http://stevienicks.warnerreprise.com/

I already pre-ordered and eagerly await the "instant download" promised of "Secret Love," the single! I have this demo and it's lovely, but it's a ballad. Looks like the new arrangement rocks!

Their big announcement: touring together.

Quite a step down from touring with Don Henley but oh well. I'll be at at least one show. I probably won't go to more because I have to save up for when Stevie tours to promote her new album, probably this summer. Perhaps at least one new song will sneak into her set on the tour with Rod. One can hope!

The Rod/Stevie dates (aka the "Heart and Soul" tour)

March 20: Bank Atlantic Center (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.)
March 23: St. Pete Times Forum (Tampa, Fla.)
March 24: Philips Arena (Atlanta)
March 26: Madison Square Garden (New York)
March 27: Mohegan Sun Arena (Uncasville, Conn.)
March 30: TD Garden (Boston)
April 1: Bell Centre (Montreal)
April 2: Air Canada Center (Toronto)
April 5: Wells Fargo Center (Philadelphia)
April 9: United Center (Chicago)
April 10: Joe Louis Arena (Detroit)
April 15: US Airways Center (Phoenix)
April 16: Hollywood Bowl (Los Angeles)

I agree with EL - he's not one of my favourites.....but probably as popular in the UK as Don is in the US.....I know who i'd rather see! :-)

I think they're pushing back the release date to give her time to tour with Rod and build up some momentum (and money) before releasing the album. The first single should be available on iTunes in a couple weeks.

I'd agree with you there. I saw Rod many many, years ago as a 'not really a fan', but absolutely loved the show. He had so much energy and really rocked. Of course he's probably slowed down a bit now. ;-) Still should be a great show. :spin:

Huge Stevie Nicks fan here!

Christine McVie and Stevie were the biggest reasons I like Fleetwood Mac so much.... I like Buckingham's songs too but for me the whole Rumours album is my fav.

Thanks for the videos. I liked the old Rod Stewart - not so much the crooner he has become. Hopefully on this tour he will do his good old stuff.

As for Stevie, I'm more of a Stevie in Fleetwood Mac fan than a Stevie solo fan, but it's all good!

Now WHY in Tarnation would YOU be a Stevie Nicks fan Austin? She doesn't play guitar! I myself am a big fan of Hers. I have heard Rumors that she could sing write a little. And that's okay. I don't hold that against her....unless she asks me to!

Me either---I ADORE Rod Stewart and always have. Not to say that if I had to choose between Rod & Don---well it would be Don but still....

Stevie was adorable on Ellen. I'm just glad I remembered to tune in because I never watch the show. Gotta say, it was a great show and Ellen just cracks me up. Loved the bit about the big announcement and that she thought they were having a baby together. :hilarious:

Heheheh lets just say I "love" Stevie circa 1970s! :smitten: You gotta admit that too Mike!:lol::lol:

In all honesty though - she IS my favorite female singer of all time. No joke. And Fleetwood Mac is a great band. I'm like PM, I prefer Stevie in Fleetwood Mac rather than solo.

It appears I may have been too hard on Mr. Stewart! I still think Don Henley has him beat, especially when it comes to singing with Stevie, but it sounds like his set will be enjoyable. Good to know!

Hmmmm... Not sure how I feel about this. I guess I'll wait and hear it first. I'm leaning towards saying it will sound ok because, like FP said, he has that beautiful raspy voice for it. I think my biggest problem will be that it's just NOT Don singing it with her.

Brooke
02-07-2011, 04:25 PM
That will be interesting to hear. I'm sure I will prefer Don's version, but I think Rod will do alright.

I wish they would add a date in Missouri.

Prettymaid

I don't blame Rod for wanting to sing it. While I don't expect his vocals to be as good as Don's, I think most concert goers will like it.

She went back to her natural color briefly during the Tusk era. I will say, though, that the dark red stage lighting is making it appear darker than it really is in that second photo. Here's some others from that time:

I'm back from the Atlanta show and I saw my friend off to Chicago last night. Wow, I'm exhausted, but I had a great time!

BEFORE THE SHOW: STEVIE SIGHTING (SORT-OF)

My friends and I arrived in Atlanta the night before to hang out together at the Four Seasons bar lounge. This was not just because we enjoy overpriced drinks. Whenever Stevie stays in Atlanta, she stays at the Four Seasons (this is no secret; she openly gushes about how wonderful she thinks it is and even lived there for several months in the mid-90s). We hoped to see her walk through the lobby like we did the last time we came to Atlanta - to see Fleetwood Mac in 2003.

We were a group of five, all of us women in our twenties or thirties except for one who was over 60 (although she doesn't look it). She is rather well-off and was staying at the hotel, so it was perfectly natural for us to be there. Nevertheless, the rest of us made sure to dress nicely so we wouldn't stand out like sore thumbs. I even wore my Saudi Arabian gold jewelry, which I rarely break out because it is high purity and therefore "soft." Astonishingly, it seemed to work as the concierge told us "welcome back" when we came to meet our friends at the lounge.

