This is one for Moniques Diary

1 night in Cape Town, one in Sun City and one in Johannesburg!

How freaking cool is that?!?!? I just posted this link on Monique's FB so she knows. I'm so excited for her!

She is going MAD. She is performing in her own show that night which she can't get out of! :scowl:

They are playing three nights - I hope she can find a way to get to one of the shows, even if it means traveling. This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance!

She is only free the Jo'burg night. I too hope she will be able to make it, but she says it would be very tight travelling there and getting back for her next performance.

Notice how the article says they will play a two hour concert. I guess they're already warning us that 2012 will be a shorter show!

:-( I thought the same thing when I read the article.... but if it is between no show or a 2 hour show I will take the 2 hour show! It just means I need to see them several times....

More 'shorter shows' which always means the Henley & Walsh show. When will the 'changes' that Joe talked about happen?

Still I am happy for Monique if she can go.

When is it? The link doesn't load for me.

Are my dreams of solo shows fading this soon? :? Seriously.

ETA: OK, I found the dates. April. :|

Life In The Fast Lane is not a 'solo' hit but you could sometimes be forgiven for thinking otherwise.

Hmmm, I've never considered it. I love the story Glenn told in the 60 Minutes interview about hearing Joe playing the riff that is now LITFL. Stories like that reinforce the idea that the band was a solid unit at the time that song was written, which for me helps the song 'feel' like an Eagles song. At the time it was released I thought it sounded like the Eagles taking their sound to another level.

"Life in the Fast Lane" is very much a band song. If you want an Eagles song that plays ilke a solo song live, try "Wasted Time."

I wouldn't be surprised if they shortened their set, but I would still be disappointed.

However, as has been said, shorter shows are better than nothing! Just don't charge more for less, please!

I'm not ruling out solo shows just yet FP, although its inevitable that they will tour for their 40th Anniversary. Again, August would be great if Glenn  does decide to do something solo after the release of After Hours.

I seriously toyed with a rather ambitious travel plan yesterday when I considered heading out to Cape Town, catching the Eagles show and also one of the shows that Monique will be performing in. I'd love to see her live Elvis tribute show. Also having a day or two to sight see. Our schools should be closed for 2 weeks from the end of March for Easter break. BUT it would involve 2 24 hour travel days ((out of about 5 days) and then a colleague dutifully informed me that if wer close for snow days we will have to make up the time the first week in April and we were told not to book anything until we know for definite that we won't be.

But I will NOT be adverse to another trip at some stage next year. (You hear me Glenn ???)

Ok, again I'm probably showing my ignorance at this but I seriously would never consider it NOT a band song? Why would anyone ever consider it a "solo" work? Someone explain, please!

I do agree with Wasted Time tho, I could see that as being more a solo song.

My first thought also.

So wonder if the price changes because of the shorter show? I'd place money that the don't change.

From what I've read, those against LiveNation and TicketMaster merging said that ticket prices would go up, arenas and such would get less money, and the artists' cut of the ticket price would go down. It wouldn't surprise me that in an effort to keep prices from going up, the Eagles just decided to do shorter shows. Or maybe they're keeping the new setlist for a tour that starts here, and perhaps not the festival in NO, later in the year. Then again, maybe three hours was getting to be too much. Or all of the above...

The reason I said that is because now that Henley stands down the front for LITFL it has become almost indistinguishable from all the other Henley/Walsh dominated songs in that part of the set. This is only my opinion & is perhaps somewhat harsh.

To be honest I wasn't very happy when I read this news yesterday because it further reduces any window there may have been for solo shows. If I were to travel again, it would only be to a solo show, not this two hour set from which most of the new songs have vanished. I have now stopped assuming that there were in fact going to be solo shows.

If people think the current setlist is worth seeing, good luck to them, but I would prefer to see changes made. I would hope that VA is right & that there is a 'new' setlist for any US 40th anniversary tour.

