The Eagles 02 Dublin 4 June 2014

Hi all, I've finally arrived home after numerous modes of transportation as I don't live near Dublin and I'm exhausted and suffering from PEW.

I won't go into all the technicalities of the show as I know you're all aware of the format and I preface my remarks by saying I am Don biased so I'm sure GA and Desperada will balance the equation at some stage. So again, I apologise for being one-sided in my comments.

Firstly, the show was fabulous, the sets, sounds and atmosphere amazing. When Don and Glenn came out I thought my chest would explode. Don immediately won the hearts of everyone when someone shouted (a woman I take it but not me surprisingly) 'I love you Don'. He answered in a not too bad attempt at an Irish accent, 'but darlin' I hardly know you'. The whole set just flew by with everyone joining in as they do in Ireland which Don later acknowledged as he said he needed some help tonight and pointed to his chest. Now I hadn't realised he had a sore throat or infection 'cos I thought he sounded brilliant.

I loved Bernie singing 'Train leaves here this morning' as it's one of my favourite songs. Surprisingly, and maybe it's just me but I thought Bernie actually looked small - maybe he just seemed bigger when he had all that hair :hilarious:

Anyway, I have to be honest but the heat in the auditorium was overwhelming and I was very concerned. You see I've just had the most awful few months of my life. My dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer in March and he and I have had our differences so I've been feeling very conflicted. A couple of weeks after the news I was driving into college when my body just went into shock and I collapsed. The paramedics arrived (much to my embarrassment I might add) and examined me and decided it was stress related, the usual answer when they're not sure and told me I must have had a panic attack. Now, I have had those a few years ago and this didn't seem the same to me at all and my doctor actually thought it was the after-effects of a migraine attack when I spoke to him subsequently. But anyway once they mentioned panic attacks I couldn't stop thinking of them and then of course I did start getting them - incessantly, so much so that I could hardly leave the house or drive and I'm already under pressure trying to finish my PhD. I have started seeing someone to talk it through which is helping Thank God but only for this board and the Eagles and Don I think I would have gone crazy these last few months...

...so when Don started singing 'every night I'm lying in bed holding you close in my dreams', I got so overwhelmed to think that was actually him the man I've adored forever - in reality and not just on a DVD or CD. I went through a very bad patch then and really thought I'd have to leave the show and after the interval it got worse so much so that I hardly heard Timothy B. but Glenn is a great showman and when he asked everyone to join in with Heartache tonight, I did and felt my tensions ease. So I was able to enjoy the rest of the night, and savour every Don moment and think about it and remember it 'cos I know times are going to be hard for us but last night will live long in my memory of good times.

They say you should never meet your idol in case they disappoint you - well I didn't actually meet Don but I heard him and saw him and he didn't disappoint. He was gracious, warm, endearing and supremely talented and though I couldn't take a photo of him from last night, here's a sketch I did of him in his 70s heyday.

And yes, in case any of you are in any doubt, I LOVE DON HENLEY :inlove:

Hydro was same for the heat. Be the british weather that guen him the cold.

DD, sorry to hear about your father. It's a tough one, but maybe you'll have a chance to improve your relationship with him. Don't be afraid to ask for help, time and support so that you can remain as well as possible through these stressful times.

Thanks for the review. It sounds like quite an occasion. I've a feeling Ireland is a bit special for them. (I can't imagine them getting excited about being in the "West Midlands" last week other than it was their first UK date! Sorry, Birmingham).

DD, I'm so terribly sorry about your father's diagnosis. It's only natural your health would be affected and I can say as someone who's gotten a PhD that I was more stressed out in that final year of completing the dissertation than I have ever been at any other time in my life. I can't imagine going through all that at one time! Your family is in my prayers.

The Eagles and in your case Don especially being able to help you through such difficult times is part of the reason why we love them so very much. The haters can bite me. THIS is why they are a great band.

Sounds like a fantastic show, aside from that awful heat!

DD ~ I'm so sorry to hear about your father and also your health issues. But isn't it amazing how the Eagles can make you forget about your problems for a little while? That happens for a lot of us whether it be at a concert, watching their dvds or just listening to their songs. I am so happy that you got to see them in concert. It sounds like the concert was just what you needed at this time.

And as Brooke said, you do not need to apologize for having Don as your favorite. He is a very special man!

