This is a very interesting article from the LA Times. Among other things, it mentions that the guys will be featured on 60 Minutes in an upcoming interview from the Troubadour.

I like the qualifier at the end of the interview.
"There won't be another Eagles album after this. That's what I think today."

The Eagles' last flight?
The Eagles
Lawrence K. Ho / Los Angeles Times
The Eagles performing last month at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.
The new album is a hit at Wal-Mart, but the band may be nearing the end of the road.
By Geoff Boucher, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
November 6, 2007
THE long run of the Eagles began with a sad, funny little gig at the Westlake School for Girls and nights spent in the dingy confines of the Troubadour, where their crystalline harmony -- at least on stage -- would define the world-famous "Southern California sound."
Now, in fact, it's hard to think of Los Angeles without thinking of the music of the Eagles and it's impossible to consider the band without L.A. as a frame.
The L.A. story of the Eagles is on the first page of the final chapter. The band has a new album in stores for the first time in 28 years and the members seem to know their own swan song when they hear it.
"It was painful birth," lead guitarist Joe Walsh said of the struggle to finish "Long Road Out of Eden," which ended up as a double album. "I can't think we have another one in us. I really can't."
When the new edition of the Billboard 200 chart is released Wednesday, it will show that the No. 1 album in America is "Blackout" from Britney Spears. But in reality, the bestselling album in the country over the last week was in fact "Eden" -- because it was sold exclusively through Wal-Mart stores and the veteran band's website, "Eden" is ineligible for the Billboard tally.
The first Eagles album since the Carter administration has a first-week total that looks to be about 700,000 copies, according to the band's manager, Irving Azoff. That doubles the sales of the new Spears album and makes "Eden" one of the fastest-selling CDs of the year even though it was not released by anything resembling a traditional record label.
"I'm not even sure what the recording industry is anymore," said Don Henley, who with Glenn Frey is the most familiar voice in the Eagles. To add to the sense of strangeness, the iconic band finds its new music is getting its most significant radio airplay at country stations. Embracing that, the Eagles will perform Wednesday on the Country Music Assn. Awards on ABC, which, shockingly, will mark the first time the band has ever appeared on an awards broadcast.
In other words, if you think you are bewildered by the carnival fun house that is the music industry of 2007, try being a member of the Eagles.
"I couldn't tell you what a hit record is these days," said Frey with a shrug. He and Henley are the only founding members left from the days when the Eagles got their start as a backing band for Linda Ronstadt.
They went on to claim the bestselling album in the history of American music, "Their Greatest Hits, 1971-1975," which is creeping toward 30 million copies shipped to stores, according to the Recording Industry Assn. of America. But that titan status in the boom of the 1970s has given them a collective impatience with the wilting industry around them now. "I feel like I was part of Camelot," Frey said, "and it's not coming back."
"Eden" is an epic album (many critics, in fact, are saying it's too long, although the reviews have also been largely positive) and all four members -- Henley, Frey, Walsh and bassist Timothy B. Schmit -- get a turn in the spotlight. It's almost like they are taking their bows. The 20th and final song on "Eden" is a farewell tune, "Your World Now."
"It's a sort of a passing of the torch song, it's an adios song," Henley said. "It works on that level for our children and also on the band level."
Back to the nest
A few weeks ago, the Eagles were back at the Troubadour to sit down for an interview with "60 Minutes." Frey found the experience heartwarming -- and somewhat claustrophobic.
"It was like walking up to a house you used to live in and knocking on the door -- 'Do you mind if I came in and looked around?' " Frey said. "The place seemed so big to me once and they are really so small. I don't know what made the Troubadour feel like a giant place. Maybe it's because for us it was an open road."
Frey had come west from Detroit and was living in a shabby Echo Park apartment upstairs from a young songwriter named Jackson Browne. Frey would hitchhike to West Hollywood to soak in the pulsing scene at the Troubadour even though he was so broke he sometimes nursed one beer all night.
Another young singer in the scene was Henley, fresh from Texas, which he ditched after hearing "California Dreamin' " on the radio. Henley and Frey became roommates and part of Ronstadt's band, along with Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner. The four then went their own way, called themselves the Eagles and signed to a start-up label called Elektra Records. The label was run by a young manager named David Geffen.
They didn't have to wait long for fame. Their first album, "Eagles," yielded three hit singles: "Take It Easy," "Witchy Woman," and "Peaceful Easy Feeling."
"We came up," Henley said, "at a 45 degree angle." Their second album was the 1973 Old West concept album "Desperado." "We didn't have any hits on the second album," Henley said. "We made sure of that. We were afraid of commercialism. It was a bad thing." The years would disabuse the band of that notion.