Is Don still standing out front for LITFL now? I thought that was only temporary when he had some health problems last year. In any event, I don't think LITFL sounds at all like a solo song. To me, it's Eagles through and through. As far as the other songs on Hotel California, I think Wasted Time may sound a little like a solo song, but you do have the gorgeous background harmonies in it. The song from the album that sounds the most like a solo effort to me is The Last Resort - if I am recalling correctly, that is totally void of any other vocals except Don's.

Personally, I don't think we should draw any assumptions about any other touring based on the announcement of three or fours shows in the spring. I'd rather just have a "wait and see" attitude rather than fill my head with negative thoughts.

When I saw them last December he was down the front playing guitar on LITFL every night. To me that made it seem more like one of his solo songs. The original recording is obviously quintessentially 'Eagles'. If there is really a song in the current setlist which resembles a solo song it is Desperado.

The Last Resort does have backing vocals, towards the end.

I'm not going to make any more assumptions.

Regarding the length of shows, wasn't Las Vegas on the 19th was about 2 hours....or did it just seem that short?

Since it was my first time it is difficult to say, but I would certainly like to see them all together again. But of course they all have lots of great solo stuff too.

I was talking with a guy I buy products for my business from today. I told him about seeing the Eagles recently. He is in Florida and said he was at a Don Henley show, and after the 3rd encore, he finally said "Hey guys, I have to go, I've got an Eagles show in Vegas tomorrow." I didn't get a chance to ask him if that was the 18th or the day before the previous concert in Vegas.

I agree, South Africa is so far from anywhere that it has to be considered as a one-off situation. How cool that they're finally going there, and I really hope Monique gets to see them.

Also with the SA shows being in April - that's before the "official" anniversary, I think? So again it's more likely that they won't be changing anything for it, but will wait until later to launch anything new.

Slate - I wasn't at the Vegas show, but if I'm remembering correctly, I think others here that were there said it was about a two-hour show.

And the only solo show that Don has done recently that was the night before an Eagles show was in St. Petersburg, FL on 11/18 so that must have been the one your friend was referring to.

Gosh, it has been a while since I visited The Border, but I just want to say thank you to all of you for your kind thoughts, words and wishes. It's wonderful to see a thread like this where your friends so far away are thinking of you this way. You are all WONDERFUL. :grouphug:

Unfortunately, as GA has said, I won't be able to make any of the South African concerts. It's just unfortunate that my own shows are clashing with their dates, but I suppose it just wasn't meant to be.

I'm performing 4 nights in a row that week, starting with our opening night of a 10-week tenure at GrandWest Casino in Goodwood, Cape Town, which happens to coincide with the Eagles' Cape Town concert.

I'm not performing on Sunday, 8 April, but that day is one of only 3 rest days I will have until the next show, and in addition, I'm returning to the office on 9 April. I also don't have anyone who can travel to Johannesburg with me, and believe me, I'd sooner travel to London alone than to Johannesburg.

I only had a day to think about it before the tickets went on sale as well - the news broke the day before. Hmph. Oh, how I wish they would add a couple more dates in Cape Town, and make it for the Monday and Tuesday nights that I'm not performing! Waaaaaaaaaah! :weep: :weep: :weep:

I'm trying to be philosophical about it all. Maybe there's something else waiting for me involving the Eagles in the future. I'm trying to focus on the fact that I am blessed for having musical work for 10 weeks in a row at that time. I'm trying to think of a way to contact the boys while they are in Cape Town - if I could just find out at what hotel they will be staying... what to do, what to do. ::headscratch::brickwall:

You all know how I've dreamed of the day the boys would visit South Africa. Now that it's happening... the timing really is rotten. :sigh:

Oh well, I think it hasn't really hit me yet. When all the hype starts just before they arrive, and when I see the reports after their concert, it will hit me. Or maybe I will be just too darn busy and focused on my own shows. I don't know. But yes, I am disappointed - I'm just trying not to be.

