(I have two sister who are HS teachers - one English the other Science).
Its called Secondary School here - Age 12 - 17/18, so I guess it would be equivalent to High School in the USA. There are two 'serious' sets of certificate exams that you work towards, the Junior Certificate after 3 years and (more importantly) the Leaving Certificate when you finish. Its the results of the Leaving that are used to determine if you get a place in University/College afterwards.

I have a question for you guys:
There's someone on Facebook who I talk to occasionally on there, but I am not really close to.
Lately, she's been posting photos of herself where's she talking about dieting and exercising and she's clearly gone way too far. She looks gaunt.
Is it my place to say anything when I've so rarely talked to her?
Me, I wouldn't if I were in your shoes just because I hate conflict. I really don't want to upset someone, even out of a caring place. To me it still feels like judging, as someone who's experienced comments from friends. For me personally, because of my history with bullying and also a fair bit of bullheadedness, all criticism is bad criticism and some advice I see as criticism. I'm a very sensitive person in that way. So I probably wouldn't respond well. I wouldn't be upset with you openly, but it would be something I'd stew over. That's just me and my personality. I don't handle what I define as criticism well.
However, I also understand the feeling of watching someone do something bad for themselves, and wanting to help him in some way and feeling guilty for not doing something if things would turn bad. In that case, yes it is justified I think.
I definitely think it is up to you ulimately, but if it was someone I didn't know well, I really would feel uncomfortable doing so. It just makes me nervous.
Because I myself have had my fair share of people who barely know me telling me what I should be doing or not doing or discounting my disabilities (which they see as excuses) and it really throws a wrench in my head and puts me into orbit. And I know how I get about it. So in all fairness, I would never do something to cause someone else that combo of anger/sadness, even though most wouldn't react like I do. But the potential is there. Because I can't be alone in that, IMO.

That's tough. She'll almost certainly be defensive I would think. She might not be able to get that you're concerned, and not judging her.
Gah. But it would feel awful to say nothing, as if you don't care. Sorry, I'm of no help. Hopefully someone wise will have the answer. Could you ask her a general well-being question, and not go directly to the dieting issue?

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
I graduated from university this summer and today I have moved into a new flat, alone, in a town miles from home that I have no connection to at all. I start a new job next month and the combination of all of this has made me think I have finally grown up  I have no idea if I am excited, nervous, getting old before my time or something else altogether!
Hope the rest of you are well. I have been about on here of late but I don't think I post anywhere near as much, so sorry if I have missed anything!

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
tlr, best of luck in this new chapter in your life!
I had a long weekend with girlfriends in Branson. We had a fantastic time! Friday evening we went to the Pierce Arrow show where my husband's cousin performs. Great show! We have listened to him sing since he was about 3 years old and he's so good! If you ever get to Branson, look up this show!
Saturday we went downtown to the historic district and did a bit of shopping, then went out on the Branson Bell Showboat for a dinner and show cruise. Great fun, lovely evening and dinner and great show!
Sunday morning we visited the Top of the Rock which is a golf complex designed by Arnold Palmer and situated on top of an Ozark mountain. The owner of Bass Pro Shops built it and there is also Big Cedar Lodge next door. Tons of stuff to do there like an Indian Artifacts Museum, trails to walk and golf cart tours through some caverns. There is a beautiful chapel with a glass wall in the back overlooking Tablerock Lake. They do destination weddings there. We decided that we needed to go back there for the whole weekend in order to see it all! Absolutely beautiful! I will try to post some pics in the Every Picture Tells a Story thread later, because words can't describe the beauty of it all!
Yesterday I took off work to babysit my grandson, 3 1/2, and we went to visit my Mom at the nursing home. She is doing so much better since we moved her there! She was amazed with his questions and he was amazed with her remote controlled bed!

Aww, that's sweet. My mom is in a care home too. It was a hard transition for her, but she's getting the medical care she needs as well as social interaction. She's the reigning Pokeno champ in her building. Her room is stocked with all the snacks and candy that she's won. :)

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Best wishes tlr and Brooke, glad to hear your mother is adjusting so well!
I had a pretty intense week last week. I had a seizure at work which caused a big fiasco on Wednesday, then we had a hurricane warning which shut down the school, then Friday through Monday I was in Atlanta going to to a book festival during the day and a sci fi convention at night!
I'm back home now - and exhausted!
-
Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
It sure is a change, tlr! Hope you're doing well!
I hope your mom is adjusting to her new home relatively easily, Brooke!
Soda, I'm sorry to hear about your recent health scare. Was it from stress or the school year starting, if you don't mind me asking? You sure did have a wild week with the weather and conventions too. I don't know exactly where you're located, and you don't have to say anything. But is Hurricane Irma going to affect where you live, like Harvey, I presume, did?

