I'm also one that likes Learn To Be Still and think it is an underrated song. BUT, it is not nearly as good as Life's Been Good so I urge others to save LBG for a little while longer by joining with me to protect it ...

I cast my vote for Learn To Be Still.

And about the 40th Anniversary, yes indeed. I'll give an example. So in HC, Joe actually mucks up the first part for his solo, but it was changed in the release.

I was asking when and how it was changed. I guess they could have dubbed in a Joe part from another concert recording of the solo.

I have liked SBR since I first heard it on Greatest Hits Vol. 2, but similar to FP I have grown disillusioned by it. This is supposed to be a showcase for their great harmonies but instead it’s a product of studio trickery. Too bad there aren’t any another recordings of it (that I’m aware of anyway besides the 1975 Seattle bootleg).

Still, I don’t want to vote for it yet. I’ve kind of gone back and forth...I also like Learn to Be Still but it’s not up to par with LBG, overdubs or no overdubs. LBG deserves to be in the top 3, imho.

With some reluctance, my vote goes to Learn to Be Still.

There is a version from the Long Beach concert on the eagles online central it’s under the featured audio show. After listening to that version and the Seattle one, I’m not particularly bothered because I know that they were still so good live and they were being super picky about small details

Well although it put up a respectable fight worthy of a true survivor, the next song to be eliminated in Non-Studio Album Songs Survivor is Life’s Been Good. “Life’s Been Good” lucky you’re sane after all you’ve been through. Its hard to leave when you can’t find the door, but the tribe has finally spoken. So, time to jump in your Maserati and head off the island doing 185.

I vote for Hole in the world. Nice harmonies but the rest of the song In my
Opinion is lacking. In a defense of seven bridges road, only Glenn and Felder’s part have any edits as far as I can tell. Most of Glenn’s part is still his and Felder’s part is just a simple bass part. When the band played this song, the crowd knew how good they were. You can hear other versions, they had stunning harmonies. Just because there was overdubbing, doesn’t mean they weren’t capable of that sound. They were just being extremely perfectionist

You miss the point.

The version they chose to release on their official live album is fraudulent. It is not 'live'. If they were so good the overdubs should not have been necessary. If you deliberately take out one of the singer's parts & replace it with another singer, that is wrong & amounts to deception. We are not voting for what the crowd allegedly saw when they played the song live. We are voting for the 'official' version.

I really don't wish to debate the rights & wrongs of it, because I know that most people are not bothered by it. I gave my reasons for why I voted for it, I am entitled to them & I stand by them.

I know this won't bother everyone. However, I don't like how it makes out Jesus to be one of a series of people with meaningless and empty messages, going so far as to equate the crucifixion with trendy gurus losing popularity. I don't expect Christian messages from the Eagles, of course. I understand that Don Henley, who wrote the lyrics, does indeed believe Jesus Christ was a deluded "starry-eyed messiah" and is one of the "wrong gods" people are following home. He has every right to use his music to preach to us about it, and I have every right to dislike the taste of his disdain.

Say what you like about "Hole in the World" - at least it brings us all together.

Another thing about LTBS - it sounds like a solo track stuck onto an Eagles album, whereas HITW is a real group effort with its magnificent, soaring harmonies.

Well, the best two versions are 1976 Seattle and 1980 Santa Monica. By this I mean a 29th July audience recording which my friends have. Brilliant version with harmonies equal to the released one. It is just stunning there.

I will use your quote to explain why I am voting for Seven Bridges Road.

While I knew the live album was fake & overdubbed, for some reason I thought that 7BR was about the only track which did represent what they sounded like live. (I guess I thought the version of LBG was fairly real too, but it isn't according to you).

Then not long ago I discovered that part of Glenn's vocal has been removed from it & replaced with a second part by Don Henley. It utterly turned me off the song, which I vowed I would never listen to again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCT9dpphUD4

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMPmdqZNaFA

This is an extreme reaction on my part. I am well aware that this song will probably win this game. But to me it is a fraud. And even if I hadn't found out that information, I was bored with the song anyway. They didn't write it. It isn't what it seems.

I haven't reacted to this but I didn't know this and I too am really upset and disappointed by it.

However, could this be partially because Glenn wasn't interested in coming into the studio and fixing up his own parts, so Don did it out of necessity? He was really disconnected from the band at this time.

Regardless, the fakeness of it sucks, although of course I was aware that it was "fixed up" to sound perfect.

I think you’re right about why Don filled In Glenn’s part. Based on how Felder describes that time of the band, and how Glenn was just ready to call it quits after that concert, I believe that’s why Henley filled in for Glenn

I do agree about the probable reason for it, and let's be honest here. That's on Glenn & his mood as much as it is on the others. It would have been better not to include the song at all. But as we know, it was not the only song where this stuff occurred.

I think it was a disparagement of all religions and attempts to find spiritual fulfillment outside of oneself, but obviously the imagery deliberately calls to mind Christ.

I vote for Seven Bridges Road (Steve Young cover)

It is just fraudulent. Actually, Eagles Live is a fraud in itself. It is just re-recorded tracks posing as a live album. I actually think people should go through Freypower's reasoning. The main reason I feel 7BR is not getting that many votes is because people don't know or care about the pseudo-live nature of this track. The saddest thing is, they instead could've taken any other version which was good. And keep the imperfections. It will actually feel live.

As for LTBS, I never thought Don was disparaging Jesus! I really need to work on my interpretive skills. But either way, at least it is a genuine studio recording. Unlike *cough* 7BR, sold off as live. The brief solo by Felder I feel is great, and is personally my second favorite, musically (with first being Get Over It). But at the same time, it sounds like a Don Henley solo track worthy of being on End of the Innocence rather than being on HFO.

As for HITW, I did not like the track too much. Harmonies are good, though I feel it is repetitive and underwhelming. I actually thought maybe of voting off this one, but with the fraudulent nature of the live tracks, they have to go!!! Lyrics are meaningful too, but that too is kinda repetitive.

I would like to vote for Seven Bridges Road but it only has two votes, so I'm going to go with Hole in the World, which has 3, in a lame attempt to save Learn to Be Still.

To me, Learn to Be Still is about Don finally finding his own personal peace, after many years of being tortured by demons (perhaps mostly of his own making). Songs like Life in the Fast Lane and Hotel California are great, but they speak of a tortured soul.

And yes, I can understand why some people might be offended by the anti-religion sentiment. But fortunately or unfortunately, they are lyrically some of the best parts of the song, IMO. As an artist, you have to speak what comes from your heart and mind and not worry about the sensibilities of others. As with all art, some people will relate to it and others won't, but if there's not truth to it, it doesn't mean anything. I don't see that as preaching at all.

Wow - there's a lot to talk about here. So, I'll comment on each song remaining in the game.

Seven Bridges Road - I am somewhat disturbed about the overdubbing, but it is something that is done often by almost all bands, so, right or wrong, I guess it has become more acceptable. It doesn't change the fact for me that this is a gorgeous song and I absolutely love it.

Get Over It - I like this song a lot, but not as much as some. I think it's the melody of the song that keeps me from adoring it. Still, it does rock and I love the message.

Learn To Be Still - I think this is an underrated song, and I like it a lot. I do agree that it would have been a better fit for Don's EOTI album though and I find the theme of this song very similar to Little Tin God. My interpretation is that inner peace and spiritual fulfillment come from within if you stop long enough to listen to oneself. Starry-eyed messiahs can also be a reference to the flawed, pompous, and disingenuous 'leaders' (e.g. televangelists) that seek wealth and notoriety by exploiting religion. However, as with most good songs, I believe it is open to multiple interpretations.

Hole in the World - This song has gorgeous harmonies and a very emotional sentiment. But, other than that, it doesn't have much more going for it. To me, it becomes awfully monotonous and repetitious after the first verse and is definitely the weakest song left in the game.

Right now, Learn To Be Still and Hole in the World are neck and neck. I urge others to join me in saving LTBS for one more round ...

I cast my vote for Hole in the World.

We're not just talking about overdubbing. We're talking about scrapping one of the so-called 'live' parts & replacing it with a studio part. Not only is it a studio part but it is sung by somebody else. I've never heard of any other live album being doctored the way this one was. Saying that everybody does it doesn't make it right.

Totally agree Soda ! I love the song. I believe Glenn's voice was dubbed over by Don because Glenn had already quit the group. Remember, he refused to have anything to do with the others and work in Miami with them. Just MHO, but by the time he agreed to go into the studio in LA that song was probably already completed. Do I think it was right - no, but I still love the song.

You know, this was not done behind Glenn's back. He must have been OK with it. Otherwise, Felder would have been sure to tell us all about Glenn's anger in his book!

Heck, Glenn may have even suggested it. "I don't want to come in. Have Don do it."

I understand being upset and disappointed at the shattering of an illusion that this was the five of them harmonizing live - I feel that, too! And I agree it would have been better to hear Glenn's voice throughout, even if it meant some less than perfect notes here and there. The fact that it's not the five harmonizing throughout is lame, frankly. It makes the song less special, and that degree of studio manipulation makes the "live" aspect a real joke.

But I don't really understand the moral outrage and anger, if it was a choice they all agreed upon to achieve "perfection" (however misguided the notion is that perfection is more important than authenticity).

Glenn was not wronged or hurt by this if he preferred it to actual recording. They were accommodating him if that were the case.

So if Glenn wasn't wronged, then who did they hurt?

Glenn was not wronged or hurt by this if he preferred it to actual recording. They were accommodating him if that were the case.

So if Glenn wasn't wronged, then who did they hurt?

The fans who thought they were getting a live version of SBR! Sure, a lot casual fans will never know and/or not care, but for those who are really into music, it doesn’t sit right.

Also, Glenn’s reputation as a singer—what does it say that some of his parts had to be replaced by Henley’s? I’m not 100% sure he even knew about it.

That being said, SBR is by far the best song of the remaining 3, in terms of melody, lyrics, vocal performance, popularity and longevity. It’s a real shame that none of Joe’s solo songs made it to the final 3 b/c IMO, they are so much better than “Hole in the World” or the generic rocker rant “Get Over It” ( although I do like the intro). As was pointed out earlier, at least HITW is uplifting.

My vote goes to Get Over It.

What I think is odd about SBR, is that they isolated vocal tracks are released with the HFO DVD. You need a special audio setup to listen to it but they did release it out. No one could tell that there was studio parts involved until that was released out. It’s interesting that they gave out the isolated tracks with that in mind

This. And the cynicism, the obsession with alleged 'perfectionism' apparently overriding any concern for legitimacy. As I said if Glenn went along with it it's a bad reflection on him too.

And it hurt me personally, as a fan, to know this had occurred.

I vote for Get Over It.

I'm judging on the overall sound and how likely I am to listen to the track. I rarely try to pick out the individual parts of a track so while it's intellectually disappointing that a "live" track has so many fixes, I'm able to ignore that while listening.

I enjoy the harmonies and the sentiments of Hole in the World.

I definitely prefer Get Over It to Hole In The World.

Again, as usual, I think of the Eagles as a guitar band and not a vocal harmony band, so songs like GOI really cement that for me. I don't really care about harmony vocals all that much as a uptempo rock n' roll guy.

I never listen to HOTW. I listen to GOI and SBR fairly often. I think GOI is underrated.

It's funny how fans of the same band have such different perspectives. I love the guitar (and let's face it, the Eagles wouldn't be the Eagles without all the great guitar work and solos). Still, the lyrics and the vocals, especially the harmonies, are what matter most to me.

I like and dislike different things about the three remaining songs, but one doesn't really stand out to me over the others, so I'm going to refrain from voting from here on in.

Yeah I concur. I always saw the Eagles as a rock band more than a vocal band. My first few songs I ever listened to are all rockers (Hotel California, Take It Easy and their cover of Joe Walsh's Turn to Stone). In fact, for a rock band, their vocals are better than most! Many other rock bands' vocalists just scream! Those 3 songs I mentioned are what made me think, "they rock!" Only after that I listened to their ballads.

Get Over It is my favorite HFO song, and arguably my favorite of all songs after reunification. I like how all 3 guitarists got a part in it. Felder's part particularly rocks, and those solos easily win over the repetitiveness of HITW (though that has decent vocals) and the fakeness, and fraudulent nature of SBR. I am surprised that no one cares about it tbh (no offence).

Also, slightly off topic, the Seven Bridges Road version I listen to most often is 1980 Long Beach. They sounded so stellar and genuine there. And that high pitch of that bootleg (which is due to an error of the recorder btw) makes the effect more prominent to me for some reason. My favorite version of GOI is the Burbank DVD version.

If they had insulted Glenn that badly, Felder would have gleefully written about it.

If they were in a time crunch and Glenn was MIA, I could see it happening esp. if Glenn had already expressed disinterest about it.

Didn’t someone say Felder’s part was also doctored? I don’t think he could have mentioned Glenn’s parts being replaced without also having to mention his part was also faked—if he even knew about it himself.

the fakeness, and fraudulent nature of SBR. I am surprised that no one cares about it tbh (no offence).

Actually several of us expressed reservations about it so we do care, but what can we do? I certainly don’t go out of my way to listen to this version anymore. However, I still believe the song to be better than many of the other candidates, plus it was a “new” song back when I bought my first Eagles album, so it holds some sentimental value for me. If SBR were going up against higher-caliber songs, then my vote would be different. It’s regrettable so much studio doctoring went on esp. b/c it probably wasn’t even necessary.

My vote goes to Seven Bridges Road for the win.

My vote goes to SBR. This song is so iconic in terms of just establishing the band’s harmonies. It’s doctored but it is largely authentic. You can just lesson to the first seconds of it and it is just gorgeous. Get over it is a good song, but It doesn’t stick with me as well. SBR is just so Eagles and thus takes my vote

I love "Get Over It" and I think it's a really underrated song with a great tune, a driving beat, a hot guitar solo, and a timely message (despite the cuss word). It is a Henley/Frey composition, which is definitely in its favor in terms of whether it deserves to win this competition, and as has been emphasized so much, it is "genuine."

(However, I must note that it says something to their brilliance in the studio that the fraud of "Seven Bridges Road" has only come to light now, decades later.)

All of these facts made me seriously consider voting for "Get Over It" for the win, which is something I never would have done when we played this game in the past.

Yet, despite all of this, I finally decided to vote for "Seven Bridges Road" because in the end, I simply enjoy the song more. I love to sing along with it, and its harmony, despite the little fraudulent pieces, showcases those great Eagles vocals. I remember desperately hoping the band would do this live and when they did, for just a while, I was in ecstasy. I don't think I would feel that way about them doing "Get Over It," as much as I like that song.

Ugh. :(

Congrats to SBR, but GOI is still the underdog. And an Henley/Frey composition.

For me, hearing the news about SBR certainly diminished it for me, but honestly it was never my choice to win, it just lowered it some. I prefer LBG to SBR.

It cements that most people love and think of the Eagles for their vocals and harmony singing. I see them as a guitar band, as much as Van Halen. The guitar stylings blending together, the solos, and the riffs made the band what it was for me. I never paid too much attention to the lyrics or vocals. For me GOI is a GREAT example of the Eagles as a guitar-centric band. For me it's not about how the vocals come together, it's about how 3 guitarists with all different models of guitars came together. When one was playing a Gibson, the other was automatically playing a Fender. Joe and Felder never played the same guitar on the same song. It was always that blend that made them the best guitar band.

Anyways to celebrate, here is a version of Seven Bridges Road from Santa Monica again, this time a genuine recording, from July 29th 1980 (the same date wherein performances from Life's Been Good and Hotel California were taken from for Eagles Live). NO OVERDUBS at all on this one. This, at least imo is such a good version, I really do wonder why they did not even think of choosing this one:

Same here fam!!

That's how it always was for me. That's especially why I love Walsh and Felder the most amongst everyone else musically. For me it was their indelible meshing and mix of guitar (esp. 1976 till 1999), sometimes soft, sometimes in the middle, sometimes hard, which just did it for me. I indeed love good guitar most of the time. That's also why, as a 16 year old, I never liked today's music. The thing is, if I looked for vocals and harmony, there are plenty of groups and artists today. I also loved that they all had different models meshing together for songs.

However Get Over It is a bad example. In the version we voted for (the studio version) as well as the two Burbank performances, Walsh and Felder had the same guitar (a Les Paul).

Soda and I were talking the other night about the results of this game. Since there was a lot of coalition voting, we wondered if the order of finish is truly reflective of the voters preferences. Therefore, we thought it may be a good idea to have folks list your favorites as we have done recently for some of the albums. It may be interesting to see how the results compare to the game that we just finished.

I'll go ahead and repost the 'rules' here. Anyone can to post their list, even if they didn't participate in the game. So here's a recap how this works for those folks who may be new to this ...

This isn’t exactly a game, but more like a poll with no other purpose than to be an exercise of fun. I’m going to list all the songs from this game and ask folks to rank them in the order that they like the songs from favorite to least favorite. I’ll give folks a week to post their list in this thread, and then I’ll calculate the results so you can see how close your list is to the combined results and the results of the Survivor game.

I’ll calculate the lists like this. There are 12 songs in this game, so I’ll assign a point value of 12 points to the song that each person lists in 1st place, 11 points for the 2nd place song, and so on until the last place song gets 1 point as follows:

Song 1 – 12 points
Song 2 – 11 points
Song 3 – 10 points
Song 4 – 9 points
Song 5 – 8 points
Song 6 – 7 points
Song 7 – 6 points
Song 8 – 5 points
Song 9 – 4 point
Song 10 – 3 points
Song 11 – 2 points
Song 12 – 1 point

For example, Person A puts the song ‘ABC’ in 3rd place so it gets 10 points; Person B puts ‘ABC’ in 5th place so it gets 8 points; and Person C puts ‘ABC’ in 6th place so it gets 7 points. So all total, the song ‘ABC’ gets 25 points. Then, Person A puts the song ‘XYZ’ in 1st place so it gets 12 points; Person B puts ‘XYZ’ in 4th place so it gets 9 points; and Person C puts ‘XYZ’ in 2nd place so it gets 11 points. So all total, the song ‘XYZ’ gets 32 points.

After I calculate the combined scores from everyone’s list, I’ll post the list in the order of which songs had the highest points to the lowest. You will be able to see how close your list comes to the “master” list. If others post a list after a week, I’ll update it with their scores. So here we go – the songs for this poll are as follows:

Get You in the Mood
Please Come Home for Christmas
Funky New Year
All Night Long
Life’s Been Good
Seven Bridges Road
Get Over It
The Girl from Yesterday
Learn to Be Still
Love Will Keep Us Alive
Hole in the World
One Day at a Time

Now, list these songs in the order of your most favorite to least favorite.

My Order:

1. Get Over It
2. One Day at a Time
3. Learn to be Still
4. Hole in the World
5. Love Will Keep Us Alive
6. The Girl from Yesterday
7. Life's Been Good (Joe Walsh cover)

10. Get You in the Mood
11. Please Come Home for Christmas (Charles Brown cover)

If you want to play the scoring game, you need to assign them points.

And I liked both the "natural" versions of SBR, but I prefer the Seattle 1976 one (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/xp6su9).

Darn! But, congrats to SBR! Beautiful song! It had always been one of my favorites until I heard about all the overdubbing!

I've always loved Get Over It too, though, and still believe that it should have won.

Anyway, as far as those two live recordings posted, I like the first one best which includes Glenn's harmonica! Absolutely gorgeous! And seeing the band live helps! :smokin:

Here's my list:

Get Over It-12 points
Learn to be Still-11 points
Hole in the World-10
The Girl From Yesterday-9
Seven Bridges Road-8
Love Will Keep Us Alive-7
One Day At a Time-6
Life's Been Good-5
All Night Long-4
Please Come Home For Christmas-3
Get You in the Mood-2
Funky New Year-1 (actually it should be 0 points! lol)

Congrats to Seven Bridges Road! Regardless of the unfortunate editing of the song, it has been a constant and consistent part of the band’s setlist for many years, for good reason.

Damn it! The fraudulent recording won. Oh well, I guess not everyone cares about fakeness.

Thanks for the link, cosec! At first the crowd noise sounded suspiciously like the Live version. It is a good version although I don’t hear much bass.

IMHO, Joe’s songs shine the most in this list.

Interesting that the top two finishers peaked at #21 (SBR) and #31 (GOI) on the Billboard charts while bottom 3 finisher PCHFC outranked them both by peaking at #18.

After the reunion the band took a long time to return this song to their setlist .Also, when I saw them do it, they only did the first verse & midsection, not the whole song. I was frankly underwhelmed by it. Something else people have been neglecting to mention is the fact that they didn't write it. And even if I hadn't found out about the fraud, I was bored with it. It's a slice of Americana I guess which doesn't really appeal to me any more.

Here's my list. LBG was always the best song on the list of songs we had. I just prefer it to everything else.

Life's Been Good - 12
Get Over It - 11
Seven Bridges Road - 10
All Night Long - 9
One Day At A Time - 8
Love Will Keep Us Alive - 7
Please Come Home For Christmas - 6
Funky New Year - 5
The Girl From Yesterday - 4
Hole In The World - 3
Get You In The Mood - 2
Learn To Be Still - 1

For me LBG was the strongest song, LTBS was the weakest song.

I did a lot of coalition voting to save what I thought was the best song - LBG. It didn't matter to me that it wasn't originally an Eagles song. I never cared for Joe's solo version or to hear him do it in his solo show. It was always a band song to me, that came alive when played with a big band with backup vocals and dueling guitars. It really shined in that atmosphere. As a record I think BSF is weak, but that's for another thread another day. I love LBG as a Eagles song.

Yeah, though it is an audience recording so that is kind of expected. But once it goes into the drum based songs, bass is incredible. But aren't those harmonies impeccable?

Intersting placement. Though I'd place LBG way lower. Too much overdubbing for this song, at least based on my hearing. And even I did coalition voting.

REMINDER:

Just want to let everyone know that you still have a few more days to post your list of songs in this game in order of favorite to least favorite. Refer back to my Post #347 for more details about how this works. Hopefully, we can get more folks to participate so we will have a more accurate reflection of what our true likes and dislikes are among these songs. I will post the results sometime this coming Thursday evening after 8:00 p.m. Eastern time.

YEF - There are 12 songs that must be ranked and you have only listed 11. Please go back and edit your list to include the 12th song otherwise I can't include your list in the final compilation. Also, Soda asked everyone to include the points beside the songs on their list - see her Post #351.

Okay - I have compiled the result of our poll and, as suspected, they were somewhat different from the results of the Survivor Game. So, there is a little redemption for Get Over It because it claims the top spot in the poll. However, this may be due, in part, to the fact that several players that voted for Seven Bridges Road in the game did not participate in the poll. But, even so, Seven Bridges Road still came in second. And unlike in the game, Life's Been Good claims third place here. So here goes ...

Get Over It - 145 points
Seven Bridges Road - 134 points
Life’s Been Good - 106 points
Hole In the World - 101 points
Learn To Be Still - 97 points
The Girl From Yesterday - 89 points
Please Come Home For Christmas - 87 points
One Day at a Time - 80 points
Love Will Keep Us Alive - 78 points
All Night Long - 69 points
Get You in the Mood - 67 points
Funky New Year - 39 points

For comparison, the Survivor Game results were as follows ...

Seven Bridges Road
Get Over It
Hole in the World
Learn To Be Still
Life's Been Good
The Girl From Yesterday
One Day at a Time
Love Will Keep Us Alive
Get You in the Mood
Please Come Home for Christmas
All Night Long
Funky New Year

So which list is closer to your own?

BTW - if other members still want to post their list, I'll update the results.
