Since we're using a new software now which will undoubtedly have some kinks to work out, I thought I'd start a new thread.

How do I get the board to remember me when I log in? At the moment I have to enter my username & password each time even though I clicked 'remember me'. I couldn't see any option in the user profile to keep me logged in.

It's remembering me - odd. Are you using Firefox or Internet Explorer?
Maleah
08-17-2008, 09:30 PM
It's remembering me as well, and I'm using IE
Freypower
08-17-2008, 09:30 PM
I'm using Internet Explorer. Also every time I exit and log in again, the time I last visited is still 10.17 am my time, even though the time is now 11.30 am here.
Maleah
08-17-2008, 09:32 PM
FP it's doing the time thing to me too. It's saying I last visited yesterday at 8:57 PM even though I visited twice earlier today
Freypower
08-17-2008, 09:38 PM
Oh well, this must be a temporary problem, because it's also saying the date is 8/16 when it is 8/18 in Australia.

The problem appears to have been solved since I restarted the computer.

The time is off for me. It is 9:52 pm Central and it says its 2:52 am! Somewhere in the profile I found where it is set to Western Europe time. I changed it to Central, but it didn't save it.
Otherwise, everything looks great. I don't know how you get it all done, Soda! Thanks so much for all your hard work.

I had problems last night as the board was telling me I couldn't post as I wasn't online, yet it had me registered as being online. I kept logging in and it still wouldn't recognise me. Restarting the whole computer fixed it!! Probably just teething problems.
The profile also made me 9 months younger

Great job, Soda. Once all the initial glitches are all worked out, this is going to be a really cool board. I already see a lot of new features that I'm going to like a lot. I'm sure the conversion wasn't nearly as seamless as you made it appear, but it looks like it will be worth all of the effort you are putting into it.

Thank you so much, guys! I am trying hard to make this as best as I can! When we got hacked recently, I thought, "I need a board with better security." I got vBulletin as a result, and now I find there are a lot of other things I like about it. While it was indeed a lot of work to do the changeover and there is more work to come, in the end, the hacking was kind of a blessing in disguise. It's given us a better board! :)
Hopefully the log-in and time issues are the most serious we'll have. I'm glad it appears that re-starting one's computer has worked on those problems (so far)!

Are the options for color posts, bold, and italic somewhere?
Also, how do you get a smiley inside the post? Whenever I click on one it goes up to the title of the thread instead of beside my words.
Trivial, I know. Sorry.
Mrs Henley
08-18-2008, 01:50 PM
Brooke, you can find those settings at the tap Setting & Options and than Edit Options
And I can't also work with the smilies..

The features you want can be changed using your settings. I admit it's not very clear!
Go to your CP
Select "Edit Options"
Scroll down to "Miscellaneous Options" where you will see "Message Editor Interface."
Using the drop-down menu, select "Enhanced Interface - Full WYSIWYG Editing." (For the curious - WYSIWYG stands for "What You See Is What You Get.")
If you've done all that and still aren't seeing the formatting options, it's a board glitch.
I'll investigate making that the default rather than "Standard."
Edited to Add: This has been changed to be the default, so you don't have to do the whole User CP thing unless you want to change it BACK to the plain standard.
Once you do that, you'll also see the smilies on the side.
The reason that the ones you have selected in the past - the ones at the bottom - always go in the title line are because they are "post icons." They are to indicate whether your thread is something you're mad about, happy about, etc. Certainly, in the absence of the smilies on the right due to your standard text editor, it's understandable you'd get confused by that! So, to make it short and sweet:
Smilies at the bottom are "post icons" that go in the title; smilies on the side are the ones that go into your post.

I was asked about e-mail notifications:
You have to go into your CP to get notified of replies; click on "Edit options" and then scroll down to "Default Thread Subscription Mode." There, you can select whether or not you want to receive e-mail notifications when someone posts to a topic.
P.S. I changed the title of the thread to be more clear, since I realize that asking about features might not naturally be seen as a "board glitch."

Also, I'd like to point out that in order to check private messages, you need to click on the "Private Message" link in the upper right hand corner. It's under "Welcome" and "You last visited.." If you've got a friend request or something, the link will say "Your Notifications" rather than "Private Message." You can also select to be notified of private messages via e-mail.
To get e-mail notifications of PMs:
1. Go to User CP
2. "Edit Options" on the side panel
3. Scroll down to the "Messaging & Notification" category
4. Check the box for "Receive E-mail Notification of New Private Messages"
That's also where you can check or uncheck the PM pop-up notification.

