Wow, HH! Thank you so much for posting the set list. Oh how I wish I had been there to see that!
3 encores? :thud:
I wonder if that version of THIO is what he was talking about in one of his recent interviews. Would love to hear his new version!

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
My God. I cannnot waiit. That is beyond anything I could have hoped for. Interesting that On The Way Home was not only played, but played as an encore. What an astounding, adventurous setlist.

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
This is VA, a better review to come, but for now we'll say OMG! What an amazing evening. He was so enthusiastic and genuinely thrilled to be there, and he had so much support from family and friends. The symphony added a whole other dimension to the performance. OMG. The symphony played on the first encore and TITTL is amazing with that kind of background. Talk at ya all tomorrow.

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
I just want to say, OMG it was freakin fabulous. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that man. He couldn't have worked the crowd any better and his band was beyond great.

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
I haven't seen any tour-date additions to his website, but the T-Shirts we bought read:
New York, Washington DC, Englewood, Bethlehem, Mashantucket, Los Angeles, San Jose and Saratoga so maybe GA's dream will come true and one of these two additional dates will fit her schedule!!
Just dropped VA at the train back to Virginia. Ouch. Think we got about 4 hour sleep -- but I'm SO NOT COMPLAINING. The concert was absolutely worth it.
-
Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
OH COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!! !!!!
Are San Jose and Saratoga near each other?
Will you pm me when you get a chance about t-shirts please?
-
Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
Wow, ladies! How did you manage to sleep at all!
Thanks for filling us in and the pics! Glenn looks fabulous, as usual! Can't wait to hear more!

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
I actually have to do some work this morning so this will be quick and I'll post more later. It was a fabulous concert. I keep going back to what Glenn has said in recent interviews, that if he could reach a small portion of the millions of Eagles fans and expose them to and turn them on to this "new" music then that'd be great. Well, mission accomplished. Even a cynical New York audience loved it. How could you not?
After Peaceful Easy Feeling, he spoke to the crowd and joked that this was the beginning of his East Coast Retirement Party.
He talked about After Hours being recently released and how fortunate he was to have members of the band with him tonight that played on the album. He also had some newer musicians playing -- Wade (didn't catch his last name) on Bass and background vocals from Anchorage, Alaska and Reggie Cooper on upright bass from Detroit -- where mother is half a word. Yep. He did the joke again. It's funny every time. It never gets old for me.
Hopefully VA got his name, but the saxophone player was unreal. His playing was smokey, smooth and hot (as was Glenn's voice).
The NYU Orchestra came in right after Route 66 and joined him for Sentimental Reasons. It was a cute moment because as they got settled (there seemed to be about 25 members) and prepared to play, Glenn said that one of his favorite sounds is the sound of an orchestra tuning.
I can't express enough how much the orchestra brought to the performance. They added so many "layers" to the music and gave a whole new dimension to the songs. I'm not doing it justice in my description, but they were outstanding.
Glenn talked about how the mid to late 60's was a great time in music and that Randy Newman was his favorite American singer/songwriter. He got a laugh from the crowd when he said that only Randy Newman could write a love song about a junkie and a hooker and then played Same Girl.
More later . . . .

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
Here’s a little more . . .
He introduced Caroline No as being written by another songwriter that he has great admiration for – Brian Wilson. Again, the orchestra added such depth to this song. He did the falsetto and he nailed it. I love the drum portion of this song too. He just kind of closes his eyes and goes with it – like he was truly enjoying that song in that moment.
I think the band intros came next – Will Hollis, Scott Crago, Percussion guy (forgive me I can’t remember his name) and Danny Grenier – who was phenomenal. He’s got a kind of mellow, laid-back vibe, but man can he play.
Glenn gave a special shout out to Michael Thompson and Richard Davis for their participation and contribution in producing After Hours. Glenn said that he found in working with them that the journey was the reward.
The Look Of Love came next and I remember thinking how well suited Glenn’s voice is for this song. He mentioned that they changed the key from the Dusty Springfield version.
I think this was where he compared the evening to the first time he played the Augusta National Golf Course. After 6 holes he realized "man, this is going too fast". I guess since this was about midpoint in the concert, he felt that the evening was also going by too fast. He then gave special shout outs in recognition and thanks to family and friends who were in attendance – Robert Rove?, Alex Gibney (mentioned the history of the Eagles dvd again) Phil Galston, Chris Berman (sportscaster), engineer Elliot Scheiner, Irving Azoff, his daughter Taylor and the “love of my life for the last 22 years” his wife, Cindy. He said something about how women would say to his wife how nice it must be for her to have Glenn singing to her around the house all the time. He jokingly said – Ah, yeah. I don’t do that.
Then they played a bluesey/country-ish version of Worried Minds.
He talked about his song writing partner Jack Tempchin as an intro to The One You Love which he played with the orchestra and it was breathtaking. Really fabulous.
more later . . .

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
Wow HH, this is like reading a good book! Chapter by chapter. You certainly remember a lot! I'm delighted that Glenn:heart: seems to have been enjoying himself so much on his debut night. I'm sure he (and you) would have wished it to last forever! Thanks for all the detailed information. I'm kinda hoping that if he gets good vibes from these first gigs he will announce more big plans for the summer.
Can't wait for the next bit........
-
Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
Yes HH, thanks so much for the bits and pieces you are remembering. It's building up to be a perfect evening!
-
Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
I'm all excited after reading the 1st 2 installments of your review, HH!! Anxiously awaiting more. So glad all of you that attended were treated to such a memorable performance & that Glenn was enjoying himself so much! I must have meant so much to him to have Taylor & Cindy there! It was sweet the way he introduced her.
-
Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
Sounds like Glenn put on quite the show...glad you ladies had fun...looks like you were quite close to the stage...great pics as usual....I'm sure the orchestra really added something special to the show...Also, he looked quite dapper I must say!

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
I'm back home and let me say, it was a fantastic trip! HH and her DH were amazing hosts and I enjoyed spending time with them (although I imagine HH is getting quite sick of me by now). Then, of course, the concert had a lot to do with it being a great trip.
The only negative thing about the entire trip was the ride from Union Station in DC to my house. I had Glenn's music playing and when Route 66 came on, I had to turn it off. I know he's singing about Route 66 and not Interstate 66, but as I sat in the left lane heading west and not motoring anywhere, I didn't see much to get any kicks about. It did remind me, though, how very fortunate I am to be able to work from home and not be out on 66 every day.
OK, some thoughts of things I remember in no particular order. Our man Mr. Frey has got it going on! What a great show. I already can't wait until Monday, although I think it'll be missing something without the orchestra.
HH mentioned that with it being the first show of this tour, it was obviously special to him. It very definitely was, but it was more than that IMO. During one of the encore songs, the audience was singing louder than during the other songs. In a venue like that he could hear it quite well. As we all applauded at the end, he had a look of awe on his face. He looked sincerely touched at the response. In the many concerts I've been to, I don't think I've ever experienced one where the performer and audience were so in tune and appreciative of each other.
The Look of Love melted my bones, I swear. I'm sure the look of fan love was all over my face. His voice is well suited to these kinds of songs and when you add the passion and emotion he brings to his songs it's a very potent combination.
He did give a shout out to those HH mentioned, but it was so sweet to hear him talk about Cindy, calling her the love of his life for 22 years. It was even sweeter to see the look on his face. He is so very obviously happy and it's wonderful and heartwarming to see.
IMO, The Shadow of Your Smile was a bit rough as he moved from the intro to the song. Then like someone flipped a switch, he nailed it. I'm pretty sure my mouth dropped open. Like with me, the people behind me had only ever heard Sinatra's version and they were very impressed with Glenn's performance of it.
Like he'd mentioned in an interview posted the other day, they did rearrange The Heat Is On to be more jazzy. As he explained it, as it had always been sung it didn't fit in with the tone of the evening. He was right. It wouldn't have matched the venue or the mood of the crowd. Of course, it helped that the arrangement was a good one!
On Monday, assuming I figure out how to turn off the flash on my phone camera, I'll try to take some pics and post to Facebook right away, for those who may want to see them real-time.
OK, I need to get outside, the sun is finally out and the grass isn't going to cut itself. I'll post more later!

