I recently drove to northern Oklahoma to visit some family and I saw a billboard advertising Shiloh Interprises.

Last week as I was running some errands, I spotted a truck that looked just like the one Don drove in the Taking You Home video.

This is definitely a stretch but at the casino I work at, there are many different colors and patterns. It was getting towards the end of my shift and I was standing at a dead table and realized that I was staring at the floor. For a brief second, a swirl on the carpet reminded of the Eagles. Hear me out, in my head I was picturing the big screen during Life's Been Good. I was also seeing this pic in my head. I could be wrong but I think it's during LBG when this pic was taken.

I found this pic online. Someone took this pic inside the casino I work at. Look at the carpet. I don't know if anybody else can see it but the carpet sure did remind me of the guys in concert.

I had to go to Dundalk yesterday which is half way between Dublin and Belfast. On the way I passed a van saying 'Linden Catering Company' and when I got there I saw two different signs saying 'Business as Usual'.

The best bit was when I was bringing the kids ice skating later on. Of course I was wearing my Eagles T-shirt. As we were queueing to buy the tickets a man started talking to me asking me 'which Gig were you at?' It was great to say 'Both'

I went to a friend's house for a special viewing of the six-hour BBC Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth. Both of us appreciate this movie very much. ;) I agreed to bring chips and salsa. So, I go to the local Target and I see tons of different varieties of chips and salsa. Which to get? As I'm trying to decide, I happen to see the "On the Border" brand. I immediately grabbed their salsa and chips and let me say - they're yummy!

Sounds like an excellent decision Soda. I'm sure they were yummy.

Today our local council sent out their bulletin to all the homes in the area. On the back page they put all the cultural and historical events (most free) that they have planned for the next 2 months or so. No. They haven't organised a free Eagles gig, but they have adopted a new slogan

'Be Part of It, Its Part of You'

Hmmmmm! That sounds suspiciously like a certain solo song.......

I guess there must be a Glenn  fan working for the council.

I watched 'The Proposal' at the cinema today, and there was a scene, set in Alaska, with a small dog. The grandma said "Don't put him outside. The eagles will snatch him."

It's so lame, but I couldn't help a smile!

I guest lectured today about establishing alibis in criminal homicide cases. We were picking apart an actual case that occurred from 6-10pm, and I pointed out that one of the witnesses the class hadn't suggested as a possible suspect had been "all alone at the end of the evening" and spontaneously added "the bright lights had faded to blue." Two students and the professor caught the reference and laughed out loud - blank stares from everyone else. Culture, people!

I spent most of yesterday homebound with various Verizon technicians re-doing my FIOS Internet connections to my home (Yea!) (Well, not that it took most of the day, but that I finally am reliably back online...something that has not been the case most of the summer...)

Anyway, no joke, one of the techs at my home was none other than Timmy Schmit! How's that for service? Too bad I didn't realize it till he was gone! :hilarious:

My mum laughed out loud earlier when she was reading a James Patterson book. She then read out to me: "I couldn't work out the song at first... then I realised it was Hotel California. By the way Nora was driving, it should've been Life In The Fast Lane."

Kind of abstract but anyone familiar with the Tim McGraw song "Live Like You Were Dying"? The chorus mentions that the subject went "Rocky Mountain climbing" and "...gave forgiveness [he'd] been denying." Thus... Joe & Don. It also mentions "a bull named Fu Manchu," which makes me think of Travis Tritt's song "Great Day to Be Alive," which brings me to "Take It Easy." Best of all, on the third rendition of the chorus, McGRaw throws in "...and I watched an eagle as it was flying." He's clearly referencing the bird, but I choose to believe otherwise. Reality's subjective, anyway.

I've been doing some writing...short stories and that sort of thing. The problem that I have is my characters all seem to end up with dialog that sounds like an Eagles Concert playlist......i.e.:

"I'm sorry about that, Barbara. I can't tell you why it happened."
"This new job is really interesting but I feel like I've gone from standing in one place to living life in the fast lane."
"You know, there's something sad about all the changes that have taken place since that new manager came on board."