We hung out, drank, and had a good time just talking for a couple hours. Then, my friend who was staying at the hotel said we should head down to the lobby and sit in some chairs there to ensure we saw Stevie walk through (the lounge is up the stairs from the lobby). Now, we had all calculated the time it would approximately take her to get from the prior show in Tampa to Atlanta, assuming she stayed until the end of Rod Stewart's set, so the rest of us said it was too early and we wanted to stay in the lounge and have a few more drinks. She reminded us that perhaps Stevie had left immediately after her own set and therefore might get to Atlanta earlier, so we finally agreed to go downstairs.

Apparently my friend has a "Stevie-sense." Just as we reached the top of the stairs, my friend hissed "THERE SHE IS"! Stevie was walking around the corner to the elevators, but she was already almost there. While my friends saw the back of her head, I who was at the back of the pack barely saw her shadow against the wall. I did, however, see the back of Waddy Wachtel's frizzy mane. BOOOOOO. Thirty seconds earlier...

Discouraged, we all went down to the lobby anyway in the hopes that perhaps one of the backup singers or other backing band members would come by, although we doubted they all stayed there. Besides, the last call at the bar was 11:30 and that time had passed (not that I needed to spend any more money there). We again got to chatting and sure enough, her assistant came by with a cute little dog. The dog ran up to us and we cooed over it. I was determined to act like a normal dog-loving guest but my friend gave away the game by asking, "Is that HER dog?" The assistant, after telling us it wasn't, hurried away. The rest of us were mortified because we had just been BUSTED as poser Stevie fans!

Ah well.

AT THE VENUE

Unable to "wait and see," I had already looked up the setlist from the prior show online and saw that there were no duets as there had been when Don and Stevie co-headlined the "Two Voices" tour. Rod came out for the encore alone, whereas in 2005 Stevie and Don had closed their shows together. Also, Rod's set was a couple songs longer.

At first, I was worried that Stevie was just a glorified opening act, doing her set and then clearing out for Rod's. However, I comforted myself with the fact that their set lists were of comparable length even if her set was shortened from what it would be normally. I guess it doesn't really matter anyway, but I just hated the thought of Stevie playing second fiddle to Rod Stewart.

However, I should say that I have a new appreciation for Rod Stewart after seeing his show. I'm going to go out and buy a "Greatest Hits" I think. Still, I felt nothing like the admiration I felt for Don Henley after leaving the Two Voices show in Chicago. Guess I won't be starting up a Rod Stewart site anytime soon. lol

To everyone's astonishment, the concert started RIGHT on time. The venue was barely half full because many hadn't meandered to their seats yet. The good news was that whoever had the seats next to my friend and I in the fourth row hadn't arrived yet, so she and I slid down to the aisle and had a fantastic view of Stevie.

Rod came out and introduced her with loads of compliments. And shoot, those female Rod Stewart fans put female Eagles fans to shame when it comes to the level of shrill squeals of frantic delight that they emit whenever their idol turns his eyes in their direction. I thought one woman next to me was going to have a fit; she was screaming so much she could barely catch her breath.

STEVIE'S SET

After Rod's gracious introduction, Stevie came out all in black and fringe, her blond hair long and wavy, looking gorgeous.

She started with Fall From Grace, which is a relatively new choice - she used to always open with "Dreams." She was flattening out the high notes but singing the others with power and holding them out a longer time - I think her voice wasn't in top form and she was doing her best to make up for it in other ways. I appreciate her working so hard to give her fans a good show.

The next song was her new single, Secret Love! I had hoped Stevie would be brave enough to do this song and promote her new record instead of just playing old hits, but I wasn't sure if she would go there especially since part of the audience wasn't at the show to see her. Well, she did it and she nailed it!!! GO STEVIE!!! The video for her new song played behind her on a screen and it looked very cool.

On a personal note: my night was made when Stevie made eye contact with me and smiled. I have been to tons of Stevie/Fleetwood Mac shows, and that has never happened to me before! This is especially notable because Stevie very rarely makes eye contact with anyone in the audience (except, obviously, during the "Edge of Seventeen walk," when she makes eye contact with as many people as she can). My friend thought it might be because we knew all the words to the new song and were rocking out when the folks around us weren't - plus, I was wearing a shirt with a lot of glitter on it that sparkled a great deal in the lights. Well, I don't care. I was absolutely thrilled.

Her next song, If Anyone Falls, is not my favorite but it has nice harmonies and Steve sang it very dramatically. The acapella part really works. She made lots of saucy faces and really seemed to be enjoying herself.

Stevie started off her next song, Dreams, with "Here's one you'll know." I guess that was for all the Rod Stewart fans scratching their heads - but hey, at least the venue was much fuller now, so perhaps it was best to save the kickers until the people have found their way into the arena. She plays "Dreams" straight now rather than doing it as a medley with "Outside the Rain" - an improvement, in my opinion.

She introduced Sorcerer by explaining it was about how when she and Lindsey Buckingham first came to Los Angeles in 1970, they were really blown away by the kind of lifestyles people were leading and how it all felt very surreal to them. I'm not sure how well this plays live but I enjoyed it.

