Time for the “Hotel California" Survivor game, where we vote off a song until we get to the last one standing! If you're new, for a basic overview of the game, see this post: Survivor Overview (https://eaglesonlinecentral.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6551&postcount=7).

I'm going to list all of the songs on Hotel California here. Vote for the song that you feel should be eliminated from the list. The song that gets the most votes will be taken off of the list (or, in the language of Survivor, "voted off of the island.") Each round, one more song will get axed, until there's only one left. Remember: you're voting for your LEAST favorite, not your favorite.

Each round will last 48 hours after posting to give people a chance to vote who don't post every day. That means that the first round will end at 8:00 Eastern Standard Time the day after tomorrow. If you miss a round, don't think you can't play. It's all good!

Since there may be discussion posts, be sure to make it clear when you are casting your vote. Votes cannot be cast after the cut off time of 8:00 on the second day, and they cannot be changed once you have voted. This holds true even if your vote is a mistake. Sorry, them's the rules!

If you get confused about what round we are in, look at this post. I'll always update it to reflect the current round. Also feel free to post any questions if you don't understand what's going on.

If there is a tie in any round, then ALL votes from ALL previous rounds are tallied and whichever song has the most prior votes is eliminated. That’s the way it’s done on the real show, that’s the way it’s done here. If there is a complete tie with prior votes (Murphy’s Law), then I'll have a sudden-death trivia question ready. The first person who answers it correctly gets to break the tie. The odds of that happening are slim, but you never know, and it's good to be prepared.

The tie-breaker question will be asked one hour after results are in, if there is need for it. The exception is the last round. If the tie-breaker does not resolve the last round, then the tie will be allowed to stand.

We also have immunity questions. We won't have immunity questions on the first or second-to-last-rounds, and of course we won't have them for the last round, lol. However, for the other rounds, we will.

Here's how immunity questions work. After the end of the round, I ask a question related to the album. The first person who answers the question correctly gets to pick a remaining song to be immune - no one can vote for it on the next round. You must include both your answer and the song you wish to be immune in your post in order for it to count. I'll allow two hours for someone to answer. If no one gets it right by then, then we continue the round as normal without any song being immune. You only get one guess per round, so be careful!

And the winner is...

HOTEL CALIFORNIA!

Wow - what a start to this game! I am shocked at all these early votes for Wasted Time. I LOVE that song - to me it is timeless. Unfortunately, broken relationships are just as prevalent today as they've always been, and the lines "You can get on with your search, baby and I can get on with mine" really get to me everytime I hear Don sing it. To me, it's an incredible song, but so are all the songs on this album! This is gonna be hard!

Dreamer, I am as shocked as you are. Wasted Time is such a great song. While I love Last Resort, I can see why others may not... so I would understand that more...

I'm not casting a vote yet... but I will say, I think Victim of Love doesn't really sound as Eagly as the the other songs on the album.

First round isn't usually hard for me... but this one is.

These are all great songs, but to start:

I cast my vote for Try and Love Again.

The reason is all that repetition at the end - he says "Gonna try" no less than 28 times! It's outta control!

Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try
Gonna try, gonna try, gonna try, gonna try.....

I vote for LAST RESORT.

I've never played this before, and this seems to be a difficult on to start on...I really like every song on HoCA. The Last Resort was historically one of my favorites because of the environmental bent, but now I have to be in the mood for it, feels kinda preachy, elitist sometimes.

Yikes! I'm shocked at the Wasted Time votes to start, too! I love that song!

And as I was listening to the album yesterday I was thinking how I was going to vote and wondering where in the world to start! I love all the songs on this album, not a bad one in the bunch, to me. I hadn't heard Try And Love Again for a long time and was reminded how much I loved it, but I can kinda agree with Soda on the "gonna try" bit.

But I also agree with jdf on The Last Resort being a bit "preachy".

Hmmmmm, where to start?

As much as I love it, I vote for The Last Resort. Gotta start somewhere!

I'm suprised at the number of votes Try and Love Again is getting. The song is awesome and Glenn's solo is off the hook. Sure the repetion at the end is long but the way their voices flow make it work.

It's so hard for me to advocate for or against any of these songs - they are all awesome. However, I do like Wasted Time a bit more than The Last Resort. If I have to find any fault with the song, I'd say it's a bit too long. As some of us have said before, they could have stopped at Lahaina. Also, I can see how it may come across as a bit preachy.