I'M OBSESSED AND I KEEP GOING BACK AND REWRITING THE DIALOGUE WHEN I'M DOING THE EDITS -- FOR OBVIOUS REASONS! (Maybe I should turn off the stereo while I'm writing!?!)

Sometimes I feel cursed...it's tough to have a creative mind and find yourself constantly slipping into "Eagles" mode! I just can't help myself but I've got to tell you that I've had some good laughs all by myself when I go back and read what my characters are saying. It's so automatic sometimes that when I start doing my edits I end up laughing at myself until the tears start to roll!!!!!!!! And my roommate thinks I've absolute lost my mind when that happens. Although I did have my laptop with me on vacation, little did I realize that we would rarely stay in an establishment that had WiFi access (who knew that Yellowstone was trying to stay 'au naturel'?) Anyway, on the day that we were driving through South Dakota (from Mount Rushmore) towards Colorado, out of the blue my husband wanted to bring up Eagles Online Central. It must have dawned on him that I was going through withdrawal, not being able to stay up till all hours of the night on my computer! I realized I must never have called it "The Border" around him, because he referred to our group :grouphug: as "the Eagles have landed"--as in, "I bet you can't wait to get back and tell 'the Eagles have landed' all about the trip, can you?" :hilarious: That was the day I thought about Maleah (SD) and anne-o-gg (CO.)

I hope that reference is not lost on the young-uns here...Neil Armstrong told Mission Control in Houston that "The Eagle has landed" when Apollo 11 landed on the moon in 1969.

And BTW, I am planning to tell you all about our great trip as soon as I get my pix onto the computer, so that I can illustrate as I describe!

ETA: I just realized that this might better be about the little things that remind me of other Borderers, but I can remedy that. The largest mountain peak in Yellowstone is Eagle Mountain, OK?

Too funny, Ev!

Yesterday my husband and I were shopping in a local Lowe's store and What Do I Do With My Heart came on the piped in music. I stopped right there in the midst of the treated lumber and told him to listen, it's the Eagles! He looked at me and rolled his eyes and continued his search for 12 foot 2 x 12's! I stood right there till it was over.

We have had an extremely busy week and I gave up cooking last night so we went to Hacienda Mexican Restaurant for dinner. As soon as I sat down to the table I spotted this.

I pulled out my camera, positioned the little standy thing for it's pretty little picture, all the while my hubby and daughter are staring at me like I have lost my mind. Finally I was asked why I took a picture of it--had to explain we have a thread on the Border, and hubby immediately asks if it had something to do with the Eagles. DUH! They both just shook their head at me. :hilarious:

Hearing the Eagles reminds us of the Eagles, right? I was at our State Fair today and sat down to take a break when over the noise of the crowd I hear the familiar strains of Hotel California! So I followed my ears and found that one of the local radio stations was broadcasting on location and taking requests! The next 30 minutes was filled with several familiar Eagles favorites that others had already asked to hear! Cotton candy and the Eages...what more could a girl ask for!

The very second the lyrics mention the word 'courtyard', for some reason I happened to glance across to the other side of the road, and saw this sign that read 'courtyard'. I think it was the name of a pub or something.

If I had never heard the original I probably would have liked Michael's version as I do enjoy him. However, the original being one of my favourite songs by ant artist, I don't care for Michael's interpretation. I think though, that it does show the strength of the composers' songwriting skills that it can be sung successfully in different styles. I have heard it performed by a marching band & it sounded great :)! JMHO

There were a few posts about this version in the 'Little Things That Remind Me Of The Eagles' thread. I am unable to move them into this forum because I don't moderate it.

For my own part I have no interest in hearing this version. To me only one person can sing the song.

I am not aware that the Eagles have 'denied' people doing cover versions. Could you be more specific?

And the album title is Crazy Love, because it's the Van Morrison song which Buble also covers. I am not interested in hearing that either.

Magical admin powers... which house were you in at Hogwarts? I'd assign each guy a house but hesitate to apply Slytherin to anyone. It's easy to delegate Ravenclaw/Don and Hufflepuff/Tim. Glenn/Gryffindor seems a decent fit, unintentional alliteration notwithstanding. But Slytherin/Joe obviously doesn't work. For my purposes I'll change it to Grinnerin, where, instead of evil, all members expouse the power of practical jokes. We'd have to import the Weasley twins, though; I think they and Joe would prove absolutely inseparable...

