Well, I'm not ready to vote yet either, but it looks like the battle in this round will be between The One You Love and True Love. As I said before, I think The One You Love is a very pretty song, but I don't like it as much as many of Glenn's other ballads. The melody is not as interesting to me and I wish his understated delivery in the song was more emotive. Now speaking of emotive, Glenn's vocal delivery in True Love is the epitome of emotive passion in a song. This soulful tribute to Memphis blues is simply exceptional. The sax is just awesome as is all of the music in the song. The melody is also terrific, and I love the full stop and restart at the end.

True Love's vocal is stellar, it's got great soul, and I love the full stop towards the end. It's also a terrific sentiment, even if the "she's my buttercup" line goes a bit over the top. ;)

However, The One You Love is smoother and sexier, and the instantly recognizable sax opening can really "get you in the mood." I also love the way he makes that slight change to the chorus at 3:24.

Just in case anyone's forgotten its awesomeness, Check it out:

Ooooh, love it.

To be fair, here's true love as well:

The biggest problem for those of us who love "River of Dreams" is the fact that each round, a split vote can cost us that song. We need to commit and roll with it.

I wish the sweet, ultra-romantic video for River of Dreams was on YouTube. However, you can stream it here if you're in the States:

http://music.yahoo.com/videos/Glenn+Frey/River+Of+Dreams--2162316

Or download it off of Glenn Frey Online (http://glennfreyonline.com/downloads/multimediafunstuffvideo.htm).

This has to at least last until Valentine's Day!

Love all of those videos. I actually like the video for The One You Love better than True Love, but that is definitely not the case for the song themselves as I said earlier. I agree that I would like to save River of Dreams for one or even two more rounds, but it's been difficult to form coalitions since we are all so split on these songs. So I guess the chips will fall where they may. I'm going to go ahead and vote this round I'm not likely to change my mind. Since I find True Love to be a much more interesting, entertaining, and energetic song ...

I cast my vote for The One You Love.

Topkat

I thought we are voting for the song, not the video. Yes, ROD is a nice video, but as a song, I don't think it's as good as TL, or TOYL. But that's my opinion.

UK TimFan

On previous form there will be two more votes for River of dreams.

I like 'The one you love' better than 'True love' so don't really want to vote for TOYL, especially as there are other songs I like less than both of them and therefore would prefer to vote for.
However, in this round, if my vote becomes crucial to save River of dreams then I will vote for TOYL, because I consider RoD better than both TOYL and TL.
On the other hand, if I can vote for TL and save both RoD and TOYL .....

Glennsallnighter
02-16-2012, 03:06 PM
Well IMHO justice has been done because I think of the four songs that are left what I would consider to be the 'top three' of this album are definitely up there and they stand out on their own. River of Dreams is a lovely sincere ballad that touches every emotion. And who wouldn't love to go walking off into the sunset on their River Of Dreams (all the better if it includes Glenn ). But I don't consider it as much a classic or an all rounder as the other three. So for that reason I am voting off 'River Of Dreams' this round.

Although I absolutely LOVE all the remaining songs, we are getting down to the wire so I’m going to start trying to make a case for why I think that You Belong To the City is the best of them all and why I would like to see it win this game.

As I’ve said before, almost all of the songs in the game are very enjoyable and we all have our favorites, but I believe that YBTTC is the most artistic, sophisticated, original, and creative song that Glenn has ever recorded. Here’s why …

The MUSIC – The compelling music helps drive the theme of this song in a way that is rarely seen. One of the most recognizable sax solos ever starts out almost mournfully at the opening before it hits you full force. It is then followed by the steady throbbing beat that makes you feel immersed in the urban life the lyrics describe. The contrast in the pace perfectly fits the song’s conflicting themes of isolation on the busy city streets.

The LYRICS – In a sense, it’s almost like the music drives the lyrics – it makes me wonder what came first – the music or the lyrics?? But one thing I believe for sure – the combination of the two is about as cinematic as you can get in a song. To me, the lyrics, melody, and the cadence of the verses eloquently convey a constant sense of motion, which again ties into the idea of “living in a river of darkness beneath the neon lights”. The way Glenn paints imagery with words in this song is so effective in conveying the mood.

The VOCALS – Glenn’s incredible vocals in this song take the song to yet another level. The awesome understated delivery of the verses in the songs serves to make the sax solos even more potent when they come in. The understated delivery also contrasts with the powerful music to very effectively extenuate the song’s message of loneliness and isolation of the city in the midst of the intoxicating crowds and activity.