:brickwall:

I'm sorry I won't be there for you, boys (especially you, Glenn ), but perhaps I'll see you again, someday...

Wow, Monique, that's too bad. My how things have changed - if they had come in 2007, you would have moved Heaven and earth to go to that Johannesburg show! I'm hoping they add another date as well - it seems so wrong that they would play South Africa and you would not be there. :(

Mrs Frey
12-28-2011, 10:21 AM
Thanks, Soda - I'm hearing you. Back in 2007, though, I had not yet seen them - at least I got to see them in London, albeit nearly 4 years ago now.

In fact, over the last few days I've seriously considered flying to Johannesburg for their concert on 8 April, but the biggest problem is that I don't have anyone to go with me, and to be honest, travelling around Johannesburg on my own does not appeal to me. I worry about my safety.

The timing is just so unfortunate... but I'm really trying to focus on the thought that perhaps there is something better in the pipeline for me, involving the Eagles. Who knows? It might be wishful thinking, but one never knows. Going to the Jo'burg concert just does not feel right to me, and I know that if I force it, it won't do me any good, as much as I'd love to be there. Does that make any sense? :?

Anyway, I hope that the crowds come out in force to support the boys, so that they will consider visiting our shores again.

So the Eagles perform at Cape Town stadium... TONIGHT. Sigh. How I wish I could bring you first hand news of this concert, but sadly it is not to be.

However, I have asked a Facebook friend to take notes of the setlist. She said she will try, but can't promise anything, because she has trouble remembering the titles, hahaha. Anyway, I did try!

I heard a wonderful interview with Joe a couple of days ago from one of our local radio stations, Kfm. I missed it, but was able to listen to it on Facebook. The concert promoter, Big Concerts, posted the interview. He sounded so excited about coming here, and said that all the guys felt that way.

Glenn  and Don were also interviewed for a local magazine programme, "Top Billing", which was broadcast last Tuesday, and repeated last Sunday (when I was able to catch it). Both guys were in great spirits, relaxed, laughing and joking and clearly excited to be visiting South Africa. They plan to do some of the usual things while they're here, such as viewing wildlife. That came from Don.

It was also exciting for me to see the posters of them on street poles when I went cycling over the weekend. I couldn't help breaking into a broad smile as I passed the posters.

I'm wearing my LROOE tour T-shirt today to pay tribute to the boys, even though I can't be at the concert. Of course, I'm gearing up for my own show tonight, supporting my friend James in his "Elvis" production at the Roxy Revue Bar, GrandWest Casino, Goodwood, Cape Town. Tonight is our opening night, and we'll be performing four nights a week for ten weeks. I'll hold the Eagles in my heart throughout my performance tonight.

I had this fantasy that I would bump into one or more of the boys (particularly Glenn ) on the casino grounds on one of the nights we were rehearsing at the Roxy (four times last week, Monday and last night this week), but sadly that didn't happen. Problem is, we were rehearsing, and didn't really make ourselves visible. Perhaps they did visit the casino grounds, who knows...

The article says the shows are not sold out? Is that possible?
I'm sure the show will be fantastic.

Mrs. Frey, sorry you won't be able to attend, but I wish you luck with your own show!!! Congratulations, hope all goes well.

Frustrated that I haven't been able to find a single mention of the Cape Town show. I've been thru every newspaper I can find as well as checking out a few TV and radio links -- to say nothing of YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. Hopefully MF will have something to report. In the meantime, I continue digging!

I know here in DC, concert reviews in the Washington Post are always two days after the concert. I would have thought some radio stations would have reviews, but I guess these days they wait for the wire reports and then all publish the same thing.

Moving right along...it's coming up on 5:00 p.m. Saturday in Sun City/Johannesburg. Nearly showtime! Let's hope we'll see reviews and some social media clips this weekend.
