Re: Joe Walsh Greatest Hits Survivor!
I don't feel right for voting for either of them since I haven't been in this contest. Both are signature songs.
But if I had my druthers, I'd druther see
"Smoke On The Water"
win the contest (inside joke). Joe said he used to have people asking him to play his "Hit" "Smoke On the Water". I think it might have been long after Joe left the James Gang for his solo endeavors and was probably after Bolin left the Gang for Deep Purple. I think I recall Joe saying that he'd play "Smoke" if they paid him enough. <LOL>
Re: Joe Walsh Greatest Hits Survivor!
Feel free to cast a vote anyway, Mike. You don't have to have played all the rounds to participate. I'm interested to see your verdict!
(lol at the "smoke" story)
Re: Joe Walsh Greatest Hits Survivor!
In that case, I'd have to vote "Funk #49" to take it all. I like LBG but of the two, Funk is a more complex instrumental piece showing Joe's mastery of the guitar. That opening riff has to be one of the most recognizable licks of all times! It's right there with the Spanish arpeggio in Hotel California or that minor "Apache" opening riff in Witchy Woman.
LBG has some very pertinent lyrics but, I don't consider it the best work he's done though it probably is more popular to the general public, expecially after all the things he's done with in in concerts over the past 8 or 10 years.
Had I been involved in this earlier, I'd have gone with what I think is Joe's opus: "The Confessor" or maybe "The Bomber." That song (Confessor) has more deep rooted meaning than any other that he had composed and in addition, has some ungodly guitar work.
Re: Joe Walsh Greatest Hits Survivor!
This is very hard. I love both songs. However I can't help but feel that Funk #49 has lasted a bit better and has wider appeal. (Mike, as you seem so knowledgeable about Joe's songs, could you explain the title? Or anyone?)
I vote for Funk #49 to win.

I vote for Funk #49 to win.
Sure, I can explain it. Very simple. They already had "Funk #48". It was released on "Yer Album" <LOL>
Joe joked that if he had stayed with the James Gang, they would probably be up to Funk #2973 or something like that by now.
With the state of Joe's mind back in the late 60's and 70's....well, you'd have had to be there to understand it. Remember "Smoker You Drink, the Player You Get?" It made perfect sense to me at the time, but for the life of me now, I can't understand it! I recall it having something to do with the fragrance of Purple.
Re: Joe Walsh Greatest Hits Survivor!
I have to vote for Life's Been Good for the win... simply because its a fun song and I have always appreciated its irony and sense of humor.
Re: Joe Walsh Greatest Hits Survivor!
I'm voting Funk #49 to win. Between it and LBG I would have to say that it appeals to me more-I find it more interesting musically.
Re: Joe Walsh Greatest Hits Survivor!
Sorry I've missed the last couple of rounds. Although Funk#49 may be more interesting musically, Life's Been Good is such a keynote song for Joe and the Eagles, especially on the Live album, that I have to cast my vote for Life's Been Good for the win!!!
Re: Joe Walsh Greatest Hits Survivor!
Oh crap - can someone help me out here. I can't remember which song I wanted to vote for. Guess I'll have to flip a coin!
