we did spend about a year putting this band together. It was very difficult finding the right blend of voices as well as finding musicians competent enough to play and sing these parts as close as possible to the record. It was quite an undertaking, but the payoff has been well worth it. We play to sold out crowds in theaters, outdoor concerts, casinos and large clubs. The most amazing thing I find about The Eagles is the caliber of their catalog of songs. We are challenged every night by which great song we have to LEAVE out of the set list because they have so many amazing songs that we can't possibly do them all in a two hour show.

I invite you all to check out our website: www.eaglemaniaband.com or check us out on Facebook as EagleMania band.

Best,

Frank

7 Bridges was actually pretty good. I felt bad for them, halfway through the third song, an ambulance pulled up right near the stage. I think someone beside the building with the stage or behind it must have fallen, they left the ambulance with the 'lifting boards' like they use in the NFL when someone has a neck injury, then when I saw the stretcher, the person on it was strapped tightly and in many places, including the head. Then the thing had to back out and the people in line for the deep fried moon pies and deep fried peanut butter fudge didn't seem to want to move out of the way. It was all very distracting for a few songs.

They have a different approach than our guys, they started with HT, then VOL, then LBG, if I remember correctly. Then they slowed it down a bit before picking back up. I didn't stay for the whole thing, they started very late and I had to drive 1.5 hours back.

Very cool, VA! When the Stone Eagles were together we'd almost always start with Take It Easy. Gets everyone in the right mood. Also most of the acoustic-y stuff was towards the front of the setlist. HC was always the closer.

I just checked their website to see if they are coming to Virginia anytime soon, and it turns out that they have 2 dates scheduled in October. However, they are the dates that I will be in Memphis visiting Soda and Houston Baby and preparing to see the real deal on 10/14. I've seen the Illegal Eagles twice now, they repeated the same tour for a good while so it was the same both times. They stuck to the tried and tested Eagles songs (basically the singles from Eagles-HFO, How Long, BOS, RWM and LBG) which is fair enough, but a part of me wishes they'd have done something more obscure, it would have been great for them to whip the odd random track from OTB or something, but it was a great two evenings none the less. The second time around they did a duet version of LWKUA, which was pretty impressive. They have a new tour now called Heaven Heats Up (I think!). Not sure what's on it but I expect more LROOE stuff at least. Aiming to see them before Christmas, but just as they've moved into Northern England on it, I've moved South

Another one I've been checking out on YouTube is the Dutch Eagles. They look really good and have a DVD out worldwide from what I can gather, 20+ songs I think, including some lesser heard tracks. Also quite cool as it's performed live in this park sort of thing with a pond between them and the audience, a really suitable environment to hear some Eagles tracks belted out :headbang:

Just a few questions for seasoned tribute attenders: what's the most obscure track you've heard at a show and which band were the most prolific for delving into forgotten tracks?

Ive always been a dreamer
09-30-2013, 11:49 AM
tlr - The only tribute band I've seen is Hotel California. They were pretty good as well. The tracks that I was surprised to hear were James Dean, Those Shoes, Glenn's Smuggler's Blues, and Joe's All Night Long (especially since this was the closer in the encore). Here is a review I wrote about the show at the time ...

The last time we saw the Alter Eagles, some of their equipment didn't turn up so they had to play the first part of the set without any mikes/amps and ask the crowd not to chat too much. They were still really good and great value with tickets a tenth the price of tickets for the real thing.

It was an awesome show. I really enjoyed it. They played a lot of Eagles songs before the show started. So it was fun to hear a lot of Eagles songs.

Its funny. The guy who sang all of Don's song never went to the drums. He played the guitar majority of the night. Actually rhythm guitar. It was interesting that the drummer and one of the lead guitarist shared Glenn songs. But the lead guitarist sang majority of them. He also sang Joe's songs. And the bass player only sang one Timothy song(LWKUA)

They would show clips from different special. A few videos from Farewell 1, HFO and a 70s music show.

They had an amazing 27 year old playing all the leads. He was amazing.

Here's the songlist for that night.
Hotel California
The Long Run
One of These Nights
Life’s Been Good
Love Will Keep Us Alive
Already Gone
Lyin’ Eyes
Peaceful Easy Feeling
James Dean
No More Walks in the Wood(I think this was a beautiful arrangement they did)
Hole in the World
Take It to the Limit
Heartache Tonight
Rocky Mountain Way
Tequila Sunrise
Witchy Woman
Life in The Fast Lane
Take It Easy
Best of My Life
I Dreamed There Was No War
No More Cloudy Days
How Long (I think they sung this song)

When I come back to Branson next year, I will definitely see this show again.

Sounds like a great tracklist. How similar were their voices/playing to the real thing. Obviously it must be hard to get someone who can sing like Don Henley while also playing drums but if they can approximate the whole sound of the band, they're doing grreat.

The guy who sang all of Don's songs didn't really sound like him, but he had a great voice. It was kinda close. Now The lead guitarist who shared Glenn's song with the drummer sounded more like Joe, but of course he did sing all of Joe's songs.

I think the bass player was the closest of sounding like the guys. He sounded like Timothy.

They are some really talented guys. I would definitely see their show again next year.