I believe this masterfully arranged song is the crowning achievement of Glenn’s solo career. And if everything that I wrote above isn’t enough, this was, deservedly, his biggest and most recognizable hit (along with The Heat Is On). So I’m hoping others will join me in saving YBTTC and send it on to victory in the final round.

Freypower
02-16-2012, 09:57 PM
That's a very compelling argument, Dreamer, except that I would apply everything you wrote to Part Of Me, Part Of You as well. I don't disagree about YTBBC; but POMPOY has more personal significance for me, even if it wasn't a hit and I will never see it played live.

For reasons stated above ...

I cast my vote for Smuggler's Blues.

It's not that I don't love the song because I do. I even named my precious little puppy Smuggler after the song. It's just that I believe YBTTC is the best of the best of Glenn's solo work (I would've named my puppy after this song, but I didn't think it would work. )

Dreamer, I appreciate your impassioned defense and I agree that You Belong to the City is an excellent song. However, I simply prefer the other two. Thus, with a heavy heart...

I cast my vote for You Belong to the City.

"Smuggler's Blues" has those hot guitar licks. It has Glenn doing that sexy growl with his voice. It's a full-on rocker whereas YBTTC is more of a slow cooker - not that there's anything wrong with that, but I love it when Glenn takes it to the wall like he does in SB. I blast this sucker in my car and just rock out.

As for "Part of Me, Part of You".... as I said earlier, it just fills my heart. I love it. I. LOVE. IT. Here's something I wrote about it a while back, and it's still just as true today:

"Part of Me, Part of You" is the kind of song that can change your mood, that can lift you up... the best kind of song, in other words. The sweeping melody that brings you along with it as it rises - "Until we find the bridge across forever - until this grand illusion brings us home"; "Whatever time may take away, it cannot change the way we feel today." Just a couple examples of a song that is moving throughout. And his vocal... what can I say but WOW? It has such power, packs such an emotional impact. This is my absolute favorite of his entire catalog; in fact, it's one of my favorites by ANY artist. EVER.

It's no secret that I'm rooting for "Part of Me, Part of You" to take home the prize in this competition.

Dreamer and Soda, you both provide very stirring arguments for and against these last songs, but alas, I will have to vote with my heart and for the one that gets me.

For those of you who believe that YBTTC is a better song than one or both of these others, I urge you to join in a coalition to save it this round. The only way to do that at this point is to not split the vote and band together to vote for Smuggler’s Blues. Well firstly my humble opinion is that the best three songs on this compilation are left to fight out this battle. Which is just as it should be! And realy I don't mind which song wins even though I love them all. But I just love POMPOY and YBTTC a little bit more! So this round my vote goes for Smugglers Blues.

Well, I guess since there are these posts on this page urging folks to vote for Smuggler’s Blues that I better play it safe and post again for the benefit of those that may not go back and read the previous pages.

In truth, all three of the remaining songs are awesome and it’s natural that people have their favorite for their own personal reasons. I correctly anticipated that this round would be a close, hotly contested battle between two great songs, You Belong To the City and Smuggler’s Blues. So in a previous post, I put some of time and thought into trying to make a strong case for You Belong To the City because I think it is the best song. I wanted to try to give folks some other things to consider who were on the fence. I was also hoping that my post would encourage those who vote for Smuggler’s Blues to rebut my comments and make a case for why they think it deserves to be in the final round. So again, I urge anyone who is conflicted about what to vote for to consider the previous arguments that have been made. I already said which one I think is best and why, and I hope my argument will persuade others. So sorry to repeat myself, but …

Save You Belong To the City!!!

Vote for Smuggler's Blues!!!

Smuggler's Blues deserves to be in the final round because it's so different from Glenn's other work. Until the Strange Weather album he just didn't do songs like this. It has a message, it has brilliant slide guitar & it has one of his best ever vocals. It's just compelling from start to finish. In musical terms I rank the slide guitar above the sax & keyboards, I guess, and I think the vocal is more exciting throughout, as opposed to YBTTC where he sings most of it in a very understated way except for the chorus & bridge. I love the way he sings YBTTC (on the original recording; not so much how he was doing it on the F1 tour or how he did it the second night at Niagara Falls) but he has also given Smuggler's Blues a new dimension now with that slower arrangement (which I know that Soda doesn't like, but it blows me away). Perhaps YBTTC is easier to relate to lyrically; haven't all of us who live in big cities felt like we're alone and yet we belong? But the lyric of SB is timely & accurate & it still packs a punch.