The next three albums -- "On the Border," "One of These Nights" and "Hotel California" -- moved away from country twang and toward a dusty, Western sort of rock with more guitar sinew. A lot of that was due to the addition of guitarist Don Felder in 1974, and then Walsh in 1976. These changes were not made gently. Leadon, frustrated with the rock direction, announced his resignation by pouring a beer over Frey's head. Bass player Meisner, sick of the chaos, left in 1977. The Eagles recruited Schmit, who was stunned by the backstage strife.
"I thought at first it was just the normal tensions, you know, but these were really intense," Schmit said. "And then came that night in Long Beach."
The "Long Night in Wrong Beach," July 31, 1980, found the Eagles muttering dark threats to each other between the choruses. After the show, there was a brawl backstage. Schmit watched it all in shock. "I remember after weeks it sank in: This really was the end of it all."
Frey scoffed when asked if it was meaningful that what came together in Southern California also splintered here.
"Bands have arguments in Memphis, sometimes they have arguments in New York," he said testily. "Look, we disagreed all over the world."
Together again and again
The band members went their separate ways after their California divorce, but they came back together for the kids. The fan appetite and the big money it represented led to a 1994 reunion with a delicious name: the Hell Freezes Over Tour. The group was Henley, Frey, Walsh, Felder and Schmit and they broke records. A concert album (along with a few new studio tracks) sold 8.5 million copies and in 1998 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
The band circled the world twice on tour but there wasn't a lot of warmth backstage. The five members played together for the last time at Staples Center on New Year's Eve 1999.
A few weeks later, the band fired Felder and lawsuits followed. Felder claimed Henley and Frey wanted to hoard the band's money. The two founding members countered that band chemistry would improve without Felder. (There was a settlement but legal subplots remain; also, Hyperion Books in September cited "legal reasons" for the cancellation of Felder's tell-all memoir about the band's debauchery and bickering.)
The Felder affair reinforced the nagging image of the band's as a sour, mercenary collective. One way to measure the ubiquity of the Eagles is to gauge the bile they inspire. Punk rock was, to many observers, a direct response to the Eagles, and hating the Eagles even made it to theaters as a recurring gag in "The Big Lebowski." The new deal with Wal-Mart brought hectoring. Henley said the impetus for the deal was the environmental initiatives by the world's largest private employer but Frey said it was simple math: "If this is our last album, I wanted to sell as many copies as possible."
The band members stopped listening to the detractors years ago, but even they said they were ready to retire the franchise at the start of this decade.
"The old songs are part of the cultural lexicon and they have been good to us, but at some point singing them over and over just isn't any fun," Henley said.
In summer of 2001, the band was in Europe on tour when a funny thing happened. With Felder out of the picture, the band found that it was acting like, well, a band again.
"We didn't just play, we started hanging out again," Frey said. "It was a pleasure to go to sound check. There was a lot of fun and lot of laughs on the charter flights from country to country."
Steuart Smith, Felder's replacement, became "a catalyst, a source of rejuvenation for us," as Henley put it. The band decided to go into the studio and chose a fateful date: Sept. 11, 2001. World events seeped through the studio walls. One of the first pieces of music they worked on was an extended jam that coiled with ominous power.
"I remember thinking we're never going to write the lyrics to this thing, it's just too long and too scary," Frey said. But Henley, who had written the epic Eagles song "The Last Resort," responded with another "magnum opus," as Frey called it.
That forlorn rumination on the Middle East and geopolitics became the title track of the new album, even though much of the CD is relationship songs and honeyed harmonies. In fact, the album covers just about every Eagles musical territory and creative surges kept adding to it.
"We were done with the album a few times," Walsh said, "but it wasn't done with us." Maybe so, but the famously dour Henley frets that the album should have been leaner. "I think there are only a couple of superfluous things on there." He declined to elaborate. "That would break the band up. Again."
The most likely thing to break up the Eagles is time, distance (Henley lives in Dallas, the others in different parts of California) and the tug of family. The band just opened the Nokia Theatre with a run of shows but on opening night Henley was backstage talking about his family.
"I talked to my kids a little while ago; I had to remind them I had a concert tonight," Henley said with a chuckle.
Last summer he was the first Eagle to turn 60, and he celebrated by surfing in Malibu with his 9-year-old son and pal Jimmy Buffett. Smiling, Henley seemed just as interested in being a beach boy as in carrying on as an Eagle.
"This is the final statement. We got back together and went around the world twice on tour but then there was nothing left to do without new music. Now we have this album that fits in with our body of work. There won't be another Eagles album after this. That's what I think today."