TANGENT. SORRY. Not a linear person.

Haha Freypower, tell me how you really feel! I picked up the album because I'd heard Buble covered a Nacio Brown/Arthur Freed song (I'm one of the Golden Era fans) and, scanning the tracklist, encountered HT with an indigestible goulash of trepidation and delight. Concur wholeheartedly with the assessment of the Morrison track, though.

As for the denial, it was an unauthorized presumption on my part. I assumed, since everyone* loves the Eagles and so few people cover them, in addition to that post that mentioned Frenley's general reluctance to so much as grant permission to print lines from their lyrics in books, they must have issued more than a few denials. Some rock band must have wanted to give LITFL the Metallica/"Turn the Page" treatment.

*Another assumption. I suppose I'm the donkey today.

My Harry Potter friends would love you, ABM!

BTW, it's my understanding that an artist can't deny someone the right to cover his song because once something is released, there is a "compulsory license" that allows anyone to re-record the song as long as the songwriter is duly compensated.

I think there are more Eagles covers out there than you realize - I went to the trouble of making a list of them for all of the songs Glenn Frey wrote or co-wrote. It's pretty long! http://www.glennfreyonline.com/solo/coversindex.htm

Thanks a lot soda, now I'm going to spend all afternoon on iTunes. *fabricated eyeroll* No, really; I appreciate the link. Lots of goodies. I think a few more people need to cover "Hotel California" - holy cow.

I was cognizant of the compusory license regarding live concerts but am not aware of one permitting recorded music. To my understanding the compulsory license involves only the "public performance" portion of a song's copyright, not the right to actually create, press and distribute your own version on a phonograph (CD). Whoever holds that portion of the copyright has to issue explicit permission - usually it's the record company, hence all the Countdown Singers dopplegangers and the appeal of independent labels.

I'm splitting straws, though. Bottom line is I have new material to download on the iPod. Yay!

I wouldn't advise listening to ALL of those suckers (although I imagine you wouldn't anyway, since it would add up monetarily). Michael Buble isn't the only one whose cover isn't quite up to par. But hey, you never know, you might like some of 'em if you choose carefully!

Whoever holds that portion of the copyright has to issue explicit permission - usually it's the record company, hence all the Countdown Singers dopplegangers and the appeal of independent labels. I guess it depends on what you mean by "own version." If it's a crazy rearrangement that no longer bears much of a resemblance to the original, you can't do it. But if you stay true to the song, it's OK to release a cover of it even without the consent of the copyright holder - hence, the "compulsory" aspect. It seems weird, doesn't it? I was surprised when I read this information, too, but I did some research and confirmed it.

I think that if you want to use the original sound recording, as opposed to using the musical composition to create your own sound recording, you have to obtain permission. Perhaps that's what you're thinking of.

This legal service (http://www.legalmatch.com/law-library/article/music-copyright-compulsory-cover-license.html) is eager to help a cover artist obtain a compulsory license so maybe it's oversimplifying the process, but the service is quick to assure potential clients they need not be concerned about obtaining the consent of the original artist unless doing so gets them a better deal with the royalties.

Today I heard Kelly Clarkson's "Already Gone." While the song shares little with the Eagles song besides the title, they have a similar repetition of "I'm alllllready gone.... alllllready gone" towards the end. It's only everything else that's different, lol.

Still, just hearing the announcer say the title had me all excited, until I realized it was a totally different song. Perhaps that's for the best, though. Kelly Clarkson is no Glenn Frey. lol

I second the praise for Sugarland's "Already Gone." It's almost a waltz; so unique. Fabulous band, fabulous song. Highly recommended.

The border *cough* between country and everything else seems to have blurred significantly.

At this point it seems the only difference between country and rock/pop is the accent of the singer.

I can't help but think of the Houston suburb of the same name whenever I hear the word "Sugarland" - have yet to get adjusted to it being a band!

I like both Sugarland's and Kelly Clarkson's Already Gone. I downloaded both from Itunes after first hearing their songs on the radio. They both get a  from me.

Sunday night at work, I dealt to a guy that was kinda drunk. He was winning and so he started to buy the other players at the table drinks. He was telling my supervisors that he was gonna by them beers and then he looks at me and says "Jessica, I'll get you a Tequila Sunrise." This guy is a regular but has no idea about me and the Eagles. If we were at a bar or some place other than my work, I would have gladly taken him up on the offer.

This was both interesting and maddening all in one! This morning bright and early hubby and I were heading into the city and on the radio they were talking about today's rock birthdays. Of course they mentioned Timothy B Schmit and said he has just put out a new book about his experiences with the Eagles. :woah: Say what? Larry looked at me and asked why I hadn't gotten it yet. I told him because there isn't one that they must be confusing it with the new cd. He asked if I was sure? Well duh, don't you think if there was a new book I (and all of us here) would know? I proceeded to try to call the radio station and set them straight but never did get thru before we made it to where we were going and I was unable to. :brickwall:

My cousin and her hubby are going to see the Oklahoma City Thunder play the LA Lakers tonight and they were asking me what the arena is like since i've been to a few basketball games and concerts there at the Ford Center. Somehow I ended up comparing their seats to an Eagles concert...go figure. They got the picture anyway. I think there's some kind of subconscious impulse to bring up the Eagles in any conversation. I'm not alone in that, am I? :)

TWICE last night while watching tv shows. I don't usually watch that much tv but we are having some AWFUL weather and Larry decided to bring home dinner and we just curled up and watched tv and vegged last night. I wasn't really paying attention to the movie Larry was watching when I heard the first reference, but the character said "I always live my life in the fast lane", and I caught it. The second reference was at the very end of a Bones episodes, they show a piece of paper where someone has written "Heart of the Matter" on it.

Smuggler's Blues
You Belong to the City
All She Wants to Do Is Dance
Boys of Summer
The End of the Innocence
Not Enough Love in the World
Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough
Sunset Grill
Best of My Love
Heartache Tonight
I Can't Tell You Why
Lyin' Eyes
The Sad Cafe
Take It Easy
Take It to the Limit

And yet I didn't even know some of these were songs by the Eagles (although I did know who Glenn and Don were). Such humble beginnings! lol

His voice is very low and soft and reminds me of someone and apparently my husband also. Here is the conversation that was had about it.

Willie: "I like his voice."
Larry: "His voice reminds me of that guy from the Eagles. The 'other guy'?
Willie: "Who?"
Larry: "You know who I'm talking about."
Willie: "No, who?"

One of the local restaurants/clubs periodically sends out E-mails to its patrons who subscribe. The E-mails advertise the upcoming bands & each one asks a musical trivia question, where the winner gets a gift certificate for the restaurant. I answer each question but haven't won anything. This is the question that was asked in the E-mail today:

"Which Eagles member reached #2 on the charts with the song "The Heat is On" from the movie "Beverly Hill's Cop"?"

Hmmm, I'm going to have to look that one up !

I understand it's not about Glenn per se - unlike Don who writes more personal songs, most of Glenn's songs are constructed as stories that don't directly incorporate his own experiences. That's unsurprising, though, when one considers that the lyrics are often mostly written by Jack Tempchin. (I should note that the Strange Weather album deviates from this pattern somewhat, having more songs with personal themes). In fact, it's occurred to me that his ability to give impassioned vocals on songs that aren't about his own experiences might be tied to his ability to act... but I digress.

For me, the problem with "It's Your World Now" is that it's his voice singing those words about dying. I'm glad you can enjoy the song, though. Obviously, that's what Glenn intended.

But as I have said before if it is about dying and only dying, what is with the 'but first a kiss/one glass of wine/just one more dance' part? He sounds pretty healthy there to me. :drunk: I prefer it as a more generalised song about leaving his legacy to the next generation rather than make it so specific. I did that at the start and I thought 'this is ridiculous'. It's him singing, and singing beautifully, as always, and I won't let this interpretation of it get in the way of enjoying the song. I think it's very moving. There are other songs/literature which are like this and if I got upset every time I heard/read them I wouldn't get very far. For instance I was reading my favourite book, War & Peace, at the time of my father's death, specifically the part where Prince Andrei dies (apologies to those who don't know the book) and it helped.

You also made a very broad statement about his solo songs that 'the lyrics are often mostly written by Jack Tempchin'. We don't know that. I don't like stereotyping Glenn as someone who primarily writes music.

Ive always been a dreamer
02-15-2010, 07:01 PM
ITA with you on both points here, FP. As usual, I tend to apply a very broad interpretion when analyzing song lyrics. Therefore, I also think of 'It's Your World Now' more in terms of leaving a legacy to future generations. I love listening to Glenn's voice on the song. While the Latino music is not my favorite, it's still a beautiful song that I very much enjoy.

And I have commented numerous times before on how I feel about stereotyping any of the guys in the band. I think they are all very multi-talented, and never like to make assumptions regarding their contributions or role based on inadequate information.

Hey guys, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to "stereotype" Glenn. I'm not saying he never writes lyrics and I have no idea what the ratio is regarding how many lyrics he writes vs. how many Tempchin writes.

That said, there's no shame in the fact that he might be more musically-oriented. Some people act like it's an insult to say that!

Re: IYWN - of course, everyone's take on "It's Your World Now" is just as legitimate as mine. I'm only saying how it comes across to me. While Glenn has said the guy in the song is dying, I know that doesn't preclude broader interpretations.

I agree - and this has unfortunately happened within the band. Tim says Don Henley is a 'great poet' while Glenn is 'the lone arranger' - and Felder apparently thinks that the only other decent songwriter in the band besides his illustrious self is Henley because Henley 'wrote the words'. The famous nickname Lone Arranger doesn't even allow for the fact that someone (presumably Glenn himself) had to actually write the tunes before he pulled them into shape. Of course it also refers to his leadership skills.

If Glenn is more Elton John than Bernie Taupin in terms of leaning towards music rather than lyrics (and even this is probably unfair, given that Elton does not write lyrics at all), it should be appreciated, not relegated to being of secondary importance.

So, I'm at work at the moment, in town with one of my service users - but I had to post this! You remember that kids' book I told you about ages ago, with the Eagles Garage and the pumps labelled Henley, Frey and Walsh? Well, I've looked for it everywhere over the past year, to no avail. Today, I'm out with a service user, and I decided to have a quick look around a book store. What was right there on the shelf? The Eagles book! I had to buy it - I know a few of you guys wanted to know what it was called. I was almost right - it's Al's Auto Workshop. Anyway, I'll post some pics when I get home! I'm chuffed! I think it was meant to be that I wandered into that shop. :D

Great find Lou! Well done. IMHO I'd have called it 'Irvs Auto Workshop'

Since she didn't add it here, I will. Lou texted me yesterday to tell me that there was also a page with more signs that read "Gilmour", "Wright" and "Mason". For those who don't recognize those names, they are from Pink Floyd. I'm really planning on checking out some more of his books to see if he has rock references in all of them. So cool!

Bob and I were in a cafe this afternoon when I noticed the couple next to us had on bright red t shirts and I saw the word Eagle. So of course I had to check that out. What it said was "Hotel California" in big yellow letters and under it was "A Salute to the Eagles." MUCH to Bob's dismay I told them I really liked their shirts so they told me it was a tribute band that they went and saw in Winslow Az. I told them in 3 weeks I was going to go see the real Eagles. They didn't know about the concert and said they were going to see if they could still get tickets.

I wouldn't need the pharmacy if I were ill, All I'd need was the EAGLE.

Today on my way to my parents I was behind a car with a dark rear window and the letters D O N in white across it.

