View Full Version : Eagles Documentary - Pre-Release Anticipation

We've discussed this in the individual threads, as all four have talked about this in interviews. I thought maybe it was time to put it all in one thread.
What we know is that it will be a two DVD set directed by Alex Gibney. This link is Wiki's for Alex: http://www.ask.com/wiki/Alex_Gibney. He's won an Academy Award for Taxi To The Dark Side, and has been nominated and short-listed for others.
Glenn has said many times that the first DVD will cover 1970 through 1980, and the second from 1994 to the present. If it's really 1970, then we'll get some 'pre-Eagles' background. I know I'm looking forward to the whole and especially this. So many books have been written about these guys and we've seen the errors in them which makes everything suspect as far as I'm concerned. So it'll be interesting to see what they put out there.
They have all said it'll be for Christmas or the end of the year. Yesterday, Glenn said he doesn't know how it'll play out, it'll be available for 2013, but it might go to theaters or TV first. Then come out on DVD. How cool would that be?

Yes, it would make sense to release it for the Christmas market in terms of sales! I was kinda banking on Santa to drop one in my stocking, but the idea of it broadcast first is tantalising to say the least!

Individually they've said they've seen the footage that was unearthed. I wonder if any of them have seen how Mr. Gibney intends to put it together and what they think of it.

This is so something to look forward to in the NY. The archival footage should be very interesting! Wow, Eagles memories on film from the beginning but man, what a job putting all that together!
I'm so glad the guys have a lot of say here, I heard of a paperback book released several years ago (the name escapes me right now) and this DVD will dispel any inaccuracies from past publications (as someone else here said). I'm really looking forward to finding out the real facts.

Looking forward to the DVD. It would be great if it came out just before Christmas........not too long before though, or it would be impossible to wait for Santa to bring it!
Although I'm excited at what's promised on the DVD, I'd still like to see a DVD of a full show from the LROOE tour(or a mix of a few shows from the last 3 years).....is it too much to ask for them to release one as well as the documentary? is that being greedy, do you think?

It seems too late for that now. I would hope if they do a History Tour, then they would release a DVD of a show covering that.

Then, how about the commercial market DVD?

Well - for those who didn't listen to Glenn's interview that was posted today, he says they are about half finished with the DVD. Now, he's pushing the date out as far as early spring of next year. Well, like most things the band releases, I guess we'll see it when we see it. But, also like most things the band releases, I bet it'll be worth the wait.

Well Zelda - I sure don't wanna hurt ya or nothin' or be a Debby Downer, but just tryin' to be realistic in my expectations. After all, these guys don't exactly have a stellar track record when it comes to releasing material in a timely manner. Historically (or hysterically if you prefer), they aren't real good about meeting the timeslines that they first announce. Just sayin' ...
Of course, the sooner the better for me too. But being a long-time Eagles fan has made me become accustomed to delays. However, as I said earlier, I'm almost never disappointed when I finally get the finished product because the TLC that they put into it will shine through plain and clear. I just keep telling myself that patience breeds excellence.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know the inner workings of the band or what it takes, really, to put this DVD together. My personal guess is that this will somewhat depend on when Don's CD is actually finished and how much time he'll spend promoting it and touring for it. I imagine that for him right now, that CD has a higher priority.
From what Glenn has said in interviews, they aren't even getting together to discuss next year until this fall, and if touring gets pushed back to late spring or early summer, how motivated will they be to get a DVD out by Christmas? Even if it is finished, would the management team think it's a good idea to release it too far in advance of a tour...assuming there is one.
BramwenR
07-07-2012, 04:28 PM
Could be any number of reasons but I'm guessing there are a few loose ends to tie up first..the solo albums, their solo tours, family commitments..and then there's the notorious scheduling problems with production and all of that. What's that expression, s**t happens.
Think once they've got all the loose ends sown up, there's definite plans (or not) for a 2013 tour, that's probably what will round out the DVD.
Just sayin

If Glenn said otherwise, I will believe Glenn. I can't actually remember hearing him say this but I will take Dreamer's word for it.

Again, it's just speculation, but if they are getting "upfront" money and then a percentage of sales for the DVD then it would make more sense for them to release it this year as opposed to 2013 when they expect to tour again.

I'd bet that most of us would love to see a reunion of all seven band members during the reunion tour. But, if it were done, I would personally rather see all three of them instead of just one or two of them. Honestly, as much as I would love to see, I don't hold out a lot of hope for it. As we often say though, anything is possible with this band. Randy and Bernie could certainly come out of retirement for a show or one or two. To me, Randy's health may be one of the biggest problems.

