Oh that's fantastic, GA! I'm so happy for the boys. Of course, they MUST win both awards! :D :D :D

Too bad it won't be screened locally (not to my knowledge, anyway).

Wow, it's an achievement to get a nomination, with the anti-Eagles ethic that usually prevails with the British press. I may sound pessimistic, but I don't think they'll win. It will be worth watching for the clips. (Remember those Grammy awards clips? :) )'

Next show... who is going to tape this award show? :?: And if there is someone can I have a copy of the entire show? I wanted to ask once again since no one responded to my request.

I will not promise Dreamer as the last time I tried to tape something (The Eagles on the CMA's) I got nothing on the disc :( . I don't want anyone to be depending on me and then I let them down. However I WILL TRY! If I suceed I cand make copies easily enough for anyone who wants them. But its only an 'if it works'

That is great :D Just looked at the other nominees though and I'm thinking they will not win :( The Foo Fighters have just won a Grammy and The White Stripes are popular and sort of quirky which might give them an edge. Fingers crossed though.

I should mention they won Best International Album at the Hungarian Music Awards. There was a brief mention of it on the official site.

That's cool news, FP. Their music even reaches to Hungary. Have they ever performed there?

Tbs fanatic, reluctantly I have to agree with you about the Brits. The music critics over here have given high praise to the Foo Fighters and Kings Of Leon, and the White Stripes have also featured in reviews over here. Still, fingers crossed, and surely the sales must help.

They haven't been to Hungary as yet. The most they did of Eastern Europe was Moscow in 2001.

Thanks for that. I thought their only venture across the old Iron Curtain was Russia.

Aw, they got beaten by the Foo Fighters in both categories. I wonder where the Foo Fighters will be in 30 years time, and I wonder if we'll still be listening to the Eagles. I think I know.

Stuff the Brits - EAGLES FOR EVER!!!

I agree entirely Glenneaglesfan. I watched quite a bit of the Brit awards, and if those acts are the best we can come up with in Britain today...well, I'm ashamed to be British. Most categories were won by a person or group who will be unheard of in 2 or 3 years , let alone 30 years time. :unimpressed: Why have we become so superficial? - image seems to have taken over from talent. As you said 'Stuff the Brit Awards'. Maybe not winning shows the Eagles are something more than superficial.

LOL
Steph

p.s. and I didn't see one guy on there who had the charm, charisma & enduring good looks of our Eagles boys.

p.p.s. Why oh WHY do we have to wheel out Paul McCartney again.... :nausea: he hasn't made a decent record in about 35 years & his only recent claim to fame is being stupid enough to marry former porn star Heather Mills.. God preserve us!!!

Hear, hear, glenneaglesfan and StephUK. The Brit awards are an embarrassment, unless you truly believe the likes of the Arctic Monkeys represent the best of Britain.

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. We all recognise the influence of the Beatles, but how many times are we going to honour the same people for the same things? The Beatles already won this award as a group a long time ago. Well at least he is a better choice than the winners of the award in 2000... The Spice Girls. What tosh!

The Brit awards are a load of tripe.

Regarding Sir Paul.... this is a sore point with me. The man is one of the greatest geniuses of all time, in my opinion, and he has been reduced to a tabloid wreck who was deluded by a shameless golddigger.

It isn't true that he hasn't made a decent record in 35 years though. After Band On The Run, I would nominate Venus & Mars, London Town, Tug Of War, Flowers In The Dirt and Flaming Pie as worth a listen. None of these are the masterpiece which is Band On The Run but I venture to suggest they will be around longer than the current British flavour of the week which seems to change every time you look.

Having said that, why did he have to perform a 'medley of his hits'? He is PAUL MCCARTNEY!!!!!!

And I'm not being unpatriotic when I say how I wish Kylie Minogue would go away. Permanently. One day there may be some evidence found that she has talent. I said MAYBE.

Mrs Frey

Well, I didn't get to see the Brit Awards, but it looks as though I didn't miss much. Foo Fighters indeed! Their performance at the Grammies hurt my ears! :unimpressed: And they call this music? I'm sorry, that racket does not qualify as music in my book. I can't believe the Eagles lost out to them.

Regarding Paul McCartney, I'm sorry Steph, but I emphatically agree with FP. If Paul was on the Brits, then that is the only reason I would have wanted to watch. I love him, he is a genius indeed, and "Flaming Pie", which was released in 1997, is one of the few albums of his that I am privileged enough to own, and I think it's a great album. By the sounds of things, having Paul on the Brits probably gave it some credibility. I feel sorry for him for what he is going through now with the divorce. What happened to him could have happened to any lonely man who'd lost his wife after 29 years. He got lonely, and he was deceived. My heart goes out to him.

FP, I have to agree with you about Kylie Minogue. I have nothing against her as a person, and my heart went out to her when she fell ill, but I've never enjoyed her music. My apologies to all those who are fans.

I'm Irish, but near enough to Britain, and for a long time our music has been influenced by British music so I do feel qualified to comment.

I thought the Brit awards were dreadful, and that language used by Sharon Osbourne at prime time viewing was disgraceful.

Mrs Frey
02-21-2008, 09:15 AM
Sharon Osbourne. Hmmm. Why am I not surprised?