After that, it was time for the hit parade. She started it off with Gold Dust Woman. Terrific drama, passionate vocals, and very hot ad libbing at the end. The only disappointment was that the famous howl was more of a strangled growl. Still, the arena was warming up and was pretty much full now (even the people at the end of the row had come). Lots of people were standing up now.

Stand Back - which ironically had been covered by Rod Stewart in the past - brought the house down. Everyone around me was rocking out at this point, even if they were there for Rod. It was my favorite song of the night. Stevie sang it with such spirit, even doing high kicks and dancing around. LOVED IT.

Rhiannon starts with an extended piano intro so that Stevie can change into her beautiful Rhiannon dress with the draping sleeves to perform it. The current arrangement - a slow, dramatic first verse, then kicking it into high gear for the rest of the song - works really well. She really thew herself into it and that's what makes it great.

Landslide was absolutely magnificent. As she sang, a slideshow behind her showed photos of her growing up - her family - her life, starting from when she was little baby to today. The lines "Time makes you bolder -children get older - I'm getting older, too" become more poignant to me every year. This year has held a lot of changes for me and feel a lot older than I did at this time last year. The song actually made me tear up.

To go from that kind of emotion to the rocker Edge of Seventeen was a bit of a shock - she'd never done that before - but the excitement that opening riff brings will snap you out of any melancholy musings very effectively. My friend and I had already determined that the stage was too far back for Stevie to reach the hands of audience members, meaning there would be no "Edge Walk" and thus we could stay at our seats instead of rushing the stage. She blew it out of the water (except, again, for a disappointing howl) and the way she was flinging her hair around, I thought she'd get dizzy! It was awesome! When it was time for where the Edge Walk would traditionally be, she instead walked along the stage and paused to wave to every section of the crowd (kind of like the Eagles do at the end of the shows, except for a longer time). The extra cheering from each section as she waved showed her how much we appreciated it! She finished with some great adlibbing and then, at the last beat, fully bowed so that her hair draped all around, then quickly stood up and flung her hair back. It was tres sexy!

She went off the stage as we all chanted for her to come back. Then, she returned for her encore: Love Is. She gave a long, bizarre introduction that made it sound like she'd forgotten about the song until looking through old tapes for her new album and that's when she decided to perform it as a closer - but she released the song in 2001! She added that throughout the entirety of her career, only two ballads have closed her shows: "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You" from the beginning until a few years ago, then "Beauty and the Beast." She said that this one, "Love Is," will probably be the last ballad she closes with for the rest of her life. That depressed me - first, I don't like to think of her life ending. Second, "Love Is" is quite inferior to "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You." Also, "Love Is" is a downer song for the most part with lyrics about falling to the floor crying because their wonderful love must end. By contrast, "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything for You" makes your spirit lift with its beautiful theme of encouragement - "If not for me, do it for yourself. If not for me, do it for the world." Still, once Stevie started singing "Love Is," she sold it - especially since she added a verse from a demo version that was not on the released version. What a treat! It's those kind of things that make a live performance extra special.

INTERMISSION

What a show! We were thrilled with the show, but also bummed that it was over so soon. According to all prior reports, Stevie would not be coming back out during Rod's set. While I was relieved Rod would not be butchering Don's part in "Leather and Lace," I did wish they would do an encore together or something. I noticed "Rock and Roll" had been dropped from Stevie's set (she had played it the night before) - maybe they would do an encore together after all? My friend and I hoped for the best, but didn't expect it.

ROD STEWART'S SET

When the curtain rose after intermission, the transformation of the stage was amazing. Stevie has a very bare-bones stage setup - her mic is decorated and she has a screen behind her, but that's it. Rod's stage set up was straight out of a Vegas act. Blindingly white staircases and platforms, eleven backing members all wearing snappy matching clothing - six of them beautiful women in matching red fringe VERY SHORT dresses, and five of them men in snappy suits with red ties. Rod himself was in a suit with a bright red tie, although he would change several times throughout the night into ever-more shiny and colorful clothes (more than Stevie!) He had a screen behind him as well but it flashed bright colors and flames and such when he sang, which added to the visual bang because the white surfaces reflected the colors.

Rod is like a hyperactive kid. He can't stop moving and sometimes his movements are downright spastic. At first it was kind of distracting but once I got used to it, I realized it was kind of a "Rod thing" and people were eating it up. Still, he knows how to work up a crowd. Occasionally he would spank himself or lift us a piece of his shirt just to hear the screams of the ladies reach fever pitch. I was thinking "Take it easy on them, Rod, they're already in hysterics!" lol

Even though I only knew the choruses to most of the songs, I was having a good time. Then.... to my ecstatic delight....

STEVIE CAME BACK OUT TO SING ON A COUPLE OF ROD'S SONGS!

Now me and my friends were the ones in hysterics at this wonderful surprise. Rod again gave her a really complimentary introduction. She was wearing form-fitting pants and I realized that she has really lost some weight. You go, girl! Rod said she'd chosen the two songs they'd do together and they were....

Passion
I didn't recognize this song. Stevie sang parts of it just like she did on Don's songs in the Two Voices tour. While Rod Stewart grabbing Stevie and pulling her to him to sing wasn't as sexy as the Stevie / Don chemistry, it was still cool. I have to say, it was a hoot to see Rod being so hyperactive next to Stevie, and hilarious when she tried to imitate his moments a little.