OT. The bass player and the drummer is also in the Journey tribute show. Bass player is the lead guitarist in that band. He can play a mean guitar. I saw that show last night. The lead singer is a former American Idol contestant. Now the lead singer sounds like Steve Perry.

Don't go with expectations too high I guess. It's just for fun. As long as it's not too expensive. I must admit that when I saw the Alter Eagles at the beginning of the year, I seriously doubted I would ever spend 10x the price to see the real Eagles again (in a huge arena) when I could see these guys locally in a small club. They cover pretty much all of the UK (and northern bits of the Republic of Ireland) and apparently a certain Jack Tempchin has said nice things about them once! I have an interesting story. I'm kinda paraphrasing it because I could be saying it wrong.

SO I went to see Take It to the Limit: An Tribute to the Eagles show a few weeks ago. Somebody asked(not at my show) if the Eagles seen their show. The lead singer said no, but their road manager was at one of the shows and had Don listening to the show on his phone. Don loved the show and the guy said that Don would send them some stuff. And sure enough Don (or I guess the people working for the Eagles) send them stuff 2 weeks later. I got a picture of the stuff they send.

It would be super-cool to see a real tribute band where they had some nice eye candy, you know? Finding the cutie-pies out there who sound great and look good! There's a lot of great cover bands but doing a tribute is a lot more work; for example, in Pink Floyd fandom a lot of bands do the tribute thing by recreating the staging of Floyd shows and the costuming (so to speak), but I have yet to see one where they've got a young David Gilmour lookalike, more's the pity.

Went to see Talon tonight (well, last night now!). They were absolutely immense. I'll do a full write up in the morning but I'll say this now - they are as close to the Eagles as you are ever likely to get. As far as a tribute band can go, they are perfect.

12-22-2013, 07:04 PM
Alrighty then, here's my review for Talon.

The venue was the Robin 2 in Bilston, Staffordshire; essentially from what I can gather an old ex-nightclub, with capacity for 700 standing (there was probably 500~ in for Talon), needless to say I was near the front!

Anyway, it all started with Silent Spring as walk-on music followed by Take It Easy, with Silver Dagger as an intro :yay: There are seven members altogether, usually one bassist, one drummer, three guitarists, and then a mixture of additional guitars, steel pedal, keyboards and percussion. TIE led into In the City, followed by One of These Nights. They then moved onto a delightful surprise by doing The Last Resort, which they absolutely nailed perfectly. This was followed by three more relative surprises: One Day at a Time, The Girl from Yesterday and Sad Cafe. Boys of Summer followed next (with the crowd in full voice!), then Funk #49. That all in all took about 50 minutes. After a half-hour break they came back on to the tune of the acoustic HFO Hotel Cali prelude, perform doing HC itself - like TLR they got it spot on and the duelling guitars were in fine sound. Next up came I Can't Tell You Why, New York Minute and Peaceful Easy Feeling, then Take It to the Limit in Meisner's original key (E minor I think?), with, like BOS, a fair amount of crowd participation! After that came a piano / steel pedal arrangement of Love Will Keep Us Alive, and fair play to them for making something decent out of what is a horribly slow, boring song (I'm so sorry TBS fans!) ;) Next up came Lyin' Eyes (with the biggest audience participation of the evening), Witchy Woman and Life in the Fast Lane. Heartache Tonight completed the main show. With the encore came Life's Been Good, finished by Desperado. It finished at quarter to midnight, in just enough time for a quick run back to the tram station for the last tram of the night!

Overall, they were absolutely brilliant. The extra members add a new dimension to it, like putting steel pedal onto TIE and PEF, or mandolin into LE. Their four-part harmony is very impressive too. However, there were also a few drawbacks for me. Without wishing to attack individuals personally, their lead guitarist was far, far, far too akin to Joe Walsh (especially) in his performance - it's great to model your playing on someone, but copying little personal things about that artist is a bit off-putting, like shouting 'God you're so nice' (I think) in Funk #49, or calling TITTL 'the credit card song'. Was really frustrating by LBG. They also neglected the whole of OTB and LROOE, as well as only doing one from Desperado, and missing out staples like Tequila Sunrise, BOML and in particular NKIT.

I'd also like to say a special thanks to the bloke, though I'll doubt he'll ever see this, who got quite drunk and spent the break talking to me about heavy metal and how admirable it was that I went to a concert on my own. Thanks man!

Thanks for the review. Some friends told me they'd seen Talon a few years ago and they were good. I've looked at their tour schedule and I'm tempted by Acoustic Talon as there is a wider selection of songs - CSN&Y, James Taylor and such. They're playing in a pub on a Cornish beach in March and I like the idea of that.

As for repeating the Eagles jokes - c'mon, it's bad enough we have to listen to the REAL Eagles repeat the jokes, we don't want to hear tribute bands repeating them too! lol

Playing some 'catch-up' here on the board and just read your review, tlr. Thanks for the write-up and glad you enjoyed the show. Unless the band is doing a full-fledged tribute show, I would personally prefer that they just focus on replicating the sound of the band.

I was flipping through the TV channels and came upon an episode of Gene Simmons and his wife getting 11 hours of plastic surgery and I couldn't look away, what a train wreck. Anywaaaayy...the channel was AXS TV, and they have a show called "Greatest Tribute Bands." The third season starts on Jan. 6 and they will be doing the Eagles this season! I don't know which cover/tribute band it will be or the date. I have seen this show once and they actually broadcast it live, which is cool. I will let you know when it will be the Eagles' night!

