Eagles Song Survivor: "Eagles" LP

To me, TLHTM is the most beautiful song the Eagles have ever recorded. For me, It is just as much a classic and iconic Eagles song as Take It Easy, and I always think of it that way. It always surprises me when it is not included on their various compilations and best of collections, and it never occurred to me that it wasn't loved by everyone.
It was included on Collected Works as Bernie's only lead vocal, good choice. I rate it as my 3rd or 4th favorite song alongside Most Of Us Are Sad on this, my favorite Eagles album.

TLHTM is a lovely song, but I think "My Man" is Bernie's finest - so moving.

I've always thought TLHTM's lyrics are oblique to such a degree tha they're almost stream-of-consciousness. Words aren't quite used in the way you expect them to be, leaving a vague sense of confusion. However, it somehow works. Perhaps it is because the guy in the song seems a little lost himself. At least, that's how it comes across to me.

You were correct in your remembering.
That Survivor happened before I joined the Border, but as I have The Solo Collection CD I was interested to see how the vote went.
Must admit, that out of the final two I would have gone for dreamer's original choice of YBTTC.

I suspect that now there are more people who both belong to The Border and play the Survivor games that the results of some of the early games would be different if played now. Though some would probably still be exactly the same. :grin:

Yes, I think that happened with Desperado Survivor - this time Tequila Sunrise won it, and the first time apparently Desperado won.

Certainly no surprise here, once again I cast my vote for Witchy Woman. Not one of the best songs on the album, and definitely doesn't belong in the top two.

Well - I'll stray off topic a bit before casting my vote. In the Frey Solo Collection Survivor, I was prepared to vote for You Belong To the City, but decided to make the vote unanimous. Honestly, the difference between the quality of those two songs is very miniscule, IMHO. I was actually surprised that POMPOY swept that round because for me both songs are pretty much the embodiment of a perfect song and Glenn's two solo masterpieces.

With regard to different results in the Survivor Games, I've actually been a bit surprised at how close the results of the two games have been for each album. The main differences seemed to be in the middle rounds of the games, much of which I attribute to the fact that we did not have immunity questions in the first round of games as we did in the second. Even though the winners were different in a some of the games, the two songs that finished in first and second place were exactly the same in all of the games but one if my memory serves me correctly.

Now - back on topic to this game. In my opinion, the three remaining songs are very deserving. For me, it's difficult to differentiate whether Witchy Woman or Peaceful Easy Feeling is better. The have very different attributes, but I love them both. It's pretty obvious that Witchy Woman is going down here so I am going to vote strategically to try to avoid the chance of a tie in the final round. So ...

Even the most powerful spell ain't going to save 'Witchy woman', which is my personal favourite - and after listening to Don bash the drums almost at the very beginning of the song I can understand why Austin calls it 'the rocker' of the album.

Both PEF and TIE seem a bit 'bland' (for want of a better word) by comparison to WW.
I can probably guess how the final votes are going to go, but in case there's a tie and it goes to count-back, I have decided that I am no longer going to vote in this round. I am not going to have the possibility of the outcome resting on which way I voted. :fear:

Glad I'm not the only one! :D It's definitely a rocker to me and if you've ever heard it, especially live, you really understand why...

It's a VERY hard choice for me but I love Peaceful Easy Feeling.... I've played that on acoustic so long (same with Take It Easy). And I really love singing and playing it and listening to it. It's a very smooth song - if you know what I mean. ;) :hilarious: As far as Take It Easy, it is the "Hotel California" of their country days. Definitely the best on the album IMO and a true classic. I love Witchy Woman but Peaceful Easy Feeling edges it out a bit unfortunately for me.

Back in 2008 when I joined The Border I pressured myself to choose my favorite Eagles song. Others on here had clear favorites - what would mine be? I thought about it, and thought and thought and thought some more. I finally had to use the old, "Well, if somebody put a gun to my head and told me to choose, I guess it would be Peaceful Easy Feeling." However, I've never been able to 'stand firm' on that decision (and fortunately no one's ever put a gun to my head).

As LTL pointed out, PEF's imagery is so good that the song takes you along to that desert, "with a billion stars all around". The mellow music matches the mood of the song perfectly, and Glenn's voice? Ahhh, I'm sure I speak for just about everyone here who wants him to be singing to them. I never get tired of hearing this song.

And then there is Take It Easy. All I can say is that I'm so glad Glenn pestered Jackson Browne until he let him finish the song. Talk about imagery! "It's a girl, my lord, in a flat bed Ford" is probably one of the most recognizable lyrics ever. And talk about a feel-good song! Who can't relate to the message? The Eagles introduced their harmonies big time in the chorus of this song. Even Jackson comments on it in his Going Home video. He says what a great arranger Glenn is and what a great ear he had when he arranged this song. I don't have that clip, but I do have a clip of how JB introduces TIE on his Solo Accoustic Vol. 1 cd. Listen as some guy requests the song.

Well - I can't disagree with any of the comments I've read in this round. Both of these songs are just awesome, but there can only be one winner. To me, that song should be the one that started it all - the band's first hit. I know it started it all for me, this became my favorite band from the first moment I heard this song, and my fandom has never waivered since ... the only song that has probably been played in every single live show the band has ever performed ... the Eagles anthem ...

Overall, after going back through this album again, I would have to say that it is a much better album than I had remembered. I really hadn't listened to this album much in recent years, and like many others, was of the general opinion that it was an uneven album (some great tracks, but several forgettable ones, too). But now after carefully going through it again song by song for this survivor challenge, I realize that it is actually a very strong album, with very good songs throughout, and probably deserves more recognition than it has received as being right up there among the Eagles best albums.