I will say though that I got Mike a documentary called The Ballad of Mott the Hoople for his birthday & we started watching it last night. We watched the extras first & except for some 2009 reunion footage they were dreadful, including about 15 minutes of a New Musical Express hack raving about how Mott got their big break in his home town, Aylesbury, & then so did David Bowie. It was navel gazing of the worst sort & it was a waste of an extra when Ian Hunter barely featured.
These documentaries can be done well or they can be a waste of time & tell you nothing you didn't already know. We will have to wait & see.

It will be released when the band is ready to do so. I don't believe it will be this year.

Yes, FP, I'm sorry I stand corrected. They did mention that there will be some new interviews!!! That will be great....Looking forward to it.
I would love some stuff on LROOE too...I was pretty disappointed that they only played one song from that album in the show, but I hope they will be adding some more for the new Anniversary tour!
Are we 100% positive that it won't release until next year??? Has that been confirmed by anyone?

I wonder if they'll wait at all due the release of Zep's Celebration? Different types of DVDs, so maybe not.
I think there will be footage that's new to us. We've seen a lot of stuff, but I'd bet they have a lot things that no one has seen. Glenn made it sound like some of it was new to him. All I know is I can't wait to find out!!!

I think it's a fair bet it won't be released now til 2013.. given that we have not had an official release date issued.
In terms of new footage I'm sure they'll have some from the LROOE shows as it is a history of the Eagles so they'd certainly cover the time since F1.

I was so hoping we would get this this year. I'm afraid that we won't now since there has been no mention of a release date. It would have been a great Christmas gift if it could have been released by Thanksgiving.

I think they should have both audio and video of the "new" songs available. The audio versions could be put on a bonus CD or offered on their site as downloads that come with the purchase, so we can listen to the songs any time we want rather than only being able to see them as videos.

The band started the project a couple of years ago and had been talking about it for 10 years. They picked Academy Award winner Alex Gibney to direct the project and unearthed vintage footage including the band backing Linda Ronstadt.

Showtime on DirecTV is ten channels for $12.99/month. If I cancel within thirty days I may be subject to a $10 fee, so might as well have it for two months. But I'm thinking that with the shortened hockey season, Center Ice might be affordable, in which case I don't want to spend $12.99 on nine channels I'll never watch and one channel I'll watch once. What to do, what to do. The good news is that clicking the button to active the package is nearly instant, so I can wait until things are announced and I see the movie on the Channel Guide.

"Even die-hard Eagles fans will be astounded to see never-before-seen footage from the band’s last tour before breaking up for the first time, during the "Hotel California." Ellwood and Gibney found the footage locked away in a vault for 30 years, initially planned for release three decades ago but shelved when the band called it quits. Also featured is rare archival material and unseen home movies from the period."

I got chills reading that. I'm so freaking excited!!!
"Part one is from when the band began til its breakup" says Alison Ellwood, director of the high-profile documentary that will eventually be released as a two-disc DVD.
EVENTUALLY? I wonder how long we'll have to wait for both movies and then the dvd? Will they offer part one and then when part 2 comes out, we can but it or the 2 disc package?
"Nobody comes off as a villain," Ellwood notes. "The antagonisms that occurred -- all the members talk about it. It was this thing that imploded on itself.
Part two was initially created as a DVD extras package, with structure to it, Ellwood says, "but they gave such great interviews we created a second film. In some ways it's actually more moving than the first film. The emotional arc is when they grow up. You leave them at the height of their success in meltdown mode (in 'Part One') and in film two they grow and bring themselves back together. It has a nice arc."
Just love the fact they interviewed ALL of the members and say they were honest about everything.
And how about the footage they found? Wouldn't be cool to get that whole concert on dvd also? They say that it is excellent quality. How cool!!!

I'm a little nervous about the second one being put off because I'm afraid it won't materialize anytime soon... HOWEVER, better Part 1 than nothing and, as I've already said, I am chomping at the bit to see this. It sounds like even someone like me, who has about every bootleg in circulation, will see new stuff - and the stuff I have in better quality.
I've also decided that I will take down from the site any videos that also appear in full in the documentary, so the less overlap the better. ;)

I'm nervous about that too. And if it is to come out on dvd, wouldn't it make more sense to have both parts together in one box? That would mean we would have to wait till Part 2 is done before getting anything. I don't like that thought but.......

Another bit about the DVD, we've read most of it already in other articles. This one includes a quote from Ellwood, that the History of the Eagles, Part One covers “from when the band began ’til its breakup,” while the second flick “picks up with the solo careers and the band reuniting in 1994.” She adds that Walsh is featured prominently in Part Two, noting that his story is “almost the crux of the film.”
