Re: Henley Heaven: The Don Henley Photo Thread
I still can't figure out why anyone thought it was a good idea to release Johnny Can't Read as a single. And then, to add insult to injury, they chose the beautiful Long Way Home as the 'B' side. Inexplicable to me!  :headscratch:
Re: Henley Heaven: The Don Henley Photo Thread
I can totally see Don wanting it as a single because he was really coming into his own as a social commentator and satirist, especially given how well "Dirty Laundry" did on that front. I was always sad "You Better Hang Up" didn't do better, I love that song. But with b-sides, there was always the chance they would get greater exposure so it meant they were carefully chosen too.
Re: Henley Heaven: The Don Henley Photo Thread
Well, Luna - Regarding Johnny Can't Read, you are, obviously, correct here since this is what happened. What I find baffling is that the song was apparently viewed as being close to the same caliber of work as Dirty Laundry since it was indeed chosen as a single. On this point, I guess I have the public on my side.
Re: Henley Heaven: The Don Henley Photo Thread
What I mean is that I think Don certainly believed both songs were of the same calibre but he was wrong in believing it would also be a hit single. It's interesting, though, that "Dirty Laundry" isn't - stylistically speaking - indicative of what people would expect from him either, but it's so incredibly compelling in every way.

I also had an Apple IIe by 1983.
I know it's not the best song in the world but the video is a wonderful reminder of high school. I had a near obsession with Mtv and any video by any artist that I liked. It's amusing to me to see how hokey some of those old videos were. Hindsight really is 20/20. Thanks for the link soda!
