Hi Stars! I've been wondering where you've been. Missed you!

Peoria is this Friday night. We have some friends who got tickets also so we're going to go together. There is a gambling boat in Peoria so the plan is to go there for a couple hours (or as long as it takes to lose) :lol: then we'll grab some dinner and head over to the civic center for the show. Pretty good seats for this one too - 2nd row center but behind a three row orchestra pit. I'm pumped!

Anyway, we just called and confirmed plans with our friends. They live on the way so we will pick them up around 2:30 and head on over to Peoria. Should be fun. I hope you have a blast Cathy and hope Jackson is in good form. I would so loved to have been able to join you at this show. As you know, I briefly considered it. If I had traveled out there, I guess I would be a nervous wreck by now after the events of the last couple days. But, of course, I don't think Jackson would ever cancel a show unless he absolutely had to being the consumate professional that he is.

Can't wait to hear all about it!

Let me just start by saying:

I am a happy girl!!!

Although Jackson was clearly getting over a nose/throat thing, he pulled through with flying colors, especially during the second set. We got 25 songs with a half hour intermission. (He said he was going to take a 15 minute break, but I was glad it was longer because it took me practically the entire 1/2 hour to stand in line for the bathroom and get back to my seat.)

We were basically in the 5th row dead center, although on the ticket it read row B. There were three rows of padded folding chairs (indicated as the orchestra pit on the seating chart) and then a brass rail running the width of the seating area. Behind that were velvety comfy arm chairs, which we enjoyed very much. The show was to start at 8:00 and he came onstage about 8:10. He was wearing the exact same thing as when we saw him at the Horseshoe - gray shirt and jeans and the stage was set the same also.

He started with Barracades Of Heaven and then said something like, "You've probably heard by now that on this tour there is no set list..." and finished his thought. As soon as he stopped speaking a female voice to my left shouted, "LOOKING INTO YOU!" What luck! I quickly followed up by shouting, "LOOKING INTO YOU!". He had sat at the keyboard by this time and I heard those first familiar beautiful notes and said to Hubby, "He's going to do it! This is Looking Into You!" I soaked in the song as he sang it, knowing that it would probably be the only time he would sing one of my requests, and it was. He actually stopped halfway through the second verse, used an expletive, good naturedly said he was messing up and started the second verse again, this time in a different key. There were no more mistakes in the song.

A little later he said, "I don't know if you heard but I had to cancel a show the other night because I... (wasn't feeling well, was sick, not sure how he worded it.) Instinct took over and when he stopped speaking I said, "Hope you're feeling better!" He looked out and said, "I am feeling better. I'm feeling much better." :yay: He went on to talk about how he usually stays healthy when he's touring but that he'd recently gone home for a week and thought maybe he might have caught something then. A short while later as the crowd was shouting out requests he sat down on his "guitar playing chair" and motioned to us with an upturned index finger as if to say, "just a second" and blew his nose! Everybody laughed and he said something like, "This would be a good time to do Cocaine. But if I did it I would do the rehab version", but he didn't do it. I was glad because I don't like the song. He then put what looked to be a cough drop in his mouth for about 20 seconds and took it out and put it on the top of his amp, where he had gotten the kleenex. You could tell, especially during the first set, that his voice was affected by his being sick, but he still sounded good to me and by the second set his voice had warmed up and he sounded much better.

I noticed as JB continued through a couple more songs that he was not telling any stories but just singing the songs. At one point after another wave of requests were shouted I waited for the quiet moment and said, "Tell us more about the songs!" That got a laugh from the audience and from Jackson and once again he replied to me by saying, "I'm afraid if I start talking I won't stop", which got a spattering of applause. :yay:

Even though he had sung Looking Into You that didn't stop me from shouting out requests here and there, although I must say my strategy was rather desperate, calling out a different request after every song. "THE ONLY CHILD!...THE TIMES YOU'VE COME!...JUST SAY YEAH!"
Hubby's second request choice for this show was My Stunning Mystery Companion. He really knows how to pick 'em doesn't he? :lol: Very wordy titles. Hubby has a voice for radio and all week long he had been comically 'practicing' his request. Out of nowhere he would leap up from his recliner and shout, "MY STUNNING MYSTERY COMPANION!." Toward the end of the show I decided to help him out because JB had not done it yet, so along with a barrage of other requests from the audience we shouted out in unison, "MY STUNNING MYSTERY COMPANION!" to no avail. Oh well, I understood that Jackson had to pretend he was interested in what others wanted to hear besides Hubby and I. ;)

I thought from the beginning that the crowd was much more lively and into it last night than at the casino show, and he defintely appreciated it and fed off of it.

