September

Which would you like to here Glenn sing
Crying by Roy Orbison or Blue Eyes Crying in the rain-Willie Nelson

Freypower

I felt I should answer this. Crying is far too dramatic for Glenn (Here's To Life notwithstanding), although Don McLean's version is good. I had never heard Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain so I went to YouTube. The reality is neither song does much for me but Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain is far better suited to Glenn's voice.

New York Minute or You Belong To The City?

Freypower

Austin, The Disco Strangler is NOT a disco song. It is railing against the lifestyle led by people who listened to that type of music. That is the whole point of it. Just because it talks about disco doesn't make the song itself disco despite the minimalist nature of the music. Honestly I think it's the closest the Eagles got to punk.

Anyway... You Belong To The City, easily, even if it isn't about a specific place.

Freypower

A question meant for me. Glenn's.

---------------------------------

The HFO or F1 version of Take It Easy? (My own preference is for F1; I find the HFo performance somewhat stiff & disappointing. They should have let loose after playing all those slow ballads & they just didn't). Idon't wish to influence whoever answers this but I thought I would throw it in because it's not something we have ever really talked about.

thelastresort
09-06-2014, 09:14 PM
Farewell 1 version - something has always felt very distinctly uneasy and unnatural about most of HFO (I hate the stage set-up, and an orchestra: really?!). Whilst I'm not a fan of having no extended outro, I do love Glenn's enthusiasm introducing it, and IIRC he has a huge smile on his face as he plays the first chord.

Guitar Intros: (the mystery of) Hotel California or (the jangle of) Take It Easy?

Interesting when Henley did his Long Run intro in London, he mentioned the Bee Gees recording in Miami, someone laughed and he said 'Scoff all you want, but Mr Gibb wrote some of the best pop songs of the last half century'.

Anyway, Take It Easy, one of the best Eagles moments is when Glenn strums the first C (?) chord on that.

-----------

Doolin Dalton or Doolin Dalton Desperado Reprise?

shunlvswx
09-11-2014, 09:29 AM
I know The Bee Gees will always be known as a disco group, but a lot of my favorite are not even that era. I love their music from the 60s, the 80s, 90s and 2000s before Maurice died. I would had love to hear Barry and Don sing together. Now these are two guys who's singing verse is very different from their talking voice and can do those great falsetto notes.

Doolin' Dalton/Desperado reprise. Its just something about that song I love especially when they repeat Desperado at the end.
**************
Glenn's songs with "love" in the title: True Love or The One You Love.

Freypower
09-11-2014, 06:34 PM
I love the Bee Gees with a passion. The disco tag is grossly unfair & only refers to a brief period during the mid 70s (admittedly when they were selling a lot of records). A lot of people who only heard the music from this period never heard the rest of their huge body of work. However, I honestly think that Barry's voice would sound better with Glenn's. I refer to his 'natural' voice, not the overdone falsetto.

True Love or The One You Love is a difficult choice but I will go with True Love because the lyrics are more uplifting. There is something about the 'choice' the woman is being asked to make in TOYL which bothers me.

Step in that time machine and go back to 1971 and that bar in Colorado or 31st July 1980 and Long Beach?

shunlvswx

This is hard one. Knowing in 1980, I was only 5 months old about to turn 6 months when they broke up. Then 1971 they were getting themselves together to form The Eagles. This is hard.

I'm going to say July 31, 1980 in Long Beach. I always wanted to see concerts in the 70s. A lot of my favorite singers and groups are from the 70s and I always wanted to go back in time and see those concerts.

Somebody isn't 'about' Halloween (neither is Witchy Woman, for that matter). Some of the imagery may make people think of Halloween, such as the jack o'lantern moon & the crow in the graveyard. I don't celebrate Halloween but I can understand why the song reminds them of it.

Glenn's hair long or short

sodascouts
10-11-2014, 12:30 PM
Can I cheat a bit and answer short, but not super-short? I like Glenn's hair to be long enough to have body, have some waves. I don't like it when it's so short that it just looks spiky. On the other hand, that long 70s mane would look out of place on him. The only reason Tim can work it is because it's become part of his trademark style. Joe does a good job of puling off the longer hair, but with Glenn having abandoned it in 1979... well, you just can't go back after that.

Long answer, sorry!

======================

That brings me to Joe's hair.

Platinum blond or natural darker blond color?

shunlvswx
10-11-2014, 02:05 PM
I like the platinum blonde. It doesn't look too overdone or fake that you can see his roots. Whoever dyes his hair does a great job because it doesn't look overdone. I was watching HOTE and I think the platinum blonde looks better on his hair long then short.

Solo Performances on F1 Tour

Boys of Summer or You belong to the City

Ive always been a dreamer
10-27-2014, 09:13 PM
First of all, I agree about IDTWNW - it is a beautiful piece of music. You could always do what I do, tlr - whenever I play it, I always hit repeat and play it through a second time. And for the life of me, I can't figure out why they don't play it in concert.