Well, I have to say these have been exciting rounds, and I’ve got a feeling that there will be a few others by the time this game is over. The “problem’ here is that there is not a bad song on this album, IMHO. This is going to be a very tough game for me because I think every song is a winner. This is a game where the addition of immunity questions is going to affect the way I vote even more so than usual. I may be wrong, but I’m thinking if you want a song to be eliminated, then you better vote for it while you can because it could end up being saved by the immunity questions for longer than you think it may deserve. For example, in this round, I will be rooting for Pretty Maids All In a Row to go down even though it’s not really the one I want eliminated. I would like to see it last another round or two, but I don’t want it surviving until the late rounds. Therefore, my thinking is that I’d better get it while I can. Anyway, as usual, I’m going to wait to vote, but once again I’m going to urge those who love Wasted Time to form a coalition and vote for Pretty Maids All In a Row.

I find "Pretty Maids All in a Row" superior to "Wasted Time" as well. "Wasted Time" has a great vocal and a lovely melody with a very sophisticated and dramatic arrangement, but it's really more "Don and the Eagles" than an Eagles song in its presentation.

"Pretty Maids All in a Row," on the other hand, has a much fuller "Eaglely" sound with its subtle harmonies and soulful choral ending. It's one of Joe's best vocals, I think - certainly the best amongst his Eagles catalog IMHO - so emotional and touching. Most importantly, it moves me on a deeper level than "Wasted Time" does. If I'm in the right mood, it gives me chills and can even make me get choked up.

So, even though it pains me because I do love the song, I cast my vote for Wasted Time.

It is with much chagrin, I can see that WT will be gone this round. Heartbreaking in my book, as it really is one of my favorites on the album. I have no strategy, or anything else going on. Right now, I'm voting for my least favorite of the remaining.

The Last Resort, now Wasted Time... on a personal level, this sucks! Both of them are extremely important to me and they both give me tingles and make me feel nostalgic whenever I hear them. They remind me of how I first fell for Don and the Eagles. But I appreciate this is a great album with so many fantastic songs. The rounds will only get tougher!

I'm going to repeat my last vote, and go for Victim Of Love.

Two of my favorites have been voted off. :scowl:

Just a comment...The one song I most skip is Hotel California... but I can appreciate it for what it is. While I believe we've discussed this once before... some songs, even if they aren't our favorites, stand the test of time. It's "that" song that even younger generations know...they place the band w/"that" song, even though the bands are so much more... They are so popular and almost become part of the culture...

Stairway to Heaven, Comfortably Numb, Bohemian Rhapsody, (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction, Born to Run, My Generation, Smells Like Teen Spirit, Free Bird... Hotel California.

Such a great album... so many fantastic songs... what to vote for next?

It may be or it may not be, but NKIT is just too close to the country sound that I don't care for. Besides, when it was released in 1976/7, I was the New Kid In Town here in Wichita and it made me feel like the "bad guy" <LOL> but by golly, I got the girl and have kept her 33 years so far!

Seriously, my choice is "personal" and not a critique on the quality of the song itself. It does have good instrumental and vocals and does document a "social situation".

Okay –first of all, I want say that I am very surprised about how little discussion there has been here about the songs compared to some other games, so I’m going to make some comments that will probably turn into a rather long post. It looks like a coalition may be needed to eliminate Victim of Love. I know I’m repeating myself, but it sure is hard to have to lobby to eliminate any of these awesome songs. But Victim of Love has the best chance at elimination this round. Assuming this happens, we will be left with four songs and one more round of immunity. As much as I love Pretty Maids All In a Row – it is time for it to go after this round. There is no way that it deserves to beat out Life In the Fast Lane, New Kid In Town, or Hotel California, IMHO. Although not everyone may agree with me, I’d bet that the vast majority of people would say that these three songs are the best of the best on the album. I understand that some folks want to save Pretty Maids because it is Joe’s only lead vocal on the album. I also realize that anyone can vote for any song they wish in this game for whatever reason they wish. However, at this point in the game, to me it’s all about which are the best songs, not who sings a song. I urge everyone to save either Life In the Fast Lane or New Kid In Town with immunity in the next round. Pretty Maids All In a Row has been protected by immunity long enough. If enough people truly believe it is a better song than the other three, then it will prevail without immunity.

