View Full Version : Writing for Glenn

A woman who passed away earlier this year, Sally Stevens, wrote a poem about Glenn Frey in 1980. She posted it to her Facebook account but now that she's gone, I'm afraid it will just disappear into the ether. It's a moving poem and I hate the idea of it just slipping out of sight forever. So here it is (note: she and Glenn had a relationship during the Longbranch Pennywhistle days).

Sally knows:

drifting mindlessly
between the empty glasses
and the empty conversations
he runs across an old friend
and searching the dusty corners of his mind
he babbles something Meaningful
then moves on to the next customer
the former encounter
apparently slips his mind
or what’s left of it.

“It’s been ten years since I was in LA in August” he said
suddenly turning
looking back
“Sally knows.”
then he’s off through the shifting crowd
between the empty bottles
and the empty eyes
Sally knows

Could it really be so long
yet she is still a part
of his herky jerky life
his rock and rollercoaster ride
down the bumpy years
to journey’s end
to home at last?
Sally knows

Back in the beginning
too young and innocent
cheap wine
the long night ride
“listen baby, when I’m famous
you can write a book about me”
holding his guitar against his heart

he’s gonna be a star
he’s gonna make It
look out, world
here comes another fool!
Sally knows
she’s got her finger on the fool button

down the line a bit
caught between the cards
crossing paths at backstage parties
that neither of them want to be at
he doesn’t know what he really wants
but Sally knows
Now, they’re holding life in his honor
bowing and scraping
the song of the jailer
excuse me, sir
your cage is ready
please don’t rock the boat
while the machinery is in motion
have another drink or something
your highness
sign this
nevermind what it is
“oh, all right.”

nothing goes on forever
Sally knows.

Does anyone else have any poetry, stories, etc. about Glenn they'd like to share? Even artwork or other media?

Oh my gosh, I didn’t know Sally Stevens passed away. She used to post on a Doors fan forum. She worked for Electra back in the day and knew the band.

She also worked with the Eagles, in publicity I believe, and told an interesting story about the night they won a Grammy for Hotel California. Randy showed up unexpectedly at the restaurant where the band was meeting members of the press. Sally told Glenn to go downstairs to greet Randy and be nice to him. The black and white photo of them shaking hands is from this night in February 1978.

Thank you for sharing the poem.

Yes, she passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 19 from pneumonia; she had been sick for about a week or so but thought it was just a bad case of the flu and refused to see a doctor. I was completely shocked to discover she had died from it since she had been acting like it was nothing to be worried about. So sad.

There's another photo of Glenn and Randy that she took herself, and she let me post it on GlennFreyOnline (http://www.glennfreyonline.com):

This was also at the Grammy party in 1978; Randy had been teasing Glenn about his beard.

I love that photo! Thanks so much for sharing it. I think she said the name of the restaurant was Le Bistro. She said she also did some publicity work for Randy’s first solo album.

We look forward to people sharing their creativity!

Very nice poem! Thanks for sharing it Soda!

Sally had quite an interesting life. I used to read her blog. So sad she didn't go to the doctor. Evidently she was quite sick.

Thanks for posting the poem (about Glenn Frey). I also have only heard about Sally Stevens from The Doors' old message board. I am sorry she is gone.

Me too. I was thinking about her just the other day. She is missed.
