And by the way, the contract for HFO that Felder signed under the "duress" of Glenn's admittedly rudely-framed ultimatum earned Felder MILLIONS AND MILLIONS AND MILLIONS OF DOLLARS for doing what he loved. I'm supposed to feel sorry for him?! I'm supposed to find that to be a horrible deal? I want that kind of horrible deal, please!
That's the thing, though. For Felder, it didn't matter that he was filthy rich. It only mattered that he wasn't as rich as Glenn and Don Henley.
The only thing for Henley & Frey was that THEY MAKE MILLIONS MORE than the others. They had a contract & then they wanted to change it & pay him less. Do I feel sorry for him? Well, he got fired, so yeah, I guess I do, but there must have been some validity to his lawsuit since he was awarded millions more. Judges don't hand over millions of dollars for no reason.
I guess the richer you are....the uglier it gets.
It went down the way it went down, nothing is going to change the past.
I do have to agree that I guess most bands end up with power struggles & money fights, so they are no different than anyone else.
I guess what I was upset about was the way Glenn spoke about it.

You know, I was thinking along this line also, more specifically I wonder if part if it was he just wanted to be an Eagle. KWIM? After seeing him get choked up, I think he genuinely missed it & it hurt him they dismissed him so easily. But again, I haven't read his book.

They couldn't just 'churn out' those other songs you blithely dismiss out of hand. Those songs are masterpieces too, in their own QUIET way (particularly the underrated Tequila Sunrise). Just because a song was a huge hit & is the only one some people ever seem to talk about doesn't mean that the band's entire oeuvre should just be dismissed as inferior to that song. Neither should it mean that the contributions to the band of an ex-member should be wildly infd into a status that he frankly does not deserve.
The comparison HC = Bohemian Rhapsody & Lyin' Eyes = Crazy Little Thing Called Love is not in my opinion relevant. Yes, HC & BR are 'masterpieces'. The other two songs are also extremely powerful & memorable (particularly Lyin' Eyes, which, by the way, I do happen to think is a 'masterpiece'). Why do you have to put the allegedly 'inferior' songs down?
As for Topkat's statement about one member being more important than another only happening in Eagleland, perhaps she should look at the careers of Creedence Clearwater Revial & my beloved Dire Straits. You want a one man band? I've given you two.
I totally agree here!
Re: Eagles Documentary DVD
OK Im about to post the exclusive photos I took of the Eagles in 1994 at the Giants stadium show. Going to post in a seperate thread.

The point was made that it was Felder's original riffs or guitar work that STARTED the process of the song, that Henley & Frey picked up on and worked the rest of the song...Therefore he is responsible for the song from the beginning. Without THAT there would be no Hotel California.
Now, I agree that Tequila Sunrise is a good song, & the Eagles have MANY good & great songs, but they are not masterpieces. The point is that most people are not familiar with it. What is a masterpiece in a QUIET way??? What does that mean??? There are loads of great songs out there.
Hotel California is an ICONIC SONG & is the ONE song most identified with the Eagles. It brought the Eagles to an entire new level of fame & therefore MONEY, which is what this is really all about. So, Felders role is important, though I don't inflate his importance over the others, it is just as important, to me anyway, & obviously to other people as well.

I didnt put those songs down, I said I LOVE THOSE SONGS, I said they are GREAT songs. But they are not the masterpiece that Hotel California is which is widely recognized as one of the Top Rock songs of all time. 'Thats not putting it down, thats simply stating a fact.

The other songs aren't masterpieces in your opinion.
By 'in a quiet way' I meant it doesn't have to be loud & brash to draw attention to itself. It has an emotional impact on me at least that Hotel California for all its impressive sound does not. I know how 'iconic' Hotel California' is. I just don't see why it has to always be inflated above everything else as if nothing else matters.
A song can be a masterpiece even if 'many people are not familiar with it'. I can give you a very long list of songs which I think are masterpieces even if you have never heard them.

Maybe the word UNIQUE in addition to Masterpiece helps explain what we are saying. As good as Lyin Eyes, Take it easy etc are GREAT SONGS...musically they are not unique. Hotel California is. Its an epic song that stands out from not only the rest of their work but mostly everyone elses work. Again nobody is saying that the other songs arent awesome...they are. But you have to understand that withou Hotel California the Eagles would not have ALL the status it has today. Thats how important that song was.
Re: Eagles Documentary DVD
I'm a little younger and I came into the fandom late so I wasn't inundated with HC in the 70s or culturally influenced to consider it the definitive Eagles song. I heard it alongside all the other Eagles songs via HFO and the Greatest Hits so to me, it was just another one of their hits. I never thought it was that epic. I was drawn to "Take It to the Limit" much more. It has an emotional intensity that HC's rather abstract imagery does not, IMHO.
The song is definitely iconic culturally, but you can't insist that everyone MUST acknowledge it's the best Eagles song EVAH! Such value judgments are subjective, and not everyone feels that way. That doesn't mean they're crazy. It means they like different things.
Imagine that!
