As other folks have mentioned there are so many things to pick up the more times you watch it!
My most recent thoughts have been around the relationship between Don and Glenn. What is it really like? What got me thinking about it was when Glenn, towards the end of the doc says something like that he and Don could be partners again. ( I think this was in the context of their resumption as band) I had just never caught that until well- recently -
I know they have said they are friends but there does not seem to be a lot written about what they are like together- They seem to be very different people and that could be what makes them work- They have lived together and not lived together-and basically have grown up and older together over a long span of life. Did they recognize early on in their lives that what they had together was really extraordinary? And of course there was their break during the 80's where they did their own things. I am not sure if we will ever know but lately it has got me wondering- So lately I have been watching the doc trying to see if there are more "clues' about them
Who knows what will strike me next time I watch!!
What he says is that he's proud to have been the leader of the Eagles & proud to have been Don's partner. There is hardly anything else about the way the two of them relate to each other. The decay in their relationship during the Long Run period was glossed over. Hardly anything else was said. This disappointed me, I have to admit, because it is the most interesting thing about the Eagles to me; their dynamic (well, second most interesting after how Glenn dealt with the leadership).
Re: Discussion of Eagles Documentary "History of the Eagles"
Its interesting that the baby of the group is the leader. I can think of another group that is a favorite of mine where the youngest of the group is the leader that makes all the decision for the group, but he has no partner.
But IMO. He's a great leader.
I agree FP. I would had love to learn more about Glenn and Don's partnership and the dynamics they have together. If it wasn't for those two finally writing together for the second album, what would happen. How would it be like then and even now.
Re: Discussion of Eagles Documentary "History of the Eagles"
When Glenn discusses the part when he and Don wanted to start their own band, the way he says it reminds me of two people in love. Lol! "Well, I really just want to be in a band with you", and "I really just want to be in a band with you, too". It's just the way he says it.

When you think about it, it does seem like that.
I've been thinking about this. I've been doing the what if game.
What if Glenn's mother didn't find him in that basement. Would Glenn still be in the band with Bob Seger and later become a solo artist instead of forming the Eagles.
What if Glenn didn't follow his girlfriend to California.
What if Don didn't bump into Kenny Rogers and asked him to see his band play at a club. Would Don had gone to California later on or would had still move to California.
What if Don and Glenn didn't meet that one day and also didn't play in Linda Ronstadt's band at the same time.
There are so many events that could had prevent Don and Glenn to not meet.
I wonder if Glenn asked JD Souther to join the Eagles when they first started. I always wanted about that. Glenn picked two guys he never met before and asked to join the band.

He had met Bernie & Randy when the four of them backed Linda Ronstadt at a show at Disneyland & he would have known of their reputations. J.D.Souther was briefly considered but I imagine they would have decided Bernie was a superior all round musician.
Glenn was asked to join Ronstadt's band & then he recruited Don so it is not just happenstance that they were both in her band.
Re: Discussion of Eagles Documentary "History of the Eagles"
Hmm Frey/Henley as a duo. I wonder if that would had worked. I don't think so in the 70s. Maybe the 80s.

I don't believe they ever considered being a duo. Remember Glenn always wanted to be in a rock band. He had been in a duo with Souther which had failed.
As for the 80s they both had their solo careers & reuniting at that stage probably would not have worked for them, certainly not as a duo.
Re: Discussion of Eagles Documentary "History of the Eagles"
I didn't know that. The way Linda was saying that Glenn never met Bernie and Randy and she recommend those two.
True. FP. I think I said it wrong. What if Don and Glenn never met. Would Don had still been in Linda's band. Don said in the documentary that Glenn introduce him to John Boylan and he auction for him. It still goes back to what if Don didn't come to California with his band Shiloh. Linda would had never heard Don play or sing at the Troubadour. So probably Glenn and Don would met still had met, but in Linda's band.
Re: Discussion of Eagles Documentary "History of the Eagles"
Bernie had seen Longbranch Pennywhistle (I think they opened for The Flying Burrito Brothers) and he'd heard of Don from someone who'd left Shiloh for The Flying Burrito Bros. Glenn and Randy had already met. Glenn had seen Randy in Poco and Randy had seen Glenn in Longbranch Pennywhistle.
The "what if" I've wondered about was the band that Glenn, JD and Jackson Browne considered putting together.