I should say that I saw two of the best performances of both songs in 1995 (you can see what I saw if you watch the Christchurch DVD) and I am very grateful that I did. While I prefer SB I won't mind if YBTTC survives....

as long as it doesn't win. Like Soda, I make no secret of my desire to see POMPOY win this game.

Thanks for your post, FP. You make some good points about Smuggler's Blues and I agree with most of what you said. However, I really don't see where the song is so different from other material that Glenn has recorded. The Strange Weather album aside, he has done several other 'message' songs in his solo career - Soul Searchin', Livin' Right, Common Ground, and, of course, You Belong To the City to name a few.

Smuggler's Blues also has a wildness to it that YBTTC lacks. Whether or not you think that is a good thing depends on your personality!

It's different because it's about a specific political/economic situation. It names countries affected by the drug trade. It also tells a story & not that many of Glenn's solo songs do that because they tend to be about relationships (pre-Strange Weather). The other songs you mention apart from Livin' Right, which is a personal message, are far more abstract. 'Let's all strive to build a new world together' is admirable but does not raise specific issues. I'm not sure what the message of YBTTC is except perhaps that people have to make the best of their situation. I'm not sure that just describing the isolation & loneliness of a city as you pointed out in a previous post, is a 'message' but perhaps this is just semantics. Perhaps the narrative of SB doesn't convey a 'message' either. :-?

I guess you mean 'You Belong To The City' here TK. But you voted according to your convictions as regards SB. And you have every right to do that. Remember too that regardless of what goes down on this vote you will still have a choice for winner. However I feel the meaning of SB is as relevant today as it was when it was written. I can't comment about the USA. But here in Ireland the drug culture and the importation of illegal narcotics is still as big an issue today as it ever was.

Why What is it about the song you dislike? If it has a message it is that the drug trade has spiralled out of control & apparently nothing can be done about it. While this may be uncomfortable to hear, it would appear to be a fact.

The story told in the song is a basic narrative of drug smuggling. I don't see it as condoning drug smuggling in any way. I hope that isn't what you think; apologies if I am wrong.

To me it was a refreshing change for Glenn to write a type of song that a lot of people only associated with Don Henley. But it's Dirty Laundry the band still play, not this song.

I can't defend POMPOY to those who prefer YBTTC. I can only say that the song has deep personal significance for me (it brought me back to Glenn after I tried to give him up) For me it is the standout track of Glenn's solo career and his best non-Eagles vocal, it is incredibly moving and uplifting, yet it can also make me cry. The music for POMPOY builds until it soars, taking your spirits along with it. When I'm in a certain mood, its message of comfort and hope in the face of life's challenges makes me choke up.

When I think about it, YBTTC is almost its diametric opposite in mood and theme; hope vs. hopelessness; peace vs. restlessness; spiritual progression vs. an unrelenting cycle where nothing ever changes; strength through love vs. resignation to perpetual loneliness, even in a crowd. I'm not surprised at the split because different things speak to different people.

The only reason it was unanimous last time was because the only people playing (with the exception of timfan) were hardcore Glenn fans and, as a rule, the hardcores are drawn to the warm glow that emanates from Glenn's impassioned vocal, moving lyrics, and uplifting music in POMPOY. Meanwhile, non-hardcores might appreciate the familiar hit more; it certainly is a worthy song as well. Obviously there are exceptions, but that does seem to be a generalized pattern.

I find this last round really interesting. It will definitely be down to the wire.

Actually, GH, I did in fact tell Glenn that he should perform some songs from Strange Weather in his solo shows. His response to my suggestion was a noncommittal facial smirk. And now, five years later, he has yet to heed my advice.

And now, regarding POMPOY, I agree with everything that has been said. I guess though, I am the exceptional hardcore. In the previous game, I voted for the song even though I stated that I preferred YBTTC. I just thought it would be cool to make the vote unanimous since that had never happened before. I just believe that the music in YBTTC is a bit more dramatic and effective and I prefer Glenn's vocals in the song slightly more than I do in POMPOY. This in no way is intended as a dig against POMPOY though. Both of these songs are magnificent and on a scale of 1 - 5, they are the only two songs in Glenn's solo catalog that I would rate a 5+. As a said previously, I won't be too unhappy no matter what the final outcome is in this game. Both of these songs are HUGE winners in my book!

I would just like to say that I think both "Part Of Me Part Of You" and "You Belong To The City" are excellent songs. Enough has been said about both songs by all of you - I don't really have anything to add.