Young Turks
I only knew the chorus to this song but it was terrific! This time, while Rod was running around the stage, she joined his backing singers and did a Supreme-Like dance with them. That was too awesome!

As she left the stage, I held out hope that she would come back out for an encore with Rod, but that was not to be. Still, FABULOUS show!!!

For the curious, here is what Rod played:

Love Train
Tonight's the Night
Having a Party
Passion - duet with Stevie
Young Turks - duet with Stevie
First Cut is the Deepest
You Wear it Well
Downtown Train
Reason to Believe
Forever Young
You're In My Heart
Sweet Little Rock'n'Roller
Rhythm of my Heart
Have I Told You Lately That I Love You
Hot Legs
Maggie May
Do Ya Think I'm Sexy

I'll post some photos and vids in a bit that others took - I didn't manage any.

ETA: Revised the setlist after my memory being jogged.

Thanks for the review Soda. In Rolling Stone Rod had said he wanted to duet with her on Reason To Believe & The First Cut Is The Deepest. What a shame you got Passion & Young Turks which IMO are two of his most mediocre songs. I have to say that overall that set isn't composed of his best songs.

Re the eye contact: I got eye contact with her briefly when I saw Fleetwood Mac; I think when she was introducing Gold Dust Woman or Dreams.

Loved the review and pictures. Stevie's just as beautiful as ever!!

Soda- you had me worried with....

"At first, I was worried that Stevie was just a glorified opening act, doing her set and then clearing out for Rod's. However, I comforted myself with the fact that their set lists were of comparable length even if her set was shortened from what it would be normally. I guess it doesn't really matter anyway, but I just hated the thought of Stevie playing second fiddle to Rod Stewart."

and

"While I was relieved Rod would not be butchering Don's part in "Leather and Lace," I did wish they would do an encore together or something. I noticed "Rock and Roll" had been dropped from Stevie's set (she had played it the night before) - maybe they would do an encore together after all? My friend and I hoped for the best, but didn't expect it."

I'm very glad you found an appreciation for Rod after all even tho you thought he might "butcher" Leather & Lace. :wink:I was afraid that maybe you were going in just assuming you weren't going to like him that maybe you wouldn't. You said you will be buying his greatest hits but I'm curious on what your perception was after actually seeing him perform. Did you enjoy him and his music?

You said you will be buying his greatest hits but I'm curious on what your perception was after actually seeing him perform. Did you enjoy him and his music?

I will admit that I went in there dubious as to whether I would enjoy Rod's set. Indeed, my friend and I even discussed if we should stay since we thought Stevie wasn't coming back out. However, I did not forget the nice things said about him here, so I stayed - and I'm so glad I did!

There are several songs by Rod Stewart I gained a new appreciation for. In fact, I found something to like about all of them except "Passion" (with the exception of Stevie singing on it, of course), "Hot Legs," and "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy," which I have always thought was pretty lame.

By the way, I always thought "You Wear It Well" was a jingle from a commercial. I remember hearing it advertising perfume or something in the 80s, I think. I never realized it was a real song until this concert!

At least I knew enough to correct my friend who thought that "The First Cut Is the Deepest" was a Sheryl Crow song that Rod was covering.

Believe me, I wouldn't spend my hard-earned money on a CD if I didn't appreciate the music. However, I must admit that I won't be shelling out money to see his solo concerts sans Stevie, even though he is a good showman.

As far as enjoying him as opposed to his music, he seemed to love performing and I always appreciate that. He seems like a fun guy who understands what his fans want and gives it to them - and revels in the way they eat it up! He makes you feel like the concert is just as exciting to him as it is to you. I love that. The only thing I didn't enjoy about him was how he spazzed out so much, making jerky weird hand movements, running in place while waving his arms around - things like that. It was constant and it was distracting. If it were the 1970s or 1980s, I would think he was on some kind of upper.

Thanks for the review, Soda. As far as Rod - I've never been a huge fan of his either and don't think I'd be interested in seeing him solo. The only songs of his that I really like are ...

Maggie May (love it)
Tonight's the Night
You Wear it Well
Forever Young

:nope: Not Rod... The music stands by itself and he doesn't (or never use to anyways) use a bunch of special effects but he has always been hyper on stage-dancing and running around.

From Wikipedia...." With his career in its fifth decade, Stewart has sold over 100 million records worldwide, making him one of the best selling artists of all time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists).[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_stewart#cite_note-4) In the UK, he has garnered six consecutive number one albums (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Album_Chart), and his tally of 62 hit singles (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UK_Singles_Chart) include 31 that reached the top 10, six of which gained the number one position.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_stewart#cite_note-5) He has had 16 top ten singles in the U.S, with four of these reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Hot_100). In 2008, Billboard magazine ranked him the 17th most successful artist on the "The Billboard Hot 100 Top All-Time Artists (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billboard_Hot_100_All-Time_Top_Artists)".[7] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_stewart#cite_note-6) He was voted at #33 in Q Magazine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_%28magazine%29)'s list of the top 100 Greatest Singers of all time.[8] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_stewart#cite_note-7) In 1994, Stewart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_and_Roll_Hall_of_Fame).[9] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_stewart#cite_note-8)"

I'd say numbers like 100 million records sold, 62 hit singles & 31 top 10 singles kinda speaks volumes.