I just realized I have this channel so I'll check it out. Thanks

Hmmm, there's got to be a way for you guys to see it online, if not live. If I had an old timey vcr machine I would record it for you! Is it possible to record shows to blue ray or dvd? I have those....

I am looking forward to hearing The Long Run - earlier in this thread was posted that they are good. The only tribute band I have ever seen was Super Diamond, who cover Neil Diamond. The singer doesn't attempt to look like Neil, but his voice is eerily spot on - if you close your eyes it sounds EXACTLY like Neil Diamond - it's really weird. So, with this as my frame of reference, I watched the Prince tribute by Purple Reign last night on this show, and I didn't think the guy's voice sounded very similar at all to Prince's, it was not impressive. I can't wait to see if these Long Run guys sound like our guys!

Quick note, I don't want to get too far off topic on this thread. Just watched Bella Donna's tribute to Stevie Nicks on this show. The band and backup singers were great. "Stevie" looked a lot like Stevie, but didn't sound much like her. I think my expectations for these tribute bands may be too high. Recalibrating before I see the tribute to the Eagles - lowering my expectations.

The Eagles tribute by The Long Run is on tonight live at 8 PST/ 11 EST on AXS TV. Considering I saw the real deal 3 nights ago, pretty sure I'm not going to enjoy this - unfortunate timing. There is a Joe Walsh special on the same channel two hours prior - Guitar Center Sessions. A full hour of Joe!

The guy who sung Don's parts is actually quite good, very good I thought.
The two guitar players did a good job on the HC outro.
This is funny - the bass player is about 6'5" tall with blond hair, (and apparently, his uncle is Les Paul.) Think of Richard Branson. I will just say that ICTYW is a difficult song to sing well and the visual was so out of whack...I'll just leave it at that.
There was so much wrong with the singing on Glenn's parts, I'll leave it at that. Some of the harmonies started to sound nice, then all of a sudden they're not even singing it the right way, like, they've got the tune wrong. Makes you realize how difficult some of the Eagles' harmonies are. No more of this show for me. I just don't get the whole tribute band thing.

Yeah - I see what you mean, MC. I'm not overly impressed with this particular tribute band either. However, I did enjoy the one I saw called Hotel California. Tribute bands are, obviously, not as good as the real thing, but I do think there are some good ones out there that get the band's sound down pretty well that are worth seeing, especially given the fact that you get to hear some awesome music at a bargain price. It can help with PEW if you know you won't be seeing the real thing anytime in the foreseeable future.

Besides playing in an Eagles Tribute band I LOVE watching good tribute bands perform. I haven't enjoyed much of the AXS TV show, and that is not sour grapes. Though I must admit I'm disappointed they didn't select us for the show-here is the video we sent to them last year:

http://www.altereaglesband.com

With a great Don Henley vocalist on the drums, I think we've got a pretty authentic look and sound.

Our agent said they are all booked by the same agent out of So Cal and he only uses his bands, which is why we didn't even get considered.

I guess they can get away with the show title, since it's all subjective, but I've seen way better bands than just about all of the tributes they've featured. I liked the Pink Floyd guys last year, and the Beatles Tribute was great. Stevie Nicks, Eagles, Garth Brooks, not so much.

To each his own I guess.

Good point, though I admit I could understand your comments having watched the entire show.

We critique every one of our shows, and usually record video and audio so we can go back and fine tune what's not working. Every band is different as to their philosophy and approach. Our priorities are:

1. Vocals and instruments as close to the original recording as possible
2. Right guy singing/playing the parts (Drummer singing Don Henley, Front left guitarist singing Glenn Frey).
3. Look and feel of an Eagles Live Performance - Staging, Clothing, Hairstyles

We tried having our Don Henley vocalist up front, but last year we moved him back to the drums and have never regretted it.

Too bad the producers of the show didn't use a different criteria for choosing the bands in the shows. I didn't watch this, but apparently, there are much better tribute bands for many of the acts that could have been selected. Having mediocre bands on the show gives all tribute bands a bad name since most folks would assume the best bands would be represented.

Went to see the Illegal Eagles in High Wycombe last week, but have been a bit too snowed under lately to do a proper report for you guys. It will follow soon I promise! I will say this though, their set list is as close to perfection as I think is possible (there were some absolutely cracking inclusions), and one part of it was so well done it's the most emotional I think I've ever been at a gig. For any UK residents on here (or Russians) I strongly recommend parting with 25 quid to see them.

So I saw Desert Highway on Long Island last night.

When I first got there I was waiting for my group to arrive and the bartender suggested I buy a drink before it gets real busy. I asked her what she meant and she said this band draws a crowd where it's wall to wall people! Now I was psyched!! I even talked to the wives and girlfriends of the band members who were surprised that they get such a turnout. I guess their following has been building.

They were really good. The only criticism is they played one too many Don Henley solo songs. I love all Don's solo work but they played 3 and they were an Eagles cover band. Ok one maybe two but that takes away from the vast category of the Eagles catalog.