Now – here is why I believe these should be the last three songs to battle it out in this game. Each of them stands alone as a great song in their own right, but, collectively, they are the three songs that perfectly sum up the theme and message of one of the best rock and roll albums ever.

Life In The Fast Lane - This hard rock anthem about a couple going nowhere fast has some of the best lyrics the band ever wrote. To me, this is the song that Joe really shines on (along with Hotel California). His guitar work is off the scale on this song. Don’s vocals are perfect and the melody and guitar riffs are extremely catchy and memorable. So memorable in fact that the title phrase is now a part of our every day vernacular. They even manage to get those famous harmonies in. The song is significant in the band’s history because it showed the world that they were diverse enough to do everything from blue grass to hard rock (and anything in between).

New Kid In Town – I would have to agree that this song does not sound country to me. I believe this is one of the best songs the band ever recorded. It has everything – exceptional lyrics, vocals, harmonies, music, and arrangement. I can’t find any flaws with it. The song fits perfectly into the theme of the album and I love how cleverly it intertwines personal relationships and careers. I think the progression of the lyrics in the three chorus’ is nothing short of brilliant. …

Johnny-come-lately
The new kid in town
Everybody loves you
So don’t let them down.

Johnny-come-lately
The new kid in town
Will she still love you
When you’re not around?

Where you been lately?
There’s a new kid in town
Everybody loves him, don’t they?
And he’s holding her
And you’re still around.

All you have to do is read them and it pretty much sums up the entire song (and album) for you.

Hotel California – This is simply one of the top ten best rock and roll songs ever. Yes, it’s been overplayed, but that’s because of its iconic status. This song is not only brilliant in every way a great song can be, but it was IMPORTANT. Only a few other songs have made a cultural impact the way this song did. In a nutshell, this song changed our society. A single song made a difference – that is significant enough to deservedly earn it a place among the rock and roll elite. IMHO, it deserves to win this game.

I haven't said much about the songs because they are all so well known. It seems to me now that New Kid In Town has lost the status it once had, mainly because it is no longer played live. It isn't just about who sings it, although in that case it is close to a career peak; it is so cinematic (as are HC & LITFL) in the way it describes the progression of the man's career & relationship (re. the career, compare Big Life).

From the day HC was released, I thought NKIT was a throwback to the Country/Rock or Urban/Country days. I listen to the opening. The little country slides on the guitar. The clean tone. For me, it just never did fit in with the rest of the songs on the album in genre.

But that isn't reason enough to eliminate it per-sey. I always thought it something like insurance so that the folks who'd been FANS from the beginning would have something like those early songs on the album to contrast with harder Rock songs like Victim of Love, Hotel California and Life In The Fast Lane.

But Careers? This song is whiner about a guy newly come to town (probably been there before and left because "even your old friends treat you like you're something new {sniffle, snort}). The start of a romance that quickly makes him start thinking that if she took up with him so quick, what was going to happen when he wasn't with her for a while, and oh yeah, he was already looking around too. His fears come to fruition when another new guy comes around and she falls for him. Then his regrets for what he might have done to prevent it.

You gotta have beer when you listen to this one so you have something to cry in. <LOL>

It might be a critique of the lifestyles of those who were the center of attention in the day and to that end, it does fit in with LITFL and HC and decadence of LA in the 70's. But the whole song is just so different than all the others on the album. I really think it would have fit better on one of the early albums.

Freypower
12-01-2010, 07:26 PM
But what it's doing is personalising the grandiose themes, just as LITFL does. It's saying the whole California dream is 'here today, gone tomorrow' but it puts into a personal story instead of telling the history of the state the way The Last Resort does or using the apocalyptic imagery of the title track. I have always thought the Mexican feel of the music was a deliberate attempt to sound like the early days of the state (as in 'I heard the mission bell)'.

My interpretation of New Kid In Town is much like Freypower's. I take a broad view of the lyrics and think the song is about the fleeting nature of fame and fortune, as well as personal relationships in the L.A. scene of the 70's. You know - here today, gone tomorrow whether it be fame or a lover. Half of the verses in the song he talks about romantic relationships, but the other half he doesn't. Anyway, Mike - not trying to change your mind about the song, but there is no way that I see this as a whiny song by a scorned lover.