After playing Running On Empty he bowed, left the stage and came back out a minute or so later for his encore, which was a cover of Warren Zevon's Mohammed's Radio

I have to admit I was worried going in to this show. After the somewhat disappointing shortened concert two weeks ago and the fact that he was sick I was afraid that the show might be sub par, but it wasn't and I came out just as big of a fan as before, if not more. I still maintain that my preference is to see and hear Jackson with his band, but I wouldn't have missed this for the world.

I'm bummed for you PM! I'm sure you enjoyed it and all but I wish you would of known it would be a shortened show. Maybe someone who knows more about casino shows (Mike? Jess?) knows why that has anything to do with a shortened set. Were the tickets cheaper? Just curious. Hope it was worth your long drive and overnight stay tho. Keeping my fingers crossed for Peoria!

For Row B center seats at a full show at the Peoria Civic Center we paid $65 per seat at the Jackson Browne site presale. You tell me which was the better deal! :huh: Oh well, live and learn. I wanted to thank Brooke one more time. If it wasn't for coming here and seeing her post about the Jackson Browne site presale we wouldn't have got those great seats. Thanks Brookie!!! :xoxo:

Hopefully he'll tour next year with his band. I can see him struggle when he goes for the high notes now and he's already dropped the key to those songs, so I don't know how much longer he can keep touring at the pace he's used to. You're welcome, Pm! I sooooooo wanted to go to this, but our son is getting married in July and all my money is being saved for that right now! I hadn't even thought about it when the presale started. The bride's parents are footing her part, of course, but guess what? There's still lots for the groom's parents to take care of! :woah: WOW!!! What a difference in prices and you got the longer show for the lesser money!! I will have to keep that in mind! Like I said before, the only show I ever saw at a casino was actually a very reasonable price so I didn't think anything of it. :shrug:

Just saw Jackson Browne at the historic Orpheum Theatre tonight!

I wasn't sure I was going to go with all the flooding downtown, but I figured, "What the heck." I drove down there and while some roads were closed, Beale Street and the Orpheum were just fine. I walked up to the box office and lucky for me, they had a seventh row seat on the left center aisle! I was really happy, as from home I'd been pulling up last row, literally.

When Jackson came onstage, he commented that he'd seen how high the river was and it made him appreciate what he had when he thought of all those people losing their homes and possessions.

He told us he was going to play a lot of songs he doesn't usually play. Some of them I didn't recognize. One of them was a "pagan" Christmas song, one was a song about going to Cuba, one was a song where he talks about how he thought he was a child (he said he wasn't sure he was "physically able" to do that one because he almost never did it). I was happy to hear "Looking Into You," "Your Bright Baby Blues," "For Everyman," "These Days," "Running on Empty," "The Pretender," and "The Load Out / Stay." We didn't get "Late for the Sky" or "Rock Me on the Water" as I'd hoped, but I was actually happy he didn't do "Take It Easy" as it can't leave up to the Eagles version. He also did a Zevon cover - not "Mohammed's Radio" but another song I didn't recognize. He did "Cocaine" but he added what he called the "rehab verses" where he talks about giving it up. He did both of his songs about Little Jackson - "Rosie" and "Red-neck Friend." After "Rosie" he said that Danny Kortchmar thought it was a bad idea to record that, lol. He then played the Kortchmar-penned song "Shaky Town." He ended with "Before the Deluge" which seemed very appropriate!

The only sour note was that there were some jerks a couple seats down who thought the show was about them. Yeah, you call out names of songs you want to Jackson, but you don't try to yell out a freaking conversation with him. This guy would actually talk OVER Jackson! Example: "I wrote this next song about going to Cuba..." Guy: "I WENT TO CUBA!" Or Jackson would sing a lyric like "Don't confront me with my failures - I had not forgotten them" and he would holler "THAT IS SO TRUE!" Sometimes one or two of them would sing so loudly it drowned Jackson out. Folks were yelling at him to shut up. It was so lame. One of his buddies left to go to the bathroom, missed "Running On Empty," then came back and started hollering for Jackson to play it again. Thankfully the loudest one left about 3/4 of the way through and the rest quieted down a bit after that. At one point it had gotten so bad that Jackson even stopped and said something like "What are you guys drinking back there?" Then Jackson asked a roadie to bring him some rum, lol.

Some more "Memphis moments": he started to play "Love Me Tender" but then he forgot the words, so he gave up lol. He changed the lyrics in the "Load Out" where it talks about not knowing what city you're in, instead saying "You always know when you're in Memphis."

Afterwards some concertgoers and I walked down Beale Street and stopped to get some food. Nothing closes down there 'til 3:00 am, not even on a weeknight. The only exception is Sunday. It was pretty wild.

Overall, Jackson's voice sounded great. No missed notes. Very glad I went!

Sounds like it was great fun except for the party boys! Poor Jackson. Especially in an acoustic setting like that, kinda makes it hard to ignore those kind of fools.

Oh wow! I'm so glad you got to go to the show. I really wish I had been able to join you, but I guess it wasn't in the cards for me to see Jackson this time around. Honestly though, I think I'd prefer to see a show where I know the setlist. I love Jackson, but I'm more of a casual fan - not hardcore. I'm not familiar with all of his catalog, so I'd just rather hear mostly hits if I went to a show. But I'm sure I'd have a good time either way, and glad you did too, Soda. :thumbsup:

Overall the crowd was pretty responsive. They clapped and cheered after every song and Jackson got several standing ovations.

Something I forgot to mention earlier:

Jackson was very laid back. Before Lives in the Balance he had started strumming and telling a story about another song when people called out for Lives in the Balance. He said something along the lines of "oh yeah that's a good one", put up the guitar he had been playing and picked up a different guitar and starting playing the song. He had about 20 guitars on stage with him all tuned differently so he could play anything he wanted without having to tune the guitar.

A similar thing happened with Fountain of Sorrow. He was standing up trying to decide which guitar to play when people started shouting for the song. He just shrugged and went over to the keyboard to play it.

Apparently there is an article in the Dallas paper that mentions Don's appearance but you have to be a paying subscriber to actually read it. However, it was tweeted about from people at the Cherokee Creek Music Festival where Jackson was performing and that is basically how I found out about it last weekend.

I didn't say anything sooner because someone else always seems to be way ahead of me on all these things. I had a scoop and didn't even know it...:blush:

Sorry Willie. not sure if there is anything in this thread. :headscratch: I saw about it May 17th on L & M's - posted May 15th there. Presumed someone else in the US would have seen something about it and posted here. They didn't have much other than they found it through Twitter. He appeared with Jackson at Cherokee Creek Music Festival in Mason County, Texas. There was a link with a couple of photos added.

I think his hesitation was mostly because he was caught off guard by the request for that particular song. The woman had asked if he could please play a song for her mom and he said sure and then asked what song she wanted him to play. When she said Daddy's Tune he looked a little shocked. I can't remember if there was an audience reaction when he asked if her mother was in the audience but everyone cheered when he started walking to the keyboard. Before the song he told a story about how he had recently been learning to play the song live with a friend of his singing the lyrics. He said that he played it in a different key when his friend was singing so he was trying to remember what key to play it in for himself. He also told a story about the first time he played the song for his dad. As he was finishing up the song he said he wasn't sure how to end it, which got a laugh from the audience. After the song everyone cheered and several people gave Jackson a standing ovation. It will be one year ago tomorrow that I saw JB for the first time. Fortunately I have got to see him twice since then, both times during his solo accoustic tour. As much as I enjoyed them I am holding out for another show when he tours with his band, hopefully next year.

The fall leg of Jackson's 2011 solo accoustic tour starts this Friday in Michigan. I find (as I knew I probably would) that I prefer to see him with his band. Since this year was taken up by his solo accoustic tour, I'm hoping next year he will once again tour with his band.

I would say that the most emotion I have heard come from a Jackson Browne song is Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate from The Pretender. Jackson married Phyllis Major in December 1975. Their son Ethan had been born in 1973. Four months after they were married, in March of 1976, Phyllis committed suicide by overdosing on pills. At the time, Jackson was in the studio recording The Pretender.

Browne experienced the tragedy of his wife, Phyllis Major, taking her life in 1976. When the suicide happened, he was in the studio recording The Pretender. The singer-songwriter told Mojo magazine that this was the only song on the album to be directly influenced by the tragic event.

Although there is a youtube video of Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate from the dvd, Going Home, I find the original recording the most haunting and emotional. When he sings, Oh God, this is some shape I'm in, you can hear the sob in his voice, and when he continues with, Sometimes I lie awake at night and wonder where the years have gone, his voice breaks as if he's about to cry.

I do love JB, but I don't know if I could sit through a concert without just bawling my head off. Most of his songs are just so emotional and heart wrenching. Sky Blue and Black is one of my favorite songs of his....just beautiful. I have to be in a certain mood and alone in the car to listen to his cds. My hubby turned me on to him back in the day and we have all of his early cds and vinyls and I'm a big fan, just don't know about a live show as much as I'd love to see him live.

I think you would absolutely love a live JB show, Brooke. His personality is so warm and sincere. and he has plenty of rockier, more upbeat songs to get you dancing! I would say that James Taylor's show was much more mellow and emotional. Jackson's was fun. It had some beautiful moments with songs like Late For The Sky, but it wasn't at all depressing. His comments between songs are cute and funny, too. It's very relaxed and really a celebration of music. I would absolutely go if you ever get the chance! Songs like You Love The Thunder, Somebody's Baby, Running On Empty, Stay and the treat of Take It Easy at the end will make sure you leave on a high.

Ironically, one of the few albums I do not have is Lawyers In Love. As I've mentioned before, I'm not really a fan of the song, and always make a point to skip it. Late For the Sky seems to be thought of as the favorite of most JB fans; however, my favorite is For Everyman, because when I listen to those early songs it takes me back to that time in the early 70's of good folk rock. I like to listen to the album as it was recorded without shuffling the songs to maintain the total feel of the album. In fact, some of the songs run right into the next one.

As much as I love Jackson Browne, I have never read a book about him. I guess I don't really get into those that much. This page will give you a brief but interesting biography.

I have to confess I have not read ALL of this thread yet, (I'm up to page 20) but when I saw it had to share something... After The Eagles show on Sunday night, it struck me that I have had the priviledge of seeing Take It Easy performed live by both Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey.

JB came out here in 1996 on the Looking East tour. I saw him at Sun City, and it was a brilliant show. He kept saying things like "I can't believe you guys know that song..." I guess playing here was still a bit of an unknown back then. But he seemed to be having a great time and enjoying himself.

This is also why the Looking East album has a special place for me, but my favourite JB album has to be I'm Alive, hands down... Sky Blue and Black is one of those songs that bring a lump to my throat every time I hear it.

Thanks Cathy... I promise I am working my way through this and several other threads at the moment... With regard to the albums you have (yes, I show my age when I say 'albums', but despite enjoying having a digital database of my music, I still love buying CD's) The Naked Ride Home is arguably my second favourite. Not only the songs but the production on that is astounding... I have yet to hear a sound system that can faithfully replicate and play the track 'Sergio Leone'. I love Looking East, as I saw many songs from that live, of course, and I also like Lives In The Balance. BUT... That is one of many albums from the Eighties crying out for a decent remastering... Not the best production.

Found out Saturday night at the Styx concert that Jackson is coming to a venue about 1/2 hour from me and tickets go on sale this Saturday for October 25th. Debating on this one. Will probably have to go by myself because hubby isn't a fan(and the first words out of his mouth when I picked up the flyer was "oh no way", and I don't know if anyone else will go either. I seem to be the lone Jackson fan amongst my friends here.

Here's a little interesting tidbit of information I came across in a book I'm reading, "Stories I Only Tell My Friends" the Biography of Rob Lowe where he writes about meeting actress Darryl Hannah, when she was about 19 & before she was a famous actress.

While filming a movie in Chicago, Rob was invited to Thanksgiving dinner with his director, Lewis John Carlino at the home of a wealthy Chicago family, which are Darryl's parents. They end up at an all night diner chatting away late into the night. He is very taken with her, but she tells him, she is a virgin & is saving herself for Jackson Browne, who she has never met.

Seems she got her wish at having Jackson, because I know they dated for a very long time & I believe lived together.:eyebrow:

I saw Jackson Browne last night. Awesome show as usual. He said the tour was originally billed as a solo acoustic, but he was having so much fun playing with his friends at home, he decided to take them on the road with him, so he did have a band with him. They just seemed to be having a great time. Jackson was as charming as ever. He kept thanking the audience for coming. He still looks amazing too. I love how he talks to the audience throughout the show. Telling stories about how or when he wrote the songs. The opening act was Sarah Watkins. I guess I would describe her as a mix of country and folk. She played the fiddle as well as sang. She and her guitarist came out and played with Jackson for a few songs. I enjoyed her, and I'm not usually a fan of female singers. But I love the fiddle. Jackson played for 2 hours with no break. Some of the songs were Fountain of Sorrow, Call It A Loan, I Am a Child, Something Fine, The Naked Ride Home, and plenty more. I love Jackson!

See, I'm just the opposite - my favorite versions are always the originals w/band, probably because that's the first way I heard them.

Although the album Late For The Sky is said to be a fan favorite, my favorite albums are his first two - Jackson Browne (Saturate Before Using) and For Everyman. They are both so earthy. Listening to those two albums, I can almost feel myself being taken back to the early 70's, one of the most creative times in rock history.

That's an important point - I definitely think we tend to prefer the versions we heard first. I heard Sky Blue and Black acoustic before I heard the original and it is still my favourite. The raw emotion is just so beautiful and still moves me.

Any song that transports you to a different place and time is magical. That's the power of music. Most of the artists I love are able to do that in their songs.

He was taking requests. He would pick up a guitar, and someone would call out a song, and he would say, That sounds good. He'd put the guitar back and go to the piano. The band did play on every song I think. Sometimes one guitar, sometimes two. Sometimes a keyboard. And a few songs with Sarah Watkins and her brother. I highly recommend this show. But then again, I would recommend anything Jackson does!:hilarious:

I understand your frustration!! It ticks me off in such a big way also!!! It's not fair to the TRUE fans and yet no one does a darn thing about it because someone is making money off of it. Sorry, but I truly believe $$ is the bottom line!!!

Listen to what JB says at the very beginning of the video about performing a new song before it's been released. It doesn't seem to bother him, he just states a fact. Also, for Jackson fans like me, he's so cute when he forgets the words and laughs! I love that he just picks up and carries on. I got those two tickets from StubHub and they came yesterday. The other two are from ebay. I had my eye on four tickets together from ebay and then two of them got sold before I decided. (stupid me!) Presale tixs were supposed to have gone an sale yesterday at 3:00 p.m. but TM pulled the event. Tix prices are reasonable. Top price was around $150. There was a posting on KCSN's web about it and also the Calendar section of yesterday's LA Times. Don't know why the event was pulled but it seems as if the concert is a done deal.

Anyway, Tom Petty did a similar concert last year for the station (It's a private radio station part of Cal State Northridge.) He played a smaller venue though-Jackson's concert will be in a bit larger venue-i.e. Valley Performing Arts Center-that only seats 1,700.

The station had a special auction last year for Pit tickets for Petty's concert so I'm wondering if they'll do the same for this one and maybe that's why they pulled the event yesterday afternoon at the last minute to change up the seating choices.

I'm there-be my 64th Birthday present two days early. I share the same BD as Joe save one year.

I'm still not ruling TimmieB completely out as he lives near the venue and one of his kids went to school there. Even if they do play Vegas the night before, its only an hour's flight from LAX to Vegas. Plenty of time to make the concert. Joe may be another story though-have no idea where he lives. Seems strange that the radio station would release a news item to the LA Times stating TBS and JW would be there without confirming the story first. Anyway time will tell.

Seems as if I did very well during yesterday's pre-sale though. Scalpers only got 2 tixs so far in row A and of course they have jacked up all tix prices by several hundred dollars which is nothing unusual for a Jackson Browne concert because they generally sell out fairly quickly here in SoCal. And once sold out-that's it. I lucked out getting a front row seat in April for the Woodie Guthrie tribute but that was a fluke. That's why I didn't risk the general sale just to get one row closer. Bird in the hand is worth two Jacksons in a bush!

I just watched Jackson on Jimmy Fallon. I had to DVR it. I never would have made it that late! He sounded great, but why don't they talk to musicians on those shows? The guitar player was the one on his tour.

Benefit Concert Info Update:

Jackson's website is now reporting that "KCSN previously reported Eagles’ Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit might sit in for a song or two." So what that means is anybody's guess. I hoping the maybe becomes a reality but not sure. Time will tell.

As expected Jackson's benefit concert for KCSN at Northridge is almost completely sold out. Once Jackson posted the event on his web-site this past Sunday tickets literally flew out the door. All in less than a week. What can I say, L.A. loves Jackson! :thumbsup:
