Soda, are those dates just Stevie shows or is it part of hers and Rod Stewart's tour? I'm debating whether or not it's worth going to to the one in CO., because I don't really care for her new album... I like her older stuff a lot better, and she's probably promoting her new material at these shows.

sodascouts
06-20-2011, 01:14 PM
Just her - no Rod. Stevie will probably play 3 new songs, so if that's too much for your tastes, then you shouldn't go. However, Red Rocks is such a historic venue that I've just spent a half an hour trying to find good seats for it. Sadly, I couldn't get what I wanted and now I can't try again for 24 hrs because TM freaking LOCKED ME OUT!

EaglesFanatic

I can handle three new songs lol. I love Red Rocks. That's where the Jethro Tull concert was, and I think it'd be awesome to see her there too. Didn't she film one of her concert DVDs there? And yeah, ticketmaster is a pain... Sorry it locked you out!

Yes -that was Mike Campbell! He co-wrote the song.

She was magnificent! I'm not sure that was the best choice to perform live on this show, but she pulled it off. Can't wait to see what her second song is... I hope it's something from Bella Donna, as that album was released 30 years ago today. "Edge of Seventeen" would be ideal!

They wanted her there to perform her tribute to soldiers, "Soldier's Angel." I'm sure she'll be fine!

Today, my friends and I ate at the Hard Rock Cafe in Denver. There was an entire corner dedicated to Stevie, so we asked to be seated there. Our corner booth was surrounded by Stevie and Fleetwood Mac memorabilia, including a long white dress she wore in 1986 for her DVD filmed at Red Rocks and some hand-written lyrics to an unreleased song. Cool!

And when I looked over my shoulder, what should I see but a portion of the wall dedicated to the Eagles! They had Timothy B. Schmit's bass and an Eagles jacket (the type worn by Felder and Randy in the photo below):

https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/images/eagleskilt.jpg

Theirs was signed by Don Henley.

I got back from the concert a while ago, and I can't sleep with all the energy and excitement from the show! It was so amazing, definitely in the same caliber as the Eagles concert I went to over a year ago. Stevie brought such emotion, and her voice sounded perfect. She had a great balance between new material, Fleetwood Mac songs, and 70s solo hits. Before the concert I didn't care for the stuff on her new CD, but the concert gave me a great appreciation for it, especially the song Soldier's Angel (I think that's what it was called). She told a really touching story about why she wrote the song. Every time she opened her mouth, the sweetest, most gracious words came out. You can see the kind of heart she has. And of course she was dancing around the stage with her usual flowing black getup, until she came out to sing Edge of 17... But I'll get to that later :)

I just about died when she sang Dreams, my favorite Fleetwood Mac song. She also sang Rhiannon and Gold Dust Woman. I think those were the only FM songs she did, but correct me if I'm wrong, Nancy

Later on in the show, two microphones were brought to the front of the stage, at which point I figured that it had to be Leather and Lace. She introduced the song by telling the audience she has a big surprise, and she has brought someone special to sing the next song with her. I was beginning to think Don Henley was going to come out and sing Leather and Lace with her... AND GUESS WHAT! I was completely wrong  She called her voice coach (I think that's who it was) out on the stage to sing it with her, which I thought was very sweet. Don Henley would have been a lot better surprise :shh:

Towards the end of the concert, her two drummers did a fantastic solo percussion session, which built up so much suspense. Then Waddy came out after at least 5 minutes of the drumming, and he started playing that very familiar monotone intro that we all know to be Edge of 17. He didn't go right into the song though, which build up even more suspense. On a side note... It was such a treat to see Waddy Wachtel perform. Now it was probably just my ignorance, but I had no idea he would be playing with her. Anyways, that was so awesome, and he really rocked. Finally Stevie comes out from the back of the stage sporting a whole new white outfit. I'm honestly speechless... All I can say about Edge of 17, is that it was one of the greatest performances I had ever seen, and it just blew me away!

For the life of me I can't remember which song she was referring to, but one of the songs was prefaced with something along the lines of, "This is the only song that I can't remember who I wrote it about. So it shall remain a mystery." I can't remember how she phrased it, but it was pretty funny.

Stevie did a quick mention of her song Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You, which I believe was written about Joe Walsh.

Nancy and I were able to find each other in the swarm of people, and we talked for a few minutes. The show was so lively and enjoyable. It was brilliant. Stevie was brilliant.

I'll try to post some pictures sometime tomorrow :)

Brooke, if you watched the shows about Rally, I can certainly understand why you would be amazed at Stevie coming to Sturgis. However, what they fail to really show on those programs is that the Rally isn't only about rowdy drunks and obnoxious bikers. We probably have close to half a million people in the area right now and the biggest majority are polite, intelligent and consciencious people -- bankers, doctors, lawyers and a vast number of deeply Christian folk. The concert venues (there are three) have their share of bars/beer stands (no different than any venue when you think about it). The Buffalo Chip accommodates about 20,000 people for camping and events but that number doubles for the big shows. We've been out for a few shows, went out for Toby Keith lastnight and it was totally awesome and the crowds are SO receptive. We were just surprised that Stevie is 'second billing' with The Jeff Bridges Band. Her website and concert schedule don't even include Sturgis because tickets are only available thru Rally/Buffalo Chip. We're really looking forward to seeing her.

And on a side note it's nice to see Waddy still playing that old white Les Paul of his. That thing looks really played (and it has been!). He's had that for years now. He also has a nice sunburst Strat he brings out for "Gold Dust Woman" IIRC.

Well, my review, finally! I figured I'd better hurry up and write it because I'm about to see Stevie again in Cincinnati on Saturday! (Also, I happened to notice on "This Day in Eagles History" that the Eagles played Red Rocks on this day in 1975).

It was opening night at Red Rocks, Colorado. Stevie had once done a concert here in 1986 released on video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wZ9G-dHRzMc), so the location is already special... but the place is gorgeous... absolutely magnificent. I took some photos before the show:

You had to park pretty far away:

Walking up the mountainside to get to the venue
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/redrocks2011/RedRocksClimb.jpg

The view behind me before the crowd had started really filling in (the place eventually was packed):
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/redrocks2011/RedRocksVenue02.jpg

I was just wow'ed! Amazing!

The opening act was the guy who won America's Got Talent, Michael Grimm. I missed most of his set because that was when I went to talk to EaglesFanatic.

Then the song Stand Back started, Stevie came out in a glorious red cape, and it was time to rock!

The setlist:

Stand Back
Annabel Lee
Dreams
Sorcerer
Moonlight
Gold Dust Woman
Ghosts Are Gone
Soldier's Angel
In Your Dreams
Rhiannon
For What It's Worth
Secret Love
Leather and Lace (done with her vocal coach)
Edge of Seventeen
Love Is

Stevie was "on" right from the get-go. When she came out, she said the concert that she did at Red Rocks in 1986 "saved her life" and the place held a special meaning for her, so she loved being here and thought it was perfect to start her tour at Red Rocks.

EF did a great review, so I won't repeat what she said, but the "mystery" song is "Secret Love." I guess it really is a secret, eh? My friend joked that the reason she can't remember who it was about was because she was dating so many men at the time (it was the 70s lol).

I wasn't sure if "Soldier's Angel" would work without Lindsey and I don't like the song on the album, but after she does that powerful intro about visiting the military hospital and pours her heart into the song (which she called her most "sacred" and "revered"), it's impossible to remain unmoved.

"Leather and Lace" with the vocal coach wasn't really doing it for me, but you could see how thrilled HE was to be actually onstage instead of behind the scenes, so I was happy for him.

The crowning moment of the night for me was "Edge of Seventeen." She came out in a beautiful white dress (unusual for Stevie in recent years). As the song built, the wind picked up, and by the end when she was screaming "I KNOW WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE!" the wind was blowing full-blast like she had freaking summoned it, her hair flying behind her. It was so dramatic and she soaked it up and reflected it back in her voice and it was just WOW.... unforgettable. In fact, despite the fact that I didn't get to touch her hand as she passed by, I think it was the most memorable version of "Edge of Seventeen" I've ever witnessed.

"Love Is" has special meaning for my friend, who just lost her brother to an accidental drug overdose a month ago (he was only 27). It's a song about having to say goodbye to someone that you love, and the grief that comes with that. As Stevie sang, "knowing that it must seem to you like your angel's arms.." my friend started crying. She cried for the rest of the song. I gave her a hug. Later, she said the song helped her with her grief and was very cathartic for her. It's one of the many reasons I love Stevie's music - it can help people heal.

An amazing show - so glad I went!

She looks great in the Edge of Seventeen photo. That's my favorite solo song of her's so I'm sure I would have really enjoyed hearing it (and seeing Stevie in the white dress too!). I've also always wanted to see Waddy Wachtel play. I've always thought that he is seriously underrated as a guitarist.

News just in!

Stevie will be performing 3 of her classic hits on the CBS daytime show "The Talk" on Tuesday (September 13th).

Can anyone say "Edge Of Seventeen"?! :hilarious: Who wants to bet though that it will be like the other shows and be "Rhiannon", "Landslide", and "For What It's Worth". Which isn't a bad lineup don't get me wrong but I REALLY want to hear "Edge". My favorite Stevie solo tune and one of my favorites of hers overall.

sodascouts
09-08-2011, 09:45 PM
Me too, Austin, but before America's Got Talent, Stevie had never performed Edge of Seventeen on a TV show. The reason is that it is a longer song and they usually want something shorter. The night of America's Got Talent also happened to be the 30th anniversary of the release of Stevie's first solo album Bella Donna which featured Edge of Seventeen, so that's why I think she went ahead and did it that night.

However, if she were to do it again, that would be absolutely terrific!

Was just reading the journal entries from Stevie that Soda had linked in the Stevie and Don thread. Very moving.

This entry stuck out to me....

We are a society of broken hearts. My friends said the only time they can forget about it is during the show – and doesn’t that say something for he healing power of music~ for that to be the one thing that almost brings you back to ‘normal’ ~ at least for two hours.

How many times have we all said that?

Does she share all her journal entries or was this an exception?

sodascouts

The Sydney Morning Herald did a brief interview with her (it is not on the website or I would have posted it) and she was adamant that there will be no Fleetwood Mac next year because she is promoting her album. She said For What It's Worth is about someone she had a relationship with but she won't say who.. she is very good at this. :steviesmack:

She's staying at the Radisson. I had a few drinks at the bar there a few years ago. It's down towards the harbour (you can see the bridge in the background). NB: The Herald specifically said that was where she is.

Please excuse the formatting of this as I copied it from a setlist website which links to videos.

It was a great show; overall, however, I honestly thought the solo songs were better than the Fleetwood Mac songs. I thought she was very brave to do so many. For me the highlights of the new songs were Soldier's Angel, which I think may be her best song since Edge Of Seventeen, and Ghosts Are Gone. She was funny & self-deprecating when she talked about how she 'hung out' with Edgar Allen Poe & told him she would write Annabel Lee. She said that the inspiration for Moonlight (A Vampire's Dream) arose the last time she was in Australia & she credited Australia for giving her the inspiration to resume her solo career.

It was weird that she started with Stand Back, which I now associate with Lindsey Buckingham, because when I saw Fleetwood Mac he played the entire song to me. Dreams was somewhat perfunctory. The arrangement for Rhiannon was longer than the Mac version & some of the lyrics were different ('will you even try'). Gold Dust Woman & Landslide were superb.

I managed to get closer to the front for Edge Of Seventeen (my seat was actually in Row 17) but sadly, eagerly as I had anticipated it, it fell somewhat flat. I think I know the studio version too well. I didn't know the last song, Love Is, at all  but I enjoyed it.

Stevie's voice was wonderful & she was in a great mood. She had three costume changes, first a red dress, then black, then white, with the occasional shawl & top hat. It was weird to see Waddy Wachtel, who I saw with Joe back in 1986, and it was also good to see Lori & Sharon, her backing singers. Dave Stewart played on the occasional song.

As for Leather & Lace with her vocal coach, it was OK, but I have to admit here that I am not a huge fan of the song. I know I should be but there you are. I was actually surprised there weren't a couple more songs from earlier albums like Talk To Me or Rooms On Fire. I was even more surprised there was no Sara (but again, this is not one of my favourites). No Gypsy, either.

Sadly the night was somewhat marred by a fight directly in front of me between two men who had been verballing each other. This was at the start of For What It's Worth. Even though they were ejected they both returned later. Also I noticed quite a few gay men. Stevie has become a gay icon, it seems, in Sydney at least!

Well, I'm glad you enjoyed the show overall, FP. Stevie hasn't performed "Talk to Me" for quite some time - maybe it's difficult to sing?

I love the live version of "Edge of Seventeen" but I can see how it might get overlong for those used to the studio version. Still, she rocks it so hard every night that I eat it up!

As for the gay guys - she is a gay icon everywhere. They are drawn to her dynamic personality, sense of drama, and love of costumes, perhaps. Who knows?

Oh, she rocked Edge Of Seventeen; I was probably a bit over-critical there. I was a bit bemused by the percussion solo which preceded it.

I forgot to say that before Love Is she sang Rock & Roll. That's Led Zeppelin's Rock & Roll. While I was aware that she has sung it, I was taken completely by surprise. It was totally awesome & the audience loved it.

I tried to see when it was recorded but it went by to fast. Do you know when the concert was held?
Her bass player lived in Superior when he was in his early teens. It was fun seeing what a good looking man he has turned out to be. He was interested in music when he lived here and had a small band. If I remember right he played guitar and was the lead singer. Back then we called him Alfred but I see now he goes by Al Ortiz.

Az, I looked back through this thread and Soda mentioned that she had gone to the taping and that it was being shown on PBS on 7/17/2008, so it was recorded before that.

Seems impossible that it's been that long.

Looking at Stevie, I can believe that it was in 2008. She also didn't do any songs from her last CD.
I think that when they marked it as NEW, they were just saying that it was the first time that HDNET had aired it.

Poor Stevie. She and her mother were very close, and since her father passed away in 2005, it must be especially difficult.

I have met Barbara Nicks once, and she was very gracious and kind. When she happened to be at the same hospital as a sick friend of mine who she had been told was a big Stevie fan, she stopped by and visited with her, giving her Stevie's best wishes for her health. What a lady.

RIP.

There was also a clip with a Don Henley mention. (This clip was not with Stevie) Seems like one of the writers on the show has a thing for them?

I just saw Stevie in Detroit last night. It was one of the best Stevie shows I've ever seen!

She had added a few different nuances vocally (something she rarely does) and the vocals were dead on, the howls were fiercer than they've been for the past couple years, and she danced more than usual. She also talked and smiled more than usual. She seems happier and more vibrant. She looked even healthier than before and even more beautiful than ever.

Plus, she added one of my favorite songs off of her 2011 album In Your Dreams that she had only done once before at her birthday Wiltern show last year: "Ghosts Are Gone." In other words, she had a LONGER set than she did last year!

She said she was determined never to just do a "Greatest Hits" tour again, that she planned on releasing more music in the future. I have to admit, I hope some of that goes on a new Fleetwood Mac album instead of just solo albums, but just the fact that she seems eager to make new music is so freaking exciting for fans.

Trivia: Kid Rock was there and she dedicated "Landslide" to him - you might thing that's an odd choice, but that's her established "dedication song" at her shows. She called him "one of her favorite rock'n'roll sons"! Well. She loves to lavish compliments.

I also got to touch her hand at the end, as did my friend who I'd bought a ticket for because this time last year, her brother died, and this time seven years ago, her father died. It was a very emotional moment for her especially. I hope she writes Stevie someday to tell her how her music helped my friend deal with such things, as both died very tragically (overdose and suicide, respectively).

Finally, she mentioned Don! She's doing "Leather and Lace" again using her vocal coach as her duet partner. She joked, "I did this song in 1981 with someone who is much more famous than I am, and I knew he couldn't drop everything to come out and sing this song with me every night when I'm on tour!" Now, I don't know about the "much more famous" thing, but the idea of Don waiting around to appear with her on one song instead of touring with the Eagles made me chuckle! "Sorry, Glenn, Stevie's doing some shows and I gotta be there. Maybe next year." Ah, but hearing that guy did make me year for the "Two Voices" tour and Don and Stevie's exquisite live rendering of the song. I dread hearing Rod Stewart do it with Stevie later this month... shoot, I won't think about that now when I'm on my concert high!

I'll try to find photos later, but today I gotta drive 12 hours back to Memphis. Not fun!

Poor Stevie was sick during this show, but she rocked it like a trooper. Only people who had seen her several times would notice she didn't hold notes as long, and that she sang some notes an octave lower. She sounded terrific to these ears, but I guess she felt she didn't, because she apologized at the end for being sick. She added that she wasn't going to come out and do an encore but she felt she needed to with everyone cheering for her so loudly and feeling such love from the audience, that it would give her strength. There were tears in her eyes as she said this. It was SO SWEET and she NAILED that encore, by the way!

The crowd wasn't as great, but I don't want to type about that, because it makes me so freaking angry. Drunken Rod Stewart fans suck... but more about Stevie!

One thing that she did skip due to being sick was doing "Leather and Lace" with Rod Stewart. What a relief! I was dreading that display, especially since Rod dissed Stevie in the press recently. I never wear concert shirts to shows, but I wore my pink "STEVIE NICKS" shirt with a white-winged dove on it to show Mr. Stewart that Stevie was more than a useful "support act" to some of us. Plus, after seeing it done exquisitely live with the original, Mr. Don Henley, Rod can't compete.

To be fair, though, I do enjoy several of his songs and was singing along. I didn't enjoy him touching himself to the delight of the female fans around me... spanking himself, rubbing himself... but anyway! lol

It is true, however, that for the first time in my life I left during the encore!

To sum up, despite Stevie being sick, it was a lovely show and it really demonstrated her dedication to her fans. We love you, Stevie!

In other news, Stevie's In Your Dreams documentary is coming out! Well I'm back in Memphis safe!

I did over seven hours of driving today and I'm pretty tired, but I'm SO glad I went. I don't have the energy to give all the details now, but the one thing that blew all the fans away was that she performed a song live for the FIRST TIME EVER!!! It is a song called "New Orleans" that she wrote after Katrina and she actually teared up introducing it. To hear a never-before-performed song in such an emotional context... oh my gosh... it was stunningly powerful. She flubbed a few lines since she'd never done it before and apologized, and I was thinking, "You have NOTHING to apologize for! You were incredible!!"

The downside: This was an AARP convention and instead of sweet, friendly older people at the show as I assumed there would be, there were a lot of grumpy, crotchety old non-fans who apparently had gotten tickets as part of an AARP package and couldn't care less about Stevie Nicks. I have never been in a less engaged audience. Most of them just sat there, not even tapping their feet, and stared at her as if they were watching a movie. They didn't even seem to recognize the Rumours material. Most of these people appeared to be in their seventies. They would've been in their 30s or 40s when Fleetwood Mac was all over the radio. How could they not know these songs?! Even a signature song like "Rhiannon" was greeted with blank stares from the majority of attendees that I could see - forget the solo material. The guy on the other side of my friend actually dozed off (admittedly, he looked to be pretty old and it was after 9:00). I hope our guys never wind up playing this convention!

Grumpy old people who aren't fans in the audience??? I don't like the sound of that one.....Wait, a guy fell a sleep!! Oh no.
I'm sure that by this time Stevie has seen it all, so I doubt it would rattle her.

Well, if you were a member of AARP, you could buy a package that included a discounted ticket for the concert as part of the overall price of admission. The ticket didn't even say who the performers were at the time. I guess these people figured attending the concert would be part of the overall "convention experience" and hey, they got a bargain price for the ticket!

I make no further comment. I won't even put in a smiley to give any indication of my opinion.

Yeah, apparently the people who run the AARP are mega-liberal. Melissa Etheridge (who performed before Stevie) was actually all excited about it. She believes that hecklers booing are a "terrific demonstration of our [senior] voice." Mmmkay. I guess all seniors are liberals? My 70-year-old parents sure as heck aren't. Now I know why Daddy discontinued membership.

I personally find booing rude and obnoxious. Nobody forced them to attend his talk, and you can bet the people booing weren't open-minded independents, but rather trolls looking to embarrass him. No matter what your politics, this kind of behavior isn't commendable. It's tacky and ugly. JMHO.