They will be back around in a month. I would go see them again. Definitely a fun night out but of course couldn't hold a candle to the "real" band. :-)

So on Friday 07 March I went to see the Illegal Eagles at the Swan Theatre in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. It started at 7.30 in the same way it did when I last saw them a couple of years back - walking on music was Journey of the Sorcerer, followed by Take It Easy with Silver Dagger intro. It was really good to see one of them whip the banjo out for the outro, and even better to see them keep it on afterwards, meaning the next song was going to be something quite unusual. It was indeed: Midnight Flyer! (The first of a good few rare setlist choices that night.) Sadly there was no slide guitar outro (for me one of Glenn's more memorable guitaring contributions), but it was great to hear nonetheless. Next followed what they described as the first song they ever tried 18 years ago - Saturday Night, complete with mandolin. Both it and Tequila Sunrise which followed were excellently done. Next up was Peaceful Easy Feeling, then New Kid in Town, followed by Heart of the Matter. The make-up vocally of the band was quite odd as I seem to recall at least three of them covering Henley's vocals, however the bloke on this one was on top form and really got the emotion of the song correct. Next came Get Over It, One of These Nights and Witchy Woman, all of which were very nicely done. The first half was rounded off by two LROOE numbers: Busy being Fabulous and How Long.

All in all the first half took around an hour, and twenty minutes later they were back for another, opening with Long Road Out of Eden (which they absolutely nailed). At that point all bar two of them (one on keyboard, one stood next to him on electric guitar) left the stage as they did I Dreamed There Was No War. That was probably the highlight of the evening for me, the emotion of the song was spot on and it complements the complexity and emotion of LROOE well. I never thought I'd say this about a tribute band but it's one of very few times in my life I've been at a concert and thought 'this is absolutely perfect' - the lighting, the tempo, even the positions they stood in on stage for it was all faultless. Following that was the band intros as they walked back on stage, after which they played Lying Eyes, Take It to the Limit (to which the audience tried their best to hold the high note at the end to a very admirable level of success) and Desperado (much better suited to being in the middle of the concert as opposed to the final song). This was followed by yet another surprise inclusion - The Heat Is On, complete with saxophone. I have to be honest and say I don't really care for the song, but it certainly worked well in getting the audience animated (in a good way!). That was followed with Boys of Summer, Life in the Fast Lane and Rocky Mountain Way (with talkbox, another very commendable instrument use!). Heartache Tonight followed, and the show ended with Hotel California as an encore. I don't really like it as an ending song but naturally everyone loved it, and the duelling guitars were spot on. Journey of the Sorcerer was their walking off music, not that I heard much of it as I had to leg it for my train.

Overall I really liked them. There were some cracking inclusions there; Midnight Flyer, Saturday Night, IDTWNW and The Heat Is On the main examples. The lack of songs from The Long Run is obviously very highly commendable (;)); but sadly On the Border was somewhat forgotten again! Obviously some quite big staples are missing: The Long Run, I Can't Tell You Why and Life's Been Good being the first ones that come to mind, but in some ways I prefer to see the lesser songs. On the downside, sometimes their harmony was a bit average, and there seemed to be some very odd lyric changes / mistakes (like using the past tense of some words instead of the present tense etc), but I don't think anyone would really notice and I'm most likely being overly pedantic as I love the actual Eagles so much ;) There were also a couple of technical faults during the performance, but this is probably down to a combination of the theatre's own equipment and the fact it was the first night of the tour.

If anyone on here is in Britain and is thinking of going to see them I would recommend them. You might even get in the selfie they take before The Heat Is On! :D

Last year, I celebrated Glenn's birthday with him in Toronto - along with about 14,000 other people. This year the celebration was a couple of days late and in South Wales with just 200 people and Eagles tribute band, Talon. I'm gathering my thoughts.

They sounded great but there's something odd about sitting with a small crowd of grey-haired people listening to a group of musicians reproduce the music of my youth. There wasn't the buzz of knowing I was watching the real Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Bernie Leadon and they still have it. The best part was watching how it was all put together - being so close meant I could see fingers on the frets, who was singing harmony and so on and that's something I missed when sitting so far back in an arena. I was looking to see if anyone played a "B-bender" but instead they had someone on pedal steel.

The star of the show is their "Joe Walsh lookey-likey" who goes by the name of Tony Vegas. Great guitar playing and vocals that capture an essence of Joe. He also sang an impressive version of "Take it to the Limit" that was more Randy than Glenn.

Interesting setlist but with only one song from Desperado and none (or maybe one) from On the Border. Given my preference for early Eagles, that was a bit disappointing. Still, their LROOE was impressive.

Afterwards, my friends and I were trying to understand how they are able to make a living as a tribute band. A couple of years ago a local promoter had told my friend that Talon were one of the most expensive tribute bands that he'd booked - about £2,000 for a show. But they're a touring band with all the expenses that incurs. Instead of playing to 14,000 people with average ticket prices of close to £100, it's 200 people with tickets at £18.50. And they've been doing it for 17 years.

Coincidentally one of the Eagles tributes I follow on Facebook posted a picture of their B-bender today, however I can't recall if it was Talon or the Illegal Eagles. If you remember what I wrote last year about the guy who sings all of Don's song played guitar than going on drums. While this year, he played Gibson EDS-1275 guitar(double guitar) on HC and played guitar solos throughout the show. He was good. I was shocked. LOL

The Eagles tribute show was cool. The only complaints were that some of the singers didn't seem to know the songs too well lyrically. They had the lyrics on some monitors. And also sometimes some of them messed with the rhythm of the lyrics - like singing the lyric in the second verse with the rhythm of the first verse. Sometimes there were different lyrics. "Plough" in Waiting In The Weeds was "path", which was really weird. But this is stuff that probably doesn't bother an average concert-goer here in Finland!