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Sorry to hear about that soda :(
I am loving College. My Epiphone headstock broke. So I decided to buy a brand new Guitar. It's a Gibson Les Paul 50s Tribute model. Satin Gold and made inthe USA

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
So sorry Soda and glad you're doing better now.
My class is going well for me and really glad we don't have that many students in it. I have to give a few presentations later and this will help me, as I don't usually do well with public speaking, and it feels a bit more comfortable for me and already like my teacher since I've had her before.

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Hope you're feeling better now Soda.
My summer has been very chaotic. It started out beautifully, weather was great, air was clear. Now all we have is horrible air quality due to all the fires in the state of MT. It's been this way since July!
Couple of bright spots. Our daughter got married on August 19th. And just for that day we had clear blue skies. It truly was a miracle, because a fire was burning across the lake from us, but the wind shifted in our favor. Beautiful day and fun was had by all.
Secondly, on August 2nd my son received a very needed jaw surgery to hopefully stop his migraines that he has suffered with all his life. He is recovering well and is back in College, his last semester. Unless of course he does a Masters program. The College has been having trouble getting much needed software because of the software Co.'s are based in Houston. It will all work out.
So, we have fires raging, Houston has water and now Florida is due to be hit by a hurricane. My brother lives in FL! Ugh, when will this horrid weather end? So on that note, I pray for all the folks and animals suffering through all these natural disasters. You know the saying; You Don't F--- With Mother Nature.
To All, Be Safe and have a lovely rest of your summer. Peace Out.:bye:

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Glad the school year seems to be going well for everyone!
DJ, hope it all calms down for you and the fires clear up - congrats to your daughter and best wishes for long-term success on your son's surgery.

Nah, I don't get triggered by stress like that, thank God, or I'd be in bad shape! However, if I get intensely upset - the kind where you're sobbing and gasping for breath and your temples are throbbing and you're red as a beat and all that - well, I should probably get myself a glass of water.
Harvey was indirectly responsible for my seizure, though! Because I used to live in Houston, my neurologist is located there. I needed her to OK a prescription renewal, but her office was closed for several days. I took meds from my "emergency stash" in the interim. The only problem was that the pills in my emergency stash hadn't been replenished in over a year. I found out the hard way that Lamictal that's over a year old doesn't work very well.
Irma is coming my way, but it's been downgraded. We don't expect anything too terrible by the time it gets where I am.

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Soda - So glad you are better and things have calmed down somewhat for you. Did you enjoy the book fest ? I have thought of going to one. I must be the only person who watches "Book TV" on CSpan.
DJ - I am so glad you were able to have a wonderful day for your daughters wedding. Those fires are scary.
TLR - Good luck at your new job. It's normal to be nervous.
Brooke & NMB - Happy to hear your Mom's are adjusting. My Mom was in a care home too. She always had a stash of goodies for my nieces and nephews when we took them to see grandma from her bingo winnings.
This weather has just been crazy and the hurricane season does not end until November 15th.

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Soda; Glad you are doing better now. Funny how some outdated medication gains strength and others lose it. My brother and family live in FL. They weren't affected to badly by Irma. A couple days with no power, which meant food loss, but they are native Montanan's so they knew how to prepare.

Sorry I haven't checked in in a while. Some of you may know my father died on Tuesday afternoon so it's been pretty intense.

Lisa - you & your family are in my thoughts & prayers during this sad, difficult time. As I said in my message to you, you have many friends around the world who are keeping you in their prayers. Let the wonderful memories of your dad comfort you.

GA, sad news. Look after yourself and it's ok to feel however you feel.