Rod said in a recent interview he wanted to do this song but that Stevie said no, that she thought it belonged to Don. Well, obviously she relented.

Look, I love that song and even just hearing those opening notes puts a smile on my face.

BUT

No, it didn't work for me. Rod's voice isn't made for that kind of song. Sorry, me no likee. Plus, dude needs to learn the lyrics.... or at least read the teleprompter less clumsily. I saw him and Stevie using one in Atlanta - so there's no excuse!

He could have rocked Stop Dragging My Heart Around but he's been fixated on doing L&L and haranguing Stevie about it since the tour started. Ah well, it was not horrific. Just not that good.

I agree with Soda. Even before I read her post I was thinking,"Seriously, the man can't learn the lyrics to his part of the song?"

To me he looked very uncomfortable with his hand in his pocket. Talk about no chemistry. She might as well be singing to a goldfish! And his phrasing was all wrong. I realize that could be attributed to artistic license, but since he was obviously reading from a teleprompter I hightly doubt it.

I initially had no problem with them doing this together. I thought Rod's raspy voice would 'put me in mind of' Don's vocal. But it was awful...just awful.

Oh yeah, he mentioned it in several. Here's just one example:

But he also said he hates rehearsing - he wants to be "spontaneous" - so he doesn't want to spend a lot of time rehearsing L&L with her. Well, it showed. He could have at least learned the song better if he wanted to sing it so badly.

If I were her, I wouldn't be too happy, but I hear they've done it at another show, so...

Just got the low-down on the show at the Fleetwood Mac board The Ledge (http://ledge.fleetwoodmac.net) from someone who was there.

He said Rod was willing to rehearse a bit at soundcheck for Stevie's sake, but that during soundcheck, she kept saying she wasn't comfortable with them doing the song.

The guy from the show also said that Stevie was scowling and looking unhappy after the song was over.

It is uncool for Rod to pressure Stevie into doing a song with him she doesn't want to do.

Still, they have done it a second time, so I guess Stevie dealt with her disappointment. Maybe Rod apologized profusely!

Not with any other man, as far as I know. Back during the Bella Donna tour (1981), she did it solo, just changing the gender of the second verse. I believe she also did it that way a couple times during the Trouble in Shangi-La tour (2001).

Yes - everybody check out Oprah on Wednesday! I have a friend who was at the taping and while Stevie isn't on the whole show, her segment is significant.

From Facebook: Special "intimate" show at Webster Hall in New York.

I want to go to this SO BADLY but I promised a student I'd attend his graduation ceremony and I'm keeping my word. I have three friends who are going, though, and they'll give me the low-down. I'm terribly jealous because Stevie will be playing selections from her new CD which will have only been out a day or two at that point, and some of those she may never play again. Dang it, if it had been any other day!!!

The night’s most meaningful irony was the sizzling Nicks-Crow encore of Led Zeppelin’s 1971 hit “Rock ’n’ Roll.”

Now THAT I would have enjoyed; not Sheryl Crow, who leaves me cold, but Stevie doing Rock'n'Roll. I seem to remember Soda saying she's sung it before.

Yes - she's been doing that song since 2007. She does quite a fun version of it, too! I hardly need say what I think of that review, lol.

Didn't see Oprah!! :scowl: I would of like to seen all those ladies of rock.

Everyone's pretty quiet about the new song, Cheaper Than Free.... So what's everyone thinking? I guess I'll go ahead and give my opinion but I hate to...I really don't care much for it. I've listened to it a couple of times and I can't quite put my finger on why. The beginning really doesn't do a thing for me but it does pick up midway through. I'm sorry! (hangs head in shame)

I saw it and Stevie looked fabulous. She sang Landslide and Sheryl Crow came in and sang with her on it after the first verse. They sounded great together. (Why don't you all like Sheryl?) When they both sat down and talked with Oprah, Sheryl mentioned that Stevie had advised her not to have kids because her songwriting would never be the same and Stevie denied that and seemed a little miffed about it. Oprah moved on to talk with Sheryl about her kids.

Oprah asked her how her skin looked so good and Stevie said she was never one to go to bed with makeup on and quit tanning 20 years ago. (I think she's had work done besides, but she does look great.)

You can probably watch it all on Oprah.com.

I had to miss it because of work - BOOO - but thanks for the run-down. I bet Stevie did say that to Sheryl but was embarrassed about Sheryl bringing that up in front of a bunch of people with children, lol. And I personally like Sheryl.

Regarding her skin - I have never touched softer hands in my life.

ETA: I just watched the video. Stevie is so adorable. I love how she and Christine didn't want to see the guys in the band with groupies so the guys were forced to go elsewhere to get down (although Mick and John have complained that Lindsey never wanted to go party with them lol). I guess the Eagles were fortunate not to have to worry about that! ;)

sodascouts
05-07-2011, 11:38 PM
She's referring to about 1987-1995. Klonopin was initially prescribed to her to help her deal with withdrawl from cocaine, but she quickly became addicted to it and, as it says in that article, she feels the 8 years she was on the drug were the worst of her life.