FP, a song means to you what it means to you. I appreciate that and applaud you for seeing beyond what I thought of as a literal translation.

I can easily read some other meaning into Hotel California because of the fanciful imagery that is written into the lyrics and the rather "stoned" nonsensical phrasing of it. It's pretty obvious that it has a deeper meaning than someone living in a fantasy world staying in a hotel in the middle of the desert with demons and weird people as the other guests. It either means exactly what it says and Henley was so weirded out that that's the way it came out and was meant to be taken literally. But then, it is so off the wall if taken literally, that I think I'll go with what Henley and Frey and the rest of the Eagles proclaimed it: A description of the trap into degradation that LA was to artists and somewhat to everyone living there back in the 70's. Musically and lyrically, this song is in a class of its own. I love it and think it one of the very best songs ever written and performed. That doesn't keep me from being tired of listening to it though <LOL> I love doughnuts but if I ate three dozen of them (and I've come close...yum...Shipley's straight out of the grease and freshly coated!) I'd probably be pretty darn sick of them.

I have no reason to think that NKIT refers to anything other than what its lyrics suggest....a condition of heartbreak caused by casual and rather fickle relationships. And that is a condition that Henley and Frey experienced quite frequently from my understanding back in the 70's. Much of their "inspiration" came from emotional trauma.

It just has never occurred to me to attribute meaning to that song than what was literal in the lyrics.

That doesn't mean it isn't a well written song. It is! The lyrics are great. It has good melody. My "rejection" of it is simply that it is a style that I don't particularly like. I'll even accept the statement that it isn't "country"...but to me, it is close enough that I never could "get in to it".

Victim Of Love is similar in that it describes emotional trauma. I love that song. But it is the way it is set to music that I like more than being inspired by being a Victim Of Love, All broken Hearted. That opening riff, I just really get off on it!

LITFL....just one of the hottest Rockers that the Eagles have ever done. As much of a signature riff as Hotel California or "Satisfaction" from the Stones. And, this is another that is an attempt to describe the trials and tribulations of having it all and going out after LIFE and Financial Success with total abandon. "Life In The Fast Lane, surely make you lose your mine"....there is a price paid and the Eagles were paying it. They were close to burnout and pretty much were frazzled by the time they came out with "The Long Run".

LITFL just documented this. GREAT SONG. As social commentary though, Hotel California is in my opinion one of the greatest. Musically, it is fabulous. Lyrically, it is a Masterpiece. It is a commentary on the dark side of LA life where LITFL is a commentary on the brighter side that everyone thought existed but didn't. In that way, LITFL was embedded a strong message into a song that you just can't sit still while listening to it!

There really weren't any weak songs on this album.

For me, at least, the drama of coalitions and immunity questions is part of the fun! Keeps things from getting predictable. Plus, it gives us a chance to discuss why we like songs. I appreciate it when someone "sells" a song.

So let me tell ya what I like about Victim of Love.

Don's vocal is bluesy and sexy, and so is that guitar, sometimes throbbing, sometimes moaning, sometimes pounding. Great drum on this, too. The song is cool and funky and different. They took a chance with this song and they rocked it. LOVE It.

Geez, everyone analyzes these songs so much, makes me dizzy:hilarious:. I'm guilty of seldom paying attention to the words, even though they're memorized, the meanings, hints, etc., are lost to me. The guitar solos and vocal harmonies are my main attractions, the way the melody hits me. The remaining songs are great individually, it's going to be a tight call at this round's end. No special voting tactics here, just going for the one I like best.

The only reason I think NKIT also describes a career path as well as a relationship is due to the lines 'Johnny come lately/the new kid in town/everybody loves you/so don't let them down' & then when it's all gone wrong it becomes 'where you been lately' although it does refer to the woman going off with the new man too - that is part of the whole scenario. Also the line 'everybody loves him (don't they)' reinforce the fact that the protagonist's career is now on the slide. But I perfectly understand why you prefer the 'romantic' interpretation & as usual, all your other comments are great as well.

I wouldn't want anyone to think I was 'upset' by people not liking NKIT as much as I do - I assure you that isn't the case, but the song is extremely important to me personally.