The greatest surprise was the two encores: No More Walks In The Wood and Waiting In The Weeds. It was great that even the second half wasn't just a greatest hits show, although there were hits too. I think it was brave, since there probably weren't that many people in the audience who recognized NMWITW and WITW! I've said before that my dad is a Glenn fan too. He hasn't heard the LROOE album, and when WITW started I told him this one ís a fantastic song from the "new" album. He asked "a Glenn Frey song?". "Don Henley", I said, and he seemed a bit disappointed. I hope he liked the song though.:hilarious:

Like I said earlier, the first half of the concert consisted of the whole Desperado album. I was really waiting for Bitter Creek, and I was very disappointed, because it was the only song from that album that was in a different key! The original is in D, and this was in A, so it sounded very different. Also, the superb guitar riff before "an old man told me" was slightly different.

The harmonies were great and they mostly sang well. They played very well indeed. My only complaint about the playing is that a lot of the guitar solos were improvised. I would have loved to hear Glenn's solo in Certain Kind Of Fool, for example.

Oh, and they also had an accordion on a few songs. The harmonica line in Doolin-Dalton was played on the accordion, for example. Worked really well. I think it was on Saturday Night and WITW as well. Sounded fantastic.

The songs they played were:

Desperado album

Seven Bridges Road
Take It Easy
Life In The Fast Lane (a fantastic version!)
Love Will Keep Us Alive (I've never liked this song until now!)
Witchy Woman (would have loved to hear Glenn's solo)
Get Over It (they probably wanted some rockers in the set...But this worked. However, to me this one is much more a lyric song than a music song. Again, not sure if most people knew the lyrics, but a fast tempo in itself of course works live...)
New Kid In Town
Wasted Time (my father's wife loved this. Hadn't heard it before.)
One Of These Nights (Three semitones higher. Sounded a bit different at first. Some of the basslines in the chorus sounded a bit too high in this key...)
Already Gone
Hotel California (a FANTASTIC version)

Encores:

NMWITW
WITW

Jonny Come Lately
02-14-2015, 05:23 AM
Sounded like a good show! It must have been cool to see Desperado played live in full even with the changes to Bitter Creek. It was pretty brave to go for two LROOE songs as an encore, especially considering that neither of them was How Long (which is more likely to be recognised than most of the others as the Eagles played live in the 1970s).

One thing I did notice was that the ballads were spread out about a bit more than in a typical Eagles show - New Kid In Town and Wasted Time were played late in the set, while Love Will Keep Us Alive sits between the much more rocking LIFTL and Witchy Woman. The setlist for the HOTE concerts is determined by chronology for the first set, but if you look at most Eagles setlists over the years they've always tended to play the ballads or country/bluegrass songs first and then played the rockers (including the Joe songs) later. I even remember a video from the HC tour - can't remember offhand which song I was, think it might have been Midnight Flyer, where Glenn says something like 'it's great that you're happy to sit while we play 5 or 6 ballads at the start, now we'll get to the rock songs'. Definitely not word perfect but that was the essence of what he was saying. I don't think they're alone in this regard, look at the sequencing of Neil Young's Live Rust, for instance.

Natural Wonder: A Tribute to Stevie Wonder (https://www.facebook.com/NaturalWonderTribute) wowed audiences during its April 7 episode live from Los Angeles’ Whisky A Go-Go. On Tuesday, Eagles tribute On the Border (http://ultimateeaglestribute.com/)plays an expanded hour and a half episode.

The fella who sings and plays Randy's part in the American tribute band Hotel California is the son of songwriter Steve Young, who wrote "Seven Bridges Road."

Thanks for the insight Greg. I've no desire to see a tribute act, I guess you should just be sensitive to the reaction of your audience and respond accordingly, while retaining some integrity.

With the Eagles though, it's the music that is well known, rather than the personalities.

I found this a couple of days ago;
http://www.israbox.info/1146584570-tony-vegas-lifes-been-good-2015.html

It's a recording by Tony Vegas, who plays Joe in an Eagles Tribute act, playing some of Joe's Eagles tunes. I couldn't resist it.

He copies the performances rather than the performer, primarily from the Eagles dvds. The ballads aren't so bad but, believe it not, Tony don't rock like Joe does. :)

I saw him with Talon. Just like Joe, he's the one you watch but he's probably a better singer - he did a good job of "Take it to the Limit".

Indeed, I've seen Mr. Vegas with Talon. Fine singer and guitarist, but I wasn't keen at all on how he copied every little thing Joe did, it got increasingly annoying as the show progressed. Whether it was copying the 'God, that's so nice' (or whatever Joe says) in Funk #49, or saying his wife calls TITTL 'The Credit Card Song', he did it just like Walsh, Frey or whoever did on Farewell 1. If I wanted that, I'd go to an impersonator, not a tribute band.