Then I was reading the paper. There was an article about the funeral of Malcolm McClaren and a photo. His coffin was black and spray painted in white on the side was 'Too fast to live, too young to die'

The chorus of the song is:

They got a love bigger than the Beatles
Wild and free like the Rolling Stones

Sure Brooke. Now it might just be how i interpreted this poem becuase i said it was asking what would happen after all the material good were gone and that ATTIS tells us what happenes after its gone. But here is the poem:

The Nymph's Reply to the Shepherd
by Sir Walter Raleigh
1600
If all the world and love were young,
And truth in every shepherd's tongue,
These pretty pleasures might me move
To live with thee and be thy love.
Time drives the flocks from field to fold,
When rivers rage and rocks grow cold;
And Philomel becometh dumb;
The rest complain of cares to come.
The flowers do fade, and wanton fields
To wayward winter reckoning yields;
A honey tongue, a heart of gall,
Is fancy's spring, but sorrow's fall.
Thy gowns, thy shoes, thy bed of roses,
Thy cap, thy kirtle, and thy posies,
Soon break, soon wither, soon forgotten,
In folly ripe, in reason rotten.
Thy belt of straw and ivy buds,
Thy coral clasps and amber studs,
All these in me no means can move
To come to thee and be thy love.
But could youth last and love still breed,
Had joys no date nor age no need,
Then these delights my mind might move
To live with thee and be thy love.

We've seen quite a few things on this trip that have reminded us of the Eagles. Mainly place names... Donley, Glenrio, Wildorado... Plus the Dancing Eagle casino! Also, Annie said loudly 'Fines Double' from the driver's seat the other day. She was reading a sign. Jess didn't have a clue what she was going on about, and could only hear 'fine stubble'. (You think we have Don on the brain a little too much?!)

We had a funny moment yesterday when we went to the Grand Canyon. The guy at the gate asked us if anyone in the car was 62. After looking mildly offended, I joked to Jess that we should have brought Don along - he could've got us a discount! Darn it.

Something posted in the Joe threads reminded me of albums. I meant to put this on earlier this week.

Saturday night, Larry and I decided to reorganize all our albums and catalog them to make sure we had them all on our list (we didn't). We have a tendency of buying them and then just go ahead and stick them in the albums before we add them to our computer list. ANYWAYS...

We were going alphabetical with Larry at the albums naming them and me checking the master list on the computer to make sure they were on it. When we got to the E's, without missing a beat, instead of naming each Eagles album separately, he just says "several copies of every damn one of them!". I knew exactly who/what he was talking about. He then did the same thing when it was time for the Joe Walsh albums (which was wrong because I really don't have all of them, just most of them!). :hilarious: He's a fuuunnny guy!!:nope:

I guess this isn't a thing that "reminded" me of the Eagles, because it was the Eagles but figured I'd put it here anyways.

Last night, out on the patio listening to a new radio station we have found that plays all classic rock out of Chicago. They played Lyin' Eyes and of course I sang along as I did my Sudoku and Larry read the paper. After it was over Larry dropped the paper down and said "you know that IS country right?" I didn't even look up from my puzzle but flipped him a select finger, he chuckled and continued reading. Some times he really pisses me off!

I wasn't sure where to post this, since in the thread where the game is played seems like it might get lost. We have turned "The Never-Ending Song Game" both into a car travel game, and better yet, into a party game for all ages! The first time we used it as a verbal game was in the car on a longer family road trip. It was played the same way we do online here, and it was interesting because we have the 2 oldster parents and the 2 preteen/teen boys who obviously love current music but have a decent knowledge and appreciation for classic rock music from yours truly and hubby. The game really passes the time away, as it fosters communication between family members-- about music and artists, and memories of concerts and the like.

More recently, we adapted the game at a party--at Ethan's 8th grade graduation party, where there were adults as well as kids (11 yrs + ). We started playing the same way it is played online, but then we had to add some alterations. The first change we added was a 30-second time frame for the person's answer of new song and artist. If they don't guess, or offer an incorrect one, they get an "O". The next time they are unable to advance, they collect an "U." And, if that same persons fails a 3rd time, they get an "T", and they are OUT of the game. This game kept folks occupied for quite awhile!

After just posting in the Hearing Eagles/solo Songs Unexpectedly thread I remembered that I heard another Eagles song at work this week. Heartache Tonight was playing. As I was singing along, one of the players at my table said "How do you know this song? You're too young to know who this is?" I said "Are you kidding me? This is my favorite band!!" I proceeded to tell the guy about the recent concerts I went to an he seemed impressed. I asked him his name and he said it's "Glenn". There was another guy at the table that was all ticked off and being rude because he was mad that he was losing his money. Me and Glenn just ignored him. Glenn was a really nice guy.