I pretty much agree with Dreamer about LITFL, NKIT & HC. I never thought of NKIT as being a country song & even after the discussion here about it I still don't consider it country. I remember hearing or reading JD Souther saying that they were writing about what they saw going on around them & eventually realized that they were writing about their own demise.

I have grown to love Victim of Love. They really rock it but, as with voting off any of the other songs on the album, it's just my next least favorite. Therefore I cast my vote for Victim of Love.

Save NKIT!!

First of all, we have talked about this before, and I understand that some people aren't in to analyzing songs and lyrics, etc. There certainly ain't nothing wrong with that. I definitely can relate. I'm a little of both - sometimes I enjoy simply listening to a song and not thinking much about the meaning. However, then there are times when I'm in a more reflective mood and I do think about them, especially when the lyrics are ambiguous. I guess that's a lot of why I love the Eagles. So having said that, here's more analysis on New Kid In Town ...

That's funny because it's actually two of the verses that I think make it sound more like fleeting fame and fortune rather than romance to me. The song starts out ...

There’s talk on the street; it sounds so familiar
Great expectations, everybody’s watching you
People you meet, they all seem to know you
Even your old friends treat you like you’re something new

To me in that first verse, there is no hint of this being about a romance. But then in the next two verses, he switches to the romance. However, in the last verse, he returns to talking about the non-romantic part ...

There’s talk on the street; it’s there to remind you
That it doesn’t really matter which side you’re on
You’re walking away and they’re talking behind you
They will never forget you 'til somebody new comes along

I interpret the line "there's talk on the street" and the use of the word "they" in both verses as being about a broader group of people, not just the romantic love interest that he specifically refers to in the other two verses.

And BTW, "they will never forget you 'til somebody new comes along" may be one of my favorite lines ever in a song.

I really REALLY want people to agree with me about NKIT. For every one of you who agrees with me, I'll give you one of Austin's guitars!

Fits too. Austin is the "New Kid In Town". Everybody loves him. But even while I'm talking to him, I'm looking at that PRS he just got thinking that it'd be so much better in MY arms. But as nice as that PRS is, I'm having urges that I can barely control concerning Ruby. My fingers start twiching and my veins are beginning to throbbing. Hmmmm....maybe there is a song in there somewhere <LOL>

Playing the Survivor game used to be fun when people weren't voting simply to tick off other people, or because a song got voted off early. Talk about sucking the fun out of a game...

I have to agree with PM. Of course, if you get the immunity question correct first, you are entitled to make any song immune. But when you admit that you are not saving the song because you love it, people are bound to get a bit irritated.

Yes, there is strategic voting, but it's always with the intent to save a song you really love and care about - not just to make a point or wind people up. Without sounding like a stickler, I think this kind of reasoning makes a mockery of the game and takes some of the fun and balance out of it.

First and foremost----I totally agree with you WastedMaid (are you tired of that yet?). It saddens me when people don't play nice!

And Dreamer---you want discussion....I'll give you discussion, baby!! And you are going to be so sorry you asked for it! :hilarious: Especially since I can't put things as eloquently as some of you here.

:weep: I'm so sorry!! It's the whole Help Me Thru The Night survivor "incident" for me all over again!! I always seem to vote the wrong one off. :hilarious: Seriously tho---I truly believe what you say is true, especially the whole "cultural impact" and "song changed our society" thing. EVERYONE knows this song, whether they are an Eagles fan or not and most people can sing along to every word of it. BUT, for me it's just not my favorite on the album. I truly like it but I like and appreciate NKIT and VOL & LITFL more. If PMAIAR hadn't been immune, I definitely would have voted for it instead. The bit about HC being "overplayed", I really feel it has been but that really doesn't mean here or there to me as far as how I voted.

And Mike, I agree with your "fanciful imagery". Very well put. I have often envisioned this song in my mind and can almost see the long corridor and the pink champagne on ice.

Whether or not I like Pretty Maids is completely irrelevant. Making it my immunity choice is merely a means to an end. Interesting how my "pettiness" is considered "strategy" for others.

On the subject of Maids being immuned, I have to say I don't quite understand your response here. Usually when someone does a strategic move in this game, they back it up with a pretty legitimate response on why. I have admitted many a time in these games that I never vote strategically, for me it's whether I like a song, or from the heart. Many have tried to explain to me the reason for the strategy moves, and I admit, I don't always "get it", so maybe I'm just overlooking the obvious reason you would make it immune as "a means to an end".