Now, as far as GA's question, it is almost impossible for me to choose between these songs. If I was choosing the song, I'd probably give a slight edge to The Boys of Summer. However, in Farewell I, You Belong To the City's placement in the set was the transition point where the show started really rocking and the song was incredible live. Therefore, it gets a slight edge live.

======================================

Now, I do another instrumental choice: Wasted Time Reprise or I Dreamed There Was No War

Glennsallnighter
11-02-2014, 05:06 PM

I prefer Please Come Christmas, I like how 'ungimmicky' it is compared to a lot of Christmas songs - it's just the band playing and singing and it avoids the musical clichés like children's choirs or sleigh bells that work great on some festive tunes but often produce insipid results. Not a great fan of Funky New Year but I'm more of a Christmas guy anyway, never cared much for New Year.

01-18-2016, 02:13 PM
Although Glenn sings beautifully on After Hours, it's not my kind of music so I'm going with Analog Man, which I think is one of Joe's better solo efforts.

Hole in the World. And, it's a big one. :(

Heartache Tonight.

Hard as this is, we may as well continue with it. I hate to do this, but songs about 'running out of time' (we had an entire topic on this).

Part Of Me, Part Of You or I've Got Mine (the line is also used in Strange Weather).

I'm going to say I've Got Mine.

Tracks from After Hours: Here's to Life to After Hours.

Freypower

Here's To Life, which is my favourite track on the album, which I saw live, and which is now an epitaph of sorts.

----------------------------------

Glenn On The Border tracks: James Dean or Already Gone?

Jonny Come Lately
01-20-2016, 04:49 PM
Already Gone - it's my favourite song from the album. Do love James Dean too though, the On The Border era was a strong one for Glenn with those two plus Ol' 55 and GDIH.

Glenn's songs from LROOE: You Are Not Alone or It's Your World Now?

JCL, "Ol' 55"--that's the one that's been running through my mind all week.

I like them both, but I'm going with "It's Your World Now" this time.

River of Dreams. It's just so beautiful.

Somebody songs: I Found Somebody or Somebody?

Glenn and Cindy looked so cute in River of Dreams. Living Right will be memorable for Cindy since that's the first time she met Glenn.

I'm gonna go with Somebody. I love when he changes his voice in some parts of the song

Glenn Frey After Hours music videos: Route 66 or The Shadow of your Smile?

Freypower

The Shadow Of Your Smile is for me the best video he ever (not has ever...) made & will be even more poignant from now on. Thank God I got to see him sing it.

Cover versions: Ol '55 or Seven Bridges Road?

Seven Bridges Road. Such beautiful harmonizing in that song.

Train in the Distance. I've never been a fan of Train Leaves Her This Morning.

Don's I'm tired of hearing or seeing crap songs: No, Thank You or Get Over It.

Freypower
01-28-2016, 05:50 PM
I don't know No, Thank You well enough yet, although I like it. GOI is one my favourite Eagles songs so it has to be that. It should be noted that the lyrics were written by Don & Glenn, not just Don, although he sings it.

--------------------------------

Farewell songs: Best Of My Love or It's Your World Now?

Jonny Come Lately
01-28-2016, 06:47 PM
I prefer Best Of My Love as a song, although I feel that It's Your World Now is more of a true 'farewell' than BOML.

----------------------------

Bernie's Desperado songs: Twenty One or Bitter Creek?

NOLA

Bitter Creek. One of my favorite songs from the Desperado LP.

----------------

Songs about life: Life in the Fast Lane or Life's Been Good?

Life in the Fast Lane. It's one of the first Eagles songs that I can remember loving as a young kid.

Glenn solo love songs: The One You Love or True Love?

Jonny Come Lately
08-29-2016, 03:49 AM
I've decided to bump this thread, I thought it was about time to get this game going again. Hope no one minds!

I don't really know Glenn's solo works well enough to answer AG95's last question, although I would say The One You Love as I'm vaguely familiar with it whereas I don't really know True Love at all.

---------------------------------------------------------

LROOE singles: How Long or Busy Being Fabulous?

Annoying Twit
08-29-2016, 06:22 AM
How Long. As they said, it sounds like a classic Eagles song. Busy Being Fabulous is not among my favourite songs on the album.

ERAS
Country Era 1971-1976 or Rock Era 1977-2016?

UndertheWire
08-29-2016, 09:31 AM
I'd choose 1971-1976.

I disagree about it being "country" or "rock" though. I know Leadon is more "country" and Walsh more "rock", but I don't think there's such a big difference for the band as a whole and I would also say that "Witchy Woman" is more "rock" than "Pretty Maids All In a Row".

"Wasted Time" or "Desperado"?

travlnman2
08-29-2016, 10:03 AM
BOTH.

Which Album has the best opening track Hotel California or Eagles with Take It Easy?

Freypower
08-29-2016, 06:53 PM
My head says HC & my heart says TIE, but I will go with my head & say HC this once.

It is nice to see this revived.

Bernie's banjo work: Earlybird or Twenty-One?

Twenty One

=========

And since it's comin' on the end of August, best line in Waiting in the Weeds:

"A small grey spider spinning in the dark in spite of all the times the web is torn apart."

or

"The flavor of the week is melting down your pretty summer dress; Baby, what a mess you're making."

VillageGirl
08-29-2016, 08:15 PM
BOTH. Both sets of lyrics are so thoughtfully and beautifully written, I really can't choose.

Bernie's hair with the blond fro or bald Mr. Clean Bernie?

Annoying Twit
08-29-2016, 08:55 PM
Coming from a poster who wishes he had as much hair as he did in previous decades, definitely the blond 'fro.

Albums with 'Long' in the title: The Long Run or Long Road Out Of Eden?

travlnman2

They need to get Eden on Spotify so I can listen to it fully.
Long Run.

Afro Don or Long Hair 80s Don?

Long Hair Don. I never was a fan of his afro.

Songs from On The Border: Ol' 55 or Is It True

Jonny Come Lately
08-30-2016, 11:44 AM
Ol'55 - I love how Don and Glenn trade vocals and the great blend of piano and pedal steel, although I also like Is It True a lot.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Doolin-Dalton or the Doolin-Dalton/Desperado (Reprise)

Annoying Twit
08-30-2016, 01:09 PM
The reprise doesn't sound quite right to me. I prefer the individual songs than the reprise.

-------------------------------------------------------
A capella "No More Walks in the Wood" or instrumental "The Journey of the Sorcerer"

thelastresort
08-30-2016, 02:32 PM
I'll go for No More Walks in the Woods, despite the godawful 'and you for ill and I' line, which has always tainted it a bit for me. I appreciate it's not their work, but c'mon...

----------

Steel pedal work - My Man or Ol' 55? (I appreciate the latter wasn't performed by an Eagle.)

Annoying Twit
08-30-2016, 03:39 PM
Even without revising the songs, I'm going to go for the steel pedal work performed by an Eagle!

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Don Felder: With beard, or without?

shunlvswx
08-30-2016, 03:50 PM
Ok. I liked the beard on him in the 90s, but not the 70s for some reason. Maybe because I thought all the guys looked older with their facial hair compare to if they had it today. The HFO era was the guys hot era.

On that note. So I'm going to go with no beard.

Eagles Album Cover Art

One of These Nights or On The Border

thelastresort
08-30-2016, 04:51 PM
I think probably their two best covers. I love the Navajo artwork of On the Border (I have a t-shirt of it :D) but I think the OOTN skull is probably the closest the band has to a logo, so I'll say that.

-------------

Same question again:

Desperado or Hotel California artwork?

Jonny Come Lately
08-30-2016, 05:14 PM
If it's solely the front cover, then Hotel California, however if the whole artwork is taken into account then Desperado, because of the awesome back cover with the Eagles, Jackson and JD as the slain outlaws.

(NB. I don't usually like 'band photo' album covers, although Desperado is an exception because it illustrates the album's concept so well. I tend to only like thematic band photos, the more straightforward photos nearly always don't do it for as album covers)

---------------------------------------------------------------------

More album artwork: Eagles Live or Hell Freezes Over?

Freypower
08-30-2016, 06:00 PM
Eagles Live. HFO is extremely disappointing for something of this magnitude. It's cheap & uninteresting.

*TLR, I am so glad I'm not the only one who hates the 'and you for ill & I' line. It is atrociously bad. Following it with 'am only a passer by' makes it even worse when it's supposedly talking about two people.

-----------------------------

Business As Usual or Frail Grasp On The Big Picture?

Annoying Twit
08-30-2016, 06:04 PM
Frail Grasp. I really like that song.

------------------------------------------
Unpopular songs on TLR: The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks or The Disco Strangler

thelastresort

TGDWNF. The Disco Strangler is utterly bereft of anything positive whatsoever, other than the fact it ends.

----------

Joe vocals on LROOE: Guilty of the Crime or Last Good Time in Town?

Delilah
08-31-2016, 12:05 AM
Last Good Time in Town-- I find Joe's vocals in Guilty of the Crime a bit subdued and I like LGTIT much better as a song anyway.

Glenn's solo live shows: Japan '86 or Dublin '92?

WS82Classics
08-31-2016, 11:28 AM
Japan '86.

---------------------------------------------------------

Solo debut album artwork: Frey's "No Fun Aloud" or Henley's "I Can't Stand Still"?

Annoying Twit
08-31-2016, 11:46 AM
Neither are classics, really. And both of them had much better covers later on. I think they may have been reacting to fame, as some ex-Beatles did with low key album covers soon after band breakup.

I think No Fun Aloud shades it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Glenn Frey inspirations on songwriting: Bob Seger, Jackson Browne, or
JD Souther. Which do you think is the most important influence?

Freypower
08-31-2016, 05:39 PM
Is this really a this or that question? I guess people may disagree but I think Bob Seger had the biggest influence on him over a long period of time. It was Seger who showed him how to write songs & not to be afraid of bad efforts.

Witchy Woman: album arrangement or HOTE tour arrangement?