Thank you so much! How interesting.
Some highlights (in bold) and my comments (regular text):
A few weeks ago, the Eagles were back at the Troubadour to sit down for an interview with "60 Minutes." Frey found the experience heartwarming -- and somewhat claustrophobic.
"It was like walking up to a house you used to live in and knocking on the door -- 'Do you mind if I came in and looked around?' " Frey said. "The place seemed so big to me once and they are really so small. I don't know what made the Troubadour feel like a giant place. Maybe it's because for us it was an open road."
When I visited the Troubadour in May with mewsical from Rockphiles (http://www.rockphiles.com), I was astonished at how small it was. The bar area was barely able to fit one row of tables and a passage for people to walk! I wanted to take a photo of the inside, but the lady there wasn't too comfortable with that. We were lucky she even let us in, as it was midday and the place was closed.
Maybe so, but the famously dour Henley frets that the album should have been leaner. "I think there are only a couple of superfluous things on there." He declined to elaborate. "That would break the band up. Again."
Perhaps Glenn has heard about Don's recent comments and told him to put a lid on it, lol.
Last summer he was the first Eagle to turn 60, and he celebrated by surfing in Malibu with his 9-year-old son and pal Jimmy Buffett. Smiling, Henley seemed just as interested in being a beach boy as in carrying on as an Eagle.
Aw, what a visual! How cute. I think the phone call to his kid is sweet, too. Don Henley in the daddy role!

I love the visual of Don in the Daddy role. It is so sweet.
Don had his son with him the first time I ever saw him, in Atlanta at Chastain Park in 2004. I didn't know much about him, since I was just a casual fan at that time, and at that concert he started talking about Will and how they had just gotten back from Disney World. My family had gone to Disney World too, the month before, and I thought, Wouldn't it have been funny if Don Henley and I had been in Disney World at the same time? That was before all THIS started up for for me, and now, as the man himself says, "Everything is different now." 8)

Luckily there was another channel here in Ontario with the 60 Minutes show on so I've seen it. It was FANTASTIC!!
The Eagles part comes on just past the halfway point of the show and they are on for about 15 minutes. All the guys get to talk and they only seem to have one or two shots from the Trobadour.
A funny little thing.... The interviewer asks Don about the bands past expierences with the law.... and Don mumbles around for a bit but finally comes out with "well Glenn and I both had our run ins with the law, back in the day"

Just saw it. I think the interview was OK, but not as good as I'd hoped. The fact that the Dan Tana's segment was about 30 seconds didn't help much (and no Troubadour segment). I think that 60 minutes could have had more interview and less old concert clips in the alloted 15 minute segment, but overall it was pretty good. For instance, it was cool to have them give a joint interview with all four of them, and an interview with just Glenn and Don (although they didn't use much of that). The guys look better on the TV than they did on the computer clip, IMHO.

I thought it was pretty good, but they didn't even mention the Troubador. I didn't know when they were there!
I liked the question about everybody wanting to know what HC was about. Don laughed and said "I know, it's so boring!" And Don went on and on about it being Glenn's band, he got it together, Glenn found the first hit song and Glenn sang it, etc. I also loved the BBC part with Glenn singing PEF in the green shirt! And Glenn singing the guitar riff of LITFL was so cute!