EaglesKiwi
05-08-2011, 05:31 AM
Thanks, Soda. I was wondering where it fit in terms of writing music - was that a period during which she didn't write or perform as much?

sodascouts
05-08-2011, 04:19 PM
I think one of the most damaging things about Klonopin, at least in Stevie's mind, was that the inertia it caused made her gain weight. For a woman who was used to be considered absolutely beautiful, it was a bitter pill to swallow. I remember watching a Saturday Night Live "Weekend Update" after Fleetwood Mac's performance for the 1993 Clinton inauguration (http://youtu.be/A3JA1nWPFqM) where Stevie was mercilessly mocked for gaining weight. She said that after the tour for Street Angel in 1994, she swore she would never get in front of an audience again because she was so tired of people calling her fat.

She got off Klonopin a year or so later, and lost a great deal of weight as a result. I'm sure that gave her a whole new sense of confidence, especially when Lindsey Buckingham started showing interest in her again in 1997 when in 1993 he pretty much blew her off after the inauguration (although they seemed friendly during it).

As far as her songwriting goes, Street Angel, the album she put out in the throes of her addiction to Klonopin, is not her best. It has a couple poorly done covers, one of which I consider to be one of the worst songs she has ever recorded ("Docklands (http://youtu.be/bIyi376Md2g)"). Her version of Dylan's "Just Like a Woman" is very unimaginative.

Others were mediocre - "Listen to the Rain (http://youtu.be/e8KFkGpbjt0)," "Love Is Like a River," "Kick It (http://youtu.be/uDIfRy4RT6g)", and "Greta (http://youtu.be/e1Ybl2XulDk)" are all unremarkable and the some of the lyrics are so rambling and random as to be nonsensical (especially "Kick It").

However, it is not awful by any means. The song "Blue Denim (http://youtu.be/Xb0IL7oXIXM)" is in my top 15 Stevie solo songs, and I also really enjoy the song "Street Angel." "Maybe Love (http://youtu.be/Vxh8Mh4sV5Y)" and "Unconditional Love", both written by her friend Sandy Stewart, are very good IMHO. "Destiny (http://youtu.be/yrHWdg-u3Sg)" is heartbreakingly beautiful and it helped me through a breakup back in 2000. "Rose Garden (http://youtu.be/wV2DaNlVoHQ)" is a sweet song from her youth. "Jane" is an odd song, but an interesting one.

One song that was left off but released as a Japanese bonus track, "God's Garden (http://youtu.be/HCn_MgTksPE)," is slow and drags a bit but it can be moving if you're in the right mood.

I think Stevie might be a bit melodramatic in blaming the medication for the fact that she never had children. A woman's prime childbearing years are her twenties and thirties, not her forties. During her 20s and 30s, she aborted her babies such as the child she conceived with Don. That's why she doesn't have kids. She "got rid" of them before they could be born. I love Stevie but that's the unvarnished truth.

EaglesKiwi
05-09-2011, 05:00 AM
:grin:Thanks for all the info, Soda!

I hadn't realised she had more than one abortion... however even if she didn't have kids she still has much to be thankful for in her life: her amazing talent, some really interesting life experiences & an enduring friendship with Don Henley (& I'm sure others in the music industry) would compensate for a lot!

And she's certainly beautiful now.

Did you guys watch "The Voice" on NBC tonight? Adam Levine, of Maroon 5, had his two choices sing "Leather and Lace" and I was really impressed with the girl! Her voice actually reminded me of Stevie in a few spots. Adam was very complimentary to Stevie and mentioned Don once too (although only to say that the guy contestant, like himself and Don Henley, had a high voice lol). He talked about what a hard song it was to sing, he seemed to be quite a fan of it and Stevie as well!

Love them! Thank you!!

BTW in Fleetwood Mac shows, Stevie contributes vocals to "Don't Stop" and "World Turning" - both duets with Lindsey - now that Christine is gone. FP - I think you mean "Say You Love Me" right? That's the other Christine song that they did the times I saw them.

I guess it must have been Say You Love Me. I could have sworn it was You Make Loving Fun but I guess it wasn't.

OK, here we go!

First off, I'm SO glad I went. It was a once-in-a-lifetime concert. Most of those songs Stevie will never perform live again. She did 8 out of the songs on the new album. EIGHT! I never expected so much, even though it was publicized that this was a special "record release party" concert. Wowowowow. It was a hard core fan's dream.

And hardcores we were... every one of us, with the exception of the family, friends, and industry people in the loge above. It was certainly evident in the response - even though these were new songs, we all knew every word and cheered her continually. Happy birthday indeed.

My concert experience started at 5:45 am. The floor was General Admission, and only the first 100 people would get in the pit. My two friends and I were going to make darn sure we would be in that group.

We chose a hotel a block away from the venue (The Wiltern Theater) and, at first light, walked down. While it may seem crazy to arrive 13 hours earlier, we weren't the first! There were five people ahead of us who had arrived even earlier, the first two of which had come down at 3:30 am. Sadly, one of those two invited anyone she knew up to the front of the line so that by the end of the day, there were a dozen people in front of us (there would have been more, but some people graciously declined her invitation and waited in line like everyone else.) But ugh, I can't talk about that without getting pissed off, so let's move on!