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Sorry about your dad, GA. :(
I don't think I've been on here since June, and alot has changed since then.
I finally got my driver's license in August, which means I was free to go to college on my terms since my grandmother has given me her car to use as I please (within reason). I said "was" because my mom moved in with her fiancee 3 weeks ago. I'm now living on my own amd learning how to juggle college and household chores, although I do spend alot of my time at my uncle's.
A few weeks ago, I had an appointment with an orthopedist. I was having ankle pain and trouble walking because of my cerebral palsy. My orthopedist told me that surgery is the only option because it's permanent. The only problem is the recovery period. I can't do college and recover, so I'll have to wait until Christmas break to have the surgery. Until then, I just have to hobble around and wear an ankle brace for support.
College is going great, although I do have a B in class that will probably stay a B because it's an online class, which I hate. I like the class, Sociology, but online learning just isn't for me. I've been elected president of three clubs, History, Political Guild, and Ally Outreach(LGBT). I'm going to four conferences this school year, Washington DC, and I may possibly briefly meet Pres. Jimmy Carter after one of his Sunday school classes.
My bond with four of my professors is growing stronger. It's very likely that my college will get a BA history/government program next fall, in which case, I'll enroll in it. Three of the four professors teach history or government. I have really bocome close to two of them, sort of like an adopted child.
I enjoy most of my classes, except for signing up for two literature classes in one semester. That huge amount of reading has lessened the joy I get of out of reading.

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
AG - Oh my gosh - that is a lot on your plate for one semester. I am so sorry to hear about the need for surgery.
I always loved my poli sci/ gov. classes - it was one of my majors. I could never have taken an on line class - if they had them then-lol. I always liked the class room experience interacting with the class and professor.
Good Luck this semester - it sounds like you have it under control.

I love my political science professor. He's a combination of intelligent, nutty, crazy, and loveable. He's one of the two that I have become the closest to, and he really helped me come out of my shell. I've taken the only 2 classes with him that I can, until the 4 year program is implemented. I should be doing a conference with him in November in Savannah, GA. I plan on minoring in political science.
-
Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Have a wonderful time in Savannah in November. I can't believe you can get the chance to meet Jimmy Carter ! So cool - not many people can say they met a former president. I have read he is very nice and approachable - if you can get past the S.S.
What will your major be ?

Thanks, I'm really looking forward to it. This will be first academic conference of any kind. I'm only a sophomore. Most students don't start doing this until their senior year or grad school, so it's an amazing privilege to be able to do this so young.
I live only a hour from Plains, GA. My history professor has done this before, and he wants me and a few others to do it before Pres. Carter is no longer able to.
My major is history, so it's a good combination since history and political science are so intertwined. I'll do a history conference in the spring in Tallahassee, Florida.

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
AG95, sorry about your ankle, but your life, otherwise, seems to be improving by leaps and bounds!! :yay: I couldn't be happier to hear it! We always knew you'd excel, given the opportunity. Much love and best wishes for your very bright future! :-D

Ga, I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad's passing. I haven't been around here for a bit. My thoughts and prayers for you and your family.
AG, good luck with your classes and your ankle.

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
I'm taking an econ midterm tomorrow and I'm scared a little bit but somehow a bit relaxed. Like, I should have been studying hard, but I go to office hours and seek tutoring a lot, and I think I've got the grasp of it. The definitions evade me though, but when in doubt, graph it out!
Lol, I just have a stats midterm on the 11th, and then I can't wait to see Lindsey Buckingham and Christine McVie on the 14th!
At this point, I really wished that I applied for Environmental Economics and Policy under the College of Natural Resources, so I wouldn't have to worry about GPA.
Heck, I'll be happy with a C on this exam tomorrow and then just do better on the next two tests. I know what I need to improve on for next time regarding study habits.

Yesterday afternoon ,my political science professor confirmed that I will be doing a paper on a undergraduate panel in Savannah, in a little over a month. My paper will focus on British public opinion of Brexit post-vote: if it's changed as a whole or within the 4 nations, ups and downs, events that may have changed public opinion etc. (I chose this topic because of my trip to Scotland.) As I said earlier, this will be my first academic conference, but it should be the first of many to come throughout my career.

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Congrats, AG95!! That's wonderful news! :-)
-
Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
Congratulations AG95!
BTW: In my opinion, Brexit is a complete farce and has exposed deep social problems in the UK including rampant xenophobia and the utter incompetence of our government. Looking at the demographics of the vote, it tends to be the elderly who voted most strongly for Brexit and the youth who voted against it. In doing so, again in my opinion, the more elderly have sabotaged the future of our youth.

Re: What's Happening In Your Life?
AG - Congrats ! What a wonderful experience for you. You have to let us know how things went when you get back and have the time to post here.

That’s great, AG95. Sounds like an interesting topic. Very timely too, with your recent trip to Scotland. Good luck!