I pretty much reiterate what everyone else has said here, DD. Sorry to hear about your father, but so glad for you that this awesome band was able to make you so happy for a little while. Hang in there.

Well firstly DD thank you for starting this thread and I hope things go well on your personal front over the summer. I am so glad you got to see your idol in person too. I didn't find the heat a problem (except for the heat emanating off the stage of course)

Now where to start........

We arrived at the O2 with about an hour to go before the doors opened and joined the queue. Then the girls (02 angels!) asked if anyone in our group was on the 02 network. Of all people, my 10 year old is! So they immediately brought us to the front of the queue! Bonus #1! We were one of the first into the arena. We met a German girl who is going all three nights. I was tempted to ask was her name Koala or EF!
Once in I looked for the VIP nation desk to get our laminates... Nobody knew where it was! Eventually found it to be told to come back later for the 'exclusive Eagles gift'. :eyeroll:. Ireland does not do VIP very well!

Anyway back to the family and I had won two passes to the O2 premium lounge, so myself and a work friend used them and had a very pleasant hour or so there. Great music and food, I think some of you saw our pic on my FB account.

Back about 15 mins before the show we found out seats. Now this was a GOOD surprise. I had thought we were in row 5 of the seated. We were, but row 5 was front row with only the standing people ahead of us. And there seemed no barrier between seated and standing. So I planned to stand on. Friday nights show regardless of my seated ticket.

We were however warned at the various entrances and at a public announcement before the show not to use cameras, video equipment phones etc, a directive that was rigidly enforced for the entire show sadly. My son wanted a pic of the stage before the show and even he was told to put the phone away.

The excitement was palpable as the lights went down and the guys came out. Ireland has been Eagle starved for the last 5 years, so this was a feast!
Of course I was just delighted to see Glenn :heart: again looking as good as always.
There's no point in regurgitating the set list because there were no changes from the standard list that we are used to, but I will point out a few moments from the first section of the show that I remember as being particularly special

Glenn :heart: shortly after the start of the show when he was welcoming everyone he commented that it was great to be playing indoors as he didn't have to keep watching the weather, or the sun (looking up cutely to the ceiling). I thought at that point he sounded ever so slightly hoarse but I'd he was it certainly didn't show in the rest of his singing or commentary. Possibly he just needed a drink!


I loved Already Gone - I was too busy taking pics in NYC to appreciate the background video in full, but oh My My! It is amazing!

Then when he introduced LE with his usual preamble about being in the Troubadour and seeing the girls with the guys who inspired the next song, that it was written fast because they did a lot of things fast in the seventies. Then he said 'this goes out to my first wife' paused and a few of us called out 'Plaintiff'. Then he laughed and said 'ah, you know her, and held the mic to the crowd so more of us hollered PLAINTIFF'. Then he laughed and introduced the song.

As usual before TITTL he said they would take a break 'men our age cant sing 31 songs without needing to use the bathroom', getting a laugh (and agreement) from everyone!! He then dedicated TITTL to Randy as he does.

Overall the first part was amazing as always, perfect singing, tight harmonies, amazing music. Everyone sang along to it really taking the roof off the place.

They took a break, and then totally unaware, I was in for quite a surprise......

Ok, so 13 year old girls also need to use the bathroom during concerts. I arrived back and my (long suffering) husband said to me 'come here, I want you to meet someone'. I'm thinking 'there's only one person here I want to meet and I don't think you have any power there'. I was right. BUT he brought me right up to the front of the standing section where a friend and colleague of his (Derek) was doing security for the 02! We chatted briefly and he said I could stay there. I was in row 1. Proper Row 1, a bit to the left on Timothy's side! Derek also said that while they had no contact with band members he'd see what he could 'get'. I stayed there for the rest of the show, and during ICTYW, Glenn :heart: was on the keyboard and I was only feet away from him. I was just so overwhelmed as to how I could go from anticipating a bad seat to being right at the stage. It was so perfect, just watching Glenn:heart: from there.
The second half was pretty much as standard but they all did seem in great form. Timothy mentioned that his wife is Irish and got a cheer. To which Glenn :heart: responded that HIS wife was 'part' irish and he got a laugh.
Joe had the audience rocking as always and had a head cam during LBG which he used to scan the front rows. Laura said she saw me on the screen. I dunno!
Poor Glenn:heart: when Joe sang 'they send me emails, tell me Glenn's great' Glenn :heart: went over towards him. Joe changed the lyrics to 'tell me Dons great' and pointed up at Don! Glenn :heart: looked a tiny bit put out but then recovered immediately. I wasn't really near enough to Glenn :heart: to interact with him at all but I didn't mind.
Oh, there was a kid in the front row (shouldn't have been. The age was 16 which was why I bought the seated tix in the first place!) but the lads made a great fuss of him. He gift picks from Timothy and Glenn :heart: and Don sent over his drumsticks.
Anyway, just as they left the stage Derek called me over and handed me a copy of........ THE SET LIST!!! A guy beside me was hollering at the stage crew to give him one of Joes picks. The guy pulled down the last of Joe's picks and also one that Glenn :heart: had left. He gave the guy the Joe pick, and ME the Glenn :heart: one!!!