They did look good but I was disappointed as well. I realize they had to show some old clips, but they really should've shown more of the current interview. There was great historical significance to segment taped at the Troubador, and they didn't even identify where they were. And they even cut part of the quotes they showed as the preview on the CBS site--Don said something about the cheers of 50,000 fans being addictive, and all they showed was him saying "it's addictive."
Since the segment opened by saying that "all the Eagles have never sat down together for an interview before," I really feel like they missed the boat here. The whole interview could've been SO much better.

I agree that it could have been better. I was kind of suprised again to see just how good Joe looks! And it was so nice to see him smile......and not just a little smile......a SMIIIILE! lol I don't even remember what he said....just the smile! lol
LOVED the part where Glenn was talking about how LITFL came about. It was really cute!
I thought it was interesting that Tim popped in with the "why don't you like my song" comment. lol
All in all, the guys looked really good and it was neat to see them all together and in the "circle of fear." But I was really disappointed in how short it was and how many video clips they showed instead of talking to ALL the guys a little more in depth. I also couldn't help but feel they were trying to make something out of nothing with the Don/Glenn "body language" comment. They looked like they always do together.

I agree they could have done with less old clips, but I guess it's helpful to journey back thru the band's history for people who aren't hardcores like us. Hey - I'll take whatever I can get. I thought all of the guys looked fantastic and all seemed to be in good spirits. Very upbeat overall. :yay:

I thought folks who can't see it might like some highlights:
[They sing "No More Walks in the Wood" in a circle. Interviewer gives intro]
Don: There's a certain sound that we make when we sing together, that over the past 35 years, has become ingrained in people's minds. I can't sound like that with anybody else except these guys.
[Interview gives some history while old clip of 1973 PEF plays, then F1 clips]
Steve Kroft: Why do you think the Eagles are still so popular?
Glenn lists like a dozen of their hits as the answer.
[clip of them rehearsing Heartache Tonight]
SK: It was important for you guys to come up with new material and not just go out and play the old songs.
Glenn: Well, we weren't gonna. We were gonna be done. We've been the guardians of the Eagles legacy for a long time now. And I wouldn't wanna have it end where you're just sort of doing a caricature of yourself, a tribute to yourself. We either had to fold our tent or make a record. And fortunately - I'm so glad we did - we decided to make a record.
[clip of How Long video, interviewer gives some more set up. Shows them rehearsing How Long in the "circle of fear."]
SK: Why do you call it the Circle of Fear?
Glenn: There's nowhere to hide. You like to kinda come out here and see that everybody's got it, and we're all singing the right things.
Tim: And to do that, it's repetition. You just have to do it over and over.
Joe: Just 'cause you wrote 'em don't mean you can play 'em.
[Everybody laughs. More voiceover about everyone contributing.]
Joe: We've been through probably every trip that a band could go through. And what is left now is working at our craft.
[Clip of In The City video; voiceover gives some history about their past excess and Joe's riff from LITFL.]
Glenn: We were just setting up to rehearse and we hear this... ["sings" guitar intro for LITFL, clip of it live plays]. We go, "Hey, that's a song. Save that! Save that, man!" And then we actually started jamming on it.
[Voiceover talks about how HC was hard to top]
SK: Hotel California.
Don: Yep.
SK: Everybody wants to know what the song means.
Don: [makes face] I know. It's so boring. [clip of HC video from '77 plays.] It's basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream, and about excess in America - which is something we knew a lot about.
[HC live clip plays; more voiceover about excess]
Glenn: We weren't the Stones but we weren't the Osmonds, either. Somewhere in between.
SK: Closer to the Stones.
Glenn: Closer to the Stones than the Osmonds, that's right.
[switch to separate Don Interview]
SK: Did you ever get into any trouble?
Don: Yeah, we've all been in trouble. Everybody in this group has been in trouble.
SK: Like, need the lawyer kind of trouble.
Don: Yeah. Oh yeah.
SK: Had your picture taken at the police department.
Don: Yeah, Glenn and I both. Yeah, we did some stupid things. I did some incredibly dumb things... you know.... but managed to get through it.
[Voiceover talks about The Long Run and the breakup.]
Don: I mean, it was turmoil in this group from day one. There were disagreements and dramas... and once we started to have some success we were all freaked out about losing it.
[switch to separate Glenn interview]
Glenn: All we felt was the pressure to do better than Hotel California, and it ate us up. And then throw in the fact that we were able to afford and do any drugs we wanted... that sort of brought out the worst in everybody.
[voiceover talks about breaking up and having solo careers, then reuniting. Clip of TIE from HFO played - SK says it made a quarter of a BILLION dollars]
[switch to interview with all four of them]
Glenn: We've never been what I would call conflict-free.
Don: It's the typical, quintessential normal stuff that every band on earth goes through.
Tim: Power struggles.
Don: How many songs am I gonna have on the album, what do I get to sing, are you gonna co-write with me, are you not gonna co-write with me...
Tim: Why don't you like this song...
Don: Yeah, why don't you like my song.
[switch to separate Don interview]
Don: It's a myth to think a band can be a complete democracy. Glenn started the band, and he's the one that had the vision; he's the one who named the band; he's the one who found the first hit single and sang it. It's basically his band.
SK: Has that always been a source of tension between the two of you?
Don: That has been a source of tension. It can be. Again, that's one of those things that ebbs and flows. I mean, I don't always agree with the decisions he makes, and he doesn't always agree with what I want to do. So again, it's always a compromise. As long as you're willing to compromise, that's fine. But there are days when you just get tired of compromising.
[Switch to segment at Dan Tana's with Glenn and Don at a booth across from SK. His voiceover: "Even today, the body language during the rare joint interview speaks volumes, prompting us to ask the obvious."]
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b141/glennfreyonline/bodylanguage.jpg
SK: Are you guys friends?
Don and Glenn both: Yes, yes.
SK: A complicated friendship, though, I take it.
Don: It's a little bit like brothers.
Glenn: And we're in business together. We're in the business of songwriting. We will forever be associated. We might as well get along, 'cause there's no getting away from each other.
[Voiceover talks about them choosing to go with Walmart to sell the album, which had agreed to buy 3,000,000 copies from the band.]
[Cut to group interview]
SK: Everybody thinks that the reason you're doing this is for the money. You're going back out, you're touring, you've got a new album... must need some more money.
Don: Well, I won't say that that's not part of it. There's something much greater than money about this, and that's the sense of satisfaction. There is no greater, more satisfying thing for me than hearing a song that I've written or co-written coming to fruition in the recording studio.
[clip of them rehearsing How Long.]
Don: It's addictive! And you wanna keep doing it.
[clip of them playing How Long live; switch to separate Don interview]
Don: I think a great many of the songs on it will stand up with the best work we've ever done. So it took 28 years. So what? That's my answer to that. So what? I'd much rather make what I consider to be a really good album every 28 years than to make a mediocre album every year. I'm proud of the album and I'm glad we did it, and if we never make another one, that'll be fine, too.
[clip of them playing How Long live / rehearsing it in the "Circle of Fear."]
That's it!