Well - me, my sister, and my niece went up to Leesburg, VA to see Jon's band, Eaglemania, last night. We didn't get a chance to say hello to Jon, but I did talk to his bandmate, Frankie Reno, after the show. I asked him if it was okay to post pictures, video, etc. here and he said it was fine. My niece got some of both, but I’ll have to wait for her to send it me be before I can post those. I had kept track of the set list throughout the show, but Frankie volunteered his copy as well - very nice guy, BTW.

As I said, I’ll write more later, but for now, I’ll just recap the show. I have to say these guys were very good and they laid it all on the line for a 3-hour, 29-song, high-energy performance. At $25.00 a ticket, that’s some amazing entertainment value. The show was structured very similar to a real Eagles concert – 2 sets with a 4-song acoustic set opening the 2nd set, and two encores. So here’s how it went …

Set 1

1.) The Long Run
2.) Heartache Tonight
3.) Witchy Woman
4.) Peaceful Easy Feeling
5.) Try and Love Again (loved it cause it's the 1st time I've ever seen it performed live by anyone)
6.) Lyin' Eyes (plaintiff joke included)
7.) Take It to the Limit (high notes at the end provided by the audience )
8.) Walk Away
9.) One of These Nights
10.) I Can't Tell You Why
11.) Rocky Mountain Way
12.) Dirty Laundry (jumping included)

[Intermission]

Set 2

[Acoustic]

13.) Seven Bridges Road
14.) Tequila Sunrise
15.) Love Will Keep Us Alive
16.) Best of My Love

17.) Hotel California
18.) New Kid In Town
19.) Those Shoes
20.) The Boys of Summer
21.) Get Over It (again lovin' it cause I'd never seen a live performance before)
22.) Funk #49 (extended guitar intro, and drum solo)

[Band Intros]

23.) Life in the Fast Lane
24.) Life's Been Good
25.) Already Gone

1st encore

26.) Desperado
27.) Take It Easy

2nd encore

28.) How Long
29.) Johnny B. Goode (don't know where this came from, but it rocked)

At the end, they lined up with their arms around each other and took their bows ... just like the real thing. If these guys come to a venue close to you, I would highly recommend that you check them out. You get to hear amazing music, including some songs that the Eagles will never play, performed by a very talented and enthusiastic group of musicians and singers. I'm really glad I went despite the fact that I didn't get home until 3:00 a.m.

So, Friday night, the wife and I ventured out to see "Hotel California," the Eagles tribute band. What follows is merely my opinion(s)....I am NOT a professional.....only a huge Eagles fan.

We had fun in the concert setting. Just like at a real Eagles concert, I was surprised at the age group (majority, including self, had lots of gray hair).

The band? In a nutshell, only adequate. Some songs were done fairly well...others, moderate substitutes. First off, they don't have near the sound system/equipment one would expect of a "pro" band. Even with venue augmentation, it was lacking. I would rate it a couple levels above a good high school party band.

The vocals/harmonizing was surprisingly good, However, vocals were somewhat limited by mixing issues....the lead singer in any song was too dominant with supporting harmonies lacking volume. No one had an Eagles like voice. The Eagles sang in fairly high keys and these guys had adequate pitch, handling several songs fairly well.

Musicianship? Again, just adequate. They did have one really good guitar player, but a barely adequate drummer (no Henley or Crago, that's for sure).

We didn't go expecting note for note dedication to each Eagles tune. All in all, they played fairly accurate renditions with some personalization. One standout difference is, as we all know, the Eagles were criticized for "just standing there." Hotel California moved around too much. I would call it "mugging" for the audience.....a little over the top. On the other hand, if you want a selfie with a band, at stage center during the concert, then this is the band for you.

Again, we had a good time. Would I recommend them? If you're looking for a fun night out because you like Eagles music, and you arrive with reasonable expectations, then I say go enjoy yourself. If you want a note for note, song by song, perfect rendition, go watch your Farewell 1 DVD again.

I think they raise some interesting points. As an aside, just a couple of weeks ago I went to see the Australian Pink Floyd Show (which I thought was superb) - partly because it's virtually certain that Pink Floyd will not tour or perform again (as with the Eagles, they have lost a key band member). The Aussie Floyd is just one of a few well regarded PF tribute bands. Like the Eagles tribute acts mentioned in the article, the Aussie Floyd have an extremely high regard for the original music and try to recreate it as accurately as possible. Therefore, I wonder if it holds true that there is more interest in tributes to bands that are not active for whatever reason (as well as Floyd, The Beatles and Led Zeppelin spring to my mind) than ones for bands that are still active?

According to the article, the band Hotel California has been around since 1983, but they have been exceptionally popular over the last decade when the Eagles have been active. However, they don't look like or dress like the real band members. I'm guessing they were in demand b/c they were a less expensive alternative to the real thing. I speculate that tribute bands that do look and sound just like the Eagles will become more popular in the future. When I first saw the picture in the article, I thought there were 4 guys trying to look like Timothy.

Hi all,

Just wanted to pop in briefly to say I've just got myself a ticket to go and see the Illegal Eagles at the Liverpool Empire this Saturday. I didn't know they were playing until last weekend but after reading reviews of their shows I knew I wouldn't want to pass them up. Really looking forward to seeing their show! Tickets weren't too costly either.

