Was he being sarcastic? For real?

We are better than anyone, ain't we? Except for the Eagles, the Eagles are better than us.

Didnt know about this quote until today. Not sure what the context was.

I don't know anything about this - either he's an Eagles fan or being sarcastic, but I don't know which.

Apparently it was said during a gig on their US tour... I'd hazard a guess that he was being sarcastic, or maybe just making a comment about the popularity of the Eagles in the States at that time; kind of taking a jibe at 'the biggest band around'. The Sex Pistols' US tour was 1978, so not too long after the release of Hotel California and the Eagles' rise to mega-stardom...

Given that he was an English punk rocker & they despised all 'establishment' bands like the Eagles, it would have been meant as the height of sarcasm and contempt. There is no way he would have been serious. He was a pretty sad individual. This is the band that once proclaimed something like 'no Beatles, no Rolling Stones in 1977'.

Well I like the way the quote stands by itself after all these years. ;-)

Agreed, most definitely sarcastic.

I thought that he may have been serious, but I'm probably wrong. Maybe Eagles was "guilty pleasure"?
When Queen and Sex Pistols were recoding their albums at the same time in the same bulding, SP visited Queen. Freddie called Sid Simon Ferocious. "Ah, Mr. Ferocious...":hilarious:

I don't think that remark was sarcastic...Maybe he was just resigned to the fact that the Eagles really were better than them!!!!!!:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious:

The guy was just a total weirdo...Who the heck knows what he was thinking when he said that....He was on drugs all the time

Given that it was almost a matter of honour for both musicians & the British music press at the time to sneer at what were called dinosaur rock bands, it amazes me that anyone could think that Vicious may have been serious.

I would THINK that he was being sarcastic but I will not say with certainty, like some here have, that it was definitely that and that I don't see how anyone could think he was serious. I don't have insight into what others think. This is another one of those things NO ONE knows for certain.

Personally, I hope he was being serious. Why not? I mean, do I seem like a Wayne Newton fan? :hilarious: It happens!!!!

I gave specific reasons for why I thought he could not have been serious which related to the culture of the time & the bitterness of Englilsh punk musicians & their hatred of 'the system' which included bands like the Eagles.

It's funny. I thought surely this topic had come up on some Sid Vicious forum so I did a search on it... only to find that this very thread came up on page 1 of results!

I guess it's not such an easy factoid to dig up, even in this day and age.

While we can't know for sure without doing some more digging, I'd lay odds that it wasn't serious.