Feel better, Soda. I'll have to finish the review tomorrow. Today was a busy workday after a late night last night. I don't want to rush and forget something important. Like how hot he looked.

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
OK, I wrote some notes while on the train using a tablet device and it's like reading Greek with the spelling errors and shortcuts! So first I want to apologize for texting HH and leading her astray. THERE WERE ONLY TWO ENCORES. Not three. Oops.
Soda and TBF, I want to mention that the guy playing steel guitar, forget his name, but I do remember he's from West Layfayette, IN. Since my sister lived there for many years, it stuck in my head. And also because Lyin' Eyes had plenty of steel guitar. Plenty. Fortunately for me, I love steel guitars.
HH mentioned Phil Galdston being there. He's the songwriter-in-residence (apparently an official title) and the one who 'interviewed' Glenn during the Master Session at NYU last October. She also mentioned Chris Berman being there. It was his birthday, so happy belated birthday, Boomer!
On Worried Minds, Glenn played the acoustic guitar. It was with the symphony, but like on the CD, it's the steel guitar that's most prominent. My father is gonna love this song when I make him listen to it this weekend when I go to Somerset.
One You Love was totally awesome with the orchestra. I think I've read reviews here or elsewhere of him struggling with this one in the past, but last night he totally nailed it from the first word. With the sax and orchestra...just amazing.
Before he played After Hours he said the same story that's in an interview on here about calling Jack and asking about writing a 'standard' and Jack reminding him of After Hours. He talked about how it was to have been included in The Allnighter, but that it was too out of character. They all did a great job with After Hours.
At this point the orchestra left and he explained about the rearrangement of THIO. People clapped along with the beat of the song and seemed to like it. Same with Smugglers Blues. After SB, he said something like 'decades of personal research went into that one'.
The crowd really seemed to get into Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed and You Belong To The City. He didn't do the falsetto on YBTTC.
The first encore was with the symphony and it was Take It To The Limit and Desperado. I'll say it again, TITTL with strings sounded amazing. He did a great job with Desperado, too.
The second encore he came out and talked about how he wants the Eagles to do a CD of songs made popular by bands before them, their influences. He referred to the Eagles as 'settlers' and said 'pioneers' came before them. If he could talk them into doing it, the next song was one he wants to do. Easy to see why, he does a great job with it. A great job. Perhaps better than Richie Furay. When the song was over, he talked about Neil Young, Buffalo Springfield, and Richie Furay and said that Neil Young was one of his all time favorites. I wanted to ask 'favorite what?' Singer? Songwriter? Performer?
For the record, the symphony sat in the back, behind the band.
Glenn Frey is a very, very talented man.

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
Thanks for that.
Did he play piano for After Hours & just sing for Desperado?

He did not play piano and yes, he just sang for Desperado. For Desperado he gestured to the crowd to sing the harmony/backgrounds on the repeat of 'you better let someone love you'. And we did!

Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
It occurred to me that there is a significant omission from this setlist - Heartache Tonight.
-
Re: May 9th Town Hall NYC
I would assume (because I obviously don't know) that it didn't fit the 'mood'. Plus the time factor. He went over 90 minutes last night. Almost an hour and forty-five minutes, and the 'breaks' between encores were very brief.

I had that thought too, FP! He had said in one of the interviews that he would do it, however, as with the original arrangement of THIO, he may have thought that it didn't fit with this setlist. I know that he did it in Niagara Falls (and he rocked it) and sang songs from 'After Hours" in those shows too, but maybe with the release of the album and the inclusion of more AF songs, the feel of the show was different as VA indicated, and it just wasn't suited to this show.