Soda--You are freakin' spot on about VOL-Don's vocals are bluesy and sexy and the words are beautiful to me. I adore this song and have appreciated it more and more over the years.

:hilarious: You crack me up!! BUT I don't agree with you NOW. In thinking back, I do recall many years after the album came out, not caring much for NKIT for basically the reasons you have stated. So I am now questioning myself with the thought of "if I dislike country so much, why have my feelings changed about this song?". I'm afraid I don't have an answer. Another one that has grown on me over the years, especially the last couple. Blame it on Julie and her love for it and how she's expressed the meaning to her so often here on the board. Besides, I really, really like Glenn's voice here. It seems so emotional, for lack of a better word.

As for LITFL---I will reiterate what I've said in the thread where we were discussing "fun" songs or such? I defy anyone to hear this song and not want to get up and dance around the room and sing along. Second, the lyrics just grasp me, I love the whole "live for the moment and damn the consequences" theme of it. Bad ending but they sure went out in a blaze of glory! JMO tho for what's it's worth.

And after all of this....I have a confession....I really don't know which song I actually want to win in the end. That is the first time I can ever say that. Usually I have a definite song I want to win and possibly a 2nd that I wouldn't mind if it won also. This time, there are actually 3 that I keep going back and forth on, and no, HC is not one of them I'm sorry to say.:fear:

Well - I was hoping to get some lively discussion going about the songs on this album so thanks to all of you who are contributing to that. As most of you know, I really like to give my opinions on different songs, but I also love hearing others opinions as well. That is part of the fun of the Survivor games for me. Of course, I neither expect or even want others to always agree with me. How boring would that be! The other fun part of the game to me is the strategy. I think good discussion, spirited debate, and strategy make things interesting as long as the participants show respect and common courtesy for the rules and for one another.

I will be going out of town tomorrow morning so I hope I'll be able to get online to vote while I'm away. Since I've got a busy day ahead of me, I'm going to have to vote earlier than I like. So, to no one's surprise (even though I love the song) ...

Well, well, well, this has certainly been an interesting round! And all of the remaining songs are so great!

But, there are 3 of the icons of the Eagles remaining. And that is not to say that I don't like PMAIAR, because I really do. But it doesn't in any way stand up to those last three and should have gone this round.

Dreamer couldn't have said it any better than this:

I would only add that I do find NKIT to have the country feel to it, but that's just my thought and I like a little country!

So, even though I love the song (Don's sexy voice and the guitar are awesome) and it's going down one round too soon, I vote for Victim of Love.

MikeA

Several have stated that "Hotel California" "changed out culture". How did it do this. I mean exactly what did it change?

Don't get me wrong, I think it is going to end up the last one standing. Either it of LITFL and either one deserves the honors but just because of the popularity of HC, I'd expect to see it crowned.

It was "about" LA culture and the trap that fame and fortune sprang. So it described culture. It didn't introduce a new genre. It did take a Reggae riff and "Latined" it up and took it over the top. But people didn't start wearing different kinds of clothes because of it. It did cause a lot of people to try and figure out what "colitas" were/was and exactly what 'Hotel California" building the song was about (sort of like the "House Of The Rising Sun" the Animals popularized that really didn't exist).

Now the Beatles did indeed change culture...music culture AND social culture. They influenced music heavily and they kicked off a cultural revolution that caused a huge percentage of the kids of the 60's to open up....grow their hair out, take off their bras, wear flags, smoke dope and take LSD. But even with the Beatles, not a single specific "song" was culture-changing.

I would only add that I do find NKIT to have the country feel to it, but that's just my thought and I like a little country!

And THANKS Brook. That is all I've been trying to say. It "feels country". I don't think it is a "bad" song. But dang-it, it's COUNTRY <LOL>

The first three I wanted to see go first were Wasted Time, Victim of Love, and The Last Resort. If Pretty Maid had not been made immune twice, it would be gone by now.

Since Victim of Love doesn't need my vote to send it off, I'm voting for Hotel California.