Booing goes on all the time during political speeches. They booed after one comment he made. It's probably even expected. It's never classy, but it does happen.

Now, can we please hear about Stevie's show, & not the grumpy old audience.
I wanna hear what she sang & if she made any small talk between songs. I came here to find out about Stevie!!! What did she say when she introduced her new song??? Was there any reaction to it, or what it was about?
How long was the set?

Also, how was Melissa Etheridge? I'm not really a huge fan, but when I see her on TV, her voice is pretty powerful. I always thought she was a pretty good singer. What did you think of her?

Sorry, Topkat, but the audience did bring the party down and affected my concert experience. That said, I'm happy to move on.

The line-up was Melissa Etheridge, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Nicks.

Melissa Etheridge was first. Her voice was terrific and even though I only knew her hits, I really enjoyed her setlist. I can't remember the names of the songs or anything, but she is obviously very talented. She has a new album out.

Gladys Knight was amazing. She moves and sings like she's 20 and looks fabulous. She did her hits as well as some covers of 20s songs as a "tribute" to her inspirations like Lena Horne. She also did a new song - she's still putting out new material, too! A surprise guest was one of the original Pips - he was a hoot and was gettin' down like James Brown!

Stevie came out and from the outset we knew we weren't going to get a typical show when she was doing songs out of her usual order. The show was atypical in both good and bad ways. The bad: No Edge of Seventeen walk where she touches audience hands, no encore, no background display, no Leather and Lace and - for the first time at a public show that I know of - NO DREAMS. That was akin to Glenn not doing Take It Easy in Niagara.

The good: the novelty of a different setlist order, and the song NEW ORLEANS! That alone was worth the trip. She was so emotional - you could tell she was really touched by the plight of the people during Katrina. However, she was very nervous and afterwards, when she was introducing Soldier's Angel, she was all over the place. The intro wouldn't have made sense to anyone who didn't already know the story about her visit to the Walter Reed Hospital. I was kind of embarrassed for her because she rambled on confusedly for several minutes and I knew many of the non-fans were becoming impatient with her, even going so far as to look at their watches. She also flubbed her timing on Rhiannon and came in too early, which led to her for the first time in years doing a little "Rhiannon dance" during the time when she would normally be singing. She made that mistake into a treat! I think part of the problem may have been there was no teleprompter to act as a safety net for her. Still, she did a terrific job overall.

There were no costume changes, although she did pull out her shawls for Stand Back and Gold Dust Woman.

I'm VERY glad I went to the show because I got to hear "New Orleans." However, aside from that, it wasn't nearly as good as prior shows I've been to. It wasn't because of Stevie - I don't care if she makes some itsy bitsy errors when she sings so powerfully - but because there were less songs (only 8!) and less Stevie showmanship thanks to the constraints of the AARP's setup and timeline. Also, there were several moments of feedback, much to Stevie's and lead guitarist Waddy Wachtel's dismay. The feedback after Edge of Seventeen was so bad that Stevie covered her ears and grimaced, and Waddy looked pissed off. I wish I could be more positive, but there you have it.

The setlist:

1 ) Rock and Roll
2 ) Rhiannon
3 ) Landslide
4 ) Stand Back
5 ) New Orleans
6 ) Gold Dust Woman
7 ) Soldier's Angel
8 ) Edge of Seventeen

More Stevie plans on the horizon, though.... details later!

Thanks for all the details, Soda. Just trying to get back on track here. Sounds like it was an interesting evening. With the 3 acts, you would have to expect the setlist to be shorter.
I didn't know Gladys Knight was there. That's cool. I also wouldn't mind seeing Melissa Etheridge.

I guess you knew that it wasn't going to be a typical Stevie show, but sometimes seeing something a little different is still good. I'm glad you got to hear the new song. I really don't like seeing the same exact show over & over again anyway. What surprised me is the part about the teleprompter? I have never even seen a show with a teleprompter. Does she usually use one? I didn't know that.
Seems like she was a little thrown off by this audience, & the lack of enthusiasm can put a damper on the experience, but you did get to see her & that's always a plus!! A little surprised she didn't do Dreams.
Hope that overall it was a good time!

Sounds like you have some more Stevie plans in the future, so that's fantastic!
