Fleetwood Mac: Bob Welch-era or Buckingham/Nicks-era?

Annoying Twit
09-18-2016, 08:50 PM
Buckingham/Nicks era, though the Bob Welch era had some nice songs. (E.g. "Heroes Are Hard To Find".

-------------------------------------------------------
Ringo sung Beatles Songs: Yellow Submarine or With A Little Help From My Friends.

WS82Classics
09-18-2016, 09:10 PM
"With a Little Help from My Friends"--Sometimes gets more credit than it deserves, but still an old favourite.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rock group efforts at Classical music: Deep Purple's "Concerto for Group and Orchestra" or the Moody Blues' "Days of Future Passed"?

Freypower
09-19-2016, 07:13 PM
I haven't heard either but DOFP includes Nights In White Satin so it must be that.

---------------------------

More Moodies: Question or Isn't Life Strange?

WS82Classics
09-19-2016, 07:25 PM
"Question," which is one of my top 5 all time favourite songs.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Southern Rock anthems: Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" or the Outlaws' "Green Grass and High Tides"?

RudieCantFail
09-20-2016, 01:25 AM
I've never listened to either song until today, so I pick Green Grass and High Tides after listening to both. I think I like this one because it doesn't sound as southern to me. I don't have much of an opinion of southern music b/c I know next to nothing about it. I just liked how this song sounded like a regular rock song with an awesome guitar solo.

WS82, I like your choice of location. Gearing up for The Long Run survivor, huh?

Songs written by Lindsey Buckingham and Richard Dashut from Mirage:
Book of Love or Oh Diane?

Jonny Come Lately
09-22-2016, 04:20 PM
It's been ages since I've heard these two songs, although I can't remember being especially fond of either. I'll go for Oh Diane, as it's just a bit more memorable to my mind.

To me the Lindsey/Stevie version of FM could do virtually no wrong on the self-titled and Rumours albums. I'm not quite as keen on Tusk, even though it has some brilliant material, because I think Lindsey went down a few musical and production dead-ends. The problem with Mirage was I think they went too far in the other direction and didn't have enough good songs to make up for this. They got the balance of songs and production just right in the mid-1970s IMO (although I have always been a Rumours guy).

-------------------------------------------------

More Fleetwood Mac: Stevie's songs from Tusk or Christine's songs from the same album?

Annoying Twit
09-23-2016, 03:54 AM
Both good, but I really like 'Think About Me' so that tips it in Christine's favour.

---------------------------------------------------------
Instrumentals: The Beatles' Flying or Jean-Michel Jarre's Oxygene Pt. IV?

WS82Classics

"Flying"--The Beatles

And Rudie, yes, I suppose you could say that. :-)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"I'm a Man": Yardbirds rendition or Spencer Davis Group rendition?

AlreadyGone95
09-25-2016, 10:40 AM
Spencer Davis Group

------------
Christine McVie 80s songs: Hold Me or Everywhere?

Annoying Twit
09-25-2016, 04:26 PM
Hold me. I think it's slightly catchier and I like the democratic (it sounds) backing vocals.

---------------------------------------------------------
Colourful novelty songs: Itsy-Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini or The Purple People Eater?

Delilah
09-25-2016, 07:05 PM
"Polka Dot Bikini" - it reminds me of those whimsical Frankie Avalon/Annette Funicello beach movies.

Forbidden dance movie soundtracks: Footloose or Dirty Dancing?

AlreadyGone95
10-01-2016, 12:20 AM
I'll go with Footloose just because I like the the title song.
----------

"Ride" songs: Free Ride by Edgar Winter or Let It Ride by Bachman Turner Overdrive?

Annoying Twit
10-01-2016, 02:19 AM
Those are both great songs. BTO is a band that I have/had the greatest hits of, but never ventured further into their catalogue.

It took some thought, but I think that Free Ride just shades it, with its more interesting guitary arrangements. But, both are great songs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prog rock bands in proggy periods. Early/mid 70s Yes or early/mid 70s Genesis?

Jonny Come Lately
10-01-2016, 02:18 PM
Early/mid 70s Genesis, who for me reached their absolute zenith around Selling England By The Pound, although I'm more familiar with Peter Gabriel and co than I am with Yes of the same era.

----------------------------------------------

1990s live albums by legendary bands: The Dance by Fleetwood Mac or P.U.L.S.E by Pink Floyd?

AlreadyGone95
10-02-2016, 01:56 AM
The Dance

-----------

"Weekend" songs: Saturday's Alright for Fighting by Elton John or Sunday Bloody Sunday by U2?

Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2

---------------------------------------
Western film theme songs: The Magnificent Seven Theme - Elmer Bernstein or Il Buono, Il Cattivo, Il Brutto (The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly) Main Title - Ennio Morricone?

Sorry for the long title, but I copied it from its Spotify listing. It's the song that plays in the title sequence at the beginning of the latter.

Freypower
10-03-2016, 05:55 PM
Both are superb pieces of music but GBU is more avant garde & is my choice.

------------------------------

Lindsey Buckingham: Go Your Own Way or I'm So Afraid?

"Go Your Own Way"

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Solo Beatles 'comparison' albums: John Lennon's "Walls and Bridges" or Paul McCartney's "Venus and Mars"?

Annoying Twit
10-03-2016, 11:53 PM
Closer than many would say. Lyrically Walls and Bridges, Musically Venus and Mars. I think V&M just shades it as it's more of a band album. I like the vocals from Denny Laine (Spirits of Ancient Egypt) and Jimmy McCullough (Medicine Jar) and that V&M includes more musical variety, from rockers (E.g. Letting Go) to novelty songs (You Gave Me The Answer.)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
CS&N - Marrakesh Express or Teach Your Children?

WS82Classics
10-05-2016, 08:49 AM
Both are great songs, but "Marrakech Express" for songwriting originality.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Play the Game": Kansas' rendition or Queen's rendition?

WalshFan88
03-24-2017, 02:31 AM
Kansas

----------

"Little Wing" - Jimi Hendrix or Derek And The Dominoes version?

RudieCantFail
10-09-2017, 02:01 AM
Derek and the Dominoes because I liked the vocals better.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Everywhere" by Fleetwood Mac or "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" by Talking Heads?

Annoying Twit
10-10-2017, 02:59 AM
This Must Be The Place

Everywhere is a nice song, but not a CMcVie standout. This Must Be The Place is a more interesting song.

-----------------------------------------------
Saxophone or trumpet? (In general)

Freypower
10-10-2017, 05:28 PM
Sax is more rock'n'roll. I associate trumpet with jazz (it must be said that I was listening to All Blues by Miles Davis recently; he was a master of that instrument).

Ringo solo: No No Song or You're Sixteen?

Annoying Twit
10-11-2017, 02:22 AM
No No Song - It's a pity that Ringo didn't give all that up until later.

---------------------------------------------
Bands with very few 'classic' members left. Jeff Lynne's ELO, or The Beach Boys

RudieCantFail
11-24-2017, 04:31 AM
Geez, that's tough. I'd have to say the Beach Boys for Brian Wilson's production techniques and style, but I do like a few ELO songs that I've heard before. I haven't looked deeply into the catalogs of either. There's definitely more intrigue and drama with the Beach Boys, since they've dealt with Charles Manson via Dennis Wilson and production troubles with SMILE. Yeah, I'm sorry that this isn't the most music-based answer.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Say You Will - Fleetwood Mac or Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie?

Annoying Twit
11-24-2017, 04:33 AM
I'm a real fan of Say You Will. I like Buckingham McVie, but not to the same level as Say You Will.

------------------------------------------------------------

Noel or Liam Gallagher?

tac0mao6
11-25-2017, 01:24 AM
ah .. the dueling potato brothers. not sure there is a winner here, but i’ll go with noel for the “fork in a world of soup” line about liam

Will you still love me tomorrow cover: Dave Mason or Linda Ronstadt?

johnnycomelately89
11-27-2017, 10:48 PM
Have to go with Linda on this one. This version is one that makes me believe the singer may be feeling what their singing about. Is she really worried she might lose someone while she stands in the studio during that take? Great voice, great song. :singer:

Pick a legendary performance to dance your tookus off at; Hendrix at Woodstock or queen at live aid?

Freypower
12-04-2017, 04:39 PM
Very hard. I saw Queen (& will be seeing them next year with AL...) so I have to choose them, but Hendrix was a genius.

I'm building up to next week so...

Without You .. Badfinger or Harry Nilsson?

Without You--Harry Nilsson, great performance!

"That'll Be The Day" performed by Buddy Holly, or Linda Ronstadt's cover version?

Freypower
01-05-2018, 06:21 PM
I don't like the song much, but I have to go with the original. Ronstadt did all these cover versions of famous songs, and she never improved on any of them, except perhaps Long,Long Time (NB: My opinion only).

one hit wonders (defined as act with 1 top 40 single):
Seasons in the sun (Terry Jacks) or Me and Bobby McGee (Janis Joplin)?

Freypower
01-25-2018, 06:34 PM
Joplin may have had only one Top 40 hit but she was extremely influential, so Me & Bobby McGee it is as opposed to the sentimental slush which is Seasons In The Sun.

Elvis songs from 1960 (the year I was born): Stuck On You or It's Now Or Never?

Out of Control
02-04-2018, 06:29 PM
Being a big Elvis fan, I love them both but It's Now Or Never.

Roy Orbison's first big ballad hits: Only the Lonely or Running Scared?

tac0mao6

24K Magic, hands down!

Phil Collins soundtrack songs: Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) or Groovy Kind of Love?

Freypower
02-12-2018, 05:41 PM
As a huge Genesis/Collins fan, while Groovy Kind Of Love is a cover, it is far superior to the highly overrated Against All Odds, which in my view shows Collins at his overbearing, melodramatic worst. I do like the song but the point is I know that Collins is capable of far, far, better.

REM: Losing My Religion or Everybody Hurts?

LuvTim
02-13-2018, 12:17 AM
I like both of these songs, and it's mainly a matter of mood; however, having said that, it's Losing My Religion that most reliably causes me to turn it up and sing along!

Cheap Trick Hits: I Want You To Want Me or Surrender?

RudieCantFail

Surrender, but I do like the other song as well. This one just edges it out.

----------------------------------

In general (You don't have to spend a whole lot of time on this. Top 5 songs on the artist's page on Spotify would suffice),

Punk/New Wave band that had album debuts in 1977 and went funky and worldly somewhere:

Talking Heads or The Clash?

Freypower
02-20-2018, 05:42 PM
I was not a big fan of either band. The Clash have more songs which mean something to me so I choose them.

------------------------------

Led Zeppelin epics: Achilles Last Stand or Carouselambra?

Freypower
03-12-2018, 07:03 PM
Not much love for Led Zep here at the moment. Both are good songs but Achilles is more iconic.

--------------------------------

Beach Boys: I Get Around or California Girls?

Annoying Twit
03-13-2018, 08:53 AM
Both of them are great tunes with great performances but with lyrics that perhaps have not aged well.

I'll go for I Get Around.