I sure have missed out on some interesting rounds of this game. I'm a bit sad that I couldn't take part in the previous rounds but the final three are as I would have had it on my list. As far as the remaining songs go they are all superb in every way. Musically, lyrically, vocally. These three songs have the total package. I've read that many of you see HC as being overplayed and I must admit to feeling that way at times but the majority of the time I really enjoy hearing this song. It never gets old to me. For the sake of it's place in rock n roll history I feel that HC should be the song to win but the other two put up a pretty good fight for that title. LITFL is an all around solid rocker. This is one of the songs that I tend to listen to over and over and never get tired of hearing it. The lyrics are great and Don's vocals totally sell it for me but it's the music and those fantastic guitar riffs that get me every time. I just love the heck out of this song. As for NKIT, Glenn vocals are what get me in this song. It's usually the vocals and music that attract me to a song. I mean, the lyrics are great but with this song I tend to focus on Glenn's voice and the harmonies. I don't always read too much into the lyrics and this is one of those songs that I don't do that with very much. And, Mike, imo I do detect a hint of country in NKIT.

A fantastic song and worthy of the top 3 but I must vote for New Kid In Town.

Ooooh, this one is soooo hard. Three excellent world class songs, and I have to eliminate one of them. Well y'all KNOW what I'n going to vote the winner so its down to two. I must say though, having seen both of them performed live I just love the thrill and the high that finishes the 'main' part of the show (ie before the encores). So I think I'll keep 'LITFL'. Meaning that sadly, this round and with some regret I suggest that 'Hotel California' checks out, even though I never want it to leave.

Sorry to have missed last round, but it went as it should, imo, with Pretty Maids going out. Even though I do love the song, something had to go.

And now, Peek said it all for me here:

And great though it is, and Glenn's voice is wonderful, I don't think it measures up to LITFL or HC lyrically or musically.

I cast my vote for New Kid In Town.

This is our last and final round. As a result, it’s special. We do NOT vote for the song we want to leave. We vote for the one WE WANT TO WIN. That’s the way they do it on the show, so that’s the way we do it here.

Again,

VOTE FOR THE SONG YOU WANT TO WIN.

this is hard, Hotel California was the song my dad used to introduce to the Eagles when I was young, but New Kid in Town is also a favorite....Hotel California is the kinda song I drive around blasting in the summer while NKIT is the song that usually plays when driving around with a girl lol....I vote for Hotel California

Wait, are we voting for the winning song now to win the game or are we voting something off? If we are picking the song to win, I'd pick Hotel California. If we are voting off a song, I'd pick Life In The Fast Lane.

Austin--LITFL was voted off last round. It's down to HC and NKIT. I think that you can't go back in and change it tho because there is no editing allowed once you have voted.

I vote for the Eagles anthem-HOTEL CALIFORNIA!

One of the best rock songs EVER!

If New Kid In Town wins this it will be the biggest boilover we have ever had & a testament to the song which has been so - shall we say - not well treated in recent times. And I didn't even vote for it thinking it was no contest.

Mike, you surprise me!

I really am not crazy about most country. And, I don't particularly like NKIT. I'm just sort of going along with the crowd after seeing how NKIT is knocking off the masterpieces "Life In The Fast Lane" and "Victim Of Love". I fully expect that it will also knock off "Hotel California" on the forum here for some reason.

It really is my own opinion that NKIT doesn't merit being anywhere close to the pick of the litter on this Album. But that's just me.

It just sort of amazes me that it is still hanging around in this exercise....sort of like a mongoose fascinates a cobra.

This mongoose prefers NKIT over HC for the simple reason today is the anniversary of its release in 1976 and for the fact that it's just a great song and Glenn does a bang-up job on the vocals. I consider this one of his best songs. This isn't taking away from HC which is brilliant and will always be associated with the Eagles.

This is only MY personal opinion and this is one time I won't back down from it.

Wow, the songs are actually tied now! I thought "Hotel California" would be easily ahead. FP is right - if NKIT town wins, it would be the biggest upset we've ever had.

I still haven't decided which one I'm going to vote for. I adore "New Kid in Town", but "Hotel California" is a signature song... hmm! I'll give it some more thought.

MikeA

It is interesting....the facts about the Album "Hotel California". Can't argue with the STATS. But NKIT will never come close to LITFL, VOL or HC in my opinion. However, those of you who really love NKIT are not out there all by yourselves by any means. It garnered higher aclaim than I have ever given it credit for.
