As a music critic, I know it's not cool to admit, but I like the Eagles — even their latest album, Long Road Out of Eden. Saturday's show didn't disappoint, but it wasn't quite as transcendental as I expected. (At least not the first set. I missed the second due to Journal deadlines.) They offered an awesome display of musicianship — they were as close to note-perfect as is possible in concert — but I think their quest for perfection tends to override their passion.
Here's a rundown of the first of their two sets:
    1. How Long — The first of four consecutive tunes from Long Road Out of Eden. Glenn Frey and Don Henley share lead vocals. Upbeat and warm, showcasing the foursome's warm harmonies and various assortment of acoustic and electric guitars.
    2. Busy Being Fabulous — A soft, summery tune with a carefree melody masking lyrics of loss. Lead vocals: Henley.
    3. I Don't Want To Hear Anymore — An R&B-flavoured number with organs and Henley on congas. Lead vocals: Bassist Timothy B. Schmit. I think he's the weakest link in the Eagles; his pinched pipes make him sound like a boy among men.
    4. Guilty of the Crime — A bluesy roadhouse tune. Lead vocals: Joe Walsh. He gets the loudest cheers. In my review, I said he's everyone's favourite Eagle — I think it's because he's the only one who is willing to eschew perfection.
    5. Hotel California — Starts off with a trumpet solo, played by a man in a cowboy hat, followed by Frey's jangling guitar. Henley sings and plays drums. Walsh and the band's tour guitarist, Steuart Smith, lay down gritty guitar lines. The trumpet player returns with a trio of saxophonists.
    6. Peaceful Easy Feeling — A tender country-rock number. Lead vocals: Frey. Drums: Henley.
    7. I Can't Tell You Why — Another one of Schmit's soulful R&B numbers. Better than I Don't Want To Hear Anymore, which I don't want to hear anymore. (Couldn't resist.) Keyboards: Frey.
    8. Witchy Woman — A dark number with First Nations undertones and a chorus of oohs. Lead vocals and drums: Henley.
    9. Lyin' Eyes — Another soft, summery tune masking lyrics of loss. Lead vocals: Frey. With violins and country-rock strums.
    10. Boys of Summer — Henley's 1984 smash. Twangy guitars. Atmsopheric synths. Goosebumps.
    11. In the City — A bluesy Walsh number with gospel oohs, saxophones, and Henley on congas. Standing ovation.
    12. The Long Run — The crowd stays on their feet and claps along with Henley as he sings the last tune in the first set.
He sings it high, he plays it low

Funny. I thought being a 'music critic' involved more than just writing 'Henley lead vocals and drums', etc.

Joe is not 'everyone's favourite Eagle'. He is reviewers' favourite Eagle because they seem to think he is easy to write about. This is dangerously close to cliche. The comments about Tim are unfair given the somewhat laconic nature of the rest of the review.

Doesn't the reviewer realize that Timothy's ability to sing high is part of the famous Eagles harmony?

That's exactly what I said earlier today, PM! Tim's high voice is not only an asset, it's a NECESSITY.

Wow - if this is the best review that this lady can come up with, she should consider going back to review school.