They were filming this show for a documentary, and those of us at the front of the line got interviewed. I doubt my non-photogenic self will make the cut - especially since I found myself rambling trying to answer the question "What makes Stevie Nicks special to you?" - but it was still cool.

The Wiltern was apparently unprepared for Stevie fans, because they completely bungled letting us in and there were almost physical fights (I kid you not). Instead of letting us in single file in the order we were lined up, they just threw open the doors and started taking tickets - if you were able to shove up to a ticket-taker before someone who had been in front of you in line, you were let in earlier. Because I am not a shover, I wound up being about 30th into the venue. However, I did have one thing on my side. I can run in platform boots. As a result, I still managed to get a spot right by the stage and by my friends. Catty-corner to me, two women were fighting over who got to a certain spot first, and one woman who had come up from the back of the line at was at the stage was getting railed at by several people. It was unpleasant but she deserved it. Still, I couldn't wait for Stevie to come out so we could forget all of that!

Wait we did, though, for almost an hour. As we did, we turned toward the loge and tried to spot celebrities. I saw Andy Garcia, Reese Witherspoon, Mick Fleetwood and Lindsey Buckingham. When Lindsey and Mick came in, a huge cheer went through the crowd! Perez Hilton and Michelle Branch were also there.

Finally, she came out at about 8:15, looking absolutely radiant as the photos already posted attest. She was introduced by her brother in the exact same way her father introduced her for her first ever solo concert in 1981, which was also performed at the Wiltern. How appropriate!

She did "Stand Back" right off the bat without preamble, which always gets the crowd moving. After we rocked out to that, she started talking. She told us it was a special night for her and that she was really nervous about doing all these new songs, but hoped we would bear with her. She said that The Wiltern was very special because it was not only where she performed her first solo show, but it was also where she and Lindsey first rehearsed with Fleetwood Mac in 1975, right after they joined the band. She said it hadn't changed much. I had no idea this venue was that historical, and it made the night even more special for me as well!

She next performed the song "Annabel Lee" off of her new album. It was a song that had been circulating as a demo amongst fans for a decade, so many of us would have known it even if it hadn't been on In Your Dreams. As she watched us all sing along with every word, she looked delighted. After she finished the song and we were all cheering, she said something to the effect of "It's pretty wild to play a brand new song like that and see this... I've been working on this album for a year and I've been singing it a million times but to come out here..." I doubt she has ever played to a more fervently appreciative audience. We had flown in from all over the country for this show and we all had the new album memorized.

Next was "Dreams." It was a lovely version. Stevie introduced it by saying that throughout all her songs, both with Fleetwood Mac and solo, there was a common thread - which was one of the reason she had decided to name her new album In Your Dreams.

Her next song, "Sorcerer," was written in 1974 for the Buckingham Nicks album that was shelved when she and Lindsey joined Fleetwood Mac in 1975. It was redone and released in 2001 as a duet with Sheryl Crow. Sheryl was not there, but it still sounded great, and with its lyric "Who Found the Lady from the Mountain" led perfectly into her next "new" song, also begun around that time but not completed until last year.

That song was "Moonlight." She said the melody and two of the verses were written in 1974 about herself and Lindsey, and one of the verses was written after she saw the movie Moonlight from the Twilight series. She said Bella and Edward reminded her of herself and Lindsey. While I've never read the Twilight books or been that interested by the movies, it still seemed to fit pretty well and she performed the song very dramatically. Whenever she's into it, I am!

After that, she did "Gold Dust Woman," which was very hot. I was a little disappointed by the flat howl but that was the only musical moment I found lacking the whole night. Otherwise, she was terrific!

Next was "Ghosts Are Gone," another new song. I wasn't that impressed with it on the album but seeing it live, done with such verve, has given me a new appreciation for it. Stevie rocked it! This was also the first appearance of Dave Stewart, the former Eurythmic who had produced her album and played/sung on it as well. He played guitar here.

She brought out her next "special guest" for "Soldier's Angel" - Lindsey Buckingham - after giving a moving introduction about being inspired by her visit to see wounded soldiers and how she had been changed by the experience. She also said that she was unable to record it until she called Lindsey to help her - that he was the only one who could. After hearing this, Lindsey looked so moved he couldn't speak, but simply nodded toward her and embraced her, choking back tears. While the song itself is again not a favorite and the vocals weren't perfect, it was impossible not to be moved. Amazing!

From that, she went into the title track "In Your Dreams," with Dave Stewart back on guitar as well as Peter Stroud. While the audience had been responding to all the new material, this one had us all literally dancing around. It is so catchy! Love it!

Stevie's signature song "Rhiannon" was next, and she came out in her beautiful Rhiannon gear after an extended piano intro and gave it her all.