In the end, "You Belong To The City" is my favourite of the two. I love the song. I love it so much that I'm planning to include it as part of my show repertoire soon. I love to hear Glenn  sing it with his soaring, beautiful voice, and I love to sing it, and only hope that I do it justice.

POMPOY is a beautiful song with beautiful lyrics, and it's a song that has moved me to tears. In the mood I am in now, I will probably cry if I listen to it. Glenn  sings it beautifully, but somehow, I just prefer his vocal in YBTTC, and in the end, I'm a great fan of great vocals, and YBTTC just does it for me.

I don't know if our preferences here have anything to do with being a hard-core fan or not. I consider myself a HUGE fan of Glenn's  - huge enough that I flew all the way to London from South Africa to see him perform with the Eagles four years ago (and I was motivated more by Glenn  than the other boys, as much as I love them too), but I still find myself preferring YBTTC. It may have been a commercial hit, but it doesn't make it any less of a great song.

So, after all that, I cast my vote for YOU BELONG TO THE CITY to win!

I gave the link so that everyone could see the reason why it was a unanimous vote. I should perhaps have also shown the final voting list, because as soda said earlier when talking about 'hardcore fans' and commenting that Mrs Frey had changed her mind about her 'song to win' this time, when you have different people voting you will (usually) get different results.
And that's without anyone changing their mind about which is their favourite song 'at that time'. Witness the number of times people compile their list of '10 favourite songs/albums ever by a/any specific artist/band' and then qualify it by saying 'but it might be different tomorrow'.
I know I changed my mind completely about the order of songs between the 'one week to go' and the start of playing 'Desperado Survivor'.

I wish I had some idea how to convince people how wonderful POMPOY is. I tend to assume people see it the same way I do and that apparently is not the case. :-(
I think that we all say that about our really favourite songs (as opposed to songs that we just 'like a lot').
In each Survivor by the third round I'm usually going :stunned:  :jawdrop: and :headscratch: at the songs people are choosing to vote off. Sometimes I even do it in the first round.

I know it's tough when a song you really love doesn't win - I've certainly been there. Most of the time my favorite doesn't win!

However, it's the journey that I love. I love reading what everyone thinks of songs, why one person likes something and why someone else doesn't, and just having an excuse to discuss the ins and outs of Glenn's work. These Survivors are fun for me even if my favorite goes down the tubes in the first round (although admittedly that doesn't put a smile on my face at the time, lol).

All this to say - don't get too down in the dumps if your fave doesn't pull through. It doesn't make the song any less special and - for me at least - these close rounds are exciting. A unanimous* vote for POMPOY was cool the last time, but this time sure is more suspenseful.

Ha! I sure fooled y'all - being the conniving, nasty, lowlife, poor excuse of a human being that I am ... this was all part of another one of my evil plots to try to throw yet another Survivor game! I will never reveal the song I really love best because I may need it to plan my next dastardly deed!!! :fear:

To celebrate,

Listen to the Glenn perform this in a medley with Lyin' Eyes and Take It Easy:

Osaka 1992

Unfortunately, we don't have any video downloads of Glenn performing the song. He never performed the song live in its entirety - only as part of a medley.

Hope you enjoyed the game. Thanks for playing, everybody!

I will just say, if I may, that I am delighted with this result.

ETA: I was the person who initially mentioned that the first game vote for POMPOY to win had been unanimous. Regardless of how this was achieved, it has never been done before or since, and I thought it was a tribute to how much most people loved the song. As Soda said, the close vote this time may be more representative, but 'it cannot change the way we (we meaning POMPOY fans) feel today'.

And Soda's banner is beautiful. I wish I had the skill to make something like that. All I can do is put text on top of a photo (my current banner was made by someone else).

Congratulations to Part of Me, Part of You - a very deserving winner.

But congratulations to You Belong To the City as well - who knows ... if we did this again next week you may be the winner.

As I said before both songs are winners as far as I'm concerned - the two true masterpieces of Glenn's solo career for me.

Actually, there really are some great songs on this album. It was very difficult for me to vote most of these songs off in any round. I'll post the songs in the order I prefer them as I usually do and if enough folks post their list, I'll compile the results. So here goes ...

1. You Belong to the City (yes, it really is my favorite)
2. Part of Me, Part of You
3. River of Dreams
4. The Heat Is On
5. Smuggler's Blues
6. I've Got Mine
7. True Love
8. Soul Searchin'
9. Common Ground
10. This Way To Happiness
11. Brave New World
12. The One You Love
13. Call on Me
14. Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed
15. Sexy Girl

CONGRATULATIONS TO POMPOY FROM ME TOO

and IMHO a worthy winner!

