Oh my lord, we're going to have to address him as Dr. Jonny before too long!
Congrats Jonny!!! :D
Well done JCL! Delighted to hear of your academic success. SH, great to hear from you too. Its been a while! And DJ, I hope things go well with you and your family - you certainly have a busy summer planned
Wow, JCL! You're so ambitious! Enjoy your summer and hope you have lots of fun before you pursue your Ph.D. Are you planning on being a professor or do research along with teaching, if you don't mind me asking? Also, I know you've been on here lately, but I'd like to welcome you back after your lengthy absence. Welcome, JCL!
SweetHolly, congrats on your anniversary!
DJ, hope everything pans out well! Congrats to your daughter getting married soon as well as to your son getting his degree in the fall! Hope he recovers quickly after the braces and surgery. Ooh, the kidney infections must have been so painful, but good thing that you're getting it taken care of!
Thanks everyone for ! Thanks also to Rudie for the welcome back (out of curiosity, how are your own studies going? Or have you finished now?) To answer your question, the research side appeals to me more than teaching so I'd prefer to focus on that rather than lecturing, although I wouldn't completely rule that out at this stage - it's still some way off.
One thing I definitely wouldn't worry about is me enjoying the summer - I've been finding plenty of ways to amuse myself (the weather has even been quite nice for the most part, which is unusual!).
JCL - Wow ! Congratulations ! And best of luck on working towards your PhD.
Your resume sure sounds impressive ! Just wondering, what college did you attend for your Masters and do you plan on continuing at that school for your PhD?
DJ - Best wishes for successful surgery for your son, and good luck on your daughter's wedding. Glad you are feeling better. One of my nephews was married a couple of months ago and I spent a fortune for the dress, shoes, hotel, etc. But, it was a beautiful wedding and so worth it.
Hi how is everyone doing?
This is my latest thing I made.