She went from that into "For What's It Worth," which she said was inspired by a relationship she had after she was getting off Klonopin in 1994 that enabled her to gather the strength to move on with her life and keep performing. She never named the person, but speculation is that she's talking about the ex-drummer from Crosby, Stills, and Nash named Dallas Taylor who ran the rehab she attended. "Forbidden" but likely. She sang it with such feeling that it made me love the song even more. Mike Campell from The Heartbreakers came out and played on this. (Stevie said Tom Petty had made her an "official Heartbreaker" and even given her a badge to prove it lol).

The next song, "Secret Love," has been performed before as the new single. Stevie still insists she can't remember who it's about but hey, it's a good song and I like it!

"Fall from Grace" is a song off of Trouble In Shangri-La and was her next number. On the album it's not a standout but it's fierce live. She called it the "angriest song" she'd ever written but I'd give that honor to some other songs. lol She really threw herself into it - she was on fire!

"Cheaper Than Free," the next song she did, is a duet with Dave Stewart. I loathe this song, but I pretended to be into it for Stevie's sake. Their vocals were great, at least. Besides, even though I didn't like the song, it's always cool to hear something that's never been done live before.

Then, all too soon, the intro to "Edge of Seventeen" began. By now the crowd was absolutely frenzied. Security guards came in and told us to move back from the stage for some reason - didn't anyone tell them that's when Stevie comes to take our hands? Well, they found out the hard way as they were completely overwhelmed when Stevie approached the end of the stage, her hand extended. Yes, I did get to grasp it for a second as she came by me; I met her eyes and said "Thank you." She smiled. All along, people were handing her bouquets - it was fabulous.

As I looked around me and saw the completely enraptured look on every single face, I wondered how Stevie must feel to be the focus of such intense adoration. I've never seen anything like it because I've never been to a show before that was so chock full of hardcores. The vibe was incredible.

She came back out for her encore song, "Love Is." I've always thought this song was a bit of a downer to end with, but nothing could bring me down at that point. She sang it beautifully.

Stevie closed by saying that she would always remember this night - that it was it was one of the most special shows she'd ever done and we were the most special audience she'd ever performed for. The cheers were deafening.

I'll never forget that night either. I LOVE STEVIE NICKS

VERY, very cool! Wish I could have been there - it sounds like it was an amazing show! Great review!

ETA: I just watched the videos - AMAZING! What a great voice AND stage presence I love her outfits and the way she moves onstage. I really would have loved to been at that show!

On a completely unrelated note, Peter Stroud is a really good guitarist. He's played with Henley before (you can see it on the Inside Job Live DVD which sadly I broke and don't have anymore and can't find!). He's started his own amplifier company, 65amps, which Steuart Smith uses in the Eagles now.

How fabulous for you!!! Sounds like it was truly a once in a lifetime experience. I have to hand it to you, though. I think I would have been arrested. If I stood on line for as long as you did and then had to deal with a free for all shoving match to get up front it would NOT have been pretty. Maybe its just the New Yorker in me but I'm pretty sure I would have lost it. Seems like you shook that nonsense off and didn't let it spoil your good time. Good for you! Its hard to describe to people who don't "get it" that being there in that moment in that space is your absolute favorite place to be on the planet. You just have to soak it all in and enjoy the moment. Kudos. When you're 80 years old you're gonna remember that night with a little secret smile on your face.

There was a guy in front of me in line who was screaming so much at these line cutters I thought there was going to be an altercation - but there was little a person could do about it short of physically shoving the cutters back. Even that wasn't practical because there were so many. I just feel lucky I made it to the front!

Yep - that sounds like the ultimate hardcore fan experience. I guess when you get that many hardcore fans in one small area jockeying for position, it's bound to cause some tension. I guess it's naive to expect folks to mind their manners in these situations.

But, glad you had an awesome time, in spite of this, Soda. I'm so glad you got to go to this, and I know you are too.

Thanks for the excellent review Nancy. Wish I could have gone but I've done GA at the Wiltern before and didn't want to put up with the %$&^ that it sounds like you went through. Similar thing happened to me at a John Fogerty event there-GA.

Anyway, glad to hear your perseverance paid off and your vids, by the way, were uber-licous. Thanks and much appreciated.

Can't wait for her tour.

Just watched a couple of the videos and Stevie sounded and looked just great. Of course she always does! Thanks so much for linking to them, Soda!

During Love Is though, a couple guys just kept whistling and calling out during the whole song. How rude for people to do that. I don't know how she kept her place in the song! But she's a professional and came through with flying colors. It was very distracting to me though. I just wonder why some people just have to be like that. They want everyone to notice them! I wanted to listen to Stevie sing!

Oh my gosh, Brooke, I know! That guy and his buddy weren't too far from me. A few times people told him to shut up, which just made him want to shout louder. He was also either drunk or high or both, and perhaps had delusions of Stevie or one of her backup singers (Sharon and Lori) responding to him. Dream on, douchebag!

Memo to loud people calling out to singers and trying to have conversations with them mid-song: THIS SHOW IS NOT ABOUT YOU. SHUT THE HELL UP.

Austin, if you can, you really should try to go to a Stevie Nicks concert. Also, since hardcore straight male Stevie Nicks fans are so rare at concert, they can often pick up dates there from female hardcores!

Here is a terrific photo from the Glamour awards I mentioned above:
