Just have to say---I've been listening to The Bridge on Sirius the last couple of days and they play a lot of Jackson. Every time I hear a Jackson song, I get excited for Brooke & PM. :hilarious: Right now they're playing Shaky Town and I have a big smile on my face.

Broke down and bought a Pit ticket in the second row via the KCSN Charity Auction (actually no one is in front of me so its a front row seat) for the Northridge show after I found out the Pit is separated from the rest of the orchestra section by a waist high partition! Too old to jump barriers and it doesn't look as if you can get through the partition from the rest of the orchestra either. Seems as if it has a separate entrance. Only paid $15 over face.

The auction is now closed but I'd bet dollars to donuts that a few of the auction seats will be up for grabs on TM sooner or later because some people bid and won multiple sets of tickets which is a no-no. Some of those seats are in the front row! So if you still want a good seat keep watching TM and the auction web-site. They may try and re-auction some of the tickets-FYI a couple tickets didn't even sell!

Now let's hope TimmieB and Joe show up too. What a nice 64th birthday present that'll be!:birthday:

As I've said, I've seen his solo acoustic show twice, but I really wanted to see him with a band again. Your description of your show whet my appetite to see him during this tour.

10 DAYS indeed, Brooke!

Awesome video, Pm! JB looks fantastic in that! Thanks!

I guess Jackson, Graham Nash, and David Crosby are very good friends. I just finished reading David's first book and he told the story about how Jackson and Graham set up his first 'intervention' to try to get him into rehab. Very caring people after the way David treated them sometimes. It's really amazing that DC survived himself!

Okay, water's on for pasta!

The song I pretty much know he's going to do that I'm looking most forward to is I Am A Child. I just love the harmonica at the end, and I'm finally going to get to hear it live!

I think I've posted this video recently, but it's the only video I can find of it on Youtube.

I've also been thinking about what song I would like to hear. Since Sara Watkins is going to be there and plays the fiddle, I think this would be a good choice. It's a beautiful song with a beautiful message.

You know, I started thinking about another song with a fiddle in it that I would like to hear. It's a really old song called Ready or Not off of Jackson's album, For Everyman. I started looking for youtube videos and found that he performed this song live as recently as October of last year.

Although the solo performance videos do not include the fiddle, I did find out something very interesting while listening to them. Before the song Jackson points out that he didn't perform this song for a long time because the person he wrote it about hated the last verse. The song is the true story about how he met his first wife, Phyllis Major and how he reacted to finding out they were going to have a baby. He admits that the last verse is lame, humorous but not factual (although the rest of the song is) and he finally realized one day that he could still perform the song and just leave out the last verse! So that is what he does.

Here is the original recorded version, followed by a solo version with the story beforehand. BTW, Phyllis Major committed suicide in March of 1976, just a few months after they were married and had their son, Ethan.

Oh, I didn't know that David Lindley had been with him recently. I got to see them together back in 2010. Jackson also had 'his' band with him during that show.

It would be cool if we got a special guest, like Bruce Hornsby and Dawes recently, but honestly, I just want to see JB. In fact, I wish we were seeing a full JB show, instead of just 17-18 songs.

Gosh, I don't know how to start; I guess at the beginning.

We met my husband's brother and his wife and headed for St. Louis at about 1. They were as excited as we were and we listened to JB songs all the way there in the car. We got to our hotel and got checked in then freshened up and had dinner before taking a cab to the Fabulous Fox Theatre. What a beautiful place! I had been there once before, but it was still, well, fabulous! First thing I did was go buy a t-shirt. The show was to start at 8 so about 7:30 we headed for our seats in the 2nd and 3 rows just off center to the left of the stage. Cathy and her husband were already there and 2 of our seats were right beside them so me and my husband took those and the outlaws took the other two. It was wonderful finally meeting and they are such nice people! Of course, I already knew they would be from knowing Cathy here!

Well right smack in front of us was Jackson's piano and to the right of it was a chair, table, and mike set up. He was going to be within 20 feet of us on stage! Right about 8 the lights went down and who came on stage but the man himself to introduce Sara Watkins! OMG, there was Jackson Browne himself in the flesh! A man we had listened to since his very first album came out in 1972 standing right in front of us introducing someone else to sing! He looked amazing! Sooooooo good looking! Still! I have pictures to prove it! They had told us as we came in that we could take pics, but no flash please!

Sara and her brother and the band came out, Jackson seated himself at the piano, and they started right in. She has a beautiful voice and what a talented group they are! She was wonderful on the fiddle! Jackson played piano with them on a couple songs and then came out and joined them on a couple at the end of their set. There was maybe a half hour break while they moved equipment around. My snl and I upgraded our seats to the front row and then Sarah announced Jackson! He came to the piano and fiddled with it a bit and talked some and then took off with Black & White. He was maybe, 14 feet away from us!

Jackson wore dark gray or black straight leg jeans or pants and a dark gray button up shirt that had a dark design in it. Also shiny black boots, almost cowboy boots, but plain. He looked absolutely amazing! He is just gorgeous! :inlove:

I hope Cathy has the set list cause for the life of me I can't remember all the songs. I intended to write them down, but forgot a pen! I know he sang Before the Deluge, Call It A Loan, Your Bright Baby Blues, I'll Do Anything, Fountain of Sorrow, Running on Empty, and Shaky Town. The encores were Take It Easy and The Patriot. He talked to the audience in between. I loved his comments, but he didn't really do requests. He would go to the rack of guitars to pick one out for each song. There must have been twenty there to choose from. It seemed he pretty much had decided what he was going to sing beforehand. He even sang one song he didn't know all the words to so he had a tech bring out the lyrics on paper that had to do with 'Heaven'. He was really cute and sweet with his comments and in a very jovial mood. My snl and I both actually got eye contact with him. My heart must have skipped a beat! :smitten: There were setlists on the floor that I saw afterwards and I tried to ask for one, but the techs never came to the front and I couldn't seem to get their attention to ask them to give me one. I asked a security guy that was standing there, but he was very grouchy and said that wasn't his department! I finally gave up on that because everyone was waiting on me.

I don't know what else to say other than that he was wonderful and I left wanting to hear more. He didn't do some of his most popular songs that I really wanted to hear like Doctor My Eyes, These Days and Jamaica Say You Will. We all agreed that we wanted to see him again and hear those songs. And did I say he looked absolutely amazing? OMG! :smitten:

One more thought, his guitarist Val McCallum was awesome! He also played the harmonica on a song or two and was equally as awesome!
And did I say Jackson was absolutely amazing? I'm now forever in love with him! Glenn may have to take the back seat for a little bit while I bask in the glory of Jackson Browne. Don't worry Glenn, I'll probably be back! Maybe!

Jackson :iloveyou:

Brooke, I am sitting here grinning from ear to ear because your enthusiasm is so infectious! I remember feeling a very similar way when I saw Jackson... He is just so sweet and humble, and SUCH an amazing performer. I'm thrilled you all had such a great time and that you got some gorgeous photos to share with us. Bet you can't wait for the next time now!

I started smiling too when I read how much Brooke is in love with Jackson now. I remember feeling the exact same way after my first JB show and I've never gotten over it! He has a way of making you feel like he's talking just to you. His show is very informal and it's easy to tell that he's such a nice guy. I just love him! :inlove:

I only have two complaints about the show: it was too short (aren't they always?) and I missed a little by entering the song list into my phone and taking some very poor quality pictures. Although I'm glad I have the setlist, I don't like to be distracted at all. I want to be in the moment at all times during the show. It's so easy to start forgetting things immediately afterwards. It all goes by so fast!

It was so nice to finally meet Brooke. I felt like I already knew her. I ended up sitting next to her Hubby when she upgraded to the front row. They are both so nice, as were her BIL and SIL.

So here's the setlist. Nobody had posted one yet so I did. Note that Tokyo Girl was written and performed by Val McCallum, with Jackson sitting down singing backup. I tried to make those notes but setlistfm wouldn't let me.

http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/jackson-browne/2012/the-fabulous-fox-theatre-st-louis-mo-53dab789.html

Jackson mentioned several times how much he enjoys playing The Fox. Somebody's Baby seemed to be spontaneous, as did The Road, which is the song Brooke mentioned that he had the lyrics brought out for. One of the highlights for me was A Child in These Hills, which Jackson said he wrote on his first trip to New York. It featured Val McCallum on harmonica.

One cute moment was when toward the end of the show a female voice called out requesting Your Bright Baby Blues. Jackson calmly replied, "Oh, you missed it. We already did it. Where were you?"

Here's a picture taken outside.

And a couple more of the man himself:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y63/desperado74/Jackson%20Browne/IMG_0027.jpg

Thank you!!! I have to say I've never seen so many acoustic guitars in one show before!!! I counted 15. He has SOOOO many Gibson vintage acoustics. I think he has a signature one with Gibson too.

In the second pic, I'm trying to figure out who the "Strat guy" is. Doesn't look like David Lindley. :hilarious: He does look familiar though. Also doesn't seem to be Mark Goldenberg, either.

Glad it was a great show!!!

Austin, the strat guy is Val McCallum.

Jackson probably only played 3 or 4 of those acoustics. At one of the shows I went to he explained that they are tuned in different keys. Everytime he played one a tech would take it and shortly after return it to its place in the rack.

Awestruck! Perfect way to describe me right now. I already have PJW and I think I got it as we were leaving the theater. The inlaws were so excited about finally getting to see him that they definitely spurred me on.

Also, in the video you can see me and my sil standing in front clapping. Thank you for that Pm. Borderers are the best!

And here's another of the gorgeous Mr. Browne:

As for the post-insert name here-withdrawal, I totally get it. It happens after most concerts I attend! I'm sure you will see Jackson again - hopefully in the near future. It's so fun to go to a show and come away with a renewed love of the performer and their songs.

Thank you!!! I was doing every Google search I could for "Jackson Browne" guitarist but I couldn't find anything about him.

I can't say I blame Jackson for taking a bunch of guitars with him. Although because 99 percent of them are 50s/60s Gibson acoustics, I'd be a bit nervous but he has people to worry about that stuff. :hilarious:

Thanks for the nice words guys!

Love the pics and review Pm! Great finds! I tried to find something....anything and came up with nothing yesterday!

I loved that review especially. Somehow they said what I've been trying to say, and I thinks it's wonderful that JB dug into the catalog to do some less well known songs. Wouldn't we love for that other band that we all know and love to do that?! But still, I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't get to hear my big favorites. Oh well, as much as Jackson seems to love to tour maybe he will come back next year. I was reading on a fan site of his yesterday and he has toured almost constantly for nearly 40 years!

My heart is still caught in my throat and I must follow Willie's lead and ask....did I tell you how much I love Jackson Browne? What a gifted man! Jackson :iloveyou:

Just sold my xtra tix to next Sunday's benefit concert in Northridge, CA.

Someone is probably doing the happy dance right now as I sold it on the cheap ($100) just to at least get some money back. All in all a front row seat cost me $35 more than my 2nd row center orchestra did when I factor in the loss on that ticket-so I'm happy too. And, as usual its another sold-out SoCal show-with or without two Eagles. And, no I'm not giving up hope!

Well - if (or I'll be optimistic and say 'when') Jackson schedules a show near me, I'm definitely going to try to make it. He was in Northern Va. earlier this year, but I opted not to go because I thought it was an acoustic show - definitely will do my homework better next time.

Dreamer, you really must go. I balked at going for a long time because I thought maybe his show would be a downer, but it's not at all. It's really a fun show. And we have been fans since his first album came out.

I will still admit that for me, my first show was the best, because even though he started out with just David Lindley, he had his band with him for most of the show. I will even say this - even though we had front row seats for that first show, they were off to the right, and every other show I've been to since, my seats heve been better, because they were center-stage. I still liked the first show the best! Yes, he had a band with him this last time, but it wasn't as good for me as his regular band (and backup singers). I really wish he would tour next year with his regular band, but it doesn't sound too promising.

As for showtime tonight, it says it's on at 7 Pac. and 10 Eastern time. That's 9 P.M. my time! Warning: you might want to set your DVR - according to my guide, it's on for 3 hours!!! :blueblob:

Well it took me two nights to watch it, but the Jackson Browne/Sara Watkins AXS TV concert was great! It aired live from the Paramount Theatre in Denver, CO. It's a good thing I recorded an extra half hour in case it went over the 3 hour schedule, because it lasted 3 hours and 10 minutes!

Sara Watkins portion of the show lasted 45 minutes, same as mine and Brooke's show on Nov. 2. Then, after a 15 minute intermission (which they filled with two JB videos), Jackson performed for 2 hours and 10 minutes without a break. Although very similar to our show, he did do several different songs that we didn't get. He did a couple of requests and ended with Running On Empty, followed by 3 encores which consisted of Take It Easy, Rock Me On the Water, For A Dancer and Before the Deluge. I'm so thankful he did this, because for me it's almost like having a souvenir of mine and Brooke's show.

It's going to stay on my DVR forever! :-D

Brooke
11-16-2012, 10:24 AM
Mine too, Pm! And it took me two nights to watch it too! I'll be saving it forever! I'm going to try to figure out if I can copy it on a dvd, if that's possible.

Smart thinking on the extra time recording because mine quit right after he messed up on Before the Deluge! Grrrr! So I didn't get the very end, but loved it anyway! That was so funny where he messed that up and couldn't remember his two favorite lines!

He's amazing! Or did I say that already? :hilarious:

It was unfortunate that he messed up the words on Before the Deluge; however, I found it extremely cute that the band messed up giving him that "half a verse", and they had to go through it all over again! And yes, if what Jackson said is true, his favorite lines in Before the Deluge are:

And in the end they traded their tired wings
For the resignation that living brings
And exchanged love’s bright and fragile glow for the glitter and the rouge
And in the moment they were swept before the deluge
--------------------------------------------------------------

I also meant to mention that Jackson's voice was spent! I hope it's temporary. :worried:

I was just on youtube and came across this from 1982. A small part of it is featured in the DVD Going Home, but I've never seen all of this! Jackson looks gorgeous and a fellow Border member might be interested as well, because Kootch is featured throughout. Caution - it's 35 minutes long!

http://youtu.be/KDquZ4xg8uw

I had to trawl through this thread to find this again, but it is so worth it! I needed a Danny fix and I thought that several members of this board would enjoy watching young Jackson again! Do we know if this is available anywhere to buy in full?

Jackson Browne is so awesome!!!!!!!!!! I enjoy his music so much. The first time I have ever heard of him was 11 years ago when I went to a Tom Petty concert. Boy did my ears hear some wonderful music. LOL ever since then I have been following JB's work. Yeah I am 26 years old and I feel like I was born in the wrong era. I love rock-n-roll so much.

I wasn't quite sure where to put this because it features so many different artists, but if you are a Jackson fan (or just a music fan in general!) you need to see this. Here's the link to the first part...

No Nukes 1979 (http://youtu.be/zdys6i904_Y)

The other parts should come up on the YouTube sidebar as you watch. Just within the first five minutes, there is Jackson, James Taylor, Graham Nash, Danny Kortchmar, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon and a whole host of others. Lots of backstage stuff slotted in there at random times too, so you don't want to skip anything!

Troubadour
02-27-2013, 07:01 PM
Okay, I may end up just linking to all of the parts at this rate... lol. I'm watching them for the first time myself right now. CSN are featured a lot in this part. Even the rehearsals... Absolutely love seeing some of my favourite musicians in this candid way!

Jackson is in a boyish mood all the way through this, it seems! Love how he pretends to attack the guy at the conference table. He performs Running on Empty and After the Deluge. Check out the killer smile as a female voice says his name before he walks on stage!

No Nukes 1979 Part 2 (http://youtu.be/x_BrOPtEf7k)

No Nukes 1979 Part 3 (http://youtu.be/-fgLAbvkKeo)

No Nukes 1979 Part 4 (http://youtu.be/eYXebpRFGTU) (JT is so frickin' cute during this performance of Your Smiling Face! This song always makes me happy. Danny is on stage with him, in the red shirt.)

No Nukes 1979 Part 5 (http://youtu.be/g2WXduyydrA) (Graham Nash's kid playing the piano with him = adorable! This part also features a Bruce Springsteen performance.)

No Nukes 1979 part 6 (http://youtu.be/gpVIeKWpclM) (More Bruce.)

Hmm... Part 7 seems to be escaping me at the moment.

Jackson is one heck of a singer/songwriter. Of course, I like the Running on Empty album and (the album that intro'd me to him via MTV) Lawyers in Love (which I nabbed at age 9 on cassette tape in March of '85 and managed to wear out). It's a shame that "joe public" pushed him to underground and he continues to make new music but everyone wants to hear the oldies (I am one of rare who wants to hear new tunes live and also see how new tunes would go over live).

Thanks for posting this T&H! What a cool video.

The first concert I ever saw was Jackson Browne in New Haven, CT in 1978 on the Running on Empty tour. I have seen him many times over the years and he is still so good in concert, particularly the solo shows.

I saw a couple of very memorable solo shows he did at the Barre Opera House in Barre, VT about 6 years ago that he did for a local organization called LACE, which was started by Ariel Zevon, who I did not know was his goddaughter. What a wonderful experience. I was living in Burlington at the time and we were lucky enough to get into both shows. Jackson seemed to really love being in VT and was in great form both nights.

I've always loved his music and it was such a treat to see him in the Eagles documentary. I particularly loved his comments about the Eagles getting their publishing rights back, and the Jack Nicholson HFO concert story.

Love seeing this old video. Brings back such good memories :)

interesting tidbits there!

I saw Jackson last year at the Beacon...it was pretty affordable and there's not really a bad seat in the house..even though I was up in the balcony, it was great!
I have to say, most of the crowd, myself included, were a little disappointed by his setlist I think. not enough of what we wanted to hear.
but I still adore him and had a good time. I snagged an awesome shirt too.

I know what you mean about the setlists for last Fall. I saw Jackson, with the band, at the Newport Folk Festival last Summer and had the same experience. It was like he misread the crowd and played a bunch of slow stuff at the beginning, including this looooooong meandering song that was a tribute to Woody Guthrie. Add rain to that, he really lost a lot of the crowd early on (at least where we were).

I saw him do that only one other time at a Vote for Change show in 2004 when he played before Springsteen, which granted, is no easy task for anyone at a show in NJ. Other than that, he's always been great when I've seen him. I prefer to see the solo shows, as his lyrics shine through so much more when it's just him.

Great shirt that you bought!

Thirsty&Hot
04-01-2013, 11:06 AM
yeah exactly, and he didn't spread out the upbeat and the slow and alternate the hits with the newer/lesser known stuff...it was mostly a slow show.
AND he let some other guy sing an entire song of his own.
and we were like we didn't come here to see this guy play!
originally it was supposed to be a solo show.

I have all of his albums from the 70s and 80s, but I felt like i didn't know a bunch of these.
apart from These Days toward the middle which I love...the crowd didn't really wake up til towards the end..and it had already been like 45 mins to an hour

this was the setlist according to setlist.fm
Black and White
Standing in the Breach
Call It a Loan
The Naked Ride Home
Lawless Avenues
These Days
The Birds of St. Marks
A Child in These Hills
Tokyo Girl
Something Fine
In the Shape of a Heart
Sky Blue and Black
Live Nude Cabaret
The Late Show
I'll Do Anything
Running on Empty

Encore:
Take It Easy
(Eagles cover)
Late for the Sky

it's good to hear that he doesn't always do that...cos I'd love to see him again, but i think he lost my boyfriend on seeing him live. my boyfriend was pretty upset haha.

T&H-

Definitely try to see him again sometime. If you can see a solo show, that would be fantastic. Not only can you sit and appreciate the beauty of his lyrics more, he always seems pretty loose and funny during the solo shows and you are a lot more likely to get a rarity that someone shouts out and he decides to give a try.

I've seen him quite a bit over the years and those solo shows have been my favorites. So unless your boyfriend doesn't like seeing acoustic shows, I think you would both enjoy it!

I also have the AXS TV special of this show still on my DVR...but I'll probably get this because its the show I saw live with Brooke at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in St. Louis!

You live in San Diego and have never seen JB? Well, I thought that was his neck of the woods!

He tours so, so often, I'm sure if you just keep looking, you'll see a show someday!

We've seen him four times. I wish he'd tour with his band again. That was my favorite show.

I'm going to see Jackson in Atlantic City on July 6. I'm trying to figure out how many times I've seen him. At least 15 if I count the time I saw him at the No Nukes shows. Anyone remember that? I usually go to see him with my husband. This time I'm going with 3 girlfriends. a different experience for sure. Why is it that when you get together with old friends, you act like you're 20 years old again?

It doesn't list Sara Watkins for those Atlantic City shows. The shows she's going to be at are listed that way, I think.

I remember the No Nukes shows! I had tickets for one of them, that I had to sell, due to losing a battle with my parents (MSG + school night = sad me) :( Did you go on one of the Springsteen nights? That I missed those is still a source of pain LOL. Love the movie though. It is fantastic.

Jackson is still so good in concert. You'll have a great time.

Where can I get the No Nukes movie? I checked Amazon and it just offers an audio cd.

Wow, I didn't realize it hadn't been released on DVD! I had the VHS years ago and converted it over to DVD.

Looks like someone has put it up on Youtube in 7 parts, if you want to check it out. Here are the Jackson and Bruce parts, which are 2 of the highlights, IMHO. If it's not ok to post youtube links here, I can take them down. It's labeled parts 1 of 7, 2 of 7, etc. on youtube.

SG and zelda, have fun seeing Jackson! I know you will! I've only got to see him once, and met Pm and her hubby there, but it was wonderful! I'd love to see him with his band. He is just so humble and natural acting!

Jackson is very charismatic. He talks to the audience as if he's sitting in your living room. He's very open to requests, and he just laughs if he flubs the words. I had no idea when I saw him for the first time a few years ago that he would become my fave, but his looks, personality, voice and songwriting just do it for me. I plan to wait until he tours with his band to see him again, but you never know!

Agreed PM and Brooke. Love his solo shows. They are so intimate, and he's so loose during them with requests, etc.

Zelda, enjoy! You will have a great time. I think Jackson is also playing in New Brunswick at the beginning of July. I must look into that.

Sorry WF, I intended to respond to this, but I wanted to get the story right. He tells it on his DVD Going Home.

Basically he lived next to a girl who had a piano which had a key that would 'knock' when you played it, making it sound like a double hit of the key. He used that sound to his favor when he wrote Doctor My Eyes. You can hear it in the piano intro and throughout the song. Clever!