What does 'add infraction' for a member mean?
sodascouts
08-24-2008, 12:38 PM
That's something only moderators and admins can do. While we've never had to implement it, we do have that "three strikes" thing in the Terms of Service and the infractions are how we keep track of that. Three "infractions," or "strikes," and you're out!

I'm still not real great on the computer so I need to ask a question. I received a Private Message from a Jessie. After I answered it, I deleted the message. BUT everytime I go to change threads I still get a "pop-up" window that tells me I have a message, How do I get the "pop-up" to go away? On the right side of the screen under Private Messages it shows unread 0 and total 0.

How weird! Try logging out and logging back in again. That should "Clear the cookies."
And if you never want to get another pop-up, you can disable it in your Control Panel - it's under "Edit Options."

Yeah - I was rather shocked this morning when I got up. I deleted everything that was on the board at the time, but then I had to leave and go to my mom's house. It appears that the spammers weren't finished after I left. Oh well - it's a shame that new members won't be able to post immediately after registering, but if that's the only way to control this kind of thing, then we gotta do what we gotta do.

Soda,
One thing that I did to circumvent unwanted SPAMBOTs on my little Hobby Fourm was to activate that Graphic Letter combination that users have to enter before a post is made. I set it up for a limited number of posts before automatically deactivating it. However, as soon as I confirm the requested new member, I boost their number of posts above the threshold where authentication by that graphic Alphabet entry is required. I forget what it's called.
Spammers can still get in, but they have to do their spamming manually, and reenter that code on every post. It at least defeats the Spambots that are out there.

I have that on registration - it's called a "captcha" I believe (sp?) - and it doesn't seem to slow them down. Ironically, I usually have to enter in those things twice, but the bots seem to have no trouble with them. :headshake:
What board software do you use, BTW?

SMF....Simple Machines Forum
http://www.simplemachines.org/
I wanted something pretty easy to set up since I'd never set up a forum before. I never expected it to "take off"...but it is a comfortable place to take a breath and .... well, I think you know from "what".
I liked it because I could set up different forums within the board. I have one for "Music" (everything, not just Walsh and Eagles), another for "GOLF" and yet another one for "Casinos". I think I have 18 members <LOL> and that's okay. More would be welcome but I'm benefiting two fold from it....the experience of setting it up and learning about the security issues and also in staying in touch with some of my closest friends.
You'd recognize several Soda.

Brooke - You can change to any style you want at any time. If you scroll all the way to the bottom of the board, you will see a drop-down box on the far left. If you click the arrow, it will display all the board styles. Just select the one you want and it will change instantly.

This is not a big problem but I thought you would want to know. Twice when I was moving between threads, I got a "crash" message. For all of the time I have spent on the site, tonight, Jan 20, 2009, the server seems to be unusually slow to respond.

Yeah - I have been having problems, too the last few days. It does seem to be a server problem because it sometimes affects Eagles Online Central (and the other sites) as well. However, I'm not sure it's related to the amount of traffic because it doesn't seem to matter how many people are online. Hopefully, Soda can get it resolved soon.

It's possible, if you have dial-up or a very slow connection. Is that the case?

THIS IS NOT A COMPLAINT- But I finally figured out why I'm having trouble getting The Border to load. I LOVE the new animated avatars but they take a LOT of time to load and then start to move. Until the motion starts, the thread does not completely load, I get a lot of little boxes with a red x in them. I figured it was just because I was on dial up but I took my laptop to the library today and The Border still loaded slow and then I noticed when the avatars started moving that it loaded faster. I love the new animated avatars but if people are having trouble with slowing loading this could be the reason.

I do notice the ani av problem, but mine is working soooooooooooooo much better today that it's nearly 100% better.
My ISP rep (internet service provider) was in this morning and said they had had some difficulties yesterday and weren't quite finished with repairs. So hopefully, that will solve all my problems.
AZ, I don't know how you can deal with dial up at all with all the pics posted here. I could never go back to that. I understand that high speed is not available to everyone though. My co-worker just lives about 3 miles from our office and she can't get DSL because she has a different ISP.