These are the people who make the news, but our boys (at least in my country) hardly make the papers.

StephUK

Sorry to have upset the Paul McCartney fans. I just don't see anything in his music. I have the sad memory of 'Mull of Kintyre' being at No.1 in our charts for what seemed like years! (and the Frog Chorus, or whatever it was called). I have to grant you that Wings did some better stuff than most of the 'musicians and singers'(and I use those terms loosely) who appeared on the Brits last night, but he hasn't really come up with anything very inspired in the last decade now has he?
I have a certain amount of respect for Linda, who had beliefs and stood up for them, and it was sad that she took ill and died. However, I think that Paul was stupid to marry Heather Mills. I think he let his flattered ego rule over common sense on that one.
Music wise, we'll just have to agree to differ.

At the risk of upsetting more people, I think the worst on the Brits was Mika....how embarrassing.

Maybe I'm just getting old, but many of the singers/bands seem to be just run of the mill nowadays. Of course there were always so-so bands & one hit wonders, but there were also singers/bands that stood out from the rest. Maybe it's down to the songwriting. As I inferred in my previous message, maybe they need to take more time & effort to get a good song and less on the image side of things.

It's amazing the people that achieve 'fame' - when you compare them to people like Gram Parsons :applause: who was an exceptional songwriter & performer but is hardly known. It's a funny old world!

LOL

Hmmm... seems the Brit Award show was not worth watching. I'll be watching it tonight, MTV will broadcast for 2 hours so only the highlights, if there were any  , will show up.
I really was happy as I heard Take That won 2 awards, they so deserve it. :D I saw them on youtube accepting their award but want to see it in TV as well.
Too bad for the Eagles that they didn't win. :?

I also have a great amount of respect for Paul McCartney. Even if he never writes or records another song, the mark that he has made on musical history is indelible. He is a true legend. As far as the recent problems in his personal life, I just chalk it up as 'unfortunate' since there are always "three sides to every story - there's yours, and there's mine, and the cold, hard truth" as another music legend once sang.

You didn't offend anyone, Steph, but it might be an idea if you had a listen to Sir Paul's old band. I believe they were called the Beatles. They did the occasional OK tune.

And I LOVED Mull Of Kintyre! I still love it! I know it was #1 in Britain for a long time but so was Bryan Adams' Everything I Do (I Do It For You) .... (Gag).... now I say sorry to Bryan Adams fans!

The Eagles, by the way, could not have won a Brit award, or the organisers would have been savaged by such reputable organs of the press as NME and Q. They can't allow that.

Highlighted text: FP, this cracked me up!

I also love "Mull Of Kintyre". I believe it actually broke a record previously held by The Beatles with "She Loves You" for the longest running no. 1 in Britain.

As far as I know, "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" was no. 1 for 16 weeks, which broke all previous records. FP, you'll be disappointed to know that the song is one of my staples in our band! It always goes down a treat, though, and I admit that I love singing it.

I figured the Foo Fighters would win - they seem to be the flavor of the month. I didn't see the Brit Awards and it sounds like I didn't miss much. As a transplanted Brit I always hope they are going to be good but the Brit Awards always come across as just WEIRD :? Kylie Minogue - they always have her on but why? Paul doing a medley :? I know he's PAUL MCCARTNEY but couldn't he just do some new stuff - I know he has some. Oh well, I'll probably have a quick look at some highlights - ever hoping there will be someone good on

I liked a lot of the Beatles stuff. Always thought John Lennon was the genius though not Paul.

I'm also quite a Bryan Adams fan. I liked 'Everything I do' but did get a bit fed up with it when it was No 1 for ages. I can listen to it now quite happily - especially the extended album version. I like a lot of his other stuff too.

I agree with what has been said here about the Eagles not winning an award. It's all down to who is flavour of the month, not the quality of the music. Then, it always has been. I don't think it has ever been 'cool' in the UK to like the Eagles - except maybe briefly when the Hotel California album first came out.

The Eagles are still going strong though!! Where will these 'award winners' be in 5 years time? We'll see.

LOL

McCartney's genius is less 'obvious' as Lennon's but it exists. I cite Eleanor Rigby, Yesterday, Penny Lane, Hey Jude, For No-One, Get Back, Back In The USSR, We Can Work It Out (though John's contribution to this is what makes the song work so well), And I Love Her, etc.

John vs Paul is like Don vs Glenn. The analogy works to a certain extent. Indeed it has been used by Glenn himself. Rather than say one is superior, I say that both pairs of artists are/were brilliant songwriters, musicians and singers, and both bands were unique to have two such exceptional talents. I honestly believe this is why the Eagles are second only to the Beatles. While the Stones have Mick/Keith, Keith's singing ability, while idiosyncratic, isn't on the same level as the Beatles/Eagles pair.

tbs fanatic
02-24-2008, 04:28 PM
When I saw the Stones and Keith did his part 'Mick had left the stage' the audience really didn't like it. They didn't exactly boo him but almost - I felt bad for him.

I like a lot of what the Beatles wrote. I loved 'Mull of Kintyre' when it was in the charts (and I was still a kid!), also 'Imagine' and 'Yesterday'. I think my favourite would be 'Hey Jude' but I wouldn't be very familiar with who wrote or sang what, or any of the politics of the band, unlike with the Eagles!!