I'm probably not ready to come back fully to The Border just yet, but might reconsider a month or two down the line. I have no idea if anyone else on here (regular poster or otherwise) is going to this show but if by any chance you are going I'd be happy to say hello - I'll almost certainly be wearing my Don Henley T-shirt! Part of the appeal to me is that I know will be surrounded by people who share my love of this great band.

Encore:
25. Life In The Fast Lane
26. Desperado

On a personal note this was the first time I’d ever been to a concert on my own – I had a pretty good seat in the stalls near the front of the stage. The show started at 7:30 PM, when the band members walked on to the sound of Journey of the Sorcerer – although I think this was the version from the 2005 Hitchhiker’s Guide movie rather than the Eagles recording (not sure on this though). The opening surprised me as they started with an acapella performance of the first verse of Hole In The World, before launching into two LROOE tracks – How Long and Busy Being Fabulous. I enjoyed both of these, the former especially (and it was nice to see this album get some love!) I really knew I was in for a great night though with Peaceful Easy Feeling, a beautiful performance which got the harmonies and guitar solo pretty much spot on. A flawless New Kid In Town maintained this high standard (having never heard this song live before it was quite funny to hear my username being sung right in front of me!). Ol’ 55 was, if anything even better, and stood as one of the absolute highlights of the show – they totally nailed it, with an absolutely spot on combination of piano and pedal steel. The man sitting next to me said ‘that was quality’, which for me summed it up perfectly.

The band followed this up with an excellent version of I Can’t Tell You Why, which successfully captured the magic of the superb HFO performance. After ICTYW, one of the band members said ‘now for some rock and roll!’ They delivered this by performing four consecutive pre-HC tracks – Already Gone, One Of These Nights, Witchy Woman and James Dean, all of which were performed very well. Next up was Take It Easy, I wasn’t sure how they would play it, but their take was very faithful to the original version – even down to the banjo coming in at the start of the guitar solo. They sang Silver Dagger before playing it, which made it even better. The final song of the first set was Wasted Time, which they did a fine job with. I spent the interval very much looking forward to the beginning of the second half of the show!
At the beginning of the second set, I noticed that one of the guitarists had brought out a double neck guitar, and this could only mean one thing… Hotel California! It was (perhaps predictably) given a rapturous reception, but this was fully deserved as it was a brilliant performance – the guitar work in particular was superb (the fills as well as the solos). After this song, almost all of the band members left the stage, and the one remaining guitarist played an absolutely beautiful rendition of I Dreamed There Was No War. I thought this was great because, apart from being a very powerful song, it was presented in a way that I think would enable people to enjoy it even if they’d never previously heard it.

The full band then returned to play Try and Love Again, which was a wonderful performance – the vocals and especially the harmonised guitars were handled perfectly. The next song they played was Love Will Keep Us Alive, which I’m not really a great fan of, although they performed it well. After this came the other two big hits from the One Of These Nights album – Lyin’ Eyes and Take It To The Limit. Both songs featured audience participation – we were asked to sing the final verse of the former (virtually everyone knew all the lyrics!) and the refrain at the end of the latter. I’ll be honest and say I think this was perhaps a little overdone, more so on TITTL, but the band performances were excellent (I loved their vocals on the verses on TITTL) and the crowd was really into both of these songs – especially Lyin’ Eyes, which got the second best reception of the night after Hotel California – so it feels a bit churlish to complain.

After the two big sing-a-longs, the crowd was on their feet and the volume was turned up with performances of Rocky Mountain Way, Boys of Summer and Heartache Tonight, all of which really rocked. RMW and Heartache were spot on – BOS was quite different from the way Don played it last summer (to my ears it felt like there was more guitar and less keyboard) although it was still very good. However, the real treat for me was the song that followed – when they introduced the final song of the regular set as ‘how the west was lost’ I was delighted. I was not expecting them to play The Last Resort and I absolutely loved their superb version. The band then left the stage before returning to play a superb Life In The Fast Lane, which featured an extended ending. They then played Desperado as the final song – most of the audience got their phones out for this and it was a great end to the night.
After the show, I stayed to meet all the band members, I got them to sign my programme and told them how much I enjoyed it. It was a delight to be able to speak to them – they are all massive Eagles fans. IIRC the bassist said during the show that they did plan to play every song on the Hotel California album during their current tour, so if you’re planning to go and see them soon there’s a decent chance you might get Victim Of Love and Pretty Maids All In A Row.

It was interesting how the band members spread out vocal duties, which were not along the obvious lines. For example, they had one singer who did New Kid In Town but also did Wasted Time, and another who sang TITTL and TALA while also handling lead vocals on several Henley songs such as BBF, BOS and LITFL (doing an excellent job with both). Also worthy of mention is their excellent attention to detail with their instrumental set up - there was a feature in the programme about their double neck guitar on Hotel California and the great trouble they had gone to in order to ensure authenticity, and the use of the B-bender on PEF greatly enhanced that performance. During the show the bassist (Trevor) handled most of the frontman duties – refreshingly he eschewed the ‘plaintiff’ and ‘credit card song’ jokes and instead used some other entertaining asides between songs.