Don't worry I got some Eagles stuff coming up soon
JCL, I'm anxious and nervous about transferring to UC Berkeley next month for economics. I'm not guaranteed my major, so I need to get at least a 2.7 in my 2 pre-reqs. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't done on a Bell Curve for the stats class, but I will find a way to get through it. I doubt myself a lot, but it usually turns out well. I like to be pleasantly surprised.
If you do end up teaching in the future, that would be pretty cool. I'm glad that your summer is going pretty well.
Thanks! I've been at Nottingham University for the last four years. I enjoyed my time there (I really liked the campus environment) and I did consider staying but for my PhD I've decided to go to Liverpool, partly because it's closer to home but also because they have had a lot of investment in Chemistry and the other Sciences recently so it's very strong in my field.
Really good luck RCF, here's hoping the pre-reqs go well.
Not just a first (and a masters) but one at a good university!
I bumped into an old friend recently and learned that her elder son is hoping to start a Physics PhD at Liverpool in September (subject to getting at least a 2i so he can get funded). He's just finished an MSc degree at Bristol. My own son, decided to stick with a BEng (in Computing), as he wanted to get out into the real world but many of his friends stayed on for the fourth year.
I hadn't realised that four year degrees were so common. Back in my day, almost all degree courses were just three years but my guess is that's because of how they were funded - when the state was paying the fees and even maintenance grants, there would have been little support for longer courses.
I'm assuming that with a first, you'll have no trouble getting Research Council funding of whatever PhD you choose.
Johnny - Good Luck and best wishes ! The land of the Beatles !
UTW - Interesting as all college degrees here are at least four years. Engineering and Pharmacy are five year degrees. At least at the colleges I know of. I went to Rutgers and both of those majors are five years. I do not think a three year degree exists here. However, you can go summers and graduate early in three years. I had some friends who did this and than went on to grad school or law school.
Rudie - Good Luck ! I am sure everything will work out. UCB is such a great school. You should feel proud just for being accepted. I am sure a degree from there will go far as you enter the job market after you graduate. Schools like UCB look great on the resume and most certainly get you through the door in a job search.
In Ireland most degree courses are 3 or 4 years long. I did an honours Science degree which was 4 years. But many people in Arts disciplines did 3 year degrees. They work you hard though!! I remember a friend if my sisters did a 3 year honours degree in Ireland. She wanted to transfer to a Masters programme in the USA but was told that with a 3 year degree she 'wouldn't be up for it'. They insisted she did a one year conversion course to get her 'up to standard'. The work she had to do on the conversion course was work she had already done to a higher level in her primary degree!!!
Scotland has had four year degrees for as long as I can remember, but that's because scottish students spend a year less in high school. However some courses will allow students from England or Wales to go straight into the second year if they have suitable A-levels.
I did a three year science degree and we were worked pretty hard compared to the arts students that I knew.
Thing with science though is that practicals count towards the end of year exam results so we could go into each exam with up to 40% done, whereas our Arts equivalents had to do 100 % of their course assessment as exams!!
Hope everyone is doing well. Been far too long since I posted or read in here. So I won't pretend to know what I've missed but well wishes to all and hope all is well.
Things are ok here. Had some various small worries lately but I'd like to think I'm getting towards the end with that. My health is about as stable as it's ever been, and I'm doing pretty good all in all. So I can't, shouldn't, and won't complain.
I leave for Current River on Thursday, I love small trips like that, nothing fancy but enough to restore my sanity. I love floating and boating on the river.
Thank you, NKIT. I'm in the acceptance and hope stage of grief over the stress. Reading the Facebook group page for the transfers on my news feed makes me feel better because they're freaking out more than me or have more concerns and questions. I don't know what to worry about yet other than the unknown.
I'm kind of behind here too, but hope everyone is doing well.
Austin, have fun floating! I would love to do that again sometime. Shoot, it's probably been 20 years since I've been! Hmmmm
Rudi, best of luck to you! I'm sure you'll do fine!
Got a job interview today at my Universities Book Store.
Good luck, trav!
Austin, that river trip sounds wonderful. Will you be camping as well?
Austin - That river trip sounds fun. Hope you have a great time and good weather. I've found even a couple of days away does wonders. I have to confess, I don't like sleeping in tents either. My idea of camping is to rent a cabin in the woods on or near a lake.
BTW - My nephew lives in Carbondale(sp) - is that near you ? He is originally from the Chicago subs but moved there for grad school and has stayed down there. He is a big fisherman.
TM - Good luck !
I start College the 28th move in the 26tj
TM - Good Luck and enjoy the first year !
PS - What school are you attending again ? Sorry I forgot.
I am attending the University of Hartford
I got the Job 8)
Congratulations!
A university place and a job in the bookshop, so the next question has to be, what are you studying?
I am starting at their 2 year program which is just a General Education program with a Buisness concentration. After that I am going into Mechanical Engineering with an Acoustics Concentration. I want to build and design Guitar Amps and Speakers for a career
Congrats TM2!!! :D
I'm getting ready to go back to school and this will be the first time I've actually had to go up to campus to take a class in a long time since I did most of mine online. At least it'll be only on Thursdays since it's a hybrid class (one day a week on campus the rest online). This should hopefully be my final year finally since after this I only have my internship and the final capstone class for my admin assistant major.
Also I got a Office Specialist certificate from my school that shows I'm proficient in all of Microsoft Office's software programs and should be receiving it in the mail any day now. It should also help for future job apps too. :)
TM & Buffy - Good luck in school this year.
TM - Congrads on the job, now hit those books !
Buffy - Not too much longer before you are done. Any idea where you hope to do your internship?
NKIT, thanks!!! :D Not yet. Have been looking for job postings but do know the college is supposed to help me out when I sign up for it in October then I should start it in January.
Good luck to everyone starting new courses in college this year. Hope it all goes well for you all.
I have had dreadful wifi problems the last month or so which has made it very difficult to post here, but we changed provider today and are reaping the benefit immediately.
Congrats tm2 and Buffy! Good luck with school this year!
I moved into Berkeley this past Monday for an 8 day orientation, and it has been absolute torture at times. It wouldn't be so bad if activities ended at 8 or 9 pm, but they end at 10 or 11 pm. It's also pretty much nonstop, so I just ditched an optional rally that went from 9:30 to 11 pm.
We did this and it was really cold. My hands went numb. It took 2-3 hours, and I felt really bad for cars that were passing by near the football stadium.

I know that I shouldn't be complaining, but man, it's draining.
On the bright side, it's really cool to meet new people in a mostly stress-free time. Also, I got into the stat class I was waitlisting for, and I know other transfers that are taking it too. I'll probably drop the one I'm in and just do that.
Rudy - So happy for you ! You will not regret it ! This will open so may doors for you when you graduate.
Best of luck to everyone starting school/college with wishes for great/ successful semester.
Thanks.
I just finished mixing this hope you enjoy. My first day of work is tommorow from 9/2

I'm getting adjusted to starting the new semester too although for a teacher, it's a bit different!
I have a question for you guys:
There's someone on Facebook who I talk to occasionally on there, but I am not really close to.
Lately, she's been posting photos of herself where's she talking about dieting and exercising and she's clearly gone way too far. She looks gaunt.
Is it my place to say anything when I've so rarely talked to her?
Soda - I think you should talk to her. From experience I doubt she will listen.
I bet she has had other people try to talk to her too.
Good luck this semester - what classes are you teaching this semester ?
My one sister is an English teacher and taught for a year or two at a local county college. She then went back to teaching HS. Like the HS kids better.
Good luck to everyone starting new courses this year whether students, teachers or lecturers. We start back on Thursday. My classes are now all science - they have evolved from being all Maths only a few short years ago!!
GA - Good luck ! Do you teach HS or college.
(I have two sister who are HS teachers - one English the other Science).
