You are correct Dreamer I noticed that too awhile back. I'm sure the bass was pretty hefty to hold up.

That is quite the wide strap, I never noticed it either. Maybe because it is white against Randy's dark shirt. I've always assumed that the heft and length of the bass is why Timothy perches as he does on the stool with his right leg out, he just can't hold it across his lap like the others can hold their guitars.

I have a nice leather strap for mine (Elliott), don't think it's quite that wide...but my Peavey Fury is considerably lighter than that Fender...

That truck reminds me of my uncle's old racing truck. It was a '34 or '36 Ford truck painted sky blue and named Jackass. (That's my uncle's sense of humor)

Actually 2 different uncles there (both are my mom's older brothers). The one I'm close to is single and he's a pretty good cook. (I eat better at his house for sure! Lol). Both love cars and racing, but it's the other uncle(I'm not as close to him and he's taken) who used to race with his brother as the mechanic/helper. (My dad worked at the track that he raced at, so it's become a family thing)

I would love to see more of Randy's cars, if there are more photos. :)

That Fender Jazz looks like the one from the "Call It Love" video. Unfortunately the soft focus used during the band parts makes it hard to get a decent screen shot, especially with the jumpy shots of Randy. I agree about the nice shirt (his wardrobe choices were a bit hit or miss :shh:). Still the same sweet grin.

That white bass is actually a Fender Precision Bass.

The Music Man is very similar, as the guy who invented one invented that one (IIRC).

The way I tell is the Music Man bass has a circle pickguard.

During Randy's solo career, to break with the past, he not only sang in a lower key, he played guitar rather than bass. There are many shots of him playing a 12-string acoustic - curiously, the manufacturer name has been removed from the headstock, but the model resembles a Takamine.

TBH, I'm not sure if it was actually the HC tour per se; they started performing HC and Wasted Time before the album was actually released. I thought his hair looked similar to the style he had at the '76 Seattle concert (did they play HC there?). At the '76 Houston concert it looks like he's playing the Fender Jazz. He's definitely playing the Ric at the '77 Capital Center concert. I better stop posting before I confuse myself:confused:

NMB, I can't say with 100 percent certainty, but that headstock resembles a Martin to me. Glenn used a 6 and 12 String Martin before the hook up with Takamine. You can see the headstock in photos of him clearly. This one isn't clear, but it screams Martin to me.

Delilah, The bass on the left is a Jazz, and the one on the right is certainly a Ric.

I'm no bass player, but my bass of choice is the Jazz, over the Precision. Just a bit more smoother sound and a bit better blended into the background. It's more of a you feel it and sense it than it being loudly audible (at the same volume as a Precision). The Precision is punchy, and much higher output and a bit more of a forward sound. Also the necks are quite a bit different. The Precision (or "P") Bass has a big neck and a bit different width. The Jazz (or "J") Bass, has a thinner, smaller neck. I prefer thin necks on all guitars despite having big hands. I like to wrap my thumb around the top (like you are told not to, lol). The Jazz to me is better blended with a "big band", where as a trio could benefit from the Precision's beefy sound.

NMB, do you think it may be possible this is from his days with The Poor? His clothes look very similar to what he wore in that "Ironsides" clip and the guy on the left looks a lot like Allen Kemp (granted, it's only a partial shot). These timelines are confusing. I've read different sources saying Randy joined the Soul Survivors in 1963, 1964, and 1965. Didn't he drop out of school in 1964? I was trying to figure out what he was doing in 1963 when the top picture was taken, b/c it looks like a school picture. I believe he got married and became a father that year. Maybe another thread topic?

He married in May 1963, which I believe was his junior (and final) year of high school. He was 17. His first son was born in November '63.

Randy was in the Drivin' Dynamics from 1961-65, then the Soul Survivors which morphed into The Poor. They moved to California in early-ish 1966 I believe, near as I can figure out.

According to randymeisneronline.com on EOC, Randy joined the Soul Survivors in 1964 where they got a record deal with Loma Records (I thought it was Decca and The Drivin Dynamics signed with Loma). I think it was Felder's book that gave an earlier date. What you stated jibes with the article I posted yesterday in the DD thread. There's a lot of conflicting info. Maybe the EOC info should be updated.

I agree with ya there. In the first pic, he looks cold and almost miserable; maybe he had a long night too. In the second pic, he looks cold but trying to make the best of it. That's what struck me about these two pictures taken 20 years apart--both are outdoors in seemingly frigid temperatures. Not too fitting for a band from Southern California.

I have seen both of these pictures before and have always thought he looks older in the pic from 1968 then he should be at that time. And I never noticed the concho's on his pants in the 1989 pic until now.

Definitely older. It's a bit eerie - like a foreshadowing of their 1989 reunion. Because in other 1968-69 photos, Randy looks like his baby-faced self. A mere whelp.

Absolutely. I think everyone is entitled to a less than flattering photo now and then. In this case I blame the Poco photographer more than anything. Usually Randy's sweet and kind demeanor shines through.

Yeah, I've seen that. The other guys are kind of dressed up. It was "Farm" Aid, though; maybe that had something to do with it. I do wonder if a Seinfeld thing happened where a friend of Randy's designed the shirt and Randy agreed to wear it as a favor, cuz he's such a nice guy.:smile:

You were able to get a still from the "American Journal" story! I'm so technologically challenged I haven't even been able to save a copy.

The program shows a tantalizingly brief glimpse of Randy and band performing "Playin' in the Deep End" on I believe it was the Merv Griffin Show.

I also love the bits that were filmed in what I presume was Randy's backyard and home studio.