Regular pictures load pretty fast but I can't view videos (I get to impatient). They take about 30 minutes for a 4 minute video to load and then I can view it. We are suppose to get a new company in that will offer DSL. They are already in a small town near us. Superior only has 3038 people so there is not a lot of monay to be made here.

You have to upload the avatar yourself to a Photobucket account that you've created, then copy the URL of that image, paste it into the line on your avatar editor settings that says
Option 1 - Enter the URL to the Image on Another Website
Even though it helpfully offers http://www in the box, you can paste your URL right over that and disregard it. That's just to help people figure out where they need to put their URL.

I know that the link turns to blue when it works properly but no matter what combination I used I could not get the text I wanted to show up as a link. I just kept getting the link. I also don't understand whether the 'value' (the link) is supposed to be entered once or twice. The 'insert link' function doesn't allow you to change the link into text. So many of you do it, just type 'here' underlined and it links, but I can't.

When you enter the url you want to link to in the insert link box and hit ok it looks like this:

This shows up in your post as the link. To get the text you want to appear instead of the link
type the text you want here
and it should give you this:

I been havin' a bunch of trouble with my puter too. The one upstairs. The wireless connection to my network. Every time the phone rings, I lose network connectivity. Dang cordless phone is 2.4Gh and so is my Router!
If I didn't have 4 phones connected to that line, I'd just go buy a 5.6Gh phone system. Very frustrating because it takes around 5 minutes to reestablish the connection once I get whomever it is on the land line to hang the dang thing up!
AzEaglesFan
12-16-2010, 12:23 AM
Mike, I had the same trouble and it was because I had "Call Waiting" and it would disconnect my internet. I had to get rid of the call waiting and that took care of it. Don't know if that is your trouble or not.
MikeA
12-16-2010, 12:06 PM
Nah AZF, I've had call-waiting problems before but only back when I was using dial-up for Internet connections.
I'm DSL now. The problem is definitely the frequency of the cordless phones we have on one land line coming into the house. Both the phones and the wireless router are on the 2.4 GHz band and when the phone is in use, it scrambles the router signals with interference.
I have 5.8GHz cordless phones on another land line and have no issues when it is in use. I just need to freakin' destroy those cordless phones on 2.4GHz. If I'd known more about wireless routers when I bought mine, I'd have gotten a dual band router that worked on more than one frequency.
The problem is, I think even dual band routers work on both 2.4GHz and on 5.8GHz lines. That being the case, I should have bought phones that were on a completely different band. They make them now. Not cheap though. We have 4 phones on the 2.4GHz band and two cordless ones on the 5.8GHz band.
I'd be spending a fortune on phones to replace all 6 phone sets. Add to that our cell phones and you can see we are definitely not communicationaly challenged! <LOL>

Your cookies probably got cooked Brooke.
Just to play it safe, you might want to go check your browser security settings and make sure that the settings there haven't been changed by some unauthorized Bot. One of those settings is to save cookies and usually that is where your passwords are archived.

I have to keep filling in my log on info each time I try to enter the Border. Any suggestions?? I think that is the same trouble Brooke is having.

That's usually a cookie problem. Have you updated any software such as JavaScript recently, or cleared your cookies or cache?

I was having trouble and did a disk cleanup, that may be what happened. I seem to be back to normal now.

They're fine for me right now - is it better for you, too? Sometimes traffic varies in different areas.

Pages loading slowly can sometimes be due to a fault on your broadband rather than a board issue. I know our broadband hasn't been great over the last 6 months or so. Some pages (Whatever the site) are taking ages to load, particularly if more than one of us are online.

Did anyone else get an error message while trying to come here? I got a 503 Error Service Unavailable.

Yes, I did too.
Can't remember the exact time (or even a 'within an hour' estimate ) but probably between 5 and 7pm UK time.

If I remember right it was around 1 or 2AM Central time.... Right before I went to bed. I consider that morning, my hours are different than most.

It wouldn't surprise me. I wouldn't think it would be just my computer. I would think it would be down for everybody. But I'm not great with time zone conversions but it was around 2AM when I got that 503 error again.

Just a few minutes ago I was not able to access this site directly. I made 2 attempts. The error page gave the link for Eagles Online Central & suggested trying that. I was able to get on EOC & then get on The Border through the Message Board link.

Yeah - I got it too, AEF around the same time. Soda and I happened to be talking at the time, so she reported it again. Hopefully, it's fixed for good this time.