Liked the interview. Wish there had been more comments from Tim and Joe and wish it had been longer. Nice to see though.

Yeah - they trumpeted the fact that it was a rare interview with all four Eagles at once, then didn't really talk to two of them! I doubt Joe and Tim got individual interviews, either. It's possible they did and TPTB that just edited them out, of course.
Brooke - the part at Dan Tana's was the "Body Language" part. They never said where they were.

Don was probably glancing around the room because it was the old hangout, Dan Tana's, and he hadn't been there in a while. He was probably just thinking about how different it looked.
Exactly!
And they definitely should've identified where they were, Dan Tana's or the Troubador (since I had no clue) and told viewers why that place was important.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong...but wasn't Lyin Eyes written there?

Nice one Soda! As you say, the quality wasn't great with the video several seconds behind the audio, but for someone like me who hadn't had a hope of seeing it live it was quite a respectable alternative. I liked the way Don deferred to the band as being Glenn  's band rom the start, as many people forget that, and also the fact that they both admitted to being friends without hesitation. Just my tuppence worth

The title of Lyin' Eyes may have been thought of at the Troubadour (it was certainly in a bar). Don & Glenn wrote the song at the house they shared which was once owned by Dorothy Lamour.
I'm so glad I got to see that. The body language was fine. I did expect Tim to suddenly say 'it's not the circle of fear'.... and I would have liked to have seen Glenn's face while Don was doing the 'it's his band' stuff.
And hooray for this wonderful cut and paste method of obtaining screen shots.