Although I do love YBTTC too and wouldn't have minded at all it it had been the one to triumph. Who knows, maybe if we do this game again soe time it may be the victor!

This is the order I would place the Solo Collection songs in

1. Part Of Me Part Of You
2. You Belong To The City
3. Smugglers Blues
4. River Of Dreams
5. True Love
6. The Heat Is On
7. Brave New World
8. Whose Been Sleeping In my Bed
9. The One You Love
10 This Way To Happiness
11. Soul Searchin
12. Common Ground
13 Call On me
14. I've Got Mine
15. Sexy Girl

But that is how I feel now! Ask me the same question next week and its quite possible some of the minor placings will be reversed!

Once again, thanks to Soda for all her hard work and dedication getting this Survivor off the ground!!

I reviewed this album on Amazon a few months ago. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/cdp/member-reviews/A3GQO85HEJK8Q0/ref=cm_cr_pr_auth_rev?ie=UTF8&sort_by=MostRecentReview

Congrats to Part of Me, Part of You! :yay:

I'm very happy it came out on top, but YBTTC was my number 2, so it wouldn't have hurt me too bad if it won. Both are very deserving songs, POMPOY just gets me more!

2. You Belong to the City
3. Smugglers Blues
4. River of Dreams
5. I've Got Mine
6. The Heat is On
7. True Love
8. This Way to Happiness
9. The One You Love
10.Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed
11.Soul Searchin'
12.Brave New World

I didn't feel it was right for me to play the game since there are several songs in the collection that I don't know. However, in the later rounds, I was DYING to participate. So here's how I would have voted, separating out the songs I don't know well:

1. Smugglers Blues
2. Part of Me, Part of You
3. Brave New World
4. True Love
5. River of Dreams
6. Soul Searchin'
7. You Belong to the City
8. I've Got Mine
9. The One You Love
10.The Heat is On
11.Sexy Girl

Songs I need to become better acquainted with:

1. This Way to Happiness
2. Who's Been Sleeping In My Bed
3. Call on Me
4. Common Ground

My neighbors do not appreciate Part of Me, Part of You at all. It's difficult to sing and I never let that stop me. For myself, as I mentioned before, it used to be my favorite Glenn song. However since I've just recently seen the movie, seeing Gina Davis and picturing a car going over a cliff has ruined it for me. Smugglers Blues gives me several very nice images to work with, so I'd have to say it's my new fave.

I haven't watched that movie in years but I remember thinking that the song really didn't align with the plot. I just shrugged it off, and the only time I think about it is when I watch the video and wish there were less clips from the movie and more of Glenn!

It's a shame you can't separate the two, VA. I think of Part of Me, Part of You in terms of its emotional impact on my own life in reality, not in terms of the way it plays into the fictional lives of two women in a movie.

Let me give my 2 cents on what POMPOY reminds me of and just recently. Always loved it and thought that the song didn't really go with the movie either and it really never took away from how I liked the song.

Anyways, a few years ago when our son was ready to go off to college, I was stressing about it and how much I was going to miss him. One day I received a text from Soda saying something to the effect that it would all work out and he'd be fine and to remember the song POMPOY. Shortly after that, I put the Strange Weather cd on one afternoon and when that song came on, really listened to the words once again and proceeded to have a good cry. :hilarious: But now I can't listen to it without thinking of it in that context and having a tear come to my eye.

Just a few quick comments before I have to get back to work  -

I really don't mind if POMPOY won the game - I love the song. In fact, after I responded to Soda's comment that I voted for POMPOY the last time, I listened to the song, and it made me cry. I ended up playing it about 3 or 4 times in a row, and each time the tears flowed. It was probably the state of mind I was in at the time, but there you have it - the song has a powerful influence on me.

I don't have the time to compile a top 10 now - I don't even know if I can do that - but here are my top 3 (for now, anyway :)):

1) The Heat Is On
2) You Belong To The City
3) Part Of Me, Part Of You

If it makes you cry that's a good thing. The song is very powerful & very effective when you need a boost. I could do with it now. (Another song that helps me in times of stress is Learn To Be Still).

Well, just like in the game, YBTTC and POMPOY are neck and neck. So congratulations to our top vote-getter so far, You Belong To the City!!! And personally, I'm glad to see The Heat Is On finished much higher in this poll than it did in the game.

Thanks to those who participated. If anyone else wants to still post their list, it's not too late. Go right ahead - I'll update the standings if this happens. One person's vote can totally change the results in these polls.