Overall I thought the Illegal Eagles put on a great show and would recommend it to any Eagles fan. I would definitely go and see them again! My only significant reservation was the lack of songs from Desperado (which was represented solely by the title track), however this was easily compensated for by the inclusion of pretty much every Eagles hit (Tequila Sunrise aside, the only hits omitted were The Best Of My Love and The Long Run) alongside several album tracks which they performed superbly. On The Border was also pretty well represented, which was a nice surprise. I was glad that they mostly played Eagles songs, although the two solo songs they did play were excellent additions to the set list. If I had to pick one highlight, I would go for The Last Resort, although their fantastic take on Ol’ 55 pushed it very close. There were many excellent ones though!

I’m happy to answer any questions about the show, especially from anyone who’s planning or thinking about going to see them.

Very nice! I like how he incorporated all the song titles into the track. It does remind me of Glenn's comment on HOTE about people doing things to the Eagles too, which is also great. I did find myself wondering how it would sound with a slightly more 'Eagles-like' production - I could easily imagine it sounding a bit like TIE if a B-bender Telecaster was used, for example.

Listened to The Long Run Eagles Tribute band Friday night in Boca Raton, FL. Very impressive for a tribute band. Definitely worth checking out.

Here's their website:

Don't know if you still visit these boards Jeremy but thank you very much for the info. The Long Run is playing the Funky Biscuit in Boca again next week and I'm very tempted to take a road trip up there. Never seen an Eagles tribute band before, it may be a surreal experience!

This is a slightly unusual case of a group of local (South Florida) musicians coming together to perform an Eagles album, On the Border, in its entirety. I'm definitely intrigued, and impressed that they didn't choose the more widely known Hotel California.

Concert tribute to Eagles album finds parallel between Nixon and Trump eras

Calling an album that spawned a No. 1 single and sold more than two million copies “obscure” seems a bit off.

But when the band is the Eagles — the most commercially successful American group in popular music history that regrouped this month for two Classic West and Classic East festival concerts in Los Angeles and New York — “On the Border” is not the first album that comes to mind. Merely popular gets overlooked when you’ve got a pop culture landmark like the made-in-Miami “Hotel California” in your catalog.

Yet that’s precisely why Mad Cat Theatre Company musical director Paul Tei is so excited about performing the Eagles’ third album as the latest installment of the Mad Cat Live! contemporary concert series.

Wow, that's interesting for a number of reasons, particularly since some songs will get played that I don't believe the Eagles ever played live such as "On The Border" and "Is It True."

I'm looking forward to it. It wouldn't be reasonable to expect that their harmonies will be as heavenly as the real thing, but I'm hoping they're at least competent!

They are a very talented group of musicians. They weren't trying to imitate the band (though one of the guitarists had on an old school University of Colorado t-shirt just like Glenn's, and one of the roadies was seen striding down the aisle in a tinfoil helmet like Joe's) but stayed mostly faithful to the arrangements.

The only time I felt the wheels starting to come off the bus was "New Kid in Town" - as an encore - with an ill-advised varied tempo ending. But they redeemed themselves with a gospel-tinged "Take It to the Limit" (similar to the version on Randy's 1978 solo album) and a rousing TIE.

Probably the biggest response from the audience was for the title track of "On the Border," done as a blazing rocker. It deepened the mystery for me as to why the real Eagles don't play this song live. Joe Walsh, with his hard funk style, could tear this one up. Maybe it's too demanding on Don H. as a singer to also be playing heavy drums.

The band I saw yesterday had a female drummer and she was great. She could also sing the high notes on TITTL, helping out her male bandmates.

Everyone should check out On The Border. A true tribute band out of Charlotte, NC. They truly try to look and act the actual parts. Great musicians, vocals, and show. Check them out here- http://video.unctv.org/video/3005674823/

I was planning on seeing Another Tequila Sunrise tonight as they were playing right next door to my work but as I went to get tickets I saw they were sold out. I was disappointed because for months I knew about it but I figured getting tickets wouldn’t be an issue. So as I left my work right as the concert started I could hear “Those Shoes” playing and they sounded pretty good. The talk box guitars were spot on. It was tough leaving and I thought about just standing in the rain listening through the door but that’d be a bit weird. I hope at some point they’ll come close again so I can see them.

Where do you live? We tour different areas of the country every year, so maybe we'll be in a "theater near you." :-)

I won 2 tickets to see Already Gone in Houston! The concert is this Friday evening on the 26th. However, I can’t find anyone to go with me. My hubby can’t make it and he’s bummed about it (and he isn’t much of an Eagles fan, lol). Anyway, if anyone in the Houston area is interested in the other ticket, please PM me.

i'd like to see Talon, they're supposed to be good :)

*Now, there are several tribute bands called Hotel California, and Molly saw another one she reviewed here. (https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showpost.php?p=118504&postcount=63)

So, what we can do is try to find others and maybe link to their official sites or tour schedules. I have linked to the official sites of those I could find.

Here's an article on tribute bands, with mention of a couple of Eagles tribute bands that play in the UK. Quite interesting to see the views from a few people who play in such bands and someone who hires them about stigma and what works.

That was an interesting read, UTW. And I agree about tribute bands getting a bad wrap. It takes talented artists with exceptional vocals and musicianship to sucessfully emulate great bands.

Here's an article from a tribute band I have seen their shows. I know one of the musicians in the band. I've known him for over 10 years. The last time I've seen them in concert was in 2015. They came to my state next month, but I couldn't go because I didn't have any money to drive the 3 hours up north.