So a set list and a pick. Can it get better tonight....... I doubt it. I left on a high and can't believe that in an hour I'll be doing it all over again!!!

Hi guys again and thanks for all your good will. I'm feeling a bit more composed this evening - very tired and emotional last night. I didn't want to pitch in again before GA told her story as we've been in contact and I knew the surprise!

Anyway, just a couple more things I've thought of since. I noticed the reference to Don from Joe and even though I'm biased (yes I am) I think it might be because the crowd really responded to Don and Joe sensed that. He got a huge cheer when Glenn introduced him, saying he was the best singer songwriter he knew and they've been friends for over forty years. Lovely.

Don really seemed to be in his element. He started off by saying how nice it was to be back 'in your lovely country' which went down well needless to say and then there was the funny moment with the Irish accent. I couldn't take my eyes off of him (of course) and noticed him smiling a lot to himself in sections and then spontaneously grinning when everyone joined in singing. He gave a lovely sweet smile during Peaceful Easy Feeling which was the first one everyone really got into because unless your a diehard fan like us some didn't know Saturday Night and Train Leaves Here This Morning (my favourite)

There was a family behind us, parents, teenagers who knew every word. I could hear them gasping at the intros, 'Doolin' Dalton' etc. We were chatting on the way out and the father let out a big sigh, saying he wished he could do it all over again. They spent over 400 euros but as he said you could buy something rubbish with that and not get as much enjoyment out of it. Unfortunately as an improverished student I can't afford any more shows as I have to add transportation and over-night accommodation to my bill. However, I heard that a couple I know from the road I live on outside a very small village in Limerick are going to tonight's show so that's cool.

There was a crappy review in today's Irish Independent which I won't even give a link to. The critic (or so-called expert!!!) must have been at a different show. He called it 'dull and soporific' I mean, come on and said 'there was good muscianship at times'. HELLO, WHAT PLANET IS HE LIVING ON? :eyebrow:

Just to finish up with Don again - he held the last 'love' of Desperado forever and the crowd went wild. It was a lovely but sad finish.

By the way my mother was with me and had a ball - and it wasn't just out of loyalty but she said Don stood out for her too.

Unfortunately, now it's back to reality :sigh:

Reading reviews from the shows is getting me ready for seeing them in London. I'm feeling very Eagles starved as I haven't seen them since Berlin & the Hop Festival in June 2011. I did see Don's solo show in October 2011, so that's when I last saw my darling Will.

The first show I saw on the HOTE tour was last summer and I was in the second row. when I saw Don Sing BOML so close to where I was, I had a moment and I almost cried, because I could not believe he was that close to me! On New Years Eve 2013 my husband and I were talking about the highlights of the year and I said my biggest highlight was when I saw Don Henley sing BOML- my husband said " I knew you were going to say that!"

Oh Zanny, that's it exactly! I play the Eagles over and over in my car and as I'm an artist I can visualise :hilarious: very well so you can imagine when the opening line of BOML comes on I have to turn up the cool air!!!!!

Just hearing Don sing that the other night was so emotional, I couldn't believe he was really there. They say Bill Clinton makes you feel like you're the only person in the room, well that's how it was for Don and me and as I've already gone into everything happening at the moment in my life, I really wanted to burst into tears when the realisation hit me.

But he did look fab, very fit, slight tint in his hair, white goatee and brown plaid shirt. I thought Timothy was quite frail looking and his voice wasn't strong on ICTYW but he defintely cranked it up for LWKUA.

Anyway, as for Don, once you fall for him there's just no going back...:love:

Hi everyone, DD sorry to hear about your Dad, I lost my mum last year to cancer, it's a tough time.

Glennsallnighter, I just realised you said you came to the front just to the left of Timothy Schmit, we were stood right at the barrier in front of him. It wasn't you who came up asking for a setlist was it? I remember a woman with dark hair asking for one from the security guy in front of me and he told her to come back at the end and he'd see what he could do.

Hi Everyone, Haven't been on the books for a while. But I wanted to tell EVERYONE how wonderful it was to see the Eagles 4 June 2014.
I missed them in 2009 due ill-health, so was I pleased as punch to see they were coming back to these shores. I had myself in a right state by the time I got from Belfast to Dublin, I just couldn't wait. Wooah!!!
I was so pleased that they enforced a no picture or standing in the way (that's unless of course you were in the standing area, of course) I was in the B block and it gets really frustrating when all that starts up. CHEERS TO THE EAGLES FOR THAT.
From the very start seeing them all walk on stage, including Bernie Leadon, it really made my night. I nearly passed out with the excitement, much to my mum's horror. There she thought that she had the monopoly on hysteria, HA!!
I was not disappointed, my years of waiting to see them. Wonderful music, harmonies, the craic from them to us the crowd. I hope this isn't the last we will see of them, but I have a sad feeling that it might, so I enjoyed the night, singing along and what a time that it just literally flew by. Saw Don Felder last night. He played mostly Eagles songs. After 12 HOTE concerts, I just compared to the real deal. Did not even come near to Don Henley. The guy next to me told me he saw the Eagles once. Get this it was the same guys in the Eagles but they called themselves by a different name. Can you say "beer" anyone. LOL

Sorry you didn't enjoy the Felder show as much, but it's hard for him to compete with the originals. That's one of the reasons I think he should play more solo stuff.

Thank you GA for offering to bring the pick to NYC. But I would hate for you to bring it and in all the NYC excitement and frantic pace something happen to it. It is probably best that it stay in Ireland all safe and sound! A photo of it is great!
I remember bringing something to Memphis to show Dreamer and Soda and I kept thinking I would leave it in the hotel room with all the activity, fun and excitement and late nights and early morning departure.

Oh, there was a kid in the front row (shouldn't have been. The age was 16 which was why I bought the seated tix in the first place!) but the lads made a great fuss of him. He gift picks from Timothy and Glenn :heart: and Don sent over his drumsticks.

During the interval, Scott Crago came over from behind stage left to meet my son, get his name so that Don could sign them for after the show. Timothy spotted him after the interval, and sent down his bass pick (straight from the great ones hand!). After the finale, Glenn spotted my son, so instead of walking off in turn, he went back and had a pick sent down. The signed sticks duly arrived. What a night for my kid, just 13y.o. and will carry those memories for the rest of his days!

Wow!! It's so great to hear that The Eagles are vey generous guys to their audience once again.

it's especially good to hear that even when people are going through some very rough stressful times in their lives music and especially Eagles music can bring our stress level down and for a moment give us some peace and enjoyment.

So great reading these posts and my prayers go out to DD and your family. Maybe when you are feeling very stressed or overwhelmed you can put on an Eagles CD close your eyes and imagine yourself back at the concert.

I just want to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and wishes before this thread closes. I'm usually not good at 'opening up' but I think the occasion of last week (can't believe it's a week already!) got to me. I was so emotional and overcome especially seeing Don 'live'.

Anyway, thanks to this Forum and you guys I'm trying to 'Get Over It' because I was like a lost '...sheep without a shepherd...'

Apologies for the bad puns but the Eagles' lyrics always somehow seem appropriate.

Forgot to mention, the 'Exclusive Eagles Gift' this time is an 8GB USB memory stick. Its in a presentation box and has Eagles along the sides. Very nice indeed and I must say as I do a lot of photography, its more useful than some of the other gifts have been. We now have 6 in the house.

And the big advantage is that if I lose it at work, well everybody will know who to return it to!!

Today is the anniversary of my one and only Eagles' concert. I can still remember how exciting it was to see and hear them live and especially realise that Don was really there in front of me....:dizzy:

I've had such a rotten year but that was definitely the highlight. Now, if only Mr H would put Ireland on his promotion tour and make this Irish girl's eyes smile :)