When I was looking at FP's screencap in Glenn's thread, I was reminded of something that I noticed immediately while watching the show. Did anyone else notice that when they were singing "How Long" in the "Circle of Fear" that Glenn didn't take his eyes off of Don? I thought it was cute. lol

Soda, thank you SO much for posting the YouTube links to this programme. It is so much appreciated. I asked a colleague of mine, who has Digital Satellite Television (DSTV) to check out her selection of channels to see if one of them was screening it, but with no success. I was so pleased when I could download it from YouTube. The audio and video may not have been in sync, but so what (as Don would say  )? As long as I could hear and see them.
Soda, thank you also for the transcription of the programme. I was very amused when the interviewer asked Glenn  what makes The Eagles still so popular, and he answered by naming all their hits! I don't know if it's just me, but I sensed a little bit of irritation from Glenn's  side - surely it is obvious that their success is attributed to their music still being so popular. The voiceovers contained some of the statistics, after all, so it's not as though they needed an answer to that .
As for the perceived uncomfortable body language from Don and Glenn  as they sat together, I noticed that Don looked a little uncomfortable, but I doubt it had much to do with Glenn . I think it has more to do with the uncomfortable atmosphere that the interviewer created with his question about whether or not they're friends!
I also enjoyed Don's much more positive attitude towards and comments about the band and the new album. Good on you, Don! That's what I like to see. I thought his acknowledgement of The Eagles being Glenn's  band was very gracious of him.
I loved the scenes of the "Circle of Fear" - I wish I could get my band to do more of that - much more  - and be willing to do songs "over and over again" until they're perfect! No wonder The Eagles are so brilliant - they're willing to do the work! I loved Timmy's comment about "why don't you like my song?" and Joe's about "working on our craft".
All round, I must agree with DF and a couple of other comments here regarding the limited amount of the interview we were shown. It's understandable that the general public needed an overview of the band and their career in between, but then they should have made the segment longer.

I agree that it could have been better. I was kind of suprised again to see just how good Joe looks! And it was so nice to see him smile......and not just a little smile......a SMIIIILE! lol I don't even remember what he said....just the smile! lol
I thought it was interesting that Tim popped in with the "why don't you like my song" comment. lol
Maleah, it's great that you mentioned Joe's smile - I think that's about the first time I see him on camera smiling and actually showing his teeth! Yes, I agree that he looked very good.
Timmy's comment amused me - I think he perhaps revealed a little more about the workings of the band with that comment than Don and Glenn  might have wanted him to!

I thought the whole "body language" part was ridiculous as Don had his arm stretched out across the booth toward Glenn. There was no body language going on. Don was looking around and Glenn had his elbows on the table. This is body language? They weren't leaning away from one another or turned or scooted away from one another. I thought Don's comment that they ware like brothers is probably very accurate. After all, you love your brother to death...but sometimes you want to strangle him.

To me Glenn looked as if ONE person had got ONE note wrong he was going to fire them. I found the circle of fear segment very insightful. It's a pity that they obviously rehearsd NMWITW and then they didn't sing it at the LA shows. I would have liked to have seen more of the rehearsal footage than the old stuff. And I loved the 'hands' bit too.

That's what I saw too - intense concentration so they got those harmonies right and all started lines at the same time. The hands reminded me of the way Glenn used to snap to signal when to start lines in Seven Bridges Road.

Thanks for these high quality versions, Soda. I've just watched both of them. I agree with comments that too much of the actual interviews was cut out,but I think programmes like these have to cater for fans who are not so well informed as us, hence putting in old clips and photos. There are probably a lot of people out there who have one or two Eagles albums and will buy LROOE, but who have never seen the old videos such as HC and ITC. Perhaps it will inspire them to look at fan websites!
Joe's smile is wonderful, and I watched in awe as Glenn related all the hits in chronological order without any hesitation - a memory like an elephant indeed!

Every day this week at least one person has approached me at work to discuss the Eagles on 60 minutes. Apparently, word has gotten around that I'm the person to see if you want to talk Eagles. I'm not sure how it's happened. I don't talk about them much at work.
