Re: Discussion of Eagles Documentary "History of the Eagles"
Something I forgot to mention earlier was the footage from the studio during the Long Run sessions.
It feels like you're watching the band mime to the released take of the title track, but then the band grind to a halt, and you realise you were actually listening to them playing it live.
For some reason I had in my mind that that album was assembled instrument-by-instrument, but the title track at least was predominantly a live band performance.

Also it's awesome watching Henley play drums in the concert DVD, especially the fills in "New Kid in Town".

Bah :censored: Humbug!
No disc!
I know one thing - I'll never use Amazon again for preorders.

Thoughts on the doc (from when I watched it on Showtime):
I agree Glenn and Don were very good at telling what happened, only problem I had was the Felder reenactment but I've already talked about that. But I think all in all they were pretty fairly truthful (perhaps even too honest and blunt at times), and it was a pretty accurate description of what they talked about. I'd love to know what never left post-production as DH has said things were left out of the release but we'll never know...
The only thing is that I wish there was more Long Run footage either on a disc or in the doc itself. The studio video on the title track is pretty darn clear and I'd love to have access to that in HD as I've always loved that video. That said the video on ICTYW is pretty low quality.
I'm all for them putting out all that they have, especially in that quality. I'd pay for a big bundle of DVDs of concert footage in a heartbeat. I savor the "old" Eagles, and seeing that would put me over the moon. I think just seeing the bonus disc whenever I get my DVD will do just that.... That is my favorite era afterall.

Thank you so much for the articles VA!!! They are too awesome!!! I need to see that concert footage here soon!!!!
Re: Discussion of Eagles Documentary "History of the Eagles"
Remember, that footage of Tryin' and Get You In The Mood is from Boyd Elder's art opening in Venice

My copy of the 3-DVD set (no Blu-ray with bonus disc available in Europe :-() arrived on Monday, and I finished watching it last night.
Some comments in no particular order...
The package is really nice. Classy.
The documentary itself is fantastic. There's as much depth as you could hope to have packed into a couple of DVDs. It's nice that when they discuss a song or an incident, they have the audio or footage to back it up.
Some of the 70s footage is incredible. Just release it all!
High spots for me, that I can remember...
The clip from the Rolling Stones support slots with Bernie, Don AND Joe. I didn't know they'd appeared on stage together prior to Bernie's departure, which was interesting.
The footage from the early days in Aspen is amazing. I never thought I'd see anything from that period. Also the Linda Ronstadt stuff. I'd love to see the whole show.
I like the way disagreements (Felder / everyone, Azoff / Geffen) are out in the open, and not swept under the rug.
I'm also amazed, given that he's executive producer, that Glenn allows himself to be shown in such a bad light. I'm not suggesting Felder is blameless, but I can imagine Frey having fun rubbing people up the wrong way.
Anyway - the BIG highlights for me...
The warmth shown to Bernie and Randy. Nice to see them get the recognition they deserve.
The 1977 bonus disc.. I wasn't prepared for the video and audio to be so good. They're a hell of a band now, but back then, before the 'Vegas' big-band days, they were incredible. I wish I could have seen them.
And finally... Randy.
I've held the man in legendary regard for most of my 40-ish years - he inspired me to play the bass. But despite that, I've never had the opportunity to see him play, or even speak. The DVD puts that to rest. Take it to the Limit rendered me speechless. What a star the guy is.
I was wondering if Glenn had an executive producer credit again.
I don't want to bring this up again, especially as I haven't seen it, but I must say something about the number of people who didn't like seeing Glenn demonstrate how he did his job. That is not 'allowing himself to be shown in a bad light' but so what if it does (to some people) & full credit to him. I honestly think that if Glenn 'rubbed people up the wrong way' it was because they gave him cause to do so. He wanted no passengers in the band. He did not & still does not suffer fools gladly. If people wanted this all to be sweetness & light, and not have this stuff discussed, they should not have watched it. I would rather see Glenn as he is (and he isn't perfect) than some sanitised image. I would rather see him tell it as it was.
If people don't like Glenn or they dislike him now because they have seen this, I can only say they didn't know much about him before they saw it. They didn't like what they saw. Fair enough. At least for the most part people here have been polite about their dislike for him; elsewhere he has been called everything under the sun by people who apparently think it's OK to abuse someone they've never met. The people who like him will continue to like him & we don't ask that everyone else should.
Re: Discussion of Eagles Documentary "History of the Eagles"
Since I've since come down to earth after watching the film last night, here are a few more thoughts....(in no specific order)
-Glenn and his running his fingers through his long hair in all the scenes of him as a younger dude. It got to the point where I was yelling at the screen "Just grow your hair back out, dammit!" :nahnah: Yes, there was a lot of tongue wagging going on from me.
-Randy............If I had any inkling at how fine he was back in the day....my Lord, what a fine looking man! Wow! I know that his health hasn't been good but he still has it and came across really well onscreen.
-Bernie, also kinda hot. I'm not into bald men too much but my Lord. Looking good and also came across well.
-JD...mmm mmm mmm. I watch 'Nashville' all the time and he's been in that a lot, making him the man I like the best on that show. He's really very sexy.
-I agree that Jackson Browne is aging very well.
-Don...always hot.
-And Joe....lord have mercy! Could not take my eyes off of him for one minute. He has always riveted me anyway. He came across very well. (He always does in my book, so I'm partial to him that way.)
-I'd heard a lot of bad and good about this but when I watched, I kept an open mind and ended up enjoying this so much more than I could have possibly thought I would. It was a very well done, well thought out film. The people that produced and directed this deserve some type of award. Seriously. This film gave me what I wanted to know about this band and so much more. I went into this not knowing a whole bunch about these guys and after watching it, I not only feel like I know them better but have also become even more of a fan of theirs.
-Along with that, I'd seen the Jeff Lynne film 'Mr. Blue Sky' and I had thought that his film would be like this one, i.e. chronological events and inclusion of past members of ELO. Nope. Don't get me wrong, I love Jeff Lynne and have for years but his film does not even come close to the Eagles film. If anything, I think that the people that did his film should have watched 'The History of the Eagles' to get a fix on the way a music doc should be done.
-I am so happy to have found this Eagles community as well as others because it gives me a place to talk about all this. Not a lot of my friends like the Eagles, although a lot of them do like Joe Walsh. (Thankfully.)
-I had seen the Jerry McGuire movie in the 90's and thought it sucked. But now that I know Glenn was in it, I might rent it again just to see him. I also found that episode of Miami Vice on Youtube with Glenn in it and loved it.
Sorry to be so random with my observations but I was so ramped up after watching that last night that I could not settle down and think a clear thought. I also could not get to sleep at all. (I'm sure I'm not the only one that had these issues.)
-And one more thought, despite the ill will between Felder and Glenn, I'm glad that Felder had a chance to be part of this film. I'm also glad that Randy and Bernie weren't shut out of the action either.
